Book Description
The quickest way to become an experienced coach.
You thought you were going to sign your kid up for the local youth league. Now, here you are, a newly appointed coach. Part of the successful Baffled Parent's series, Coaching Youth Baseball has everything you need to manage, motivate, and encourage an eight to twelve -year-old ball team.
Written by a four-time New England Coach of the Year, it shows novice coaches exactly how to go about building skills, developing teamwork and sportsmanship, and creating an experience that both kids and coach enjoy.
Bill Thurston leaves no question unanswered. He addresses both broad organizational issues like how to get uniforms or arrange for practice time and more focused specifics like what to do at the first practice. The Baffled Parents Guide is the ultimate coaching guide for the uninformed.

Great book on Coaching youth sports.......2006-06-02
This entire series is great for beginning to intemediate coaches. Plenty of great ideas to try on your team.
Worked for me.......2004-09-11
I bought this book after I had volunteered to coach a Pinto League (7-8 yr old) team that my son was on. This book provided a good starting point for getting organized and creating a good practice worksheet. Sound baseball fundamentals, being organized and having fun in a supportaive environment lead to a successful and happy Little League experience.
Good Starter Book.......2002-03-02
A Well Organized book, as a rookie coach last season, it gave me what I needed to know. I particularly liked the overview of safety presented up front -- too many people take this for granted and stupid injuries can result.
Be Advised though that the rest of the Baffled Parents Series doesn't necessarily live up to the standard set by this book - I found the Basketball book very average.
Baffled No More!.......2000-07-08
This was the first "Coaching" book I have purchased. The book provides excellent insight into what is truly involved in coaching a youth baseball team. The practice planner section was a big help in conducting an organized and effectice practice. I highly recommend this book to beginning coached like myself or seasoned veterans.

An Excellent Pick.......2003-02-28
This book is an excellent resourse for any coach. There is a chapter for each fundamental of the game. Each chaper has a nice progression of drills and a purpose behind each. Each individual drill has a referenced prerequisite section, a detailed break-down and diagram of the drill, and crucial teaching points as a ruberic. It also has a section to help you plan your practices for the entire season.
I have read many books on basketball instruction and this one is a must have.

Easy to understand and innovative teaching techniques........1999-10-16
This book is a must for all coaches and kids. It really helped my planning of practices for my 8th grade team. Coach Grawer's practice ideas are not only effective teaching methods that helped improve my players' skills, but also were fun drills that made the kids look forward to coming to practice. Many of my players now use his techniques on their own at home...away from the official practice time.

A Hunger Like No Other.......2007-09-19
Although I found this book to be enjoyable, it did not require or engage my entire attention. I was able to read it at work between calls and was able to keep up with what was happening. This book to me seemed to drag at times and at other times moved along. I am not yet certain if it is going to stay in my collection or be passed on. I have not yet started the second book in the series although I will read it and have purchased the third book. It just did not reach out and grab me.
So So.......2007-09-14
I liked the start of the book but after a while it was a little fustrating. It took for ever for them to have sex. The theme was good and the charters are enjoyable. I think the charter Emma went a little overboard by playing really had to get. Took her for ever to come around. However, I still plan to read the rest of the series.
Sexy, Daring, but Something's Missing.......2007-09-01
I could hardly put this book down, especially the spicy scenes, which were written perfectly! And the plot of the book was believeable, and well-written.
But when Emmaline and Lachlain finally come together, the book immedietly goes downhill. Even when they finally have sex, the scene is too short, and not nearly as descriptive as previous scene. From there on is just plot, we don't get any more sexy situations!
And perhaps this is just me, but Emmaline's Valkyrie family were the MOST obnoxious characters I have EVER read in a book. Their logic, tactics, and personalities were grating and flat.
However, I still give the book 4 stars because all other aspects were amazing, and I definitely intend to read more in the series!!!
My first paranormal romance and ....I loved it!!.......2007-08-25
I usually read historical romances (medieval, Georgian, regency & Victorian), but the trend in romance seems to be going in the paranormal direction so I figured I'd give one a try. I was seriously afraid of what I call "rolling eyes syndrome" ; some things are just unbelievable and I was hoping that this wasn't going to be just a bad B-movie read.
I am so surprised! I love this book! It reminds of some of my fav Scottish romances, but MUCH more intense and WAY edgier/darker! The alpha male hero is totally hot Scottish highlander hunk (a real treat for this Julie Garwood fan) and the heroine is this a shy little thing who eventually turns into a kick a*s woman. There's werewolf's, vampire's, Valkyrie, witches, wraiths etc., and Cole (author) does a excellent job introducing and giving background information on each one of these. She does this so well that I became instantly engrossed in the book and simply couldn't put it down. There are tons of really cool secondary characters that each have their own unique powers and personally I can't wait for those sequels!
So if you like historical romance or contemporary for that matter, this is a great place to start checking out paranormals. As for me, I have a feeling this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
Fabulous.......2007-08-20
This is a great book. The character's are so well developed. You really feel like you know these people.

Running out of story.......2006-11-29
Back in the day, Virgin had quite the line of Doctor Who books out. Not all of them were winners and some were rather mediocre (none were super-bad but I read some that came close) but it was nice to have someone publishing Who books on a more or less regular basis. And then, apparently out of nowhere, the BBC decided that they could do a better job and yanked the license away from Virgin, ending both the Missing Adventures line (which this particular book was part of) and the Seventh Doctor focused New Adventures line. You think that none of this is relevant? Well, I'm not finished yet. The last of the Missing Adventures features the fourth Doctor, Romana (the second one, played by Lalla Ward) and the ever-cheerful K-9. Still running from the Black Guardian (don't ask) they wind up on a planet near the end of Time and quickly get wrapped up in events. And what events they are. The humans who live there are at war with the Chelonians who have suddenly decided they want the planet also. Except nobody is really interested in fighting so you have a pseudo-war of sorts, where the respective parties go through the motions of war but basically make empty threats, meet for tea and give each other gifts. It's pretty funny, actually, at least in the beginning. Of course, a third-party decides to interfere with this cheerful balance and starts manipulating the sides closer to actual war, while a fourth-party allows this all to happen for different reasons entirely. Confused, yet? The book is almost too much at some points, with all the different clashing plots going on (oh and K-9 starts running for premier as well) and the tone veering from comedy to a more horrific scenario. Only Roberts' heart doesn't seem to be into the horror and suspense stuff as much, and the book always crackles more when he's trying to be funny. The book is structured just like a regular episode, with four parts and cliffhangers, and it really has that "traditional" feel of the original series, this could have in theory been a story in that season and that's probably the best praise you can give one of these novels. They even land in what appears to be a quarry, a nod to the old series inability to secure a budget for anything, when such quarries were often stand-ins for alien planets and whatnot. Roberts' fourth Doctor is a lot of fun to read, he gets most of the mannerisms right (best scene: getting shot at, the Doctor ducks behind a rock and pulls out a pamphlet called "So You're Caught in a Rocket Attack") and manages to strike a balance between the Doctor's ego and his brilliance, tempered with his slight wackiness. I think he captures Romana fairly well too, the banter between her and the Doctor seems spot-on. The ending is probably the only point where the doom and gloom stuff works, the sense of foreboding feels honest for the most part, even if it verges on info-dump just as it reaches the climax. It's a complex resolution and chances are you're not going to guess every aspect of it but it works for me. And then there's the actual ending, where the writer and the publisher sort of a bid a wink-and-a-nod goodbye to the character and series that served them well for so many years. It's not literature and it's not even the best Who novel but it's well written and entertaining and you can't ask for much more than that, sometimes.
Fun, Funny, and Very Entertaining.......2004-08-05
This is a great 4th Doctor Story. It's absolutely hilarious. Roberts is at his best. Tom Baker and Lalla Ward and K9 are written superbly, as are all the other supporting cast. The plot is interesting, and keeps you guessing with a terrific twist at the end. One piece of irony: you'd think that being free of production budget constraints, Doctor Who writers would expand the sets and locations in their novels, but where does the TARDIS land? Right in a deserted rock quarry!! Where does a lot of action take place? In the quarry! However, even this funny irony makes the book even more charming and captivating somehow. Highly recommended--and easily available as an ebook on the BBC Doctor Who site.
WOW! That should say it all........2001-09-11
Mr. Roberts has written a masterpiece! This book kept me guessing until the very end. Not only was the ending quite a surprise, it was also a very logical ending. Furthermore, getting to the end of this many-paged Dr. Who book happens very quickly as each page leaves the reader anxious to get to the next. This tale was told the way a Dr. Who story needs to be told. Each chapter was a cliffhanger; the Doctor was his wonderfully charasmatic self (as only Tom Baker could portray); K-9 was fabulous (I don't care what others say, I like K-9!); and Romana is simply charming (I love the final scene between the Doctor and Romana). Having not read the New Adventure The Highest Science, I cannot say if the Chelonians are accuratly portrayed in this novel. However, being both a history teacher and a prior military serviceman, - history is full of examples of how enemy soldiers developed friendships- I can appreciate the friendships displayed between the Chelonians and the humans in The Well-Mannered War. All in all, well worth buying at any price. If you are lucky enough to find it, buy it before someone else beats you to it!
A very English ending.......2001-01-30
The TARDIS approaches its maximum distance into the future, and the Doctor forces an emergency materialisation to prevent its destruction. The TARDIS crew find themselves arrive on Barclow, which is a planet claimed by both the humans and the Chelonians, who are waging a war in a very polite fashion (hence the title). But there are also other matters afoot, and a great enemy (whose identity I'm not at liberty to divulge here) is behind a complex plot to destroy the Doctor. Oh, and K9 runs for president as well...
This book is the last of Virgin's Missing Adventures series, featuring past incarnations of the Doctor. The decision not to renew Virgin's license plays a subtle role throughout the book, up to an including the very tongue-in-cheek ending.
The Doctor and Romana are yet again well characterised by Gareth Roberts, and the return of the Chelonian (originally created by Gareth Roberts for the seventh Doctor novel, 'The Highest Science') make a welcome return. The book also looks at a few other important aspects of Doctor Who history and plays a role in setting up the Bernice Summerfield adventure series that Virgin published following BBC re-claiming the Doctor Who license.
It is both a great book and important for defining what was to come.
It's an end, but the moment has been prepared for........2000-09-25
This novel commemorates two endings - it's the last of Virgin's Missing Adventures, set at the end of the period during which Graham Williams produced the TV series. The book consequently has a slightly more melancholy tone than Gareth Roberts' other Missing Adventures, but the wit that made his other stories such a joy to read is still present. The Chelonians - the militaristic giant tortoises featured in Roberts' New Adventures The Highest Science and Zamper - are back, but they're not the villains this time round. The main enemy is initially revealed as a darkness, though there's more to it than that. Then again, there's more to almost everything in TWMW than meets the eye. The last episode (the story being structured as a classic four-parter) has an impressive selection of twists, and a thought-provoking conclusion. TWMW includes plenty of bizarre and witty concepts of the type so often found in Roberts' work and the DW era in which the story is set. The sequence with the possessed photocopier is arguably the best fusion of the comic and the chilling ever to be found in DW in any format. Definitely worth getting if the opportunity presents itself.

Useful.......2007-01-06
This book has gotten me back into doing what I used to do: buying organic. It got expensive, the organic food store is an hour away... and I got lazy. This book woke me up again. It has also raised a desire in me to start my own garden. The information is mostly good, though maybe a little scattered.
I don't believe in evolution; therefore don't believe the earth is "millions" of years old. There is a little bit too much eco-hysteria for my taste, and I don't worship "Mother Earth" either, but those views don't affect the useful information in the book. Some of the info might be outdated by now, so I'd recommend doing some more research before implementing something new (e.g., detoxification).
All in all, a great book to get us to "wake up and smell the coffee" (or else get us to stop drinking it!).
THIS BOOK HAS CHANGED MY LIFE!!!.......2005-12-06
I just finished reading this book and have started to re-read it. I have been so touched by this book; it has tranformed my attitude and thoughts about my health, the earth and environment. I only hope that everyone who reads my review will read this book or, at least, consider an organic diet in support of preventative health and farmer's whose growing methods are replinishing the valuable topsoil and doing away with highly toxic chemicals. It is hard to believe what "modern society" has done to our planet and health in such a short amount of time. I hope that, one person at a time, we can undo the damage that has been done. A sincere Thank You to the late Bernard Jenson for such thorough and insightful research.
Essential health education material.......2005-01-06
The premise of the book's subtitle - Understanding the Link Between Our Food, Our Immunity and Our Planet - got my attention. And, for the most part, the authors succeed in making their central point. They connect the dots between the quality of the soil, the harvest, our immune system, and our health. This level of holistic thinking is an important foundational piece of any conversation about the systems that are involved in creating personal and planetary health.
The two authors contribute separate sections of the book. Dr. Bernard Jenson is often eloquent and impassioned, and his photographs alone are a powerful testimonial to his ideas. Mark Anderson writes knowledgably about nutrition and provides interesting historical background on agricultural science and nutrition research - and the work of special interest groups to suppress unfavorable findings and individuals, and corporations who promote bogus notions. [Did you know that smoking cigarettes was once advertised as an aid to digestion? Yikes!]
On the whole, this book mostly lives up to its promise, but it does so somewhat unevenly. Most scientific material is explained and substantiated in some detail - vitamin C, candida albicans, calcium, and the symbiotic relationship between plants and soil. But other subjects receive such superficial treatment that they would have been better off omitted - the chapter on cleansing and detoxification is too general to be of real use to anybody considering implementing such a program.
The content and message of the book would have been better served with more skillful editing because the material often comes across as somewhat haphazardly organized, making it harder to reconnect the parts to the whole. Also, given the publication date, 1989, I'd recommend double-checking some of the theories and explanations offered, since our understanding of how things work - whether in the body or the environment -- has undoubtedly changed in 15 years; ditto for some of the doomsday predictions data.
Astounding.......2004-12-12
This book should be adopted by our school systems. the most profound read I think I've ever had. a real eye opener.
Easy to read, and to comprehend.......2000-12-13
This book is very profound. While browsing through the local bookstore, the title of the book jumped out at me and basically told me, "OK.. you will buy me".
I was psyched to read this book simply because of the title, even though when I skimmed through it in the store it looked great. This book is one of the best books I have read when it comes to every aspect of nutrition and health, all rolled into one. I was very impressed.
I agree with the authors views 100% on how man is killing man, and his advice on how to counteract the craziness is exceptional. I would recommend this book to anyone who stumbles upon this review.
