Walter Mosley's Easy Rawlins has few illusions about the world--at least not about the world of a young black veteran in the late 1940s in Southern California. His stint in the Army didn't do anything to dissuade him from his belief that justice doesn't come cheap, especially for men like him. "I thought there might be some justice for a black man if he had money to grease it," Easy says. Fired from his job on the line at an aircraft plant, he's in danger of losing his home, symbol of his tenuous hold on middle class status. That's a good enough reason to accept a white man's offer to pay him for finding a beautiful, mysterious Frenchwoman named Daphne Monet, last seen in the company of a well-known gangster. Easy's search takes the reader to an L.A. few writers have shown us before--the mean streets of South Central, the after-hours joints in dirty basement clubs, the cheap hotels and furnished rooms, the places people go when they don't want to be found. Evocative of a past time, and told in a style that's reminiscent of Hammet and Chandler, yet uniquely his own, Mosley's depiction of an inherently decent man in a violent world of intrigue and corruption rang up big sales when it was published in 1990 (although the movie version, with Denzel Washington as Easy, never found the audience it deserved). The minor characters are deftly and brilliantly developed, especially Mouse, who saves Easy's life even as he draws him deeper into the mystery of Daphne Monet. Like many of Mosley's characters, Mouse makes a return appearance in the succeeding Easy Rawlins mysteries, such as A Red Death, Black Betty, and White Butterfly, every one of which is as good as Devil in a Blue Dress, his first. --Jane Adams

Easy Rawlins is an ex-military man looking to get by after the war. He loses his job, and is looking to do something else to pay the bills. He falls into a private investigator type of job, being asked to track down a white woman that likes to hang out in black clubs.

It is all not quite as simple as that of course. Time for some music, violence, and the other usual bits and pieces.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Atmospheric Writing.......2007-06-01

DEVIL IN A BLUE DRESS is the first in Walter Mosley's "Easy Rawlins" mysteries, featuring a black private detective in 1940s Los Angeles.

I enjoyed this novel quite a bit. DEVIL IN A BLUE DRESS is incredibly well written for a first novel, and features some of the best dialogue I've ever read in a book of this type. Mosley does a great job of portraying the atmosphere of the 1940s, and how the races related to one another during that time period. In many ways, this is what great fiction is about -- transporting the reader to a completely different time and place. Mosley succeeds admirably in doing exactly this.

Unfortunately, Mosley stumbles a bit with his incredibly convoluted plot. DEVIL IN A BLUE DRESS is a relatively short novel, but it's overstuffed with a series of minor characters who all have complex interrelationships with one another. Toward the end, when Mosley begins explaining these relationships, the plot gets incredibly confusing. As a result, I felt the ending lacked punch.

Still, this book is superb in many ways. I was enormously impressed with Mosley's skill with language, characterization and dialogue. I will definitely be purchasing some of his other books.

3 out of 5 stars substantially overrated.......2007-03-11

'Devil in a Blue Dress' has a oodles of atmosphere and quirky characters but the plot is so convoluted that this reader was bored with it all half way through. Kudos to the author for capturing the feel of 1940s Los Angeles. But I think he went a bit haywire in trying to stitch together a story with too many odd characters and mini plot twists,

Bottom line: rather disappointing after a promising start. 'Devil in a Blue Dress' does not inspire me to read anything else by this author.

3 out of 5 stars good story.......2006-11-10

Not sure why but I wasn't as taken with this novel as I have been with the other of his books. Don't get me wrong, this was a good book but it's wasn't up to his usual standards.

5 out of 5 stars Distinctive Character.......2006-09-16

I read Devil in a Blue Dress in one sitting. Obviously, writer Jonathan Kellerman did too, because he later wrote, "I read Devil in a Blue Dress in one sitting and didn't want it to end. An astonishing first novel." Fortunately for Mosley fans, there are more Easy Rawlins mysteries. Devil in a Blue Dress remains my favorite. It's set in 1948 in Los Angeles. Easy Rawlins is a war veteran just fired from his job at a defense plant. (This is the role Denzel Washington plays in the movie.) Devil is much more than a hard-boiled mystery. The book left me wanting to read more about Easy Rawlins whereas many of the Hammett/Chandler/Cain novels are so formulaic that I have trouble remembering which ones I've read. Not a problem with Devil in a Blue Dress.

When Roger Harris, editor of the Books section of the Star Ledger recomended all the Easy Rawlings novels, someone gave me the 3-book set as a present.

You want to get the three book set! The plots are complicated but there are no loose ends, the characters are strongly drawn, and Mr. Mosley has created a world you will want to return to after reading each novel.

Read them in chronological order, and enjoy!

Autumn Adams never planned to follow in her mother's footsteps as Chicago's answer to Martha Stewart--she can't cook, doesn't clean, and would rather play soccer than discuss the joys of white bathtub grout. Then some lunatic starts sending her threats in the mail and Audie finds herself under the protection of simmering, sexy Detective Stacey Quinn, a man determined to examine her every nook, cranny, and ex-boyfriend in his effort to find the stalker. A disarming combination of macho cop and sweet charmer, Quinn is hard to resist. But with Audie's bad luck at finding and holding on to Mr. Right, she think it's best to keep her distance....Quinn soon discovers that the real Audie is an alluring blend of fantasy babe and tender-hearted female all wrapped up in what he can only hope is leopard-print underwear. She's not what he's always pictured for himself, but could she be everything he'll ever need?Digging through Audie's many layers could turn out to be the hottest, craziest, sexiest bit of detective work Quinn has ever attempted....if it doesn't kill him first.

Audie Adams stepped unwillingly into her mother's shoes as Homey Helen, a `Household Hints Queen'. The newspaper column, television appearances and general syndicated business are worth a squillion dollars, and Audie hates every single second of it. She'd rather be out on the soccer field training kids to play, but she promised her murdered mother she'd carry on the tradition. Along comes tall, tough, seasoned Detective Stacey Quinn, ready to defend and protect her from a stalker who's sending threatening letters. A take-no-prisoners, deep thinking detective, Quinn first suspects Audie of sending the letters to herself as a publicity stunt. !!! That notion doesn't impress Audie, let me tell you, and the sparks begin to fly. ... sparks? What an understatement. These two are incredibly combustible! Quinn falls hard for Audie, and pushes her past her emotional and physical comfort zones reeeeeaaaal fast. It's a delight to read his dogged determination to get her into his arms and bed. Along the way Audie's mother's murder is also solved, and the stalker is unmasked. This is a great debut from Susan Donovan - surprisingly tender while being full of intrigue, laughs and hot, hot sizzle. We loved it.

A haunting tale of love, music, and magic on the stormy coast of Scotland. After the loss of his wife, Scottish fiddle player Richard Brennan moves to Australia to escape the ghosts of his former life. Six years later, he returns for his father's funeral and decides to remain in his father's desolate cottage in the north of Scotland, gathering together the threads of his former life, scratching out a living playing music. Then Richard meets Ailish, the enigmatic young woman who's ethereal singing haunts the bay by moonlight. As their relationship builds, the secrets of his family's past are brought to light, one by one, leaving them to confront a history that is both terrifying and fantastic-a legacy that may well cost Richard his soul.

3 out of 5 stars Yawning modern day telling of the Selkies Seal People mythology of Celtic.......2007-09-07

The story of the Selkies Seal People is a fascinating one; unfortunately, this tale of Richard Brennan and his family's history of drowning at sea and their link to the Selkies is a bit of a yawner. Brennan comes home from Australia to Scotland for his father's funeral - a place he hasn't been in the years since the death of his wife - to drowning. As memories of his lost love haunt him, can't get back to Australia and his new love fast enough...but, once back in Australia, he is drawn to the cottage of his youth and returns to make peace with his past and the past of his ancestors.

With fairly well written prose and uninspired dialog, *Swim the Moon* is ultimately a real snooze of a read. Nothing about the story ever draws the reader in too deeply.

                                3 out of 5 stars Beautiful writing.......2003-07-19

This is a puzzle: although this book was beautifully written, and makes me want to go Scotland, something didn't click for me. The premise is great, the characters are fine...maybe it is a bit overwritten, with too much description and not enough really happening. Maybe a bit too much "naval-gazing"... I think a strong edit would have helped a lot. But I can see that this is a book where this opinion could well be a minority. This new author seems to have great potential and I'll definitely read his next book.

                                3 out of 5 stars Good Story.......2002-02-13

The idea of the story is very well though of. There is a lot of depth to the character's and their history that proves the author's ability to write. This book also includes very good scenery descriptions that make you feel like you are in Scotland with the characters. The reason why I rated this book so low is because..well..not much HAPPENS. It wasn;t one of those books with an intruiging plot so that you just can't set it down. I would pick it up every once and a while just to see if it would get better, and it didn't really pick up till more than half way through the book. I good read, but nothing that you can;t miss out on

Paul Brandon is one of those writers that I can immediately find a kindred spirit with. His descriptions of scenery are breathtaking, and he reveals the subtle nuances of human emotions and actions with intensity and vitality. A great read, from an accomplished writer with a bright future. There aren't a lot of books that I would buy (being of Scottish descent I tend to borrow them from the library!), however this is one that I intend to add to my collection.

                                4 out of 5 stars A touch of magic.......2001-11-21

I've heard those multi-volume fantasy epics are described by publishers as "extended fantasy products." It's a sign that fantasy these days is dominated more by marketers than by storytellers. So when a new and fresh approach comes along that defies genre, that grounds itself in a reality that we know and yet takes us to another world in our imagination, it can only be a good thing. Paul Brandon has offered us that new and fresh approach, and I for one am delighted.

Swim the Moon is the story of Richard Brennan, a man struggling to find new meaning in a life that was stripped of it after the death of his wife. He finds it in remote northern Scotland, in a place so wild and rugged that it may as well be a fantasy otherworld.

Brandon's strength is his ability to create a sense of place through his prose. Sometimes aching passages of description enhance the reader's sense of Richard's isolation. There is no "big twist" at the end. I'm unconvinced that Brandon ever intended to create one. What we see as we accompany Richard on his emotional journey is the way our lives become entangled with fantasy until we can't extricate ourselves. There is a sense of timelessness about this story, of myth and magic. Richard's choice is inescapable but the haunting resolution of the novel is that, in the end, he doesn't want to escape it.

Make no mistake. Not much happens in this book. If you are looking for a racy plot of epic adventure, look to those extended fantasy products at your local Borders. This one is for the romantics and the dreamers...

I ordered this book along with "The Smart Woman's Guide to Plastic Surgery" and "Change your Looks, Change your Life" for patients in my office. These others were FAR SUPERIOR in every aspect-- depth of information, pros and cons, etc. While reading this book, I kept thinking that this read like a poorly researched high school term paper. Rather than clear, concise information, it had a lot of pointless "filler words" as well, causing me to wonder if their editor told them they had to beef it up from a two page outline in order to sell it as a book. I was very disappointed in this and highly recommend purchasing the others instead.
