5 out of 5 stars Ms. Ray does it again!.......2007-03-21

Francis Ray is one of my favorite authors. Great stories, and great characters. I love to curl up with a glass wine and enjoy a great evening with Francis Ray's characters. A must buy!

5 out of 5 stars Francis Ray Rules.......2007-03-20

Francis Ray always captures me with her writing. Sometimes I find it may start a little slow, but once she gets rolling the story always flows. And these three stories were full of romance and steamy intimacy. All I can say is thank God I'm not single or I'd be lookin' for a man after each one of her novels. Keep 'em coming Francis!

4 out of 5 stars First story - ok the rest good.......2006-11-08

Only hers - 3 stars; ok Shannon was a weeping willow wimp, Matt a brooding idiot. The best characters were Daniel Falcon and the ranch staff.
The Heart of the Falcon- 3.5 stars- Daniel supposedly a man of integrity behaved abominably at first but I suppose he came good in the end. Madelyn well I suppose she loved him,if it was me from the time he denied the baby he wouldn't see me for dust. Best characters- John Henry Falcon and Felician Falcon. Kane and Matthew acted like hypocrites and as if their sister was a small child not a 24 year old woman.
Break every rule - best story 5 stars! Love story handled well, with good emphasis on characterisation rather then the physical sex which is different but nice.

4 out of 5 stars "Whatta Novel".......2006-07-06

Here's my review: "Only Hers" (3 stars), this book was o.k. Octavia was my favorite character because she was so down to earth, Cleve made you just want to hug him. The main characters, Shannon and Matt really got on my nerves, with Matt's bullying, and Shannon crying every other paragraph. "Heart Of The Falcon" (3 stars), this book was so funny to me. Daniel was hilarious...and I don't mean this in a good way. Mr. Big-time Businessman strutting around Texas, people fearing him saying..."You don't want to cross Daniel Falcon", but at the same time singing his praises like he's a god or something. The way Ms. Ray describes how Daniel dresses, with his Stetson hat, tight pants, and cowboy boots and his hair in a ponytail....I bet he looked like I don't know what. Madelyn's pregnant at the drop of a hat, hoping and praying that Daniel will love her. Ms. Ray what are you doing to the women in these stories. Give the ladies backbones PLEASE!!!! The only interesting characters in this novel were Daniel's parents John Henry and Felicia, Higgins(Felicia's driver), and Madelyn's parents Bill and Grace. I liked how Kane and Matt took Daniel off to the side for a "talk". The ending pissed me off because all Daniel had to do was get mushy, tell Madelyn all the things she wanted to hear, she cries, excepts his ring and BOOM! they get married, after everything he's said and done to her, especially denying that he was the father of their baby. "Break Every Rule" (5 stars), this book I really liked. Trent and Dominique were nothing like Shannon and Matt, and Daniel and Madelyn. Trent was all that without being a bully, Dominique had a "BACKBONE", and the storyline got right to the point without being boring. I liked how Trent was nice and respectful and looked out for Janice. Trent's background should have been dealt with more. All the characters were a joy to read, from Trent all the way down to Isaac. To me all 569 pages of this book should have been "Break Every Rule".

5 out of 5 stars I can't wait to read more.......2005-09-28

I had heard alot about the "Falcon" series and how good it was so when I cam across the opportunity to buy 3 at once I jumped at the chance. Needless to say I am just as hooked just like a fish to a hook on this family tale. It is so much fun to read, it has excitement and the tastest relationships you ever want to read about. Now I am not a mushy kind of person but I found that Francis Ray's stories keep me coming back for more.

I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

5 out of 5 stars Frank, a dedicated raptor enthusiast who kept fine records........1998-11-22

The late Saul Frank was dedicated to the study and preservation of peregrines in New York City. He climbed into bridge towers, overhangs of various skyscrapers, and bell towers of City churches. His friend, Ted LeViness, accompanied him on these frequent field trips, and together these men shared in the work of preserving nesting sites by advising those living or working in these areas to leave the peregrines undisturbed. Their work is most commendable and it is a pity that Mr. Saul died before his book could be widely read and praised. His work with the peregrines is a legacy for raptor lovers to continue.

Former firefighter Earl W. Emerson writes two very interesting mystery series: one about small-town Washington State fire chief Mac Fontana and another about Seattle private investigator Thomas Black. All of Emerson's stories are haunted by ghosts from his characters' pasts, and none more so than this latest, where Emerson sends Black on a long, tangled, and not always obvious search through the roots of the African American family of his former police partner, Luther Little. Little's daughter has disappeared, leaving behind a car full of bullet holes, a dead young white man, and nine birth certificates that raise lots of troubling questions about fraud and parental responsibility. As Black grapples with ancient crimes and current human failure, his sharp and sexy lawyer wife, Kathy Birchfield, is--as always--on hand to keep him focussed. Other Thomas Black books in paperback: Deception Pass, The Million-Dollar Tattoo, Nervous Laughter. --Dick Adler

                  Book Description

Everyone who knew Balinda could have told Seattle private eye Thomas Black that the ex-choir girl thumbed a ride with the devil a long time ago. Still, no one expected the pretty young woman to vanish off the face of the earth--leaving in her wake an empty purse, a wrecked car, and a dead Eagle Scout in the backseat. What's more, Balinda never even gave notice at her last job--at a backwater diner where a freezer might keep more than crawdads on ice.

When Balinda's driver is identified, Thomas Black suspects big trouble. For it turns out that the victim was a fifth-grade Tacoma schoolteacher with an impeccable reputation. But tracking the past of that white-bread teacher is increasingly hazardous. Especially when it leads Thomas back to that modest little eat-in/take-out . . . called Catfish Café.

                  2 out of 5 stars Boring........2004-04-17

This is the first book I have read by Emerson. Although it's a small book, it was a difficult read. The writing was a bit stale and uninteresting. There's not a lot going on in this book besides rather straight and to-the-point storytelling. There were a lot of characters--too many to keep track of--suffering from under-development.

In some parts of the novel, I found it difficult to track who was saying what because the thoughts and/or actions of one character were contained in the same paragraph as the dialogue of another character. A small complaint, maybe. But when carried on over a few pages, this style of dialogue writing is unnecessarily confusing and cramps the novel's flow.

I may read another Emerson book, to give him a fair "shake", but it will be much lower on my reading list.

4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect, Not Quite.......2000-10-06

I've read all of Emerson's books, and this one just wasn't quite as great as the rest of them. It's hard to find fault with this writer since his protagonist is such a likeable character, living and working in my favorite city, but this was just kind of a downer for me. Eagerly awaiting Earl's next effort. Where in the damp Northwest will Thomas have his next (mis)adventure? I'd like to write Mr. Emerson personally, but don't know how. Please keep us up to date on coming books.

                  5 out of 5 stars Exciting!.......2000-06-14

PI Thomas Black, an ex-Seattle cop, is asked by his old partner, Luther, for help finding Luther's daughter. The daughter had been driving a car later found turned over in a ditch with a dead body in the back seat. Did she kill him? Is someone trying to kill her? Is she already dead? This was an exciting and very well-written mystery. The tunnel scene at the end had me so riveted I missed my bus stop. Now that's something! Highly recommended!

                  5 out of 5 stars Good One.......2000-01-29

This was the first of the Thomas Black mysteries that I have read and I am hooked. Emerson keeps the action going in each chapter and the ending was unpredictable. The charcaters were well established and so was the atomsphere around the city.

3 out of 5 stars Well written, but predictable.......1999-11-26

Having read the previous reviews, it's kind of laughable that this novel gets reviews of either 5 stars or 1 star. Neither is a particularly accurate judgment, no matter what the standards. The writing is excellent, with imagery as good as any Emerson novel (and better than 95% of the authors out there), the characters are interesting, but the 'mysteries' here are as predictable as any novel out there. I find it disappointing to be 5 chapters ahead of the protagonist, particularly in a story told in a first person narrative. The story of Ben Aldrich could have been interesting, but instead was the most predictable plot device I have seen in any of Emerson's previous books. The ending was so-so, and if not for the strong narrative style, would not have been worth the effort. Dennis Lehane has done a much better job in recent years if presenting racial and class differences while presenting strong detective stories. I expect this to be one weak effort from Mr. Emerson and not indicative of anything, but I hope that as much effort will go into the storyline next time as into the characters and settings.

Not as bad as some reviews, but certainly not on par with some of the other reviews. The idea that the bad reviews are due to a reader not wanting to know that much about a 'poor African American family' is ridiculous, totally unsupported by the reviews themselves, and makes me wonder if Al Sharpton is posting reviews here now. Do not make the mistake of thinking that, because race is major factor in this novel, that that alone should somehow make the work exempt from an accurate review.

1 out of 5 stars try something else.......2003-03-31

i read this book for a child lit class. It was a poorly written book. The plot of this story should be suspenseful because it is a mystery. Unfortunately I found this story too confusing and poorly worded to be suspenseful. The plot line makes little sense. Children readers especially will have a hard time following the illogical story line and the many characters. There are many turns of plot in the story that are explained very poorly. For example, Minnie is at one point pushed into a shack by a small boy. Then an off duty police officer falls into the shack as well. Later this situation is quickly explained, but the situation still makes no logical sense. I liked the idea the seaside setting of this book, but it was explained in so little detail that it was not interesting. The characters should be interesting, but it seems that the author was trying to hard to make the characters quirky. For example, the main character's brother owns a restaurant where he serves peaches and walnut shells as his main ingredients. The author includes many of these types of off the wall descriptions, but not of them seems believable. These sorts of details may work in a book that is better written. Riff is not able to pull this off. I think Riff also was trying to make this book funny, but it was not.

3 out of 5 stars Two books, a short story, and a "retrospective"........2001-01-10

Let me start by saying that these are the first Darkover books I've ever read. Since they were the first ones published, it seems kind of appropriate. The two "novels" (they are short enough to be novellas) are THE PLANET SAVERS and THE SWORD OF ALDONES. Sandwiched in between those two is a short story called THE WATERFALL. Finally, we get an article written by Ms. Bradley regarding her feelings about the Darkover phenomenon.

Let's start with THE PLANET SAVERS. My first impression is that it was way too short. It was only 97 pages. Just as the characters started to get interesting, the story was over. There was no room for any character development aside from the main character and, so, the relationships he had with the others weren't very convincing. Not only this, but the action was too quick. It just seemed to happen so easily. I would have loved to see a lot more detail regarding their trek. It just seemed all to easy for them to succeed. Where was the adversity?

Next came THE WATERFALL. I have no idea what this story was about. The narration was terrible, the inner thoughts of the main character were nearly incomprehensible, and I had no understanding for her motivations. This is a terrible example of short story writing. I understand what happened in the story, but I don't understand why.

Then there was THE SWORD OF ALDONES. This was much longer than the first story in the book. Probably around 180 pages or so. While the story was very interesting, there were too many references to politics and history of both the world and the characters that weren't explained. I was getting a headache trying to follow all the people that were being talked about, but weren't even in the story. There relationships between all the characters were so convoluted and full of unexplained history that it was difficult to keep any of them straight. I'm sure the author had them all straight in her head as she was writing the story, but she did a terrible job of communicating them to the reader. Plus, I got the feeling that this was a pivotal story in the history of Darkover, but I just couldn't get a grip on why.

Finally, there is the DARKOVER RETROSPECTIVE by Ms. Bradley. This was, as near as I can tell, published in 1980 and so is a bit out of date. In it, she discusses the history behind the development of the Darkover saga and how it came to be. It's an interesting read for anyone who's read a lot of the books, but a lot of the significance was lost on me since I'd only read these two.

Anyway, if you're a fan of Darkover, this is probably a must have. If you're just starting out, you might want to try THE BLOODY SUN instead.

The planet savers is magical novel, in it al the elements of darkover novels are present, but it reaches deeper into the conflict of the non-human and human relation with the aded confusion the telepatic contact brings into it. This novel brings back darkover known caracters such as Regis Hastur in contact with the non human habitants of their world, an with terrans, who are trying to place themselves in one world or the other, and finding it imposible.

3 out of 5 stars the first Darkover novel.......2005-04-01

"The Planet Savers" is the very first Darkover novel written by Marion Zimmer Bradley. It is a rather slim volume, my copy only had 91 pages, but it tells a fairly complete story. While this novel doesn't seem to fit in with the other Darkover novels, it does help to explain a little bit about who the Trailmen are, which is never explained in any depth in other Darkover novels. Bradley also explains why this novel doesn't quite fit with the other Darkover novels and how this novel came to be in the forward to the book. It is fairly interesting to understand how Bradley conceptualized Darkover.

This short novel tells the story of the 48 year Trailmen Fever. This is a nasty plague like sickness that seems to crop up every 48 years in Darkover's history, and Darkover is about to enter into a plague year. Now that the Terrans are back on Darkover, they are determined to end the plague. But the only way to do that is to get the cooperation of the Trailmen who are immune (and might in some way be a carrier). The Trailmen are fiercely territorial and violent to trespassers. But as a young child the human (the Trailmen aren't considered completely human, I'd imagine more like Neanderthal Man) Dr Jason Allison was raised by the Trailmen and is being recruited to lead the expedition to ask for the help of the Trailment. But Dr Allison seems to suffer from multiple personalities. One is a doctor Jay Allison who is a talented Doctor, but doesn't remember the language of the Trailmen and is something of a wuss. The other is Jason, a rougher man who is fully at ease in physical situations and is still fluent in the language and culture of the Trailment. Somehow a Terran doctor is able to revert Jay to Jason and the adventure begins.

It is a decent enough novel, and it involves other characters familiar to the Darkover reader, in particular Regis Hastur, who is a major player in other novels. As a standalone Darkover novel, "The Planet Savers" isn't anything special and I would not recommend it to anyone who wasn't trying to read all of the Darkover novels (as I am).

4 out of 5 stars An interesting story for you Darkover fans..........2003-06-13

Nobody had reviewed this book, so I thought I would. This was one of the first Darkover books I read, and I enjoyed it very much. The Darkover books seem to vary in quality from slightly interesting to absolutely fabulous, but I'd rate this one as very good. It was first written in 1962, so it's a little dated, but the main character was interesing and it gives true Darkover fans some insights into some little-explored areas of Darkovan life.

5 out of 5 stars What MZB thought of Sword of Aldones.......2003-01-24

Yes, I knew Marion. After helping me sell my first novel, House of Zeor, she became my writing mentor for many years, and I can safely say she taught me maybe 80% of what I know and today teach about writing -- maybe more -- in workshops such as the one at Westercon.

Sword of Aldones was my absolute all time favorite Darkover novel, and that's still true today -- which was a disappointment to MZB.

You see SoA was her first actual forray into attempting to take the embarrassingly juvenile "Sevener" series she wrote for personal amusement (as we today write Star Trek and Buffy stories)and turn it into a professional product.

It's sale was a milestone in her life and professional career -- but she always knew and felt that it had technical and structural flaws. She felt the characters did a lot of running around, and people, issues and things popped out of nowhere, and the whole thing lacked a central motivational backbone.

But you see - that is what I love about it.

I just made up all the missing parts and never missed them.

Thus while the rewrite of this part of Darkovan history is now the actual basis of the series, and SoA is ignored -- I found the rewrite less enjoyable because it told me the answers to all the unanswerable questions posed in SoA (which I had so much fun answering for myself).

Because MZB and I are so very - VERY - different people, of course what I made up to explain the inexplicable is very different from what she eventually supplied.

However, if you are as much of a Darkover fan as I am (I found Darkover when I was a Freshman at the U. of Calif at Berkeley - which is when I also discovered Theodore Bikel -- these two having literally changed my life) -- then you need to read and compare these two books and decide for yourself which is the actual foundation of the Darkover series.

At the same time you will discover one of the foundations of my own Sime Gen Universe, now available on amazon.com. Sime Gen: The Unity Trilogy is much more like Sword of Aldones than it is like Sharra's Exile.

                                5 out of 5 stars Better than Sharra's Exile?.......1999-01-26

I can't believe I'm the first to review this book. Where are all you loyal "freinds of darkover" hiding. Anyway I never read "Sharra's Exile" but I am well aware that this is the original story of Lew Alton and his dealings with the Sharra Matrix. Which is why I never bothered with Sharra's Exile, shoot read The heratige of hastur and this one and your all caught up. I like this one because it doesn't go to far into the characters, cause they always have the same problems no matter what family they come from, which actually makes me read more to actually find out what is going on. The ending is anti-climactic but who cares, Sharra's dead right? NOT!

                                            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Alternative Medicine Guide to Women's Health 2.......2001-03-01

Alternative Medicine Guide to Women's Health 2 is "about alternative approaches to women's health--approaches not generally understood and, at this time, not endorsed by the medical establishment." The authors, Burton Goldberg and the editors of Alternative Medicine, recommend that readers discuss all alternative treatments with their physicians. They say that many women "have found their physicians to be open to new ideas."

Seven conditions are fully discussed: fibrocystic breast disease, breast cancer, osteoporosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, environmental illness, and depression. The causes of each are detailed, along with major symptoms and testing procedures.

Alternative medicine therapies are provided for each condition. The authors also include explanations of why the alternatives may be better than conventional medicine. Addresses and phone numbers are provided for doctors, clinics, and laboratories that offer testing and other assistance. Twenty-two patient success stories attest to the effectiveness of alternative treatments.

The writing is easy to understand, with "quick definitions" sprinkled throughout the text. Drawings and photographs clarify technical descriptions. The endnotes include the sources of information on which the book is based, and can be used by those wishing to do their own research.

Goldberg says his book "is here to tell you that you don't have to live with your health problems" and "that alternative medicine has practical solutions for identifying and treating the underlying causes and thus can reverse the illness itself."

Alternative Medicine Guide to Women's Health 2 emphasizes prevention of disease, and is a must-have for women of all ages.
