Customer Reviews:
Too superficial for the better player.......2007-02-06
I regretably have to agree with an earlier reviewer who panned this book as being too basic to be really useful for the more advanced player. I figured that reviewer was looking for "shortcuts" to getting good, without the hard work of practicing the basics -- and I believe in the importance of working hard at mastering the basics. So I purchased the book. But, the problem is that the basics covered in this book are too basic -- like how to pick a racquet and the trajectory of a lob serve. Those are things the beginner needs to see, but the better player knows them in principle, but needs help in learning how to execute them better -- not the "what" of winning racquetball, but the "why" and the "how" so that the skills can be practiced and developed. It's not that there isn't good stuff in this book -- there is. It does a good job of treating the fundamentals, but that's where it stops. If you've already got a solid grasp of the fundamentals and are already playing at a reasonably advanced level, I would recommend the "Advanced Racquetball" DVD by Jim Winterton which demonstrates the mechanics and strategies that will allow better players to take their game up another notch. A word of warning -- Winterton's DVD is very good, but it is so loaded with specific coaching information that it can be hard to digest it all. Sometimes you just want to yell "explain that a little better before you move on!" But at least, when you've been exposed to Winteron's coaching comments you know what you're not doing right and need to work on, and because it is video rather than static pictures, you can play and replay the stroke mechanics being illustrated.
Not bad, could be much better.......2007-01-23
I would like to see stop action sequenced photos of the basic forehand and backhand strokes. There is no picture of a decent backhand stroke in the chapter entitled "Hitting Forehand and Backhand Shots" and only two instructional photos.
All instructional photos in the book are of Woody Clouse a LEFT-HANDED player. Why would you use photos that are appropriate for only 10% of the population?
The text presentation is quite good but the photos leave a lot to be desired.
Information that is Very Valuable.......2000-03-15
One has to apply the information that has been read from this book and use it on the racquetball court. The information is very direct, and their is no mystery to it. One of the authors who contributed information on this book [Woody Clouse] emphasizes that one has to practice hitting alot of balls on the court, lift weights, and run sprints in order to get better as a player-Male or Female. International Racquetball commissioner Hank Marcus along with Irt player Jon Ellis give this book a very positive evaluation. The book has many pictures illustrating situations where one has too be hitting the ball away from the player, etc. The book has several chapters that emphasize all the aspects of game-conditioning, nutrition. The book also has several pictures of players who play on the professional tour. Cliff Swain, Andy Roberts, Mike Ray, Drew Kachtik , and Ruben Gonzales are some of the player photographs one will see in this book. I have to say that my play was really very limited and highly primitive. I only knew how to serve the most basic serve in racquetball and that was the drive, and that was the only shot I knew since the beginning. I was very fortunate that when I was playing the game I purchased this book during the time to help improve my play. It has been a couple of months now, and my play is alot better. I can do a Z-serve, a left and right drive serve, and my lob is coming there. I also learned to hit the ball away from my opponent and not to hit the ball to him or her but away from my opponent. Alot of patience is needed, and alot of practicing if one desires to improve. So if your a racquetball player who is from Moscow, Russia, or Tijuana ,Mexico, or from Houston Texas who wants to be more knowledgeable playing the game, I highly recommend this book too you.
Not much solid information here........2000-02-22
I was disappointed by the lack of advanced instruction in this book. Winning Racquetball includes precious little information that an intermediate player wouldn't already know. It seems this book is mostly filler. I was expecting insight on advanced strategies and how to improve on fundamentals. Instead I found a lot of information on how I should eat and what I should wear.
Superb. This book taught me a lot about the game!.......1999-08-31
If you gotta have just one book to win in racquetball-- this is it! My friends (after being frustrated with my newfound techniques) were surprised about my transformation... from a novice player to a real good contender within a month. I plan to join tournaments soon and win. Thanks to this book.

What a flop.......2007-02-24
This guy appears to be pushing some fairly common stuff like family limited partnerships. I wasted my money buying his book. Nothing earthshattering or creative about his structures. They put "JD" after his name and not "Esq" does that mean he never passed the Bar exam? I found that by simply searching for asset protection on Google you can find a lot of law firm and other websites where you can learn about all these strategies for free.
I read this book and it was great!.......2005-04-21
I found this book very easy to understand and informative. I have attended estate planning seminars and other financial conferences, but came away overwhelmed and confused. Jay has a great personal story that really adds to his credibility. After I finished reading it, I immediately read it again. I know what to do and what not to do. I have changed the way I do business since I read this book.
The negative review by "Cool Cat" is obviously biased if you read all of his reviews. He only endorses one asset protection book and it's probably his own. My guess is that he never read any of these books and is eihter Jay Adkisson himself or one of his associates. Notice that his review doesn't focus on the book, but rather attacks Jay Mitton. This seems typical for most attorneys.
Fantastic Book .......2005-04-21
I have read hundred of books on finances and I would rate this book near the top as to its usefulness. I learned more about asset protection from reading this book than I have learned from the hundreds of hours I have spent with CPAs, attorneys and financial advisors over the years.
Pass.......2004-10-25
Among his estate planning peers, Jay Mitton is one of the least liked and most notorious attorneys because of his heavy marketing of arguably worthless pre-made kits for family limited partnerships. The low quality of these kits, combined with Mitton's less-than-truthful marketing, has generated some scathing comments on the American Bar Association's estate planning bulletin board. The Supreme Court of Florida in fact entered an order prohibiting him from marketing in that state. The guy is a great marketer, to be sure, but his products can be charitably described as substandard and if you buy his book you need to also buy a ton of salt to go with it.

Murder in LA.......2007-03-13
When Tucker finds a cop on her doorstep, she is surprised. She's even more surprised when she's told that Evan Brice, her ex-fiance, has been found stabbed to death. His wife, Cissy, Tucker's ex-best friend because Cissy married Evan out from under Tucker, is the prime suspect. She can't believe Cissy could do it so she sets out to "help" the police find the real killer. The fact that the police don't want help doesn't stop Tucker.
The fact that he'd been unfaithful and a drug addict provide more suspects for Tucker to check out. The homicide detective is not happy she's mucking around in his investigation. Joe Deegan, a detective who Tucker has had a romantic interest in, is also telling her to stop investigating. But Tucker can't stand by and let them arrest Cissy and leave Dara, Cizzy and Evan's young daughter, without a parent.
Can Tucker find the real killer without putting herself in danger? Can she put up with her mother, Pookie, and her boyfriend, Bruce, living with her, not to mention their dog Muldoon? Can she find a hunk of a date for her ex-husband's wedding?
This is the first book in this series that I've read. I really liked Tucker. I look forward to reading more in this series. The setting of LA for this series is great. Really adds to the ambiance of Hollywood to the story.
I highly recommend this book.
A likeable cozy.......2006-04-02
In this sequel to Patricia Smiley's False Profits self-employed management consultant Tucker Sinclair finds herself tracking down the murderer of an old flame, Hollywood agent Evan Brice. The problem is that Tucker's search for a killer may lead her to the door of old friend Cissy Brice, the victim's widow, who had ample reason to want to see the last of her unfaithful, drug-addicted spouse. While annoying the police with her amateur sleuthing, Tucker has to contend with memories of Cindy's perfidy ten years earlier--Cissy had an affair with Brice while he was engaged to Tucker--as well as a host of other annoyances--starlets with skeletons, malevolent bikers, her ex-husband's impending nuptials, and her mother's increasingly organic lifestyle.
Cover Your Assets is a likeable enough cozy, nicely written and sporting the occasional pleasing turn of phrase. ("I waited until she turned her back before using my hand to fan myself with the same urgency Icarus must have felt trying to get across the Aegean.") My worry, though, is that the book may not be different enough to stand out from the pack of other likeable-enough cozies, that there is nothing that distinguishes Tucker Sinclair as an unusually eccentric or otherwise compelling protagonist. Perhaps more can be done in future installments in the series with Tucker's day job, which barely figures in the storyline here. (But is management consulting a sexy or quirky enough field to add much spice?) Still, a good read that's worth your while if you're shopping for a breezy beach book.
Debra Hamel -- author of Trying Neaira: The True Story of a Courtesan's Scandalous Life in ancient Greece (Yale University Press, 2003)
Witty, clever, persistent, and just plain lucky at times .......2005-12-29
Tucker Sinclair has started her own management consulting business, Sinclair and Associates; though she has yet to make enough profit to hire an associate. Tucker inadvertently gets drawn into another murder case, one of her ex-fiancé, who happened to be unhappily married to her former best-friend Cissy Brice. Cissy awkwardly asks Tucker to help clean out Evan's apartment. Tucker cannot help but follow the leads she uncovers while visiting the neighborhood. When she is not on the case, Tucker has to deal with her unpredictable mother and her dog Muldoon. Joe Deegan is still interested in Tucker; perhaps she is ready to give him a chance? Skillful writing, an uncomplicated plot, and quirky characters make this book an enjoyable read.
A really good book.......2005-12-18
You know what makes Patricia Smiley's books so good? The situations which arise for Tucker are things that have happened to us, or that easily could.
Although I enjoy Eve Dallas and Jim Qwilleran and their millions to use wisely, I also enjoy a book that's a more everyday situation. Any one of us could marry a really rich person, or we could have some unknown relative leave us a bundle. But it's more likely we would run into an old flame, who wasn't doing so well in the current life. Patricia Smiley has a knack with this everyday thing, and it pulls you RIGHT INTO THE STORY, deep in, where there's just nowhere to go but forward.
I really enjoyed "False Profits" and "Cover Your Assets." Tucker is an interesting and totally believable character, and the people/pets who inhabit her world are the kind who would be your friends, too. I'm not sure you can give higher praise than that. (And perhaps, when you read Patricia Smiley's books, with the adventures of Tucker's way-out-there mother, you will appreciate your own mother a little more?)
What a Mystery!.......2005-11-23
Tucker Sinclair is back, trying to solve another mystery, after her college boyfriend is found murdered. All signs point to his wife, Cissy, the very woman who stole Evan away from Tucker. The truth was that Evan had his own apartment for "working." And Evan was into drugs and other women, many women. All are good reasons for a pissed off wife to kill her husband. But Tucker is sure that Cissy would not kill the man her daughter called father simply because Cissy and Tucker knew what life was like without fathers. Tucker is another suspect since Evan recently caught up with her. Evan also wrote a love poem about her.
So Tucker Sinclair decides to take action. Acting behind the backs of the police, she starts her own investigation. But trouble arises in her life as Tucker learns more information. She is hit over the head and gets in trouble with bikers. She also argues with Joe Deegan, a man who enters her life occasionally.
Cover Your Assets is a good book that will keep readers intrigued. Tucker's own stupidity will amaze readers as she keeps going after all her thoughts are wrong. She is determined to find the killer. Readers will definitely enjoy Smiley's second book about Tucker Sinclair.

Excellent.......2003-01-22
Cover Your Assets is well written and pulls together, in a concise manner, the key aspects of managing, securing, and deploying Internet applications. It provides both technical and non-technical guidance to operating applications in a secure environment. It explores technology and policy related issues, going so far as to provide specific checklists of responsibilities for all members of an organization who share responsibility for security. In addition, it makes specific security recommendations for configuration of key devices to limit their vulnerability to malicious activity. In short, the book is well done; a useful treatise for all security concious members of an organization.

I thought this book was a nice overview (from a higher level) for application developers on the process of application development.
I would ask for the authors to include more information on privacy because its such an area of concern.

I agree with Jack, though not quite as harshly. It's not very good and I would order something else or look at the NIST website.

Customer Reviews:
An exciting new hero.......2005-11-27
This book was a fascinating read. Souls separated from bodies and both kept in thrall. In a future that has little to commend it, Kurtz has created a woman who rises from what should be mind-numbing and in this case soul-destructive odds to become a hero. Sarah is tough, determined and stubborn. She has no way to learn to use the powers she is given except to use them so she uses them even though it is sometimes painful. What a gutsy woman!
I wanted to understand more of how the soul cages worked, until I realized that one doesn't explain magic. In the beginning, I expected the process to be more scientific, as I also expected the circles to be demonstrated to be the vestiges of transporter science. (They could be, but in this story, they need only stand as mysterious magic.)
as the climax unfolded. I had to keep turning the pages and read on into the early morning.
Elves, Dwarfs, Fairies-Need Not Apply. This Isn't Your Mama's Fantasy.......2005-11-26
The Soul Cages by Nicole Givens Kurtz is an experiment in fantasy that nixes the usual cast of characters so common in today's fantasy. So be warned. If you're seeking some Tolkien like fantasy, this isn't it.
Instead Givens Kurtz creates a world, Veloris that is ruled by ice and snowfall. There hidden amongst the weathered homes are a set of knights, Minister Knights of Souls, that are prophesied to be the protectors of all human souls. Yet, there are only three of them, and their reputation as well as their numbers have fallen into ruin.
On Solis, the evil and extremely profitable businessman, Valek, captures souls using an ancient and old magic, to which souls are extracted from bodies. He needs the souls to make into Solance, a mind-reading drug to which Valek is selling to both sides in the war of Earth 3012 and Saturn Four. Neither side knows that Valek is taking them to the bank and they're paying in him in not only silver, bloodshed.
Enter one brave woman, Sarah, and her sister Amana. Together, they escape Valek's soul cages--only to be ambushed just as they are about to leave the planet. Suddenly Sarah is saved by one of the Minister Knights, Marion, leader and prince of Veloris. Her siser, Amana is recaptured, to which Marion and Sarah will pay for later.
What unravels is a quest met with death, betrayal and destruction. A prophesy, a love for family, and jealousy all come out to play in this wonderful fantasy by Givens Kurtz.
With this novel, Givens Kurtz continues to explore human nature and once again, the characters are well rounded. I knew immediately who the bad guys were, however they had motivations, dramas, and of course, I disliked them. Still, nothing is clearcut with Givens Kurtz. And this novel proves no exception.
I kept turning pages long into the night and finished it within a day's time. Spellbound, I too felt as if I had been trapped in the Soul Cages.
The call of destiny.......2004-10-10
In a distant galaxy where travel is accomplished by moving through openings in the atmosphere, the world is in chaos. Planets are at war with each other and sorcery is used to keep the balance of power out of kilter. Glowing spheres prophesize the coming of a savior that will restore the balance of power and release the human souls that have been held prisioners in crystal orbs. Sounds unrealistic? Well, in THE SOUL CAGES, readers will find all these things and much more. The planets, Earth 3012 and Saturn Four, are at war. In the middle of these two warring factions is Valek, a denizen with a large holding on the Planet Solis. He has found a way to produce a substance called Solance, which can help one read minds and he is selling it to the highest bidder. It is a hot commodity for both, Earth 3012 and Saturn Four. They each believe that possession of this potion gives them the upper hand in war, but little do they know Valek is playing them both for big profits.
Valek uses slaves to produce the potion. Those that give him trouble have their souls drained from their bodies and placed in the soul cages. All the captured souls talk about a savior and the Minister Knights of Souls that will rescue them and give Valek his comeuppance for all his evil deeds. But sisters, Sara and Amana decide to escape rather than wait. Their plans are foiled with Amana being recaptured and Sarah whisked away to the planet Veloris by a mysterious knight. While on Veloris, she learns of her destiny in the order of the world. Will she accept the call?
Nicole Givens Kurtz has written an awesome tale of valor, love, greed and sibling rivalry around a brilliant story about good versus evil. She does a good job with a host of characters and lots of suspense and drama. She made each character in this saga seem very human although you are aware that they have some superhuman tendencies. Each page seems to be the start of a new adventure that surprisingly doesn't get lost in all the subplots as they come to a very exciting climax that left me flipping the pages looking for more. I can't help but feel that there is a sequel to this one. This is definitely one author I'm adding to my TBR list. (4.5 Rating)

Kurtz Takes a Turn to Fantasy and it is a RIGHT Turn!.......2004-08-03
The Soul Cages by Nicole Givens Kurtz is slightly different than her other work, Browne Candidate. This story is set on the ice planet of Veloris, where Sarah and her sister Amana have just been turned back into flesh where once they were souls.
On Solis, Valek, a business man of wealth, compresses souls into Solance, a mind reading serum that is currently being sold to both Earth 3012 and Saturn Four. These two planets are at war with one another, but Valek has found it profitable to sell Solance to both sides.
As Sarah escapes Valek's soul cages with the help of Marion, a Minister Knight of Souls, her sister is recaptured and taken back to the cages. Sarah's grief and gulit plague her throughout her stay on Marion's home planet of Veloris. But Marion's group of knights wants more from Sarah than a thank you. Their Antiqk Oracle has predicted a savior, and Marion believes it's Sarah.
All hell breaks loose when Amana mysteriously appears on Veloris. Her presence brings both joy and outright betrayl to Sarah and the Minister Knight of Souls.
There's a lot going on in this story in addition to a love triangle and magic. Will the two warring planets discover Valek's double crossing plan? Will Sarah rise to the Oracle's prophescy? Will Amana be saved from the Soul Cages?
This is a wonderful tale, full of adventure, swords, spheres and souls.
The Soul Cages.......2004-07-04
"Leaving his boots in the outer room, he strolled barefoot to his
inner chamber. Valek's feet fell silently on the stone floor due
to the floor's covering of human hair."
Are you wondering where Valek got so much human hair? Oh, that's
easy. When you take the soul from a body, it leaves behind a pile
of lifeless skin, hair and body. Most of the skin is thrown into
a garbage pit, except for what's used for making drums. Most of
the body is thrown in the pit as well, except for what henchman
MaxMion eats. The hair, meanwhile, is a very good floor covering.
This is not the first book I've reviewed by Nicole Givens Kurtz,
and it's always a pleasure to see her imagination at work. Valek
isn't some cardboard cutout of a villain. He's an intelligent
and worthy adversary for the Minister Knights of Souls.
This story revolves around Sarah, whom the Ministers rescued
from the soul cages. Her sister Amana was left behind. Sarah
escapes to another world, one filled with many fascinating
characters who have very high expectations of her.
To write in an established genre is a balancing act. One must
follow the formula while being original at the same time. Fail
on either of these two counts, and the reader is disappointed.
Nicole Givens Kurtz does not disappoint. She builds people and
she builds worlds, and she brings them both to life with
sparkling description that makes you feel you are in that
place.

Warning about this doctor.......2007-10-10
I just want to warn women: I had one office visit with this doctor. I hesitently went for a second and found myself
verbally attacked by his office manager/wife and treated disrespectfully by Townsend himself. Another friend who saw him left unimpressed because his focus was to sell products.
