Reading a Clive Cussler novel is like watching several movies at once. He's a master of the jump cut, moving the action from one continent to another with an entirely different cast of characters, good guys and bad, in each place. He always manages to pull the various characters, plots, and counterplots together, though, and the heroes always triumph in the end after saving the world from eco-terrorists, megalomaniacs with their ambitions primed for world domination, and a few regular old criminals thrown in for good measure. In this new adventure from the National Underwater & Marine Agency (NUMA) files, Kurt Austin and his partner Joe Zavala nearly die during a powerboat race when a pod of dead, bloated gray whales bobs to the surface and obstructs the race course. Attempting to discover what killed the whales, Kurt and Joe track their migratory route to a mysterious underwater laboratory on the Baja Peninsula. Once again they narrowly miss death when the lab explodes, destroying their minisubmarine and almost poaching them alive. What seemed like a simple scientific investigation turns into something very different: a confrontation with a 7-foot Valkyrie who's bent on taking over the earth's depleted freshwater reserves. In order to thwart her plans, Austin and Zavala venture deep into the jungle of the Venezuelan rain forest to find a supposedly mythical tribal goddess (one with a Ph.D. in science, of course) whose secret formula to desalinate seawater can put the kibosh on the Valkyrie's plans. Helped by a husband-wife NUMA team who've already made the goddess's acquaintance, plus the always fascinating techno-toys so beloved of superheroes, Kurt and Joe save the day. But before they do, there's plenty of heart-stopping action, random acts of murder and mutilation, and even a little romance. Great pacing, plenty of gadgets, a strong narrative, and bigger-than-life heroes and villains. If you've run out of summer action flicks already, make your own popcorn and curl up with Blue Gold instead. --Jane Adams

Book Description

KURT AUSTIN -- CLIVE CUSSLER'S NEW HERO FOR THE MILLENNIUM -- BATTLES TO STOP A BILLIONAIRE TYCOON FROM ACHIEVING WORLD DOMINATION

BLUE GOLD

An investigation into the sudden deaths of a pod of gray whales leads National Underwater & Marine Agency leader Kurt Austin to the Mexican coast, where someone tries to put him and his mini-sub permanently out of commission. Meanwhile, in South America's lush hills, a specially assigned NUMA team discovers a mysterious tribe, a mythical white goddess, and a murderous cadre of bio-pirates intent on stealing medicinal secrets worth millions.

Soon, Austin and his crew realize they're working opposite ends of the same grand scheme and must race against time to save the world's freshwater supply from a twisted eco-extortionist. But every step toward salvation takes them deeper into a dense jungle of treachery, blackmail, and death.

In last season's trade paperback original Serpent, Clive Cussler introduced a new series, the NUMA Files, and a hero for the next millennium, Kurt Austin. Serpent was an immediate success -- it spent six weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and hit lists across the country as well. Now, in Cussler's latest NUMA Files adventure, Kurt Austin returns to slake his fans' thirst for action, and drown the plans of nefarious extortionists.

Earth is a paradox -- a fertile world three-quarters covered with water, yet in danger of running dry. Overuse and pollution have drained most of its fresh water, and scientist Francesca Carval's brilliant formula for desalination (a process to convert salt water into fresh) has vanished with her plane over South America. But when Kurt Austin and his NUMA team come across a pod of dead whales, their investigation takes them from the open oceans to the Venezuelan jungle -- where a hunt for Carval places them in the direct line of fire of a cadre bent on controlling the world's supply of fresh water.

With more than 100 million copies of his books sold worldwide, perennial bestselling author Clive Cussler is a publishing phenomenon. A world-class collector of classic automobiles, he has discovered more than sixty lost ships of historic significance with his own NUMA (National Underwater Marine Agency) crew of volunteers. He divides his time between Arizona and Colorado.

5 out of 5 stars Fun to read.......2007-08-02

This is not by any means a brain stormer - it are fun to read action packed stories with just enough dialog to keep things going. I compare Clive's books to a movie that doesn't tax the brain or require 3 1/2 hours of your life. It is not "epic" or historically(but you can def tell he likes his planes and guns, accurate details) important, its just fun. That is enough in this case.

3 out of 5 stars More Cussler like than the recent Dirk Pitt novels.......2006-12-01

In all actuality I would probably give this book 3.5 stars as it is a fast paced and enjoyable read and employs all the trademarks of Clive Cussler's most successful works and few of the detraction's of his recent novels.

This is the second novel from the NUMA files featuring Kurt Austin and Joe Zavala. Their adventure begins when they are almost killed while racing speedboats they literally almost run into a pod of dead grey whales that have died from oxygen deprivation. Along the way Kurt and Joe manage to encounter a sociopathic blond Valkyrie, a mythical white goddess and escape numerous perils and traps set by the evil opposition.

What sets this novel apart (and above) the recent Dirk Pitt novels is that this novel has a more gritty, realistic approach. Even though the adventures are fantastic Kurt and Joe deal with them in a fashion that seems far more realistic and sensible than the characters in the recent Dirk Pitt novels. That and it is refreshing to see Clive Cussler and Paul Kemprecos design a plot that is as much about marine biology as it is the quest for world domination by the bad guys. In the early Dirk Pitt novels this was one of the strengths of Clive Cussler's work (that is the science and history behind the novel) and it seems that he has gotten away from those concepts and stretched the limits of plausibility to their furthest limit. It was refreshing to read a novel where the science and history once again seemed to blend effortlessly into the plot line instead of being forced. Blue Gold succeeds as a wonderful escapism novel because the authors stuck to doing what they do best

5 out of 5 stars Excelent, as always.......2006-11-06

This book was an awsome read. The author has come to the top of his profession and is staying there!

4 out of 5 stars Great Environmental Subjects and Actions.......2006-10-16

This is the second of Mr. Cussler's series on NUMA, with main protagonists: Kurt Austin and Joe Zavala. Similar to Clive Cussler's voyages and adventures novels with Dirk Pitt and Al Giordino, here Austin was tandemed again with Zavala.

Being one of Cussler's fan, I found that Blue Gold is a much better novel compared to his disastrous first effort on NUMA, titled "Serpent." Blue Gold emphasized a lot on environmental issues and the usual Cussler's thrills. I found during these last few years, Cussler's novels have became more "unrealistic". Blue Gold surpassed my expectations of a three star read, being finally rated by me as a four-star thriller, action and adventure read. It is a story about a megalomaniac (in this case, a seven-foot female) trying to conquer the world.

It is a real treat to have the Alaskan adventure, in-flight struggle of Dr. Cabral, the Venezuelan encounter, the Chulos, not to mention the Tahoe incident. Great adventures by Great Cussler!

2 out of 5 stars One of his weakest books.......2006-04-03

Whatever it is but something is "wrong" with this book. It might be that I already read too many of Cussler's books before (15?) and therefore the stories and the course of events seem to repeat themselves. The reason could also be that the main characters are not Dirk Pitt and Al Giordino but Kurt Austin and Joe Zavala - even if they are nothing than younger and bigger than life versions of Dirk and Giordino. It might also be the slight change in writing style since Cussler teams up with Paul Kemprecos.

I cannot really put my finger on the reason why I was not thrilled by the book at all. The story is ok but quite simple and the heroes solve the riddles too easily and way too quickly.

For the non-native English speakers the book will be easy to read but it won't keep you glued to it all night long to finish it. It is not really boring but also nothing special.

Maybe you like the book better if this is your first Clive Cussler novel. But on the other hand there are a lot better books that can be recommended if you want to read one of his books!

            1 out of 5 stars What a boring book!.......2005-03-18

I am a student of Tudor History. Thus, I read anything and everything about the period. These Karen Harper books are absolutely the most boring books that have ever been published about Queen Elizabeth the First. If Bess was as stupid as these books make her out to be she wouldnt have lasted long as The Queen!

4 out of 5 stars An Elizabethan feast.......2004-04-30

As in the previous five Elizabeth I mysteries, Harper's latest relies on the details, customs, food and dress of the court to provide at least as much pleasure as the plot, which illuminates the factions and threats endangering Elizabeth's singular rule.

The novel opens in 1564 with the Queen's decision to celebrate an old-style Twelve Day Christmas to please her aged, declining nurse. The Puritans rage, the populace rejoices, and Christmas Eve begins badly, with the murder of the Dresser of the Queen's Privy Kitchen (there are three kitchens - one for the Queen and invited guests, a second for courtiers, and a third for the hordes of minions who do all the work). The man responsible for the elaborate design of the finished dishes, poor Hodge had been hung and garnished with the plumage of the peacock he was preparing.

With the jokester preparing another nasty surprise for each of the 12 days, the Queen gathers her usual Privy Council, but soon finds reason to suspect even them. Courtiers are jealous, greedy, scheming people and even the best are ambitious.

The plot is nicely paced (though the Privy Council red herrings are fairly obvious), but the chief spectacle here is Christmas. A Christmas recipe prefaces each chapter and is featured within during the festivities. The feasts and pageants and costumes are entrancingly described, as is much of the work involved in getting it all done. Excellent in concept and execution.

4 out of 5 stars Wassail! Christmas in Merry Olde England Makes Good Reading.......2003-12-08

Karen Harper's historical mystery series has two things to recommend it, for me, at least. First is the setting: I have always been fascinated by Elizabeth I, a woman who not only survived as a single woman in a man's world where such a state was considered a sign of witchcraft but who built the foundations of an empire that survived her by two centuries. The second is Ms. Harper's talent, which brings both the woman and the time to vivid life, and adds in a mystery that makes the best use of both.

This book doesn't disappoint. All the favorite characters are there: Meg and Ned and Jenks, caught in a love triangle the resolution of which Ms. Harper is drawing out with tantalizing slowness. Harry Carew and William Cecil complete the historical elements of Her Majesty's Privy Plot Council. Dear Kat Ashley, who has been Elizabeth's support for most of her life, is failing, and it is a credit to Ms. Harper's skill with characters that we share in the queen's sadness at the impending loss of her beloved companion.

As for the mystery, it is once again wrapped in the inevitable politics that were as much a part of Elizabeth's life as breathing, and if the outcome and final resolution seem somewhat anticlimactic, that in no way detracts from the reader's enjoyment. THE QUEENE'S CHRISTMAS, like all the Elizabethan Mysteries, is as much to be read for its ability to draw one into an earlier time and place, and for the true history lover that's almost more than enough.

3 out of 5 stars The author and Elizabeth I are in a rut!.......2003-11-17

Here's another Karen Harper mystery in which someone gets killed, Elizabeth I gets in a snit and starts suspecting all of her close friends, and alternately smiles or tears up at a moment's notice. The Queene's Christmas is not a good Christmas present!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic reading experience.......2003-10-02

Six years have passed since Elizabeth was crowned but she and her Secretary of State William Cecil still worry that her enemies will try to take the throne away from her. She makes her childhood friend Robert Dudley the Earl of Leicester and offers him as a husband to her cousin Mary, Queen of Scots. By doing this, she hopes to make Lord Henry Stewart so appealing that Mary will want this weakling and defuse the threat she poses to Elizabeth.

Elizabeth declares that the twelve days of Christmas in 1564 will be a joyous celebration but the Queen's mood turns ugly when one of her cook's is murdered and dressed up in death as a peacock. Elizabeth thinks this killing was aimed at The Earl of Leicester, who many call a peacock because he wears bright colors and therefore indirectly at her. She consults with her trusted Privy Plot Council on this matter. Malicious pranks played on the Queen during the holiday make her suspect everyone except Cecil. When a second murder occurs Elizabeth goes on the offensive and almost gets killed.

THE QUEENE'S CHRISTMAS is a very enlightening historical mystery as the readers sees how Elizabeth feels about her deceased parents and dead sister. The author, using the third person narrative, shows how Elizabeth makes it plain that though she may love, she will not marry because she doesn't trust any man to let her rule in her own right. There are many viable viable who would like Elizabeth dead, which means that readers are treated to a rare cerebral puzzle. Karen Harper is one of the few authors who educates while she entertains.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting and beautiful.......2007-06-20

This book is both haunting and beautiful... it hung around and is staying with me far longer than most books do when I've finished them. I first read Elidor when I was 14 years old, and that book made such an impression that I still remember it 35 years later. I probably won't be around in another 35 years, but Strandloper will stay with me until then. This book is a treasure.

As other reviewers have stated, this book requires, nay, demands your full attention, but once you have passed through the first pages and get caught in the rhythm, you will find this book very difficult to put down.

              4 out of 5 stars Buckley's Chance or None.......2007-01-02

This is as brave an attempt as Garner has made to effect voices from other eras. It's achieved with consistently brilliant time and place shifts, and one can't conclude other than, in choosing the Buckley legend, his many years of mining in this direction has hit paydirt. Particularly powerful is the sense of Buckley's rural upbringing, which assists his passage into indigineous understandings of the world, and the mental state he confronts when re-entering 'civilisation'. In potent brief passages, Garner breaths life into the attitudes of the peoples and the times. No endistanced historical voice to mediate. Having read reasonably widely around the indigenous literature of Australia, I'd rate his evocation of indigenous society poignant and free from anthropology, romanticism and paternalism. The entire, slim book reads more like a poem than a novella. Which leads me to recommend Barry Hill's long poem on Buckley,'Ghosting William Buckley' which was justly well received in Australia.

5 out of 5 stars A remarkable novel, but not for all readers ..........2006-12-08

I loved this book, like most of the other reviewers here. And I'll leave it to their reviews to try to convey the nature of the novel in a nutshell, so much as that is possible. It is remarkable, and difficult, and it doesn't do the reader any favors -- exposition? bah! -- but if you take the time to work at penetrating this seemingly impenetrable novel, the rewards are well worth that effort.

HOWEVER, the simple truth of the matter is this: Strandloper is not for everybody. If you are looking for straightforward fantasy, this isn't it. If you're looking for "another Alan Garner novel", this isn't it (of course, I'm oversimplifying here -- but I mean that this novel is very little like his others). One reviewer likened Strandloper more to Faulkner than to Tolkien, and that is spot-on (at least on the surface -- in reality, Garner's deep, almost baptismal immersion into mythology here is very much in keeping with Tolkien).

If you find getting through Faulkner a bit difficult, then Strandloper is going to make you want to check into an asylum -- or chuck the book into the fire. Reading it is not a passive act, the way reading most novels usually is; you have to take an active part in working to unravel its abstruse layers of narrative and meaning, and if that doesn't sound like much fun to you, then put down Strandloper and try something else -- perhaps O'Brian's Master and Commander.

              3 out of 5 stars Difficult read.......2003-09-28

A book you know merits better understanding, if only it could be understood. Garner's language is very choppy and difficult to follow, but the catch-22 of the situation is that it must be in order for the story to come alive. After a few reads you become accustomed to the writing and can focus more on the thematic value.

3 out of 5 stars Average "Deep" Work.......2003-01-11

One reviewer has described Garner's writing as sparse but that's being too kind. Garner often leaves too much to our interpretation, going pages with dialogue only and barely telling you who's speaking. More exposition would've been appreciated in this work based on a fascinating legend.

                            Book Description

These cupcakes—from the owner of the Cupcake Caboose Company—are the yummiest and best looking ever! They come in sweet chocolate or creamy vanilla, dyed and decorated with dazzling designs. Best of all, every kid can make one. Ambitious little bakers will enlist a parent’s help and start from scratch, using the well-illustrated recipes for both cupcakes and frosting. Or they might want to get creative with store-bought pastries, mixes, and packaged icings. Either way, becoming a “cupcake artist” is easy, especially with the handy “cupcake key” to explain which are simplest and which need a little more practice. It’s delicious fun!

Not the most sophisticated of cupcake books but very cute for kids. Lots of fun ideas that are easier than decorating with frosting. They use a lot of candy pieces to make bunnies and butterflies. Very cute and fun though and it has a few handy recipes for cupcakes and frostings at the beginning of the book.

This book has a lot of nifty and cute cupcake ideas....but I think it is mainly meant for kids or beginners. It's nice if you want to make fast and easy cupcakes. If you are looking for more intricate cupcakes, or elaborate recipes, don't buy this book.

I'm from Australia and we dont get the range of books that appear here on Amazon. I read the reviews to help me purchase items, but I think I just got very excited with my order and shouldnt have purchased this item. I already have several cupcake books. As other reviews have stated this book is great for a kids' cookbook. I was looking for a cupcake book to inspire me - different designs, new things. I think I will shelve this book for when my baby gets a little older. If you are cupcake afficionado looking for more inspiration for yourself, I suggest you skip this purchase, but if you have a child and you'd like to cook together, then this is the book for you.

Wonder when trans-fats became healthy - there's so much margerine called for in this book you'd have to buy half a case! Sure, you can substitute butter, but fat is fat is fat. On a possitive note, the recipes come out well using reduced fat peanut butter - also used butter in half the amount with some success. Not thrilled with this book.

I am the Mom of a very picky eater & I am purchasing this book from Amazon after trying it out from the library.
I think it has a lot of great ideas & also catchy names for the foods, which really baits the kids into trying something new!

This book contains way too many recipes with high fat items. It also doesn't contain the nutritional info for the finished items, which makes it useless to me. If you're thinking "healthy" means moderate to low fat/calorie, then this isn't the book for you!

2 out of 5 stars Should be called peanut butter snack book!.......2002-01-10

I was hoping to find some help in the snack dept, as I have a limited variety of ideas for my partially food-allergic kid. He is allergic to a few items -- one happens to be peanuts, the other egg whites, but that's it. And unfortunately, 80% of the recipes in this book include peanut butter, nuts, or eggs! Nothing more original. I expected some of this knowing kids love PB, but most of the recipes are inclusive of one of the 2 allergens my son has, so this book was a huge disappointment.

If you're child is allergy-free, this book is for you. Nevertheless, it's still peanut-butter heavy. Given the incidence of kids with allergies in today's world, it would be great if more cookbook authors gave a section/chapter of their work to allergy-free recipes for kids.

I purchased this book and I think it's a great book. We as adults have come to realize we need to start eating better, for better health. And we often forget the same thing should apply to our children, After all they are our future and unhealthy children do not have a very bright future in store. I also know that Valerie Saxion is a Christian woman and uses biblical terms throughout this book which I think is great also. So for any one who has a problem with that, they should not purchase this book, but on the other hand if you love your children and want the best health for them whether you are Christlike or not you need to get this book and maybe then you will understand that as you love your children and want them to be well, God loves his children and wants them to be well also. Hooray for you Dr. Valerie Saxion

this cookbook cloaks its religosity under the guise of healthy eating, and is full of comments on god's way. additionally, it gives "recipes" such as the one for "quick vegetarian chili," the ingredients for which are: "1 can vegetarian chili" -- PATHETIC! i was insulted by this book, which told me nothing i didn't already know about nutrition, didn't have any good recipes, and was evangelical. an honest and proud author would advertize her wares more transparently, and say that she has found health through god, allowing readers and potential patrons to buy into her beliefs or not. this book is inexpensive, but not even worth its price. if i not been on the road when the book arrived (and thereby missed the deadline to return it), i would have asked for my money back. now i'll just have to throw it out.

                              Book Description

What do sweet potatoes, avocados and brown rice have in common? They’re among the 25 “miracle” foods that have been shown to significantly improve children’s health. For example, oranges can ease the symptoms of asthma, carrots fight infections, and blueberries can help improve children’s memories. There are 50 delicious recipes and dozens of great tips for adding healthy foods to even the finickiest kid’s diet. Included among the many charts and tables are breakdowns of the types and quantities of vitamins, minerals, and “supernutrients” that children need at each stage of their development, along with the foods that contain this vital nutrition, and creative meal plans tailored for each of the various age groups.

5 out of 5 stars Good and healthy!.......2001-09-27

Sherry Loller is my wife. This cookbook was written for our children, back in the '70's when few had ever heard of "health food." Sherry modified her recipes so Hanley and Travis could create their own meals when they were barely old enough to reach the table. Not only were the recipes healthful--they tasted great!

In fact, I often use the cookbook when I want to put something easy and tasty on the table. There's nothing "childish" about the taste or appropriateness of the recipes for adults either.

Our kids are grown now and their robust good health and cooking abilities attest to the sound basis for a lifetime of healthy living they got from Sherry and her cookbook.

If you are a parent and you'd like to guide your children early on toward an appreciation for the really good taste of healthful food--then the Super Food Cookbook for Kids is for you.
