Murder in the 7th century.......2006-08-22
The author Peter Tremayne obviously has a great knowledge of Ireland in the 7th century and also on Irish Law. His Sister Fidelma books are attracting what can only be described as a cult following, but they are of interest to anyone who likes historical novels or mysteries. This series of books are set in Ireland in the 7th century, a time when there was total equality for women. The lead character is the beguiling Sister Fidelma. She is a brilliant scholar, a leading authority on Irish law and the sister of a king.
Sister Fidelma is attending an ecclesiastical conclave at Whitby in the year 664. While she is there a major proponent of the Celtic way of religion is murdered. Fidelma a fellow follower of the Celtic way is asked to investigate. She is paired with the ideological opposite, Brother Eadulf on the Roman side. Eadulf is shrewd well educated and smitten with the sister.
In an age before celibacy had become a part of religious life, intellectual and physical sparks fly between the two clerics and when two monks are also killed the plot thickens . . .
Surprising.......2006-06-28
Tremayne takes us to a world seldom visited, replete with Latin Mass, religious orders that aren't what they seem, and a highly educated nun who finds herself involved in these mysteries. Of course, like all mysteries, the answer is not what you first imagine it might be.
As previous reviewers have indicated, if you don't know anything about Ireland or the Catholic Church or Latin, having reference books handy might be good; nevertheless, you're in for an unusual story.
Mystery steeped in history, theology and culture.......2004-03-18
I am fascinated by the history of ancient Ireland, so I eagerly dove into this book. Peter Tremayne does an excellent job of showing how the culture and religion of that tiny island greatly influenced the Angles, Saxons and Picts living in present-day England and Scotland. He also shows how the Church, even in its early history, was a political as well as a spiritual force.
I had read some of the short stories featuring Sister Fidelma before picking up this book. Fidelma can be exasperating; she is haughty, touchy and quick to anger. Her starring role in a novel-length adventure allowed Tremayne to show the reader her more appealing qualities: a zest for life, a sly sense of humor, a deep commitment to her friends and a formidable intellect.
As the plot thickened, it seemed Tremayne might lose control of his large cast of characters, but the mounting excitement left me barely able to put the book down. Tremayne wrapped things up nicely in a scene that cleverly resembles an Agatha-Christie drawing-room denouement. The epilogue hints at more adventures to come for Fidelma and Brother Eadulf.
Fidelma is a Delight !.......2004-03-15
If you haven't met Sister Fidelna, Brehon, yet - then you've been missing out. I love a good murder mystery and I love a good historical novel and I get them both in Fidelma. This is the first novel in the excellent series from the noted Celtic scholar and once you've read the first you will be addicted.
Fidelma herself is a delight and the facinating glimpses into seventh-century Ireland make me eager for more. Don't miss out any longer
History is good, mystery is mediocre...........2003-10-19
I purchased this book via "used" selection. I am an Anglo junkie including reading history of early Brits, i.e. Celts. If you enjoy the history of this period (7th Century, after Arthur -- Anglo-Saxons in charge) and also like a little mystery, you might like ABSOLUTION BY MURDER. The plot hangs together well, although the identity of the perpetrator was obvious to me from the gitgo. The characters, including Fidelma, are not well developed, but perhaps the reader will learn more as she goes along. I did not find Sister Fidelma nearly as interesting as Cadfael, let alone Miss Marple.
I found this story comparable to those by Candace Robb who writes the Owen Archer series, although the APOTHECARY ROSE was much better. If you like Archer, you will probably like Fidelma.

The action packed conclusion to the CRIMSON series.......2006-08-05
Years ago, Cydney Brighton was the soul survivor of a top secret team trying to open a portal between two dimensions. It was at that point in time she caught the eye of a demon and only because of this her life was spared. Years later, Cyd is working for B-Ops dealing with vampires and were-wolves. However one night peace is broken and hell seems to have come to the surface. In actuality, demons have invaded Los Angels, (renamed Crimson City) and one night while on the job, Cyd is sucked into Orcus (see CRIMSON CITY - book one also by Liz Maverick).
Fighting her way out of Orcus, Cyd is no longer "just human". Forcibly joined with Griff-Vai, the demon who's eye she had caught, Cyd manages to only escape because a portal appears in front of her and somehow she is able to grab the amulet used to make the portal appear (the very end of SEDUCED BY CRIMSON by Jade Lee). Now she is back in Crimson City and so many things have changed that Cyd doesn't really fit in: not with her former B-Ops associates, the government that wants her to restart the demon program and not even with her old associates in the underground.
Trying to find somewhere to fit in, Cyd starts working with Finn a man who quickly becomes the only person she feels safe with and can trust. Only, Finn, as an escaped Mech unit, has his own secrets. As Crimson City falls apart around them, and Griff hot on Cyds' trail, they can count only on one another to try and stay alive.
Liz Maverick certainly made me one happy reader simply by writing Cydneys story. With everything that is taking place between the vampires, demons, were-wolves and now adding the Mechs into the series, this is a story I really wanted to read.
However there is too much happening and unfortunately, I feel the story is incomplete, especially as the last book in the series. Key parts seemed rushed, and there are quite a few loose ends that I would have liked resolved. Many of my "loose ends" come from several characters (Bridget & Jillian to name two) that have had bit parts throughout the series but are suddenly secondary characters and there is too much happening in their lives. Honestly, I don't see Cydney and Finn having their "happy ever after" ...at least not quite yet.
I wasn't lost with the chain of events transpiring in CRIMSON ROGUE as Liz is a fantastic story teller. If you haven't read any of the books in this series however, you will not want to start with this one as there is to much information that will prove overwhelming to an unsuspecting reader.
Cydney really caught my eye as a messed up "side-kick" in the first book and she really proved herself a strong and capable woman with her own story. I also really appreciated the fact that as you learn more about her, its not like she suddenly morphs into someone she isn't; she still has to deal with many of the issued brought up when you are first introduced to her.
I was really able to empathize with Finn as a hero and I have to admit I wasn't disappointed with how things ended for him as a hero. However, I would have liked a confrontation with him and Fleur of the Vampires. I also have so many unanswered questions regarding him I don't really know what to say!
I must admit that I really enjoyed the story and overall feel that ROGUE has the possibility of being an excellent conclusion to the series. However, overall, I really needed more and I really think there needs to be another story. Even though I don't feel my review is very favorable, I was glued to this book until I finished, and the action is non-stop.
The ending.......2006-06-22
It's weird, but many of those hanging strings that Maverick created with the first book I had all but forgotten about until I got to this one. I suppose that is why she wrote the first and the last book in this series. If you read any other books in this series you'll find they are stand alones. They might hint at other characters or situations in other books, but really you don't need to know what happened to get by.
In this one your brought back to Cydney Brighton, aka Cyd from book one. She was the junky partner of the cop who fell in love with a vampire. Near the end of book one (Crimson City) she disappears. They only find blood all over the place, but no body parts. Well, apparently she was kidnapped by a demon and turned into his love slave. I know, weird, huh? This guy had been keeping his eye on her since her part in the experiments she and her team conducted years ago had been waiting until she reached her lowest point to break through and snatch her. Well, she escaped when the veil began to close by grabbing a hold of the necklace (I believe that part is found in Seduced by Crimson) and running for her dear life. Anyway, Cyd meets up with another runner from book one--the cyborg. He names himself Finn. They hook up, sparks fly, and the world changes forever--literally.
Read on to find out more. Happy reading!
captivating.......2006-06-13
I am held captive and can not put these books down, a collection that I can get lost in. Love them.
Conclusion?.......2006-05-17
If this is the last book set in Crimson City I will be very disappointed. It just cannot end now. Liz Maverick told really good first and last stories. She also started one (Marcus and Jill) that was not finished. If an email to the publisher is what is needed, then I am doing just that. The setting of the series is just too good to stop the books. Perhaps the "conclusion" of the series was just talking about the demon gate. I would love to see another series based in Crimson City with some of the previous characters appearing.
It was appropriate that this book featured Cydney who was in the first. Finn and she discover their humanity together and will appreciate each other because of it. Humanity in this series is a very loose term however.
Wasn't this supposed to be the last book?.......2006-05-09
Crimson Rogue is a very well written book, with a fascinating story, good action, and compelling characters that share a beautiful romance. As the purported last book of the Crimson City series, it does well to tie up most of the story lines from previous books and close a chapter on the species infighting. However, I had a huge problem with the fact that the romance between the secondary characters, Jill and Marius, remained completely unresolved and open-ended. Not only that, but the entire epilogue is like one big premonition of the disquiet soon to hit Crimson City again with a warning about the rogues. If you are reading this book thinking it will end the series, think again.
The lose ends that remain, purposely it seems on Ms. Maverick's part, just beg the reader to walk away unsatisifed and looking for a sequel (although one is yet to be announced in any way). If you're the type of person who can be happy with a finished story line for the main characters, and ignore lingering conflict between secondary characters, then I highly recommend this book. However, I strongly caution anyone like me, who will feel annoyed and manipulated into buying a 7th book whose story line and publish date remain a complete mystery.

Customer Reviews:
Entertaining Read!.......2007-08-17
I found this Rogue's book to be just as entertaining as the other 3 books. Whether or not Tazi should not be a rogue is irrelevent, I liked it . I hope there will be more Rogues books in this series.
Blew it at the finish.......2007-08-11
Author Voronica Whitney-Robinson follows up her book "Sands of the Soul" (which is not required to read this book) with another tale featuring Thazienne Uskevren, a thief/rogue who comes from a wealthy family but is extremely tomboyish (but, of course, she's still drop-dead gorgeous) and has a history of minor rebellion from her parents. I thought that her previous effort, "Sands of the Soul," was below-average (in writing and plot), but I was hoping "The Crimson Gold" would redeem that previous debacle with a more solid effort. For much of the book, it did.
The storyline has our heroine traveling to the ruthless lands of Thay, ruled by the power hungry Red Wizards. At first, we don't know why she's there, and really don't discover the reason until the 2nd half of the book. Nevertheless, except for the last 50 pages, I enjoyed the trials Thazienne was forced to overcome and the build-up for what should have been a great ending. There was lots of Red Wizard intrigue to chew on, and I was very interested to see how it would all turn out. And then, it happened. Everything just fell apart at the end, and story not only lost momentum, but became entirely laughable and just plain ridiculous. It was awful, really. I won't give spoilers, as that's not fair to potential readers, but it was a real shame how much potential the plot had built for itself, only to be utterly destroyed.
"The Crimson Gold" is a standalone book. Although there's room for a following novel, the tale ends right here. Don't come into this one expecting to be fulfilled. The buildup was very good, but to say it fizzled would be an understatement . . . I think "imploded" is a better word. Sadly (or not, depending on your opinion), this will likely be the last novel about Thazienne, as Ms. Whiteney-Robinson is no longer an active writer.
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's Thazienne Uskreven!.......2007-01-25
I usually start my reviews with positive comments, followed by negative ones. This time, I'm going to do it other way around.
This book is all wrong.
The lead character is so perfect, to the point of being terribly annoying. She is so smart, athletic, witty, pretty, sexy, strategically brilliant, lucky, emotionally stable and fearless that Superman himself would be ashamed. I can't give way examples of mentioned traits without giving away spoilers, but trust me I'm not being cynic or spiteful, but merely realistic. The villains (the whole bunch of Thay's zulkirs and other Red Wizards) are so simplified and outright stupid, that it is really insulting. They actually let themselves be ordered by slaves. Characters have no plausible motivations behind their actions, and contradict themselves page after page. This book disregards (a mild word) all the good work Wizards of the Coast developers have done in and around the land of Thay in the last few years. The villains have a tendency of explaining their scheming to their enemies, and all of the characters have a tendency to speak to themselves (or "to no one in particular" as the author likes to put it). The plot is choppy, but otherwise is not as bad as the rest of the elements in this book. There are a lot of logical errors in it, but that goes on the editor(s). I liked Whitney-Robinson's book in the Spider Queen series, and I really can't perceive the reason behind this novel's such poor quality. I have a feeling that this book was written with a lot of love for its main character and minimal effort otherwise.
Otherwise, I liked one of the supporting characters, Justikar, and that is probably the only thing I liked. It might have been different if I was under ten years of age. In fact, this book might be well suited for younger audience.
Besides Elminster Series (I know Greenwood has a lot of fans who won't agree with me on this one), and first three books of Avatar Series, probably the worst novel to come out of TSR/WotC publishing.
Not a Story of a Rogue.......2006-05-24
My biggest complaint about the book is that it does not belong in the series "The Rogues." I have read the other books in the series and enjoyed them. I find rogues the most interesting character because they acheive results through cunning. Magic users just nuke everything in sight, warriors seem to be able to absorb enough damage to bring down a T-rex, but rogues need to be clever. Well, forget about that in this book. The main character Tazi has about as much subtlty as King Kong. She seems to simply be a fighter, as far as I can tell. Give you an example, which may give away a little story. When she rushes to confront the "big bad" enemy at the end instead of trying to sneak up on him and backstab him (as any normal self respecting rogue would do given the chance) she calls out and challenges him to one-on-one combat. Which also results in a completely unbelieveable confrontation between Tazi and this opponent who is about ten times bigger and stronger than she, in which she very unbelieveably wins. A backstab might have been beleiveable (since we all know rogues can dispatch just about anything if they can sneak up on it) but her adoption of the might warrior persona was out of place in a book about rogues, and just not credible. I wanted to see more disarming traps, sneaking past guards, picking locks -- that is, thief-like behavior.
Some of the details about Thay were interesting but I got tired of the constant preaching about slavery. The author obviously dislikes slavery, but I think the reader got the message, the book took on a moralistic tone. Not to mention her depictions of conditions of some of the slaves were so unrealistic and exaggerated that it detracted from the book. I also did not find the characters compelling. The two "sides" in the book were both pretty worthless and evil, so the reader didn't care who won.
So if you are thinking of this series "The Rogues" read the other three books and skip this one.
Not bad, but not great either.......2005-08-15
It seems to me the reviews below had to look at minor things to find faults with this book. They need to look at what this book was meant to be. It was meant to be a continuation of the stand alone novels in the Rogue series set in the Forgotten Realms.
I think this book was entertaining for what it was meant to be. The author did a good job of telling the story. If you want to complain, you can say that nothing new, meaning things that haven't been done before, occured in this book. Yet, that doesn't really detract from the story.
It was well told and fun to read.
Product Description
New from FASA--a fiction series based on its most popular board game! CRIMSON SKY FICTION These novels, based on the exciting Microsoft computer game (scheduled for release in the third quarter of 2000) and FASA's popular board game, introduce the world of Crimson Skies. In the 1930s--of an alternative-history America--air militias from fragmented nation-states fight to protect themselves from pirates and other raiders. In this America, the planes are faster, the guns are bigger, and life is more exciting. The first series follows the transformation of Trevor "Rogue" Rheese from law-abiding security agent to pirate with a heart of gold.

Great book, but no follow up books.......2007-05-07
I played the computer game that these novels were partly based off, and I loved the world in which the game and book take place. I read it pretty fast, and although the end of this book has a section from the second, there was never a second book made in the series, this is the only downfall, otherwise the book is great.
Mack Maloney's "Wingman" series in the 1930s.......2000-12-16
Admittedly it requires familiarity with the board game series it's based on to make total sense--especially with all the airplanes mentioned in it--but it's a thoroughly enjoyable tale of dogfighting, greed, and vengeance over the skies of an alternate 1937 Seattle. The setting is evocative of Mack Maloney's "Wingman" series, but more from the point of view of the people who prefer and enjoy the balkanization of the USA rather than the people who want to restore it.

More fun that is allowed by law!.......2005-02-02
How do you follow a great book? You write an even BETTER book. I laughed and laughed until I think I cracked something. What a terrific read.
Tryhard predictable comedy.......2004-12-10
I read over half of this book, and that was really being a bit generous.
This may have got a `B' if I'd been 14 when I reviewed it. A comedy read with only two techniques: set up a standard fantasy scene/creature, and have the heroes make Hollywood teen/child-style smart-alec comments; or make self-referential comments like, "We can't be killed now - it's too early in the plot." Very hip? No, but it might be to someone who'd never heard it done before, or who'd never actually enjoyed bathetic dialogue and substantial characters simultaneously.
Every joke is spelt out clearly and laboured, such as a scene where someone observes that the two fighting knights might be shamming a bit. OK if he had've left it at a reply, "Shh, the people in this kingdom hate it if you suggest that," and trusted us to smirk quietly, but he had to go on to say, "Just like professional wrestling."
Thanks for clearing that up for us.
Unforgetable.......2001-03-28
The adventure continues in this marvelous novel about the unbeatable man with the unbeatable luck.
Dan McGrit have really out done himself with this hilarious story. It's gripping, its funny, its like nothing you have read before (except the first book)!
Write more books.......1998-07-14
I noticed that nobody has reviewed this book, so I decided to add my cent (I'm not quite bright enough to have TWO cents). Royal Chaos was a brilliantly funny book, and the entire Jason Cosmo series is the fantasy equivalent of The Hitchhiker (5 book) trilogy. I've read this book 3 times, and I still can't help but laugh at the imagery. I frequently had to be held back as I tried to push one hilarious passage after another under the nose of friend after friend. Sad to say, they never got used to those midnight calls. It was also very well-written, and I highly recommend it. Note: if you're looking for some serious fantasy, lighten up, it's FANTASY. Read this book. (Helpful hint to you students out there, english teachers do NOT appreciate book reports that begin with the words "Dan McGirt blows Charles Dickens out of the water with this one).

Book Description
In this volume, a number of international authorities describe the ways in which the notion of chaos occurs and can be applied in a variety of contexts. The articles are based on talks presented at the Royal Society meetings held early in 1987 and range from the mathematical (ergodic theory) through astronomy, physics, renormalization theory, and turbulence. These state-of-the-art surveys will make this volume essential for all those working in the theory and application of chaotic dynamics.

The leading scientists who gave these papers under the sponsorship of the Royal Society in early 1987 provide reviews of facets of the subject of chaos ranging from the practical aspects of mirror machines for fusion power to the pure mathematics of geodesics on surfaces of negative curvature. The papers deal with systems in which chaotic conditions arise from initial value problems with unique solutions, as opposed to those where chaos is produced by the introduction of noise from an external source. This book is wonderful for anyone considering detoxing. It is VERY practical, telling you how to maximize your cleansing results without depriving yourself. For example, when discussing these that should be reduced/cut out before starting a detox, smoking is mentioned. It lets you know that for the best results, smoking should cease, but if you are unable to handle this, it gives alternatives that gradually reduce the smoking and load on your body. There are a variety of plans: 30 day make over, 9 day intensive, weekend energizer, mono-diet, etc. Color pictures are included also. Also, focuses on detoxing your life. Ways to calm and replenish the spirit (like mediatation) and detoxing your home environment. The diet was easy to follow and has been a life style change to me. The book was infomative and helpful, and I am better for it
