Is it right to kill Satan's hit man? Would it help God's work? This installment in the Left Behind series picks up with Rayford Steele--"believer" and international fugitive--as he struggles with a plan to assassinate Antichrist Nicolae Carpathia. Meanwhile, Carpathia has been busy rebuilding roads, airports, and a cellular/solar satellite phone system--all designed to help him become supreme ruler of the world--and even claim himself to be God. We also find ace reporter Buck Williams anonymously preaching to the masses of believers and converts through his cyberspace magazine The Truth. All the believers in the safe house, including Buck, Doc, Chloe, and Tsion, are suspicious of Hattie--former mistress of Carpathia--who claims to be a believer but may have already compromised their secret location when she tried to buy her way to Europe months before.
Fans of the series won't be disappointed. Jenkins's signature writing is at full force. Readers can count on a suspenseful plot, imaginative futuristic thinking, and familiar characters, all of which appear in the opening pages and are sustained until the last cliffhanger scene when God unleashes another earth-shattering disaster.

2,5 stars. Better than the rest so far. .......2007-09-27
With the exception of the first book, I've given the Left Behind sequels 1 star, mostly because of the extremely slow pace, where it feels like they took a few chapters and stretched them out to make a whole novel. The other problem is that they are preachy.
Well, "Assassnis" was certainly a step in the right direction. The was some action in the book, not (as in "Apollyon") only 200 pages into the book. "Assassins" was also not as preachy as for example "Soul Harvest".
So it's definitely an improvement. There are still problems though. There's still too much filler material and the book could have been about 50 pages shorter (but that's an imporvement from the other books, which should have been about 250 pages shorter). And the story is moving to slowly. I can't understand why they need to stretch it out into so many volumes.
2.5/5
I should know better.......2007-01-23
I should know better than to write another review for the left behind series. I've taken a real killing in the votes. But, I can help it. I'm enjoying the series. I'm neither a huge critic or supporter of the series. I stayed away from the series for years but now I enjoy it. I don't agree with all of the theology but I am in general agreement.
This book like all the others have been fun fast reads. It isn't great fiction but it is a fun read. If you are looking for indeapth character this series will also bother you. It took several book for me to really empathize with the characters and now that they are going into the second half of the tribulation I still find that the character development is a bit stiff and unconvincing.
There was also poor dialog at several points in this particular book with entire conversations seeming very awkward. One stylistic issue that continues to bother me is long discussion where the dialog goes unattributed. This isn't always a problem but there are times during longer and more complicated conversations when the reader loses tract of who said what.
But, over all this book like the ones before it is a fun read and I recomemnd it for light reading.
Assassins: Assignment: Jerusalem, Target: Antichrist Left Behind #6.......2007-01-04
This is another great book by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins. I would recommend you keep reading if you haven't read it already, and if you have add it to your collection.
Sadism Unleashed.......2006-12-13
Just as I finished the painful task I've given myself of reading this "popular" fictionalization of the End of Time, I saw an article in the news about a video game version of Left Behind, aimed at the market of teenage boys and young men, indoctrinating them in violence and giving them the false notion that their God would condone their taking judgement into their own hands. Do any of the readers of these books recall Jesus's denunciation of the self-righteous Sadducees in the Temple?
Great Book in the Series.......2006-11-12
I feel that all of these books in the series live up to the hpe, and each has continued to become better than the one before it. I have read all 12, and I would recommend the series to anyone.

Completely Awful.......2007-09-05
I was fully prepared to enjoy this book based on the raves the most of the "reviewers" gave it. I kept waiting for the enjoyment to start, but finally gave up 2/3rds of the way through. I found the book so dull, boring, shallow and non-entertaining that I do not feel I can trust what others write. It is obvious that the author spent about 4 days writing it. It was not worth the $6.99 price.
Try something by Judith McNaught Something Wonderful or Kathleen Woodiwiss The Wolf and the Dove instead.
tawdry .......2007-08-29
I was expecting a regency romance (more romance than sex & better vocabulary than other romance genres), and instead I got a low brow historical romance. Even though it wove some history into the plot it didn't feel like it was set in that period. It was missing all the elegance I look for in a regency romance. Regency romances have long been a guilty pleasure of mine this one is down right embarrassing. It is far too cheesy sleazy.
Rich story lines, characters with depth, hot passion - an entertaining read!.......2007-08-13
This novel revolves around the lead character Lady Amelia, a graduate of Mrs. Harris' School for Heiresses and sets place during the year 1818 during the London "Season". The rough American Marine Major Lucas Winter catches her eye and the story goes from there. Without retelling the plot; I enjoyed the book thoroughly, it kept me reading well into the night. There is just so much going on in this story: the restrained relationship of Amelia & Lucas, Lucas' secret investigation of Amelia's step-mother, the coorespondance of Mrs. Harris to her cousin Michael, Lucas' painful & tramatic war memories and family history, and more. While a simple boy meets girl, they fall in love, etc. story can be a little romantic-yet boring-the author adds all these unique characteristics and situations that even without the romance would make a great story. But of course the romance and STEAM are the icing on this cake. And the fun wit and banter adds that little spark of humor. While I think the "darlin'" nickname Lucas called Amelia was a little distracting - I coudn't quite place an American accent using that word unless maybe a Southenern or a Cowboy - or maybe Boston but I guess that would be "dah-lin'". It was a real exciting and entertaining novel! Can't wait to read the rest of the series!
Reading for pleasure at its finest.......2007-07-04
If one were to sum up all the Regency romance titles that have been published, the number of rakehell dukes and barons that populate those books would probably exceed the actual total population of England at that time. Thus, it is rare to find works that show any originality or creativeness. The thing I really admire about what the author has accomplished with this series is that she has somehow taken the old threadbare plotlines and the cliche battles of will and turned those staid elements into a reading experience that feels truly fresh and original. I picked up this book after having read Beware a Scot's Revenge (School for Heiresses) and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was somewhat concerned that this book would just feel like more of the same (which, though not always a bad thing, is how I feel about romance series by most authors I've read). I was, however, pleasantly surprised. Though you could say that this book follows the other closely in formula, the author has a real gift for creating unique and individual characters that you could never mistake for those from another book of hers. Ms. Jeffries also has a talent for intelligent and well-constructed plotlines. Very often, I feel very frustrated by the plotlines of pulp romance novels because there are almost always plotholes the size of Kansas, or plot-points that feel almost painfully contrived. Not so with these School for Heiresses books; the plot progression extends almost seamlessly out of the characters themselves -- nothing ever feels contrived for the sake of having a plot, all the twists and turns arise out of an organic interaction of the characters, who themselves are intelligent and rational people (which, sadly, cannot be said for the majority of the novels I've read).
Now, having built her narratives around a solid framework of plot and character development, Ms. Jeffries also entertains us with unparalleled wit and humor. Many romance authors tell us their heros are dashed clever devils and their heroines have sparkling wit, but fail to convince us due to a lack of any real wit. But the characters in Ms. Jeffries books are actually so clever and charming that you will not only come to take a real interest in their adventures, but you will actually laugh out loud at their verbal and intellectual sparring. Many Regency romance authors try to emulate the wit and prose of the sainted Austen, but Ms. Jeffries is the only one I've read so far that even comes close to being able to hold a candle to the much revered lady.
As for historical accuracy, the author includes a note at the end of each book that briefly summarizes the basis of the plot from her historical research. So one can assume that Ms. Jeffries isn't taking particular liberties with history to set the stage for her characters. Some of her love scenes, though, could have a more contemporary feel, due to some of the euphemisms she uses (though other authors' repeated use of the word "manhood" could get equally tiresome, if not more so). Also, her heroines seem to posses a surprising degree of sexual inventiveness given their lack of experience, but then again, the whole point is that they _aren't_ your average 19th-century English miss. Sex wasn't invented 10 years ago, and neither was human creativity, so there really is no good reason to say, "That scene wasn't historically accurate because people didn't do things like that back then," because I'm sure somebody at that point in time had thought of it ;)
Anyway, the bottom line is, anyone who enjoys light reading (not just historical romance) should pick up this book (and the rest in the series), because it is truly one of the most enjoyable reads I've had in a long time. It is a great introduction to the work of Ms. Jeffries. I will definitely be picking up the other books in the School for Heiresses series.
P.S. I've also gone back to the Royal Brotherhood series by Ms. Jeffries, but I'm sorry to say they aren't quite as good as this series; though you may want to read them (at least To Pleasure a Prince (Royal Brotherhood)) to get the full background for Only a Duke Will Do (The School for Heiresses), which is Book 2 in the School for Heiresses series.
Delightful!.......2007-06-28
1800's England
NEVER SEDUCE A SCOUNDREL is the beginning of a delightful series! The next book in The School for Heiresses series is ONLY A DUKE WILL DO, which is linked to Sabrina Jeffries ROYAL BROTHERHOOD SERIES, followed by the wonderful THE SCHOOL FOR HEIRESSES, and then BEWARE A SCOT'S REVENGE with more books in the series promised to be published!
Very enjoyable!

Chapter 1 is superb!.......2005-02-07
I bought this book because of scanning through chapter 1. This is my usual method for deciding if a particular book might likely be something I would enjoy. This time, however, my method failed me. Chapter 1 was superb. The subsequent chapters were just *okay.*
Chapter 1 introduces Cymel, an 8-year old who lives on a farm with her dad. Her experience of the sights, smells, & activities on that farm are so vivid that I felt like I was there. I immediately liked Cymel and her dad, & was eager to follow the fascinating plot threads that were introduced in her chapter.
Sadly, however, the chapter ended & the book started introducing new characters, new locales, & new plot lines, etc etc, in rapid fire fashion. I soon got rather confused. Worse yet, Cymel seemed to have been relegated to a minor role, & I neither liked nor disliked any of the several new characters sufficiently to get me past the sixth chapter.
Too many wizards spoil the broth.......2002-08-17
In "Drum Warning," Book One of "The Drums of Chaos," an apprentice wizard doesn't earn his diploma until he kills his teacher, tans the old mage's hide and fashions a drum out of it. One would expect this custom to lead to a dearth of wizards on the two magically merging planets of Glandair and Iomard, but just the opposite is true. There are wizards who walk between worlds, wizards who cast death spells, wizards who do nothing but scribe, and yet more wizards who exercise what fantasy readers might consider the whole magical repertoire. Adding to the confusion, "Drum Warning" is told from multiple points-of-view---not just wizards, but the occasional swamp witch and minor bureaucrat. I finally had to sort the characters out by function:
There are three bad wizards who are murdering all would-be students on their way to a school of magery (in which the teachers don't end up as drum-heads). There are two teen-agers, a boy and a girl, who refuse to admit to their magical potential until the bad wizards attempt to kidnap the girl, sink a couple of ships out from under the boy, then try to drop a mountain on him when he refuses to drown. There is a bandit-wizard, on the run from a troop of female warriors who want to geld him. He seduces an alcoholic wizard, who--
A plot does somehow stay afloat in this confusion of magic. One of the young mages is destined to become the Hero who saves the merging planets of Glandair and Iomard (I don't quite understand the astronomy here) from chaos. There had been a collision seven hundred years past, when everything went to chaos. Libraries burned. Empires crumbled. Network T.V. ratings declined.
Can a young Hero save Glandair and Iomard from another time of chaos and bad programming? We're not even positive who will assume the role of Hero, although my money is on the twice-drowned boy. Nevertheless lots of interesting stuff takes place in "Drum Warning" while we wait for the Hero to appear. Little Gods torment cats, sour milk, and trash vegetable gardens. Big Gods make an occasional appearance and precipitate weird happenings (rather in the style of British royalty). An emperor is seduced by the Dark Side. An army marches into the realm of the swamp witch. Ships sink. A wizard is turned into a drum.
All of this makes good reading for a rainy day, if you can keep track of who is telling the story.
Not unreadable, but disappointing.......2000-09-06
This confused, unwieldy fantasy novel is one of the last written by Ms. Clayton, and unfortunately is far from her best work. It's the story of two worlds drawing closer and closer together until the boundary between them dissipates and characters can talk, or even travel, between one and the next. This is an original conception. Drum Warning also uses ritual magic in fresh, well-described ways. However, it is a severely flawed novel. There are too many characters and too many ill-defined subplots -- and most of the characters are young adults, a common fantasy novel device that I'm thoroughly sick of. Also, Clayton does something annoying to me, which is to use Welsh language and poetic forms for some of the names and poetry of one of her worlds -- without basing the culture on medieval (or any other period) Welsh culture in any way, and in many cases with the names and words being meaningless. I would have preferred her to have invented her own culture and language rather than "borrowing" something from Earth. I also disliked the pointlessly cruel death of the young girl's pets, which is depressing without advancing the plot. This book isn't unreadable -- there's certainly worse fantasy out there -- but I don't really recommend it.
