"Epic, ambitious, heartbreaking, and wholly original, T Cooper's Lipshitz Six, or Two Angry Blondes is a literary tour de force that spans the twentieth century with one family's search for a lost son. In Lipshitz Six, or Two Angry Blondes, author T Cooper chronicles the unusual history of the Lipshitz family, Jewish refugees who narrowly escape the bloody Russian pogroms of 1903. Upon landing at Ellis Island, Esther and Hersh Lipshitz lose their uncharacteristically blond-haired, blue-eyed son Reuven. Circumstances eventually force them to give up their fruitless search for Reuven and to join a relative living in the Texas panhandle. However, Esther never stops pondering the fate of her lost son, and when she sees a picture of the blond, blue-eyed Charles Lindbergh after his 1927 transatlantic flight, she becomes convinced that the aviator is her grown son Reuven. Esther's obsession with Lindbergh (Reuven) slowly destroys those around her and will leave far-reaching effects on the entire Lipshitz family. In 2002 in New York City, we encounter the character T Cooper, the last living Lipshitz, who has received an unsolicited box from his estranged mother. In it, he finds clippings and letters to Charles Lindbergh and his family, all once carefully preserved by his great-grandmother Esther. When he is forced back to Texas to bury his suddenly and tragically deceased parents, T finds himself the inheritor of a family history filled with loose ends, factual errors, and maniacal behavior. An ex-literary golden boy who has quit writing to pursue a career as a bar mitzvah entertainer who impersonates the rapper Eminem, T struggles to make sense of all that came before him and-in light of his wife's desire to have a baby-what legacy he might leave behind as well."

a mess of a novel.......2007-03-30
i really wanted to like this book, especially after reading the glowing blurbs all over it and having it recommended to me by my favorite bookstore, but i found it to be a massive mess of a novel. it is basically two short stories and one novella posing as a unified work, and it does not flow well at all. the first 100 pages (one of the short stories) are brutal, and somewhat unnecessary. it would have worked better as a stand-alone work with more development and less violence. if you are a sensitive reader and you want to read this book, you truly can skip the first 100 pages and still get the gist of the next part (the novella). the details of a russian pogrom are not ones that you will easily forget.
i would have enjoyed the second section of the book--in fact if it had enormous potential to be developed by itself into a mature work had the author drawn out more of the other characters. i enjoyed this part of the work and would have like to have learned more about the characters from this period of esther's life. this part needed development.
the third part is a complete waste and absolutely destroys the flow of the book. there is so little connection to the previous 315 pages (aside from biology) that it disrupts any connection one may have felt previously. it definitely should have been a stand-alone work and would have been interesting as a short story, but instead it just sticks out like an indulgent literary exercise. and a badly written one at that.
overall this work reads like the author had three ideas for a work and couldn't decide which direction to go it, so all of them were used when two of them should have been discarded. do not waste your money on this.
enough horrors, already........2006-10-22
The writing's all right, for the first hundred pages or so, but the content was unrelentingly dismal so I left off. I don't really need to be shown in vivid detail what Russian bigots did to some poor Jewish girl, what a skull fracture looks & smells like, or what heartbroken women do to themselves with razors, or children, desperate to be liked, with whatever they can find. After a while I told myself, "If this character does X, I'm putting the book down," X being an obvious and ill-chosen action; he did, and I did.
A Worthy Read.......2006-07-04
This book should be read simply because Cooper knows how to tell a compelling story. Half way through, I found myself unable to put it down. The transition from third person historical narrative to first person, while abrupt, was pulled off deftly, and the latter part of the book was utterly convincing for me. Throw in moments of laugh-out-loud hilarity and authentic, moving scenes, and you have a richly entertaining tale. Highly recommended.
SOMEWHAT QUIRKY NONETHELESS INTRIGUING.......2006-06-14
This author's first book, Some of the Parts, established her as one who created strong voiced characters , and wove somewhat quirky nonetheless intriguing plots. She follows this pattern with her second novel - there's little self-effacing about Esther or T. Cooper.
Our story of the Lipshitz family begins with their escape from 1903 Russia and the cruel pogroms. Esther, Hersh and their four children gratefully arrive at Ellis Island only to discover that their son, Reuven, is nowhere to be found. They search all over New York City for their blond, blue-eyed son but are stymied at every turn. Finally, the family join a relative in Texas and establish a home in a place the most unlike Russia they've seen - the dusty panhandle of the
Lone Star State.
Esther continues to mourn the loss of her son, and when she sees a newspaper photo of Charles Lindbergh announcing his 1927 transatlantic flight she becomes convinced that he is her long lost son now grown and famous. She is so obsessed by this notion that she corresponds with the Lindbergh family and saves every scrap of news about the aviator.
Now, segue to New York City a half a century later and Esther's great-grandson, T. Cooper, a writer who is not doing much writing but earns his bread and butter by imitating Eminem at bar mitzvahs.
When Cooper's parents are killed in an auto accident he returns to Texas to make final arrangements, and it is there that he faces his strange family history.
Actor/musician Kirby Heyborne gives a notable reading to the Lipshitz saga, by turns imbuing it with dogged determination, consternation, and humor.

Great read!.......2006-04-22
T Cooper manages to combine two very different (yet also quite
similar) stories with two very different voices into
one page-turning novel. Unique characters, combined
with a unique writing style make for a very
interesting, witty, and enjoyable read.

A fun book to read!.......2007-04-29
As a hockey fan, I appreciated the setting of this book. I like the way Deidre Martin writes: snappy, sexy, fast-paced, action-packed yet tender too. The sexual tension and banter was well written and witty, without coming across as hostile and abrasive. The characters were well-drawn, likable despite their flaws. I especially appreciated the subplot of caring for and mentoring Tuck. Both protagonists make a huge difference in his young life, each in their own special way. Kudos to the author for a wonderful story, and I can't wait to read the others in the series.
No Penalty for Reading.......2006-10-07
I kept putting off reading Dierdre Martin...see I read a bunch of other authors, so I didn't want to add to my list...WHAT A MISTAKE! She is a fabulous writer. I was caught from the 1st sentence. You really get to know these characters...so much that you cry when they cry and you laugh (sometimes outloud) when they laugh. Dierdre is such a talented writer. I am waiting (not very patiently) for her next book, Chasing Stanley. Please don't make the same mistake I made...don't wait to read these books, GET THEM NOW, and enjoy them as much as I did!
If only all reunions could include romance!.......2006-07-24
Former heavyweight Katie reluctantly attends her high school reunion. Treated like a leper by the more popular students, she has lost a lot of weight, gone to college, and is now at home helping her mom take care of her nephew and on a sabbatical writing a book about the sociology of sports. Most of the people she meets at the reunion are apologetic about the way they treated her until nemesis Liz Flaherty makes an appearance and is still as snotty and childish as ever. As Katie leaves the party, she manages to capture the attention of fellow former student Paul Van Dorn, who has returned home after a career-ending head injury cut his NHL career short. Paul is still having difficulty coming to terms with his present as a bar owner and moving on from his past glory days.
Paul is flattered when he is asked to coach a local hockey team, until he finds out that it is the juniors - 9 to 10 year olds who know little about the sport but love to skate. But in Katie's nephew Tuck, he finds raw talent. When Katie finally succumbs to Paul's charms (after a very horrific but funny first date), she fears that people will assume Tuck has gotten ice time because of her. Tuck is currently motherless as his mom is in a detox center. When she gets out, he wants to stay with Katie but mom Mina has other thoughts, and often Tuck is not a priority in her misguided life. Katie would love nothing more than to be a bigger part of Tuck's life.
The biggest obstacle in the relationship is the fact that Paul is so committed to his past, while Katie would rather never think about the worst period of her life. And of course Liz is waiting in the wings to wreak additional havoc on Katie's life. Will these two ever be able to find some middle ground?
Martin redeems herself after last year's abysmal "Total Rush" with a compelling and romantic story about second chances both in life and love. The result is a tempting tale!
Refreshingly Light.......2006-07-17
This book was a refreshing break from some of the really heavy paranormal or historical romances I've read lately. Yeah, it's a bit superficial and light, but it was written well, and kept my interest. I finished the entire book in a day, whereas sometimes I can take days to slog through a book. The author has a good style and is very witty, at times this book made me smile or even laugh out loud, and that's just the thing for a good summer romance book.
A cute story, but not a meaty one.......2006-07-05
Like the other books of Martin's I've read, this one makes good light reading. The book is amusing and cute, but lacking in the depth that would make it a truly good book. It's all just very superficial. She skimps past the real issues, never digging down to the true emotions and problems. Martin doesn't do justice to the characters, their pasts, and their situations.
Paul was introduced in at least one of her other books that I've read. In that book, he was a total prick until near the end. This was addressed with about two sentences in the current book. It should have been talked about and dissected a bit. Because she didn't, there was a lack of realism with Paul's character. As for Katie...she pissed me off a lot. She was very self-focused to the point that it was annoying. And there was the whole issue with her weight that is mentioned a lot, but never really dealt with.
Overall, like I said, it's a cute story and good if you want some light reading, but if you want something deeper, I wouldn't recommend Martin's books. I tend to read them only because they involve hockey players.

Inside hockey.......2007-02-02
Inside Hockey by Gary Miles is 155 pages long and was published by Metro Books in 1998. This a non-fiction book about the history of the game of hockey. Inside Hockey tells about the game, its players, rules, and coaches.
It tells great Stanley Cup stories such as the Penguins back to back wins in 91' and 92' and the great players that have played the game. Guys like Wayne Gretzky, Jarri Kurri, Sergei Federov, Terry Sawchuk, and Eric Lindros re just a few that talked about they're playing careers. Many other unheard stories re told by players and coaches.
The nice thing about this book is it is very easy two read and very informative. If you have a strong passion for hockey you wont be able to put this book down for a second. Inside Hockey was a great book by Gary Miles. I haven't read a better book about hockey facts in my life and if you want to learn more about hockey and its history you should check out this book.
Inside Hockey: Players, Pucks, and Penalty Boxes by Gary Mi.......2005-03-22
I am a huge and avid fan of this sport and received from my sister in law and my brother christmas 2004. Even though it is quite old and most players play for other teams now, the book is filled with cool anectdotes, tidbits and such. The photos are top of the line sports photography and stories. I love it and so will all hockey fans....
An excellent book for avid hockey fans.......1999-02-07
An excellent overview of the history and rules of the game of hockey. This walks through the creation of the game as well as biographies of the greatest players of all time. Even though the target of this book may be for the true fan, those who are merely interested in the game will find enjoyment as well.

Into My Garbage Bin.......2003-02-24
As a recreational hockey player and avid hockey fan by night and publications editor by day, I found this book to be boring and over the top. His anecdotes about NHL enforcers are sanitized to a "Family Channel"- level style of writing, about as pointless and meaningless as an Eminem CD edited for Christian radio stations. In keeping with the Mighty Ducks/Disney/Mickey Mouse squeaky-clean environment he works in, his words, even his direct quotes, are cleansed, leaving only adjectives along the lines of "making comments about my ancestors" as a euphemism for swearing, a phrase only my own ancestors used. If you can't talk the talk, Lloyd, then write the scripts for the MVP sequels.
Readers, buy the book "Goon" instead for real-life hockey experiences told as they happenend - blood, guts, and all.
5(Stars) for Fighting.......2002-11-05
What can I say about this book. At first, I thought it was a good book. As I read on, I began to accept the fact that it was a very good book. By the time I finished, I had come to the conclusion that In the Bin is one of the greatest books to cover any sport, not just hockey. Just a truly amazing look at a few different angles of the game that we don't get to see very often.
Lloyd Freeberg's writing style has more moves than a Mario Lemieux breakaway. I was constantly being amuzed at the different stories he told, he has a great sence of humor and timing. Though the accompaning pictures are in black & white, they are superb. The variety of things Freeberg writes about caught me off gaurd. I thought that the book would focus only on penalty box incidents dealing primarily with goons from around the league. I was pleasantly suprised when I began reading about mascots, superstars, zambonis, goal judges, fans, referees and even arenas. The diversity was not only entertaining, but enlightening as well.
With stories of all types constructed with skill similar to that of Paul Kariya's stick handling, In the Bin delivers as much excitement as an overtime playoff goal. I loved every word of this book and I wouldn't hesitate to read another book by Freeberg, nor will I hesitate to suggest this book to anyone.
Great book!!!.......2001-12-28
Have you ever wondered what it's like to sit in the "sin bin" with the players?? Have you ever wondered what they say to each other and to the officials?? This book gets you into the sin bin without threatening your life. Lloyd Freeberg is an off-ice official. He has spent time in the penalty box with the likes of Bob Probert, Kris Draper and even Wayne Gretzky. There is even a chapter on some weird superstitions of hockey players. Read about his most embarrassing moment as an official, and his most dangerous times in the penalty box. For Red Wing fans- there's a chapter on Kris Draper and one on Bob Probert (former Wing). Everything from smuggling pucks to kicking the bucket where the pucks are kept to throwing chairs to insults is in this book--from first hand experience. I kept wanting to share everything I read with my family, and the book kept me laughing and wanting more. If your one of those fans who loves the fights and/or wonders what is said in the penalty boxes, this book is for you.
bought it as a gift.......2001-11-04
I bought this as a gift for a friend. He loves it, often quoting some of the stories in it. Great for hockey lovers!
I wasn't even a hockey fan but...........2000-09-09
My boyfriend bought this book for himself and after hearing him laugh to the point of tears every time he opened it up, I decided to have a look. Freeberg painted a picture of hockey I had never really thought existed: a picture of real people and their lives and antics and mess ups and fall downs.... I am really glad I picked it up, I kinda have a different view of the game and it's participants now. Highly reccomended!

Product Description
From Publishers WeeklyIn this fun, fast rinkside contemporary romance from Martin (Total Rush), down-on-his-luck hockey jock Paul van Dorn and formerly overweight overachiever Katie Fisher answer the age-old question: can you ever live down high school? Reintroduced at their 10-year reunion, Paul is stunned to find the girl he dubbed "Bubble Butt" grown into a sexy sociology professor. Recently forced to retire from the NHL, Paul has returned to their hometown, tiny Didsbury, Conn., where he stews in post-pro blues at his bar, the Penalty Box. Katie, on a yearlong book sabbatical, has moved home with her mother and nephew Tuck, whose own mom is stuck in rehab. Despite Paul's past cruelty, Katie falls for him after he gives a revealing interview for her project on sports and male identity. What begins as an undercover affair blossoms into a life-changing relationship as the pair discover that living in the present beats living in the past. Martin scores with this witty blend of romance and family dynamics. (Mar.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Chinese Cinderella is the perfect title for Adeline Yen Mah's compelling autobiography in which, like the fairy-tale maiden, her childhood was ruled by a cruel stepmother. "Fifth Younger Sister" or "Wu Mei," as Yen Mah was called, is only an infant when her father remarries after her mother's death. As the youngest of her five siblings, Wu Mei suffers the worst at the hands of her stepmother Niang. She is denied carfare, frequently forgotten at school at the end of the day, and whipped for daring to attend a classmate's birthday party against Niang's wishes. Her father even forgets the spelling of her name when filling out her school enrollment record. In her loneliness, Wu Mei turns to books for company: "I was alone with my beloved books. What bliss! To be left in peace with Cordelia, Regan, Gonoril, and Lear himself--characters more real than my family... What happiness! What comfort!" Even though Wu Mei is repeatedly moved up to grades above those of her peers, it is only when she wins an international play-writing contest in high school that her father finally takes notice and grants her wish to attend college in England. Despite her parent's heartbreaking neglect, she eventually becomes a doctor and realizes her dream of being a writer.
Teens, with their passionate convictions and strong sense of fair play, will be immediately enveloped in the gross injustice of Adeline Yen Mah's story. A complete glossary, historical notes on the state of Chinese society and politics during Yen Mah's childhood, and the legend of the original Chinese Cinderella round out this stirring testimony to the strength of human character and the power of education. (Ages 10 to 15) --Jennifer Hubert
Book Description
A riveting memoir of a girl's painful coming-of-age in a wealthy Chinese family during the 1940s.
A Chinese proverb says, "Falling leaves return to their roots." In Chinese Cinderella, Adeline Yen Mah returns to her roots to tell the story of her painful childhood and her ultimate triumph and courage in the face of despair. Adeline's affluent, powerful family considers her bad luck after her mother dies giving birth to her. Life does not get any easier when her father remarries. She and her siblings are subjected to the disdain of her stepmother, while her stepbrother and stepsister are spoiled. Although Adeline wins prizes at school, they are not enough to compensate for what she really yearns for -- the love and understanding of her family.
Following the success of the critically acclaimed adult bestseller Falling Leaves, this memoir is a moving telling of the classic Cinderella story, with Adeline Yen Mah providing her own courageous voice.
Customer Reviews:
Was it that bad?.......2007-07-24
This is a better written book than Falling Leaves, the author's first book. It detailed the childhood of the unwanted daughter with better mix of "good and bad" and less bitterness came through the book.
While I shared the pain of being rejected and unaccepted by her parents, the author should appreciate and be thankful of what she had....loving Grandparents, Aunt Baba and good education which was the foundation of her success.
Think about tens and thousands of unwanted daughters in China who are abandoned by their parents daily.....they don't know who their parents are and have no sightline of their basic needs. The chance of being sent to prestige schools and study oversea is nil...I bet those unwanted daughters will trade the author's place at a heartbeat.
I could not put it down.......2007-07-02
I simply could not put this book down. I was absorbed the entire time. A story of miraculous courage and triumph, it reminds its readers that the love of human relationships is essential in this life, for without it one does not have much. I am excited to order it as a classroom novel for my 7th grade reading class!!! It is truly worth one's time.
Chinese Cinderella.......2007-05-19
Have you ever felt like you were unwanted? Have you have felt hated like nobody likes or wants you? Well if you know this felling you would have close ties to this book. Also for the record Adeline Yen Mah has felt like that since she was born. So I haven't thought that it couldn't get worse because it really can get worse.
The book is a biography of her life while she was in China. The book covers most of her life but it is more of her childhood not her most recent life. It describes the sadness that Adeline has been through. It in the first chapter It says everyone hated her because three days after she was born her mother came down with a high fever and died two weeks after she was born. So she never got to now her real mother. Her father remarries and all his children didn't like her but they were forced to call her niang (which in Chinese means mother) which none of them think of her as their real mother they all didn't like her. Her stepmother always abused her and never liked her she only liked the kids that she had gave life to. So she always abused her younger and older siblings.
I actually could compare this book a little to my own life. I haven't felt as unwanted or as hated as she has. I also haven't been abused like she has. I haven't actually really been abused all that much. But I have felt unwanted before. I haven't been abused like had been I haven't ever been abused that much.
Over all I would give this book a 10 out of 10. It only has 200 pages altogether so it won't take you a very long time. It is a very good read. It would take you maybe a weekend or two to read it. That is why I gave it a 10 out of 10.
I would recommend this book to anyone but it would be more of an adult book. It has way too much sadness for a young child. Also if it for an adult one of them people that are always happy and peppy and think that nothing can ever happen too them. It will be a real eye opener because they will realize it could really happen to them. So then they won't be going around saying "my life can't get any worse".
Great book for a pre-teen.......2007-04-24
I picked up this book the other week for my 12-year-old daughter after browsing thru the bookstores for something outta the norm for her. I bought it solely on the back-cover synopsis -- mine being an only child and doted on for the most part. I kind of expected her to glance at the cover and half-heartedly browse thru it. I was so wrong! She read it in a few days! She's always been into books -- but of her own choosing: Harry Potter and/or Lemony Snickett, fantasies and the like. After she put it down each night, she would tell me a bit about what she just read. Believe me, she's NEVER done that before. She said it truly was a cinderella story, and wondered why no one would help the little girl more. She showed alot of empathy for Adeline as a child. What I think I'm trying to convey is that it is a book written to touch the soul of the young reader -- something the author succeeded so well at.
Amazing Efforts.......2007-03-29
I strongly recommend the book Chinese Cinderella to people who do not mind a book that might make them cry. This book was a page-turner because while reading it, you just have to find out what happens next. Anyone with a strong heart will enjoy this book because it is so amazing what this little girl went through. While reading this book, there were some parts I felt like I was about to break down and cry, but there were others where I wanted to meet Adeline Yen Mah and congratulate her for her amazing efforts.

Book Description
Cinderella and the Prince have a baby named Belinda. She becomes unbearably selfish and rude, much like Cinderella's stepsisters. The brokenhearted Prince and Cinderella admit they have unwittingly pampered their little princess. After trying to remedy their parenting errors without success, they turn to Cinderella's fairy godmother. Once Belinda agrees to visit Fairy Godmother she finds herself on her own without servants or luxuries. Godmother's magical cottage becomes animated to help Belinda learn royal manners and unselfish behavior more befitting one who will become a ruler.
Customer Reviews:
Very Cute!.......2004-10-09
When Cinderella and the Prince unintentionally spoil their daughter it's Fairy Godmother to the rescue! It's great how this book gives a fun little story and yet the whole while is teaching the importance of having good manners and thinking of others. I highly recommend it for children and grown-ups.
A must for both children and parents!.......2004-08-04
Cinderella's Daughter is a fun, beguiling children's story on its own, but it also serves as a gentle, though direct, teacher of positive - and essential - traits of character: kindness, thoughtfulness, responsibility for one's own actions, along with common sense good manners. On a deeper level, it makes reference to the materialistic mindset so dominant in America these days and guides parents struggling with the fallout of our own good fortune: what to do when we realize that this is a country populated by a great many spoiled little (and not so little) princes and princesses -- and that our own children have grown up spoiled, thoughtless, superficial and value-less because we have been able to give them all the things that we or our parents lacked when growing up! Highly recommended!

Customer Reviews:
Waste of money.......2007-08-01
My father tried Poly-MVA for his prostate cancer for 6 months and showed absolutely NO improvement and actually got worse and wasted valuable time that could have been spent trying proven treatments. The "doctor" that developed poly MVA is a DENTIST and there is absolutely NO SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE that this treatment does anything to help cancer. Read their website and all their "evidence" and you will find many disclaimers that their product is not meant to diagnose, cure or treat any illness because they have not done any research to prove anything and so cannot legally claim any benefits (yet they still try). Dr. Andrew Weil, the ultimate proponent of alternative medicine states Poly MVA has shown no benfits in cancer treatment. Don't waste your money or your time.
