"A stunning new suspense novel in William Kent Krueger's prize-winning Corcoran O'Connor series finds the charismatic detective steeped in his most dangerous case to date. Back on the beat as sheriff of Tamarack County, Cork O'Connor has already seen his beautiful Northwoods jurisdiction through an eventful summer. Now, as the chill of autumn sweeps through the countryside, he's about to face a season of murder, adultery, and deceit that will take him from seedy backwoods bars and humble reservation shanties to the highest and most corrupt echelons of Chicago society. Lured to the nearby Ojibwe reservation on what appears to be a routine domestic disturbance call, Cork finds himself the target of a sniper's deadly fire. He has little time to worry about his own precarious situation, however. Soon after the shooting, he's called to investigate a mutilated body found perched above the raging waters of Mercy Falls. The victim is Eddie Jacoby, a Chicago businessman involved in negotiating an unpopular contract between his management firm and the local Indian casino. Now Cork must deal with a high-profile murder contaminated with the blood of the rich and powerful. Sparks fly when the wealthy Jacoby family insists on hiring a beautiful private investigator named Dina Willner to consult on the case. But once Cork discovers an old and passionate tie between one of the Jacoby sons and his own wife, Jo, he begins to suspect that the events in Aurora have a darker, more personal motive than he could ever have imagined. With his life at stake and the safety of his family in question, Cork must squelch the growing suspicion that another man desperately wants his wife, and at the same time resist the passion heating up between himself and Dina. Murder, greed, sex, and jealousy all play a part in the maze of danger and intrigue Cork is caught in. But somewhere, hidden beneath the turbulent depths of Mercy Falls, lie the answers, and Cork is determined to find them. "

3 out of 5 stars Excellent, but no ending.......2007-09-08

I picked it up basically for the title because I thought a waterfall sounded cool. I would have given it 4 stars if only the ending was different. It was my first Krueger book and therefore also first of Corcoran O'Connor series. I liked the character development and relationships and the strong ties to a geographic region and culture. A little flirty at times, but never over the top.

5 out of 5 stars Mercy Falls (Cork O'Conner Mysteries by William Kent Krueger.......2007-06-26

I happen to pick up one of Mr. Krueger's books because it seemed like something that I would like to read.
Since then, I have read every book written by William Kent Krueger.

As every one of his books, "Mercy Falls" will captive you and you will not be able to put it down.
His writing makes you feel as if you're living within the story.

Believe me...when you're done, you'll be hunting for more William Kent Krueger's books!!!

1 out of 5 stars Mercy Falls.......2007-06-03

I have always greatly enjoyed Krueger's books, and have highly recommended him in the past. I enjoyed this book, until the ending. It was so disappointing that I have dropped my rating of Kruger to poor. I now find it embarrassing that I have recommended his so highly in the past. I will not buy his next book and recommend others avoid him. Cliff hangers are fine in weekly serials, and unexpected plot twists designed to draw one into the next book are fine, if well done. But to simply cut off a book in mid-chase is inexcusable. I do not know if the author simply got tired, did not know how to end the book or if the publisher decided that the book had to go to press immediately even without an ending. But I was most disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Complete book, incomplete ending.......2007-01-27

An incomplete ending does not a bad book make...it's just that most of us read mystery genre novels to provide a tidy little wrap-up to life's puzzles--a situation which, frustratingly, doesn't exist in our real lives. So, along comes William Krueger with Mercy Falls, and our expectations are denied. YOu can sense the frustration in some of these reviews--'how DARE he?', etc., etc. Interesting--because Krueger does solve the mystery, and answer the puzzling questions, just as our expectations demand. What he doesn't do is provide a 'happily ever after'. Instead, he leaves traumatized good people with a long period of recovery, a bad guy hellbent on revenge, and a hero in hiding. Of course that's a frustrating ending...but it's a real life, meaningful ending from an excellent writer of a very fine book.

5 out of 5 stars Mercy!.......2006-12-02

Mercy Falls, by William Kent Krueger - the 5th installment in Krueger's
very well-written Corcoran O'Connor series. I'm always a little sad
when I finish one of these books because that means I will have to wait awhile before I can visit again with Cork, his wife Jo, his pal Henry Meloux, and the whole crew at the Aurora, MN sheriff's department. In this outing, Cork and his partner Marcia Dross are summoned to a remote cabin where a distress call was placed. It turns out to be an ambush, and Marcia is critically wounded. The sniper isn't found, and Cork has to wonder who would want him dead and why. On the heels of this unsettling event, a wealthy and obnoxious land developer is found murdered at Mercy Falls, and the list of who would want Eddie Jacoby killed is long. The victim's half brother, Ben Jacoby, gets involved, throwing money around and hiring a private investigator to shadow Cork to make sure the investigation is handled properly. What Cork then learns is that Ben Jacoby and Cork's wife, Jo, had a torrid affair in law school, and that Ben isn't really over the affair despite 20 years having passed. When a bomb is found in Cork's car, he evacuates his family to Chicago, and goes it alone, trying to nail his stalker and the murderer of Eddie Jacoby as well. Another successful exercise in taut writing, with good character development and lovely, evocative writing on the beauty of Northern Minnesota and the Boundary Waters. Highly Recommended!

          Book Description

Seven marriageable daughters. . .And Lord Zachary Griffin is just the man to help them.

After all, what could be more tantalizing than teaching the beautiful Witfeld sisters all the special ways of driving a man into submission –– and marriage? And leading exquisite Caroline Witfeld, the most spirited and least frivolous sister, to temptation would be wildly delicious.

Zachary doesn't realize that Caroline's longing gazes have less to do with attraction and more to do with admission –– to a prestigious arts conservatory. If only she could set those high cheekbones, that aristocratic brow, and those powerful shoulders to canvas, her dreams would all come true. But Caroline is soon having dreams of a very different sort –– ones that involve the charming rogue and some improper behavior hardly befitting a lady dedicated to her art . . .unless she becomes dedicated to the art of love.

I love reading Suzanne Enoch, but this book was a slow start and stayed that way. I had to put it down it bored me to tears.

5 out of 5 stars Warm, Rich Characters.......2006-08-14

I loved this book. It truly swept me away. Wonderful characters, an interesting storyline and great writing. This is a book I intend to keep and read again.

2 out of 5 stars Boring, Boring, Boring.......2006-06-12

I usually like Enoch's novels. When I saw this one at the bookstore, I immediately snatched it up, and am now regretting not reading the reviews before I did. Lord Zachary is a boat without a rudder. Coming from a high ranking family, whose older brother is the Duke of Melbourne, Zachary is at a loss as to his purpose in life, so is constantly starting ventures and abandoning them when they lose his interest. Finally, he's hit upon what he wants, or thinks he wants to do, take up a military post and find glory in war. Unfortunately, the Duke knows his brother too well, and commands Zachary to accompany their aunt to Bath before making such a momentous life changing decision. Along the way, his aunt takes a side trip to visit her dear school friend - one who happens to have seven eligible, unmarried daughters. The oldest in this eccentric family, is Caroline Witfield, who does not want to be married - she dreams of becoming a painter.

This may seem to be the makings of a good story, but Enoch, unfortunately, does not deliver. The story falls flat because of the characters. Zachary is redeemable, but Caroline is just blah. She is an uninteresting character because of her single--mindedness and her unlikeability. Enoch attempts to set her apart from her sisters, portraying her sisters as flighty creatures with only one thing on their mind - to get married. The relationship between Caroline and her sisters leaves a bad taste in the reader's mouth - you get the feeling they don't like each other, and Caroline is the worst. Her only goal is her painting, she doesn't care what happens to her sister's or her parents. Very one-dimensional character.

The relationship between Zachary and Caroline is another blah. There is no chemistry, there are no sparks. If the two were shoved into a room full of combustible material, they would not have to worry of an explosion going off. I kept putting the book down, and in the end, had to force myself to finish it. It's a bad sign for me when it takes 3 weeks to finish a book, I didn't even care if Zachary and Caroline ended up together. I just wanted to finish the book so I could sell it back.

          5 out of 5 stars Delightful Seduction.......2006-04-04

With each book written Suzanne Enoch gets better and better. Everyone of her books is a delight to read. An Invitation to Sin is definitely one of her best. Never has seduction been written so masterfully, as each page is one to savor. The reader feels bereft when the book is over. Ah, but not for long, as this is a series and another will soon follow. Lord Zachary Griffin has got to be one of the sexiest men alive and Caroline Witfield is his perfect mate, a beautiful, but strong woman. No flighty characters here, other than the crazy relatives, which makes the lighter scenes so much fun. The combination of art and seduction is volcanic. I do not think I will ever look at paints again without thinking of that blazing love scene in Lord Griffin's parlor. A definite 9 out of 10 on the sensual scale. A definite keeper and one to read over and over again.

Victoria Fontaine's mischievous nature and brilliant, biting wit have scandalized the ton . . . and earned her the nickname "Vixen." But her reputation pales before the infamous Lord Althorpe's, known as "Lord Sin." The years Sinclair Grafton spent on the Continent have done nothing to quell the rumors about his past. And when the stunning Vixen and the handsome rogue find themselves momentarily alone at an elegant gala, their passion gets the best of them. Caught by Victoria's father in a shockingly sensual kiss, Sin and Vixen have no recourse except a wedding. At first the very liberal lady relishes the thought of an unfettered marriage to an indifferent, unrepentant scoundrel. But she suspects there is more to this enigmatic, remarkable man, that his rakish persona is merely a pose. And after one unforgettable night of ecstasy, Lady Vixen is determined to unmask the true Sin . . . to satisfy a passionate heart that craves far more than freedom.

                        Book Description

The Emerald Isle was brown and blasted. Only fables spoke of a green Ireland long ago. But young Flynn and Joanna treasured those tales of myth and magic, of bold kings and terrible giants, until Joanna's father betrothed her to an ignorant pig farmer, and she ran away. She fled to the Glowing Lands, certain that none would follow. But there the fabric of time itself was torn: Joanna plunged into the distant past--and into the lair of Cormac the Wolfking. Flynn dared to search for her, but the shifting curtain of time sent him to Tara, where a usurper ruled from Cormac's throne. And while Flynn was caught up in the struggle for the crown, Joanna fell under the Wolfking's enchantments....

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely riveting celtic fantasy........2006-12-18

One of the best Celtic fantasy novels I've ever read. Not easy to find now, but worth it if you do.

Premise: A nuclear war has occurred and the world has reverted to an almost medieval order, both socially and technologically. There are fields one is not allowed to enter, called "the glowing lands" because they glow with radiation at night. The heroine must hide there, and finds that the borders between present and ancient Ireland have thinned, and she finds herself in the age of mythology, where the Wolfking still rules and myths like the Erlking walk the lands. Riveting. Superb. Get this, you won't regret it.

                        5 out of 5 stars Wolfking.......2006-12-18

I have no idea how I came to own this book, but I was bored one day and was searching for something to read when I found it. I had passed over it several times because I thought that the plot would be rather dull--sort of Conan-esque. I read the back, then read it again. "Wait a minute," I thought. Did it really say it was post-Apocalyptic with time travel and a wolfman lover? I read the back again and I could not believe that I had missed this!

The premise turned out to be fascinating. I am interested in end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it books, as well as Celtic lore and mythical (and sometimes horrifying) beasts. Ms. Wood managed to combine these unlikely elements in a book that left me begging for more of her work. In the (not so far off future) of post-Apocalyptic Ireland, people have unfortunately returned to the days when men were superior and marriages were decided on by the parents. This didn't make the feminist in me too happy, but as it is entirely possible, given what I know about history and anthropology, I let it pass as being part of a different culture.

I forgot about my previous grumbles about the quirks of the society as I quickly became passionately invested in the characters. I alternated between shouting at them and cheering them on. All of the characters seemed fleshed out, with frailities and fears, but the reader is treated to a marvelous coming-of-age story as the young Joanna discovers strengths that she did not know she had.

The more I read, the more I NEEDED to know what would happen next. The plot twists had me re-reading a few times to be sure I grasped what had just happened, but I didn't mind reading fine prose again. The dialogue was snappy and believable, and while some parts of the book had a dark surrealistic theme, everything made sense within the context of ancient (to us) lore.

There are some heart-breaking scenes, as well as some grotesque and some erotic. The ending left me in tears, but I knew that in terms of literature, it had to happen like that.

I am telling you, neither the cover nor the back desciption can do justice to this work. My own paltry words can not express the greatness of this work. I began Wolfking with low expectations, but before I had read six pages, I was enthralled with this world.

This is an unusual book, in an unusual genre. If you are looking for something different, then I encourage you to find a copy of Wolfking at once.

5 out of 5 stars A trip to the Bronze Age of Ireland.......2002-12-06

The first time I ever read this book was about 10 years ago and I read it quite a few more times after that. I (stupidly) lent it out to everyone I knew & the last time I did, it never came back to me. It was a fantastic & erotic read that I don't recommend to children, but to anyone else who loves getting lost in a story.

                        5 out of 5 stars Wolfking.......2000-07-09

After the A pocalypse the Emerald Isle was brown and blasted. Humans lived in small groups. Lost was much of the old ways. Only fables spoke of a green Ireland-but young Flynn and Joanna treasured those tales of myth and magic, of bold kings and terrible giants. When Joanna is betrothed to an ignorant pig farmer, she fled into the Glowing Lands. But there the fabric of time itself was torn: Joanna pluged in to the distand past-and into the lair of Cormac the Wolking. Joanna falls under the Wolking's enchantments....and joins a war to free and crown the Wolking. Flynn dared the Glowing Lands in search of his love Joanna. The Irish folk lore is great. The story holds you. All the charaters are will thought out, and intresting. I enjoyed this book. If you like werewolfs, giants and magic, you will like this story.

For most writers, the greatest challenge of spiritual writing is to keep it grounded in concrete language. The temptation is to wander off into the clouds of ethereal epiphanies, only to lose readers with woo-woo thinking and sacred-laced clichés. Thankfully, Anne Lamott (Operating Instructions, Crooked Little Heart) knows better. In this collection of essays, Lamott offers her trademark wit and irreverence in describing her reluctant journey into faith. Every epiphany is framed in plainspoken (and, yes, occasionally crassly spoken) real-life, honest-to-God experiences. For example, after having an abortion, Lamott felt the presence of Christ sitting in her bedroom:
This experience spooked me badly, but I thought it was just an apparition born of fear and self-loathing and booze and loss of blood. But then everywhere I went I had the feeling that a little cat was following me, wanting me to reach down and pick it up, wanting me to open the door and let it in. But I knew what would happen: you let a cat in one time, give it a little milk and then it stays forever.
Whether she's writing about airplane turbulence, bulimia, her "feta cheese thighs," or consulting God over how to parent her son, Lamott keeps her spirituality firmly planted in solid scenes and believable metaphors. As a result, this is a richly satisfying armchair-travel experience, highlighting the tender mercies of Lamott's life that nudged her into Christian faith. --Gail Hudson

                                Amazon.com Audiobook Review

Anne Lamott admits that she's "ever so slightly more anxious than the average hypochondriac." When faced with a small, irregular mole and a family history of skin cancer, however, she remembers her faith in God and enjoys some peace--despite behaving "a little more like Nathan Lane in The Birdcage than I would have hoped." Author Lamott reads these wonderfully detailed postcards from her meandering journey to faith. With sharp and bittersweet humor, she recounts a past full of bad relationships with men, with food, with drugs, with alcohol, and worst of all, with herself. She battles her demons thanks to the love of her friends and family and her "lurch of faith" to embrace religion, that "puzzling thing inside me that had begun to tug on my sleeve from time to time, trying to get my attention." Inspiring but not dogmatic, Traveling Mercies is a treasure. (Running time: 4 hours, 3 cassettes) --C.B. Delaney

                                Book Description

Anne Lamott claims the two best prayers she knows are: "Help me, help me, help me" and "Thank you, thank you, thank you." She has a friend whose morning prayer each day is "Whatever," and whose evening prayer is "Oh, well." Anne thinks of Jesus as "Casper the friendly savior" and describes God as "one crafty mother."

Despite--or because of--her irreverence, faith is a natural subject for Anne Lamott. Since Operating Instructions and Bird by Bird, her fans have been waiting for her to write the book that explained how she came to the big-hearted, grateful, generous faith that she so often alluded to in her two earlier nonfiction books. The people in Anne Lamott's real life are like beloved characters in a favorite series for her readers--her friend Pammy, her son, Sam, and the many funny and wise folks who attend her church are all familiar. And Traveling Mercies is a welcome return to those lives, as well as an introduction to new companions Lamott treats with the same candor, insight, and tenderness.

Lamott's faith isn't about easy answers, which is part of what endears her to believers as well as nonbelievers. Against all odds, she came to believe in God and then, even more miraculously, in herself. As she puts it, "My coming to faith did not start with a leap but rather a series of staggers." At once tough, personal, affectionate, wise, and very funny, Traveling Mercies tells in exuberant detail how Anne Lamott learned to shine the light of faith on the darkest part of ordinary life, exposing surprising pockets of meaning and hope.

                                Download Description

Traveling Mercies takes us on a journey through Anne Lamott's troubled past to illuminate her devout but quirky walk of faith: how, against all odds, she came to believe in God, and the myriad ways in which that faith sustains and guides her in everyday life. With an exuberant mix of passion and self-deprecating humor, Lamott explores whether certain behaviors will get her "a better seat in heaven, " perhaps "near the dessert table, " or whether her mistakes "make Jesus want to drink gin straight out of the cat disk" She writes about her family, about helping a friend through the devastating illness of her baby, about wanting but not having all the answers for her eight-year-old son.

Through the hard-won wisdom that forms the core of her beliefs, and with wit, insight, and lots of heart, she shows us how she creates a life balance of connectedness and liberation.

This is one of my favorite books, and I've read it many times. The essay on Forgiveness is a classic. I'm not sure how Annie Lamott makes fundamentalist Christianity palatable, but she manages to convey a deep sense of faith and gratitude along with a quirky charming wit about it all -- especially about herself.

I pretty much love any essay Anne Lamott writes, and I appreciate her foray into the spiritual side of life. She makes faith very real and very every day/accesible ... something we all need. Her humor and witty prose make the reading enjoyable as well.

4 out of 5 stars A Great and Pleasant Read.......2007-08-09

From the start to the end, Anne Lamott's writing is greatly captivating and keeps her readers guessing as to what she's getting at, then leaves us with great philosophical insight, all the while keeping her humorous input she's so famous for.
Although she writes with freedom and confidence, some of her ideas about "faith" may not be what most people expect, but then again, these are her own thoughts about faith, what she's gone through and how she has come to be the person she is today.
She carries along a great novel, somewhat of an autobiography with her son Sam, and warmly welcomes any readers willing to read to the very end. Lots of great quotations to write down; a definite read for anyone.

1 out of 5 stars Put me out of my misery.......2007-08-07

Having read previously published books by Anne LaMott, I admit I was unenthusiastic about reading this book group selection. Much of the material is rehashed from previous works but now autobiographically instead of as "fiction."

I found her self-depricating tone to be disingenuous and much of her self pity to stem from personal problems that were self-inflicted. (Did that last sentence mention "self?") The book is centered on her self involvement which often attempts to depict herself as being gritty, worldly, and street-experienced.

While she has had experience as an alcoholic and sex addict, she never seems to rise above it in any inspirational way. Authors such as Frank McCort of Angela's Ashes and Jeannette Walls of the Glass Castle were confronted with horrible childhoods but managed to survive with a spunk and spirit I admired. I couldn't figure out what was so bad in Anne LaMott's life that she had to complain about and/or turn to self abuse to cope. I grew up with my own share of dysfunction but chose to take a more optimistic outlook on life.

Although I agree with many of her political points of view, it did not sit well with me how she launched personal attacks on those who held opposing views. "The New Adventures of Old Christine" is able to satirize those annoying holier-than-thou mothers at the PTO in a much more humorous way and that's saying a lot for a TV situation comedy compared to this literary selection.

I forced myself to finish the last third of the book after our book group discussion because those chapters seemed to be the most poignant. Yes, that was the best part of the book. The chapters about being kind to her aging body and dealing with aging parents were the most honest and touching sections.

Even so, this is not a book I would recommend to someone looking for emotional uplift or spiritual insight.

5 out of 5 stars TOP FIVE ON MY "BEST-LOVED BOOKS" LIST.......2007-07-03

I keep a list of best-loved books, which is coming in handy lately as I hit my forties and tend to rebuy books I've already read (sometimes getting through several chapters before I figure this out). If I put the list in order, Traveling Mercies would immediately make my top five. Lamott's autobiographical essays are hilarious and heartbreaking and wonderful, and make me wish she lived next door. I've read Traveling Mercies all the way through at least six times, and picked it up countless other times to enjoy one of the stand-alone chapters. I love the poetic compassion of some of the passages so much that I read them outloud. If you're a mom, you've got to read the chapter on forgiveness - Lamott's attempt to deal with her resentment of a perfect, day-planner writing, cupcake baking, field trip-chaperoning mom. We've all been there on some level. I keep going back to this book when I need to teach adult Sunday school, because it's such a beautiful exploration of Christian faith in a life that's messy and funny and difficult and real.
