Book Description

This comprehensive text is now updated and includes equitable coverage of fine and commercial art. Media and methods span from the traditional to computer design, and a global emphasis reveals the design solutions seen around the world. The critiquing process begun in the analysis of student examples will be useful to students preparing for applied design disciplines. The art of women and non-Western cultures provide a broad base of visual examples.

This book is beneficial in learning the vocabulary and basics of Graphic Design. I did find that it was necessary to go outside the book to fully understand Principles of Unity. The book is an excellent resource for the beginning Graphics Major.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Manual for the Aspiring or Proffesional Artist.......2002-08-29

I am an artist. It is more than a career choice, it is a lifestyle. If you want your art to be more effective, for personal or public reasons, studying design principles is paramount! I can't stress enough the importance of studying the elements and functions of design elements. This text, Design Principles & Problems, will put you on the right course for studying this subject. Currently we are using this text in my Design Foundations class. It is a rich maunual with many comparitive illustrations to referance during the course of your study. This isn't a book that you use, then discard, it is a keeper!

4 out of 5 stars This book has many strengths, but some important weaknesses.......1999-10-21

I have used Design Principles and problems for several years to teach Basic Two-Dimensional Design to both art majors and non-art majors. It is clearly written and well structured, with emphasis on the design principles and elements. I particularly like the chapters on the Unifying Principles, Shape and Form, and Color.

There are many excellent projects and student examples, plus an explanation of what each project is trying to achieve.

I do find, however, that I have to suppliment the text with a few chapters from other books and my own notes. Particularly, I am referring to the lack of any depth on the importance of the grid as one important formal way to create structure. Another area I find lacking is a chapter on structure itself with the many sources in nature as examples. The importance of the use of the Golden Mean is also not covered, even while it is still used by many contemporary artists and was used by many artists in 19th century as an understructure in creating a painting. For instance, the analysis on Seurat's "Circus Sideshow" talks about the repetition of the brush strokes, textures, colors, and gaslights as a means to unify the picture but neglects the fact that the entire picture is divided up into squares and rectangles with a loose grid formed by the continuation of the edges of figures and rectangles. It is at once an asymmetrical picture with strong use of approximate symmetry on both sides of the central musician. The Golden Mean is at work in the creation of the proportions in this picture yet is never mentioned.

Because of these shortcomings I continue to look for alternatives and go back to using classics like Lauer's Design Basics from time to time, supplimented with examples from Wucius Wong's books and those of my own students.

All in all, though, Design Principles and Problems has many strengths and it most definitely belongs in your library if you teach Basic Design.

The book has minor water damage(not a big deal) and arrived really fast. Thanks for getting it to me before my classes got crazy.

5 out of 5 stars I give it an A..........2006-12-30

I needed this book for one of my college classes and the Amazon price was almost 3/4 cheaper then in the schools book store. This book was only used for about 3-4 months and from what I saw from the textbook... it was great. I learned a lot and I might keep it around just in case I need it for a future class. But overall, I give it an A...

5 out of 5 stars Everything you know about design principles but forgot.......2000-01-02

Pros: A definite must-have book and recommended reading for designers, artists and teachers. Excellent for art teachers seeking project ideas for students in traditional art/design media, also provides a design refresher for teachers with students in digital media, as the principles apply to web, cd-rom and new media design (but not animation. However, there is a section on objects in 3D space).

This book covers key design principles and art techniques that you may have forgotten after art school.

Cons: A lot easier to read for precticing artists and designers; may be brain freeze to art students goggling at the compact knowledge. Not recommended reading unless student is mature enough/is in the higher years/is truly interested.

Initial impression based on format, book thickness and the language used may appear too stiff and seem like very heavy reading at first, specially to first time art educators. Read the book in topics you need in order to digest info better.

After a while the format becomes familiar, the information astoundingly clear/well researched and you realize the book was brilliantly organized. Eureka!

As with all art/design reference book collections, this makes a good backbone book that could be supplemented by others, as it cannot cover everything. Ex: For selecting/using type and organizing layouts try "The Non-Designer's Design Book" by Robin Williams, Peachpit Press. There's a web book version as well.

Final comment: Basic Visual Concepts and Principles, a thumbs up, definitely must have reference.

Instead of emphasizing mathematics, this work spotlights the practical application of systems analysis and modeling in the real-world environment. Working from an integrated case study of a municipal solid waste management problem, it clearly demonstrates the validity of using systems analysis and modeling to successfully provide solutions. The computer programs include focus on model formulation, planning and design issues. Traditional systems analysis and modeling topics are also covered and graphics, charts and diagrams aid in comprehension.

      Product Description

What makes us who we are? From a scientific viewpoint, any individual's existence is improbable at best. Consciousness as an actuality is inarguable; its nature, however, remains elusive. This work argues the view of self as a field of pure consciousness, debating the existence of a continuing self and drawing conclusions about this entity and its relation to the physical body and the physical world.
Beginning with an exploration of the relationship between mind and matter, it discusses ostensible psi phenomena such as extra-sensory perception and psychokinesis and their implications for our understanding of the mind and the cosmos. Additional topics include the perennial mind-body problem; the role of consciousness in quantum mechanics (and conversely the role of quantum mechanics in the study of consciousness); the anthropic principle; and evidence for Intelligent Design. Quasi-religious questions such as the survival of consciousness after death are also addressed.

      5 out of 5 stars Author's Overview.......2007-05-19

In the interest of full disclosure, this review may not be entirely unbiased, as I am the author.

This book examines the possible nature of the soul or self in light of modern scientific research, including neuroscience, quantum mechanics and cosmology. It also contains a critical review of parapsychological research into such psi phenomena as ESP and psychokinesis.

Most people identify themselves with the person that they are, in the sense of a biological organism that exists from conception until death, as well as the associated train of thoughts, memories, and emotions that forms one's personality. However, the view that you are your physical body cannot be correct, as you have existed for many years, while your present physical body shares few, if any, molecules with your body of ten years ago. Somehow, you seem to have survived the death of that previous body. Also the probability that the exact set of genes that formed your body would have arisen is virtually zero. Your lifetime of several decades is infinitesimal when compared to the 13.7 billion year history of the (observable) universe. Yet, the moment in time that has somehow been mysteriously selected as the present just happens to fall within the lifetime of your body. Thus, your existence at the present moment would seem to be an incredible coincidence. Perhaps the explanation is that you have always existed.

Similarly, you are not the onrush of emotions, memories and thoughts that constitute your personality. These also change from moment to moment, while you persist. Someone (in the future) might be able download your personality into several androids at once. It is not intuitively plausible that your consciousness would inhabit all the androids simultaneously. You are not your stream of consciousness but the vessel through which it flows. You are not your personality.

The book argues that your essential self is a field of pure consciousness. Further, it notes that the results of research on split-brain patients, hypnosis and "blindsight" suggest that each human brain may be inhabited by multiple selves, with each self under the illusion that it is in sole control of the body.

The book also contains a thorough review of parapsychological research into such phenomena as telepathy and precognition. Such phenomena suggest that minds or consciousnesses are at least in part "nonphysical" (in the sense of not being readily explainable by current theories of physics). It also reviews research into phenomena that suggest the human personality may survive the death of the physical body, such as apparitions, hauntings, mediumship, near-death experiences, and seemingly accurate memories of past lives reported by children.

In view of the intimate dependence of mental phenomena on the activity and structure of the physical brain, it is argued that personality traits and memories are not likely to survive the destruction of the entire physical brain at death. A center of pure consciousness, however, could survive. In fact, the widespread belief that your consciousness enters the body in the womb and does not leave until death is mired in the identification of the self with the Person. It is not inconceivable that you entered your brain only recently (with the memories of your previous existence perhaps still stored in the brain of the crow outside your bedroom window).

The book also considers the implications of quantum mechanics for a theory of mind, the evidence for intelligent design, and the anthropic principle in physics (the notion that the laws of the physical universe seem fine-tuned to support the presence of conscious observers).

My qualifications for writing the book are as follows. I have a BA (magna cum laude) in psychology from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in experimental psychology from the University of Michigan. I have contributed to the literature relating to parapsychology and the mind-body problem for over three decades. Not only have I served on the editorial board of the Journal of Parapsychology, but I have contributed articles to such skeptical outlets as the Skeptical Inquirer and the Skeptic's Handbook of Parapsychology. My previous book, The Nature of Mind, was highly praised for providing about the only available fair and impartial review of parapsychological research.

Conflicts between the writer and the company and others lead to yet another comic series being late, and stalled, and everyone lost interest, me included. Finally coming across this, it does seem to be thrown together.

5 out of 5 stars A Solid FInish to the Greatest Superhero Story Ever.......2006-07-05

My friend Richard calls "Rising Stars" the "Greatest Superhero Story Ever". Richard has vastly less experience reading comics than I do, so I find it hard to completely concur. I can remember some storylines from back in the day that were pretty amazing. But this series is definitely up there, and it blew me away.

Part three is a solid ending that treats the story well, but to me it never quite lives up to the level of the first two collections. Of course, that's really more of a statement about how AWESOME the first two parts are. This part is still VERY good, just not quite up to par with them.

Check this one out if you love superheroes.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great Story.......2006-01-06

This wraps up the Rising Stars story part 17-24 which was delayed for quite a bit of time because of a dispute with the publisher. The 3rd trade wraps up all the loose ends and a nice fashion. The writing is top notch. I like Brent Andersons pencils, but I prefer someone else to ink him. When he does his own, it often looks muddy to me. You can pick up the Visitations trade which collects all the hard to find short tales published. You can also go for the mega hard cover collector's edition which has everyone in one book.

5 out of 5 stars Great graphic Novel.......2005-12-27

This is Rising Stars Vol.3 Chapters 17-24
The 3rd part of a 3 part series.

You made your choices... This is the ending result... All the powers in the Universe and in the end, only human after all.
You wish you did better, you wish you had known but... being human means coming to the world without an owners manual.

                  I highly recommed the series.

                  Book Description

Since its publication in October of 1930, this classic spoof on textbook history has sold four million copies worldwide and has itself become a part of humor history. This anniversary edition is a celebration of this uproarious satire's lingering appeal and is enhanced by brilliant new drawings by cartoonist Stephen Appleby.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as I remembered it.......2007-09-24

I read it many years ago and thought it was wonderful. Today, at 79 I cannot see the humor in it that I once did. I would not recommend it.

                  5 out of 5 stars A very British book.......2007-03-21

I was delighted to find this book being reprinted. It is funny in the same way that "Monty Python" was at its best. You do need a fair knowledge of English history to appreciate many of the jokes. Sometimes I had to read a 'real' history book to figure out what this one was talking about, but strangely, I can remember the history I learned this way far better than I remember the history I was taught in school.

The book covers English history from pre-Roman times to 1918. Many English schoolbooks still do, not wanting to admit that Britannia no longer rules the waves.

                  1 out of 5 stars Great disappointment.......2007-01-10

I'd looked forward to receiving this "cult classic" little book, knowing that it had delighted generations of mischievous English public-school types. I guess it is what one ought to have supposed: a book full of silly upper-class-twit jokes. (Haw-haw! What will Master think!)

Anyway, for us who are more prosaically born and raised, this book offers no reward other than insight into the childhood of a frivolous (if oxonian) class of recently and soon to be dead English aristocracy.

5 out of 5 stars I just ordered ANOTHER copy.......2006-10-21

... because you can lose a lot of copies in 50 years; it's been about that long since I first read it.

Absolutely hilarious, in the understated Jerome Jerome way in which the Brits excel.

By the way, could we nominate the two-star review above for "least insightful review ever"? "History for Dummies", feh.

5 out of 5 stars Can Americans Understand This Book?.......2006-05-18

As a US Citizen, I approached this noted history book with trepidation. Would I be put off by high-faluting British snootiness on a subject I knew nothing about?

I'm pleased to say that this informative volume answers all your questions about Great Britain's history without making you feel like a fool. I learned how the British became the "Top Country" by winning many memorable battles which will long be remembered. And I now know how to tell apart Napoleon and Nelson: Napoleon held his arm like THIS and Nelson held his arm like THAT. No more confusion.

Will Americans understand this book? YES! It's even funny in places-- is this intentional, do you suppose?
