Book Description

People magazine declared that "[Nora Roberts] is at the top of her game," and there's no greater evidence of that than these three novels. From the horse farms of Virginia to the rugged beauty of Montana to an island off the coast of Georgia, these novels showcase Nora Roberts's talents for intense drama, vivid characters, and fast-paced suspense.

5 out of 5 stars Love all of Nora's romance books.......2007-02-25

You can never go wrong with a Nora Roberts romance novel and this is just one more great one in the list.

3 out of 5 stars beware small type.......2007-01-15

i haven't finished reading even the first of these three books, but I am struggling to read the small, serifed type. I don't usually have any problems reading normal type, but something about the font and size of the type, combined with the large book is making this read a bit of a struggle for me.

So far, really like the characters and very typical Nora Roberts writing.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Reads.......2007-01-14

If you are an avid reader as I aa and a Nora Roberts fan too, you can't beat these three great books combined in one volume.
I am certain that you will enjoy these three earlier works by Nora Roberts.

Truly a great grouping of three story lines. Each one kept me on the edge of my seat and reluctant to put down until I completed it. Descriptions of location and events put you right there. I can't wait to read more of this author.

    5 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2004-12-02

This was one of the original books that got me into reading Piers Anthony. This is the compilation of Dragon's Gold, Serpent's Silver and Chimaera's Copper, the three books telling the tales of Kelvin of Rud. Using ancient technology, Kelvin of Rud travels between three worlds, fulfilling prophecies and saving kingdoms from tyrannical despots. There's a good mix of actual magic, and sparse space age technology, illustrating the adage that any technology, sufficiently advanced, appears to be magical. I'm not one for giving away plots too much, so I will simply state that these books are well written and provided me with a good read when I was a young teenager, and continue to do so now as an adult when I reread through them. A fine addition to any fantasy lovers collection.

    5 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD!.......2000-04-18

Wounderful books filled with excitement and Adventure. You Have to love it's exiting characters and Plot. The dragons are wounderful and amazing to read about!

5 out of 5 stars Three early novels from the glory years of Spenser for Hire.......2003-02-28

This collection brings together the fifth, sixth, and seventh Spenser for Hire novels by Robert B. Parker, representing the early glory days when our hero was trying to figure out how to make things work with Susan Silverman and Hawk was always around to help do the good deeds. The key thing is that Parker refuses to fit into a restrictive formula at this point and that his books are perfectly suited for those who spend time reading as a way of enduring the commuter lifestyle.

"The Judas Goat" (178) offers some twists on our hero as he travels to Europe and needs the assistance of Hawk to do his good deeds as we learn that apparently Spenser cannot do everything by himself. Spenser is hired by a millionaire industrialist who was crippled in the terrorist bomb blast in a London restaurant that killed his wife and daughter. Hugh Dixon will pay Spenser $2,500 for each of the nine members of the gang, dead or alive. Spenser's plan is to go to London and find himself a "Judas goat," someone in the gang he can turn to get at the others. Of course, since this is a Spenser novel the case proves to be a lot more complicate. This is one of the fastest paced novels in the series and features a most efficient Spenser, which seems a strange comment given all the waiting he does in this novel. On the personal front his relationship with Susan is progressing nicely (apply appropriate adage involving distance). The final twist that takes our hero to Montreal is a bit over the top, but if you remember events from the summer of 1972 it is not so far-fetched.

In "Looking for Rachel Wallace" our hero is hired to protect the title character, a radical lesbian feminist who has been receiving death threats because of her latest book "Tyranny," which is about people in high places who discriminate against gay women. To no one's surprise Rachel Wallace does not take well to Spenser's sense of humor, the way he dresses, his chosen avocation--okay, she does not like ANYTHING about him. But she needs protection and he can carry on an intelligent argument, so there is some level of respect. Everybody is worried or at least wondering what Spenser thinks about lesbians and radical feminists, and there are several feisty conversations along such lines between the pair, but the actual subject under examination in this book turns out to be Spenser himself, although most of the insights come from Susan Silverman instead of the Rachel Wallace. There is a point where Spenser explains if anything happens to him, Hawk should take up the case. Susan points out she does not know how to contact him and Spenser assures her that if anything happens Hawk will show up and ask if she needs anything. Susan talks about the implicit code that binds Spenser, Hawk, Quirk, Healy, etc., and I suddenly realize that Spenser has been NETWORKING! The first half of "Looking for Rachel Wallace" deals Spenser trying to do his job until he offends the writer's political sensibilities and is dismissed. As you can tell from the title, the second half of the novel brings changes the nature of the case and even though he is no longer employed to care, of course he takes responsibility for everything that has happened. The most unique part of this novel is that Spenser makes some serious mistakes (I even spotted a key clue way before he did), so he is not as on top of his game as usual. You especially know this is true when Spenser gets beaten up in a fight and apologizes several times for what he says. More than any other novel to this point in the series, "Looking for Rachel Wallace" gets to the heart of the character, understandably knocking him off stride to reveal the true nature of the man.

With "Early Autum" we again find a new twist in a new Spenser adventure. This time our hero is hired by Patti Giacomin to find her son Paul, kidnapped by his father. Spenser finds Paul almost immediately and it quickly becomes clear that neither parent really cares about the boy, who is just a pawn in the wake of an ugly divorce. Paul needs someone to teach him, well, just about everything (except how to shrug; the kid does that really well in response to literally every question asked by Spenser throughout the entire book). "Early Autumn," a metaphor for a 15-year old kid who has to grow up really fast, finds Spenser talking more than any of the previous books, although at the end his detective skills will again come into play. A large chunk of the book is Spenser and Paul talking about a whole bunch of different topics. In doing so, Spenser explains his view of the world, a task usually left to Susan Silverman. There is also an unforgettable twist as Hawk lends a hand at a key moment.

Can you beginning with "A New Collection of Three Complete Novels" and pick up the Spenser for Hire series from there? Certainly. But there is something to be said for going back and doing this series from the beginning. Early on the point is more the cases, but as the series progresses it becomes more about the relationships. Not just the major ones with Susan, Hawk, and Paul, but also those with the growing supporting cast, which includes Rachel Wallace.

The Prize-Winning Cult Classic and International Bestseller with Over 1 Million Copies Sold

Describing a world as amoral and fascinating as the landscapes of Less Than Zero and Trainspotting, this novel about a young woman living in the violent world of Japan's underground youth culture is both shocking and strangely beautiful.

Enchanted by the snakelike forked tongue of a stranger called Ama, nineteen- year-old Lui takes a walk on another side of life. Following Ama home the night she meets him, Lui straightaway moves in with him and begins making plans to have her own tongue pierced. Determined to push her boundaries further, she asks Ama's strange friend Shiba to design an exquisite dragon tattoo for her back. But when Lui and Shiba begin an affair, Ama's jealousy is stirred and the situation becomes explosive. BACKCOVER: “Shocking, brutal, riveting, and best of all, well written.”

4 out of 5 stars off the beaten path.......2007-05-24

A short, freaky yet moving book about a young Japanese woman and her two boyfriends. If you have ever wanted to know why people get piercings and tattoos and do other weird things to themselves you will find out that... they don't know why either. Not my usual fare but I really enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars Snakes and Earrings.......2007-02-27

I loved the book. It's a slice-of-life story set in modern Tokyo. Focused only on the three characters, the girl and her two lovers, you really feel like to know the characters, and whether you love or hate them, they are real, very human, very vulnerable and very sad. I love the emotions, the true-to-life dialog and action, and the vivid descriptions.

            5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2007-02-23

Easy read...didnt hurt that i couldnt put the book down...passion...desire...unfaightfulness...all the elements for a wild ride and an unforgetable ending...

5 out of 5 stars Stark but beautiful.......2007-02-15

This novella deals with the subjects of sadism and the meaning of life, which is as unlikely a pairing as any, but somehow works.

I found the story to be utterly odd, definitely explicit and vulgar for much of the 120 pages, but also containing unexpected beauty on every page.

I don't think it's fair to make completely black and white assumptions about this edgy book, because it gives one plenty to think on.

            4 out of 5 stars Just a fantasy.......2007-02-01

This is a diverting sizzler, but I did not feel it had anything much to do with social reality in Japan today. The only placename in the book is Shinjuku, and the family background of the protagonists is not even sketched. The isolation of the characters is less a reflection of an alleged underground milieu, than of the fact that they are simply creatures of sexual fantasy, not rounded novelistic characters. After their wild sado-masochistic antics the story has nowhere to go but to a slick trick ending, ungrounded in what precedes, and an equally ungrounded shift into soft sentimental tones as the two survivors in the gruesome threesome seem to foresee some sort of married life together. The author is in the funky tradition of Tanizaki, the postwar nikutai (body) writers, Mishima, the young Oe, etc. Will she develop into a substantial novelist? Hard to say. But let's hope she never loses her crackling tempo.

Following the epic adventures of the highly praised Fire Angels, acclaimed fantasist Jane Routley continues the riveting tale of the beautiful young Dion Holyhands, the world's most powerful mage, in a mystical empire recalling the fabled opulence of czarist Russia.

In search of her missing niece Dally, Dion arrives in luxurious Akieva, the glorious and corrupt capitol of decadent Aramaya. Here, at the dazzling court of the handsome young emperor, Dion discovers her niece trapped in the web of necromancy and deceit hiding within the magnificent Winter Palace. But Dion's archenemy lurks at the center of the web, Bedazzer, the ruthless demon who has vowed to possess her-no matter the cost. In the ensuing deadly conflict, Dion must confront the dark secrets of her own heart and the mighty evil concealed in those around her.

4 out of 5 stars Better plot, ending still a problem.......2006-08-23

The third in her series, "Aramaya" is by the best work is best work by author Jane Routley. Like the rest of her novels, it does feature a plot which can drag (although this is a huge improvement over the plot in books 1 and 2) and an extremely sudden and simple ending.

The body of this work is much more interesting. In book three, Dion the mage heads back to her people's homeland, Aramaya, which she has never been too. Recently divorced she is romantically susceptible to the charms of a handsome prince and fellow necromancer fighter. Really though, she crossed the ocean looking for her niece, who's face showed up in a holographic image she saw back at home. Since this niece was last seen and heard of with some connection to Dion's own haunting demon, she has to track down the girl, kill the demon (or banish it again) and save the day. Pretty typical work for Dion really.

The main part of the book is really very good, and the ending just happens all of a sudden, with everything being huncky dorey pretty easily and with minimal conflict. This author doesn't seem to be able to pull of a good ending, although in her next novel "The Three Sisters" under the name Rebecca Locksley, the ending more subtly played out. That book takes place 400 years earlier in the same world.

This was better than the first two books, so four stars. But I know the author is capable of more. Perhaps her sequel to the "Three Sisters" will develop her promise.

5 out of 5 stars Jane Routley is also Rebecca Locksley.......2005-12-14

Ms. Routley has written "The Three Sisters" in 2004 under the name Rebecca Locksley. I found this information harder to come by than it should be, so am sharing it for those who enjoyed her books about Dion.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting but not a page turner.......2000-08-06

Dion is searching for her niece Dally and gets the help of a prince. Later she has a lasting love affair with him but is still in love with Shad. She is confused and doesn't know what to do to get over Shad. Anger, love, and tenderness still exist for him as well as the desire to get back together with him. Meanwhile Bedazzer/Andre still exists and when Dion finds out about the powerful necromancers that are experimenting fate may play a hand in bringing them together for one last time ...

3 out of 5 stars not quite as good as MAGE HEART and FIRE ANGLES.......1999-08-28

i was an avid fan of routley after reading the first two books about Dion Holyhands, but this book (which i waited for with baited breath)was a bit disappointing. Dion, for reasons that are never quite explained, decides to head off to Aramaya to search for her missing niece. instead of concentrating on the magical aspects of what was supposed to be the magical epicenter of Dions world, the book concentrates more on Dions wish to have children, her failed marriage, her current love affair, and her love for her niece whom she hated in the second book. once again, Routley manages to wrap up the entire novel in the last thirty or so pages. This book also ends with unanswered questions, baiting us for another installment for this magical soap opera. quite frankly, i was expecting more.

5 out of 5 stars fantasy at its' very best.......1999-06-11

The powerful Mage Dion Holyhands the Dragonslayer believes her missing niece Dally lives in Akieva, the capital of Aramaya. Dion travels across the ocean in search of Dally, but her ship is wrecked. Dion and her companion Kitten manage to survive and make it to the capital city where they meet Dally.

To the mage's shock, her relative seems to be a slave to a cartel of necromancers. However, Dion learns that her worst enemy, Bedazzer the Demon, possesses her niece. Dion knows she must confront her worst nightmare, a fight to almost certainly the death with Bedazzer. If she is fortunate to come out of this alive and awake, she next must challenge the necromancer crowd. Only with victories against impossible odds will Dion be able to free her niece.

ARAMAYA, the third novel in Jane Routley's superb Dion series is an interesting tale that shows the author's ability to paint vivid descriptions of other worlds. The characters are fully developed, adding to an overall sense of exotic realism. The story line is fast-paced and filled with action as expected from an author who in a short time has become renowned for her romantic fantasies.

In response to a previous reviewer, I, too, note that like many business people in the field of education, Mr. Buzan tends to over sell his product. However, I've tracked Buzan's work for sometime, and used mindmapping to great effect in many aspects of my life. (If you've ever fumbled through public speaking with 3X5 cards, a mind map will make you a much better speaker.) As for "spurious claims" and "pseudoscience", in absence of any specific evidence for those assertions a reader would be foolish to believe the previous review. Do we know enough about the brain to make all the claims Buzan makes? Probably not. But as with all the criticisms of Brain Based Teaching and Learning methods, you would be a foolish teacher if you were to wait around for definitive proof. You might equate it to the arguments over global warming. Ok, maybe the science to support all the doomsday scenarios of G.W. is a bit overblown. But to ignore it and expect it to go away is insanity. Mind Mapping is a terrific method of organizing information that has been used effectively in the business world in one form or another for years. As we are visually centric creatures, it only makes sense to get a view of the big picture. Buzan's method and mind mapping in general aren't about kids thinking more, or thinking harder. They are about thinking smarter. And the empiracle evidence is there to prove it. Bells and whistles and what not aside, using mindmaps with kids, where appropriate, is just good practice.

1 out of 5 stars Narrowing the broader mind.......2005-07-24

I'm afraid he's done it again. But to kids this time. As we have learned from science; The more strategies you use well and know where to apply, the more likely you will be a good learner. We have SQ3R, imagination, questioning techniques, solid reading strategy, communication with peers, and a wide range of graphic organizers such as timelines, graphs, matrices, concept maps, annotated images etc. The field is extremely wide.

Then we have the mind map. He feeds the kids sweeties and balloons and blinkers them into using a very limited technique and uses pseudoscience to teach them to apply it to every learning task in their curriculum. This is bad news.

The trick is to get people into mind mapping(R), and tell them that it works miracles. Then they buy more of the same kind of Buzan book, which says just about the same thing (He basically claims it will make you Einstein).

OK, he claims to have originated the technique. But it has been around for centuries, and was actually further developed by Dr Allan Collins years before Buzan jumped on the bandwagon. That's bad enough. But to pick on kids and tweak their insecurities about not being as smart as Einstein just to sell more books is really beyond the pale.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for kids.......2005-01-21

A great book for kids wanting to enter the world of Mind Mapping. Also for elders who want to teach their kids to learn to mind map.
I am a professional mind mapper in the Netherlands and therefore a Buzan licensed instructor. Some of the books of mister Buzan could have been better, but this book is great. Loads of colorful mind maps, brought to you in a very pleasant and playful manner. It will teach you how to think like a child in order to be able to help your kid.
