In Thieves' Paradise, bestselling author Eric Jerome Dickey weaves an engaging tale of betrayal, desperation, love, and loss seen through the eyes of Dante Black. Unemployed and down on his luck, Dante spends most of his time frequenting an L.A. diner where he hopes to win over Pam, an attractive waitress and actress wannabe. The rest of his time is spent reluctantly working for Scamz, a colorful character from Dante's past with a taste for illegal operations, beautiful women, and flashy cars. Rounding out this cast of clichéd yet well-developed characters is Dante's best friend, Jackson, who's deep in debt and eager for a quick solution. Throughout the novel, Dante drifts through seedy pool halls and lavish mansions as his friends quickly become enemies, lovers, and unbearable burdens.

My life had been mean and violent, so all of that colored my perception... Hard to find peace in a storm. I'd been waiting for the storm to leave me. Sometimes you had to leave the storm.

Always fresh, often perceptive, occasionally funny, and undeniably sincere, Thieves' Paradise proves yet again why Dickey continues to top the charts with each artful novel he crafts. --Gisele Toueg

3 out of 5 stars Definitely not the typical Jerome Dickey Novel .......2006-05-04

This was definitely a new genre for E. Jerome Dickey. I have always loved his novels because he is able to write from the woman's perspective so eloquently. He pays extra details to the surroundings in the book and to the characters. I also love the way he manages to mention characters from previous books in each novel. It makes his characters seem real. The problem here was the crime element. I could not get used to him writing about this. Maybe I was disappointed in that, unitl I did not allow my self to enjoy the book?

4 out of 5 stars Thieve's Paradise.......2006-03-09

Really enjoyed this book - full of little surprises. I gave to my 31 year old nephew to read and he's almost finished - likes it too. We're both interested in more books from Eric Jerome Dickey.

Thieves' Paradise goes along with every day life and you can relate to it. With all the identity theft and other illegal activities you can see a brother or sister who has lost there jobs or working a job that barely pays the bills turning to a life of crime.

Book Description

Centering on the disorienting experiences of the returning soldier and drawing on multiple traditions, Yusef Komunyakaa's poetry is potent, live, and, like the strains of jazz running through it, an erudite and soulful music.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars one of the most original poets out there.......2000-09-21

I had known of Komunyakaa for a while, but only recently began reading him. I'm glad I did. This is a book full of very different types of poems--some with regular stanza lengths, some with numbered sections, some short and without stanzas--and it is consistently excellent throughout. I think many poets tend to repeat themselves, but Komunyakaa seems to be one of the most courageous and technically sound poets there is. He is known for his poems about jazz, racial prejudice and the Vietnam War ( the entire section "Debriefing Ghosts" is a terrific sequence of anti-war poems), but I also enjoyed the ones not as easily catagorized. "Kosmos" is one of the best poems written to Walt Whitman I've ever read, and "The Glass Ark," about a couple unearthing fossils in the LaBrea Tar Pits in Los Angeles, is funny, playful and sexual without losing an odd seriousness. His language at times reminds me of Charles Simic--he seemingly finds the most disparate images that somehow seem "right"--but he is entirely on his own when it comes to combining long and short sequences, humor, sex, music and memory. Highly reccomended.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary.......1999-05-03

I was stunned at the amount of intelligence and density in this poetry. I ordered this after hearing "The Deck" on NPR, as a gift for my wife, and we both consider it a treasure.

                  Book Description

Though some are happy, many are not. Even among those who would describe themselves as happy, there are many who only imagine they are, or remember that they once were, or expect they someday will be. Many of those who are unhappy are so because they are engaged in a pursuit of unhappiness. Through studies of novels, stories, films, and narratives of actual experiences, The Living Dead and the End of Hope explores the reasons people seek to make themselves unhappy. The book explores the nature and ends of human desire, the role of hope in unhappiness, and the importance of imagination and fantasy in human life. Its central thesis is that the pursuit of unhappiness is a flight from emotional aliveness into a self-imposed state of life without the feeling of being alive.

Hoke Moseley's boss is out for a promotion. His partner is having a baby. His ex-wife is moving to California with a major leaguer who makes ten times Hoke's policeman's salary. And Hoke's two daughters have shown up at his squalid, flea-bitten Miami Beach motel: they're expecting a dad.

When it rains in Florida, it pours. Dead broke, Hoke needs to find a home inside the Miami city limits within twenty-four hours, while he and his pregnant partner, Ellita Sanchez, have been assigned fifty old unsolved murder cases by their chief. But while Major Willie Brownley wants results -- and all the credit -- for solving some cold cases, one very hot case won't let Hoke go. In fact, this little matter of a dead junkie and his beautiful stepmother might just be the answer to all of Hoke's prayers...

4 out of 5 stars An interesting career cut all too short.......2007-05-08

Charles Willeford wrote only four novels featuring his unique policeman, Hoke Mosley. New Hope for the Dead was the last in the series, and Willeford died before writing anther of these classic mysteries. All four novels took place in Miami during the early turn of the Century ending in 2003. This novel was published by the rather classic Vintage Crime/Black Lizard series.
Hoke Mosley had an answer for every problem, from the most intricate to the mundane. He may not have been right (and was rarely polically correct), but he lived by a strong personal set of beliefs. Beyond presenting complex mysteries, Willeford defined a hardboild cop who offered advice and help to everyone he encountered (whether they wanted it or not), including a bevy of women, from teenage daughters to female coworkers who looked to him for advice and guidance.

New Hope for the Dead was my favorite of the four novels, but none are to be missed. There is a certain quaintness to these stories, and they all evoked nostalgia for a plainer, simpler time. I miss Hoke. I miss Willeford. They both ended their careers far too soon for me.

4 out of 5 stars great characterizations overshadow the thin storyline..........2003-08-03

'New Hope for the Dead' is one of Charles Willeford's comic-mystery novels starring Hoke Moseley, a crusty yet lovable member of the Miami police force. It is hard to not enjoy the trials and tribulations of Moseley: work partner getting pregnant, his own love life on the skids, two teenaged daughters arriving at his doorstep, etc. Always interesting; I never felt like I was reading the script to a soap opera. However Willeford forgot to include a strong crime element. Yes, there is a dead junkie and a sexy step-mom. But the story itself compares badly to 'Miami Blues', a much superior Hoke Moseley novel. And compared to Willeford's early masterpiece 'The Woman Chaser' one senses the Hoke Moseley series was not the best way for Willeford to end his career.

Bottom line: more of enjoyable literary junk food rather than quality stuff. Recommended for Willeford fans only.

3 out of 5 stars He cuts corners........2003-06-21

Hoke Moseley lives in a residential hotel in Miami Beach. He turns over half of his pay to his ex-wife. He is a sergeant in the Miami police force and needs to move into Miami. Suddenly he has his two teenage daughters staying with him and his partner is pregnant. He cannot afford decent housing and has been tasked, along with two others, to solve ten out of fifty cold cases in two months' times. In the meantime he wonders if his last homicide case was accidental death or, well, homicide. The book is excellent--a thoroughly professional job.

                  4 out of 5 stars Hoke gets a house. . ........1998-10-28

In this second book of the Hoke Moseley series, our loser-pants police detective must deal with various sleazoids while figuring out how to raise his two daughters who have been sent back to him because his ex-wife's pro-ball-player novio finds them distracting during his spring training. Sound Familiar? It's not. Funny and amoral, Hoke's counseling sessions with his daughters are not for the timid or politically correct. Lacking the outrageous antagonists of MIAMI BLUES or SIDESWIPE, this is not the strongest book of the series, but it is an essential set-up for the next tale. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Intelligent Character Study.......1998-10-08

So often, you come across a series of books of a certain detective or private investigator and there is no character growth. Well, this book brings about a refreshing change in that procedure. In fact, Willeford gives us a whole novel's worth of character study and you wish it would never end. Hoke Moseley is arguably the most realistic, honest, and likable police detective created in this genre. If you are looking for fluff, do not read this. If you are looking for an intelligent, creative, and interesting read, this is the book for you.

4 out of 5 stars Another interesting book.......2002-05-13

(This book is a sequel to The Armlet of the Gods, and the third book in the quadrilogy.) Compelled to return to the worlds of Lucifer, Alan MacDougall enters through the third gate, and finds himself on the Island of Scath. The island is divided in an eternal war between the sorceress Scathach and the god Amaraduk, and MacDougall is now caught in the middle. However, when a group of Celtic gods arrive, looking for revenge on MacDougall, things get really interesting!

This is another interesting book. This story is even more intense than the previous two, with Alan MacDougall learning more about himself, his friend the bard Taliesin, and the world that Lucifer created. Personally, I enjoyed the even more extensive use of the Sumerian pantheon in this book.

So, let me say that this is a very interesting book, one that I highly recommend!

4 out of 5 stars An oldie but a goodie.......2006-08-26

I first read this book back in 1987 after I had been suffering from persistent hypoglycemia for about a year. The doctors said my blood tests were normal and tried giving me all kinds of unhelpful prescription drugs for what they perceived might be simple anxiety, allergies, inner ear problems, and at one point, even a brain tumor!

The author's book consists of plain and safe advice - meal spacing and frequency to prevent lows, along with what really helped me - his advice on nutritional supplements. To be exact, he advises hypoglycemics take a good B-complex vitamin with extra pantothenic acid and choline and inositol as well as daily doses of brewer's yeast to get easily absorbed amounts of GTF chromium into your system. His advice brought me back from the dead. The supplements were absolutely essential to my recovery. When I saw my doctor and told him about the supplements and how they cured me, he wrote it off as coincidence. After all, it wasn't drugs or surgery, so my recovery couldn't be real could it?

The author does spend a lot of unnecessary space in his book trying to convince readers that hypoglycemia exists, but most of the book is still excellent. Before you try more elaborate, expensive, and possibly unsafe recommendations for your hypoglycemia, give this old book a try. I recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars Fact or Fiction?.......2004-03-19

Readers interested in this medical area may wish to visit the following website : quackwatch.com where some revealing facts can be found about the self styled 'Dr' Carlton Frederick, who apparently, had no medical training, and found himself in touble with the law, for the unlawful practice of medicine.

                                    5 out of 5 stars anything Carlton does is a must-have ..........2003-06-18

Quite simply, one of the best nutritionists there ever was...

Rational, sane, and coherent, follow Carlton Fredericks' advice: and read the other nutrition authors he recommends.

One place he falls short, is the environmental and psychological impact on health. All is not in food. One needs to get the unhealthy stresses and influences out of one's life. The issue, for example, of the company we keep, and its impact on our health, is not emphasised enough in his work.

But his dietary advice is intelligent, discretionary, and diverse. Fredericks is no 'food faddist.' Follow his advice, and you are well on the road to better health.

I wouldn't be without the Carlton Frederick's books I own, and always look to acquire more when I can find them. Heed his food advice. Heed his supplement advice. Believe me, you won't regret it. A truly worthy investment, from all points of view. And with all his well-researched expertise, he's got a sense of humor, too!

4 out of 5 stars Good, but for one mistake.......2001-08-13

The book reflects my trail and error attempts at controling my blood sugar. I found a mistake on page 219 with respect to the glycemic index of skim milk and whole milk. The book states that skim milk has a lower glycemic index than whole milk when the opposite is true. Other than that, the book is great.

5 out of 5 stars New Low Blood Sugar and You.......2001-01-07

I read this book years ago when I was suffering from panic attacks. I must have went through a half dozen doctors before this one doctor recomended Frederick's book. I found all of my symptoms in this book and explained in simple words what was going on with my body. After following the diet in the book, my condition reversed itself. All my symptoms were gone. Thanks to this book I now live a normal life again.
