I highly recommend this read for anyone interested in this subject matter. The book was exciting, fast paced and an easy read. You won't be disappointed

4 out of 5 stars THE UNHOLY DECEPTION.......2007-03-16

I discovered this book after researching the book of Enoch and comparing it with the UFO evidence that is throughout the Bible. It is not a far stretch for me and I find the book to be much more than science-fiction. A wonderful subject (I am of course bias!)
That said, I was a little unimpressed with the charactor development. (hence the 4 stars instead of 5)It just wasn't there. Except for the main charactor the people introduced in the first book were left right were they were. More details but not real insight. That is an editorial issue not a subject matter issue.
The premise of the book is right on. It just wasn't "deep" enough given the incredible story line that was being dealt with. Someone who is not "well read" can easily enjoy this book. I wanted more.
In the end the subject matter wins out to make a great (albeit somewhat shallow) story.

3 out of 5 stars Middle-book doldrums, but still fun........2006-06-29

L. A. Marzulli, Unholy Deception: The Nephilim Return (Zondervan, 2003)

It depresses me that the Christian fiction world seems to have bonded over the wooden, dull Left Behind series when there's stuff like this out there. You want a fun, action-packed series about the Tribulation that actually has characters that aren't made of cardboard? Marzulli's Nephilim trilogy fills the bill. Not that it doesn't have problems, but in comparison, this is Pulitzer material.

Unholy Deception suffers from the middle-book-of-the-trilogy doldrums, but it's still pretty good stuff. The usual suspects are back, this time trying to thwart the Nephilim's attempt to dupe society into believing that a tomb they buried two thousand years ago contains the body of Jesus along with extraterrestrial artifacts that would prove a link between Jesus and the Martians (actually, the Nephilim, who are tied in with Lucifer and his fallen angels).

The book starts a bit slowly, as Marzulli reintroduces us to the characters coming over from the first book and adds a few more into the mix. Once it gets going, though, the action comes fast and thick. Marzulli keeps the pages turning, and the book's ending pretty much guarantees that those who have come this far are going to go onto the third book in the series. Good stuff. ***

5 out of 5 stars A very worthy sequel to Nephilim.......2004-06-19

I found Nephilim to be such a unique approach to end-times Christian fiction that when I closed it I immediately opened its sequel, The Unholy Deception. The continuity of the story was good and the plot thickens in this second installment. Once again I found the characterization to be excellent. The only trifling annoyance to me was the emphasis on Uri's broken English...but this was not enough to downgrade the book. The idea of Satan and his fallen angels using the deception of extraterrestrials was clever. Yes, this book is far-fetched, but after all, it IS science fiction. It's action-packed and well written--altogether quite entertaining. I am eager to read the 3rd installment in the trilogy.

5 out of 5 stars Introduction of new thoughts regarding end-times........2004-02-06

I really enjoyed the book. The notion of John the Beloved continuing til the coming of Christ was new for me. The nephilim and the fallen angels as aliens, grays and repetile-like beings, connects alien and biblical communities. The Great Deception could well manifest in ways we least expect. I can't wait for the 3rd installment. P.S. This is my first review. That is how strong I feel about the story. Thanks.

4 out of 5 stars Second in the Owen Archer Series.......2007-03-09

Candace Robb has read and researched medieval history for many years, having studied for a Ph.D. in Medieval and Anglo-Saxon Literature. She divides her time between Seattle and the UK, frequently spending time in Scotland and York to research her books.

York is very close to my own home and many of the places mentioned in the Owen Archer books are still there to be seen and of course Archbishop John Thorseby is mentioned in the records of York Minster. All this adds spice for me and helps me to picture the time and events that took place. This is the second novel in what is proving to be a captivating series.

It is the year of our Lord 1365, Owen Archer is called to the Minster Close by Archbishop Thoresby. The Archbishop is well aware that Owen has many skills to add to his expertise with the long bow. The Welsh archer also has a rare talent for detective work. While the city of York has been celebrating Corpus Christi, a man has been murdered. The man's severed hand has been delivered to Gilbert Ridley, a merchant and Owen is sent to investigate.

4 out of 5 stars The Lady Chapel.......2004-02-17

The Lady Chapel, the second Owen Archer mystery, is an enjoyable read. For me, the best part of the mystery is seeing how Owen puts together all the pieces of the puzzle to solve the crime; for the reader the mystery isn't that difficult to solve. Detective work is still new to Archer, and he is a reluctant sleuth. How he develops the skills to solve the crimes is part of the enjoyment of the series.

Candace Robb does a good job of conveying the atmosphere of medieval York, and she is very good at avoiding psychological anachronisms. Her characters don't psychoanalyze each other, and feelings and motivations are described metaphorically not analytically.

The Lady Chapel continues to develop the working relationship between Owen and Thoresby, Archbishop of York. Owen and Lucie are adapting to married life with some difficulties. This book introduces us to Jasper, a young boy, who witnesses the first murder and then must go into hiding, fending for himself. He is such a sweet, yet tough, kid; I cheered for him throughout the entire book. The Lady Chapel should be read after The Apothecary Rose in order to understand the relationships of the characters. Readers of Rose will enjoy this second installment of the series.

4 out of 5 stars OWEN IS GETTING BETTER.......2003-08-01

I read (and reviewed) The Apothecary Rose simply because I enjoy the time period (Edward III, HYW, Welsh archers, etc.)and enjoy learning about the intricacies of every-day life. Very fascinating. However, I didn't particularly like the first outing beyond the periodic history lessons - the writing style takes some getting used to because she jumps point of view from 3rd person to 1st person, which she does in The Lady Chapel - I found this to be maddening at times. Her other fault is her tendency to rely on convenience to push the mystery along. The Lady Chapel is definitely a marked improvement over the first, but still Owen is very two dimensional - we just don't know him enough to really care. I can only recommend this book to people with a taste for the period, but not for hard-core mystery fans.

    5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Mystery.......2003-05-10

Wow! Candace Robb is a marvel. Many compare her to Ellis Peters (the Brother Cadfael series), but I'd put her well before Ms Peters. Although I thoroughly enjoy Brother Cadfael and feel comfortable with his author's competence, Ms Robb is not only formally trained in historical studies/research, she's also an excellent teller of tales and a wonderful teacher as well.

Ms Robb is apparently just shy by a dissertation of her PhD, and one can see by the quality of the historical detail in the Lady Chapel and her other books, that she probably had gotten well into her paper before abandoning the project. (I've worked through MA level and know exactly how much work goes into completing the coursework, let alone the research for papers.)

She also has, if not formal training in writing, at least a very clearly defined concept of what it takes. In her "Author's Notes" at the back of Lady Chapel, she writes an excellent exposition on what it means to be an author, especially an author of historical fiction. THOSE OF YOU WRITING PAPERS for English lit, journalism, history, etc. or for those writing historical fiction themselves, TAKE NOTE: She makes some eminently quotable statements about these subjects in that chapter. For instance on the subject of character: "Many people think of history as mighty figures, epic events, and statistics. But at their best, historians bring the past to life by suggesting the motivations of the mighty....Historical novelists or dramatists go further by reducing the mighty to human scale. Shakespeare put a human face on Richard III in his fatal battle by using the fact noted by one historian, that the turning point for Richard was when he was unhorsed. The Bard lets us witness Richard's tragic awareness as he cries, 'A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse (p. 283)!'" She notes too, that it is the simple, every day character and his/her believability that brings a story to life (p. 283). Later, on the subject of motive and event, she writes, "A key element in any study in character is motive. Motive traces the trajectory of an action....What fascinates both the historian and the novelist is that any one event seen through the eyes of different participants suggests completely different motives, and it's the sum of the motives that culminates in the epic events. For a mystery writer, there is an additional fascination in how many people have motives for any crime, innocence being at times little more than a lack of opportunity (p 283)."

The engaging tales the author creates by using historical characters and detail are an artful way of encouraging the reader to find out more. Although my area of historical interest has always been the ancient world, particularly the Near East, I found myself browsing lists for books on the age of Edward III and of the so-called Black Prince Edward of Woodstock, his son. I wanted to find out more information about the period. Now that's a teacher!

The Lady Chapel is a very complex tale of murder, court intrigue, passion and deceit in the city of York. The author's descriptions of the environment create a vivid picture of life in the 14th Century. Well worth it.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2002-10-23

I read at least one book a week in many genres - historical fiction, fiction, mystery, thriller, action, fantasy - and I loved this second book in the Owen Archer series.
Lady Chapel is even better than the first! I can't wait to read the next one. Characterization is superb, you grow to know these people and care about them. The story is based on real historical facts, but honestly I couldn't care less because I get so wrapped up in the characters. My only wish in this book was that the author had put her loyalties with the reader in regard to Alice Perrer and let her fall from grace and give us some juicy vengeance. I cannot believe there aren't more reviews of Ms. Robb's Owen Archer series, they should be hugely popular! I will be recommending them to every reader I know.

    Book Description

Acclaimed mystery writer Sharon Kahn returns with a flavorful new crime novel set in that most unlikely of Jewish population centers, Eternal, Texas.

Ruby knows she's in for trouble when her longtime nemesis, Essie Sue, talks her into housing Essie Sue's twin cousins, Lester and Larry. The boys are in town for pre-Bar Mitzvah schooling from Rabbi Kevin Kapstein. They will be no trouble, says Essie Sue. Famous last words.

Ruby, a rabbi's widow, has never felt much sympathy for Rabbi Kevin, but that's about to change. They now have something in common: their determination to survive Lester and Larry. Whoever coined the phrase "the terrible twos" didn't know Lester and Larry, "the terrible twelves."

Kevin will teach; Ruby will house; and Essie Sue, ever the hostess, will orchestrate the grandest Bar Mitzvah feast in Temple Rita's history. And the star attraction -- besides Essie Sue, of course -- is sure to be Herman Guenther, master lox cutter, who recently moved to town from New Jersey.

But when Herman meets an untimely demise from his own slicing knife, Essie Sue's plans seem all but ruined. Not to mention Herman's. Something's strange about this murder, as Ruby is quick to discover.

Tracing the victim's roots back to Nazi-era Denmark, Ruby soon puts the lox on the platter in a chase that takes her from Eternal to Alaska to New York. She asks some poignant questions along the way and hears some shocking answers.

Sharon Kahn's witty Ruby, the Rabbi's Wife Mysteries have universal appeal, as they make us laugh at ourselves even as we watch Ruby unravel the puzzles of life. With both humor and insight, Kahn proves once again that she's at the top of her form.

1 out of 5 stars Easily the worst mystery I have EVER read.......2004-11-15

First of all, this book barely qualifies for the mystery genre. If anything, it is more a travelogue of Alaska. While interesting, not what I thought I was buying. This Alaska trip takes up the majority of the book and has only, possibly, 2 pages total that relate the purported story line of a murdered man.

Overall, the book contains maybe, maybe 30 pages of mystery. Our "detective" isn't even a detective since she doesn't solve the murder. Urg. The ending makes absolutely no logical sense, even in the world of cozies where characters are "quirky."

Contrary to what another reviewer wrote, it offers ZERO insight into the process of preparing to become a bar/bat mitzvah. There is only one training activity profiled and is certainly not representative of the training for this event.

I cannot adequately express how deeply I believe you should not buy this book.

    4 out of 5 stars Ruby Rules!.......2003-04-07

Kahn's 'Ruby, the Rabbi's Wife'(well, widow) series is a delight! All four mysteries are vehicles for Kahn's wicked sense of humor and sharp descriptions of the Jewish community, and they are plotted simply and entertainingly. In "Kill the Lox", Essie Sue (the Jewish princess)is planning a bar mitzvah for the terrorist twins. Kevin Kapstein, the fumbling and pompous rabbi, stumbles through the plot as well, lurching along behind Essie Sue as they plan the largest celebration Eternal, Texas has ever seen in the Temple Rita.

Plans go astray when Herman, the master lox cutter, is found sliced by his own knife, and Ruby is off on another mystery--one which takes her to Alaska and to New York. She solves the crime--actually, two crimes--with the help of the two men in her love life and her best friend and e-mail correspondent, Nan.

It's all much fun and entertainment. I do hope Sharon Kahn is hard at work on the next installment in this series!

    4 out of 5 stars Amusing cozy.......2002-09-18

In Eternal, Texas, Essie Sue Margolis persuades Ruby, the widow of the former rabbi, and the current rabbi Kevin Kapstein to host a Bar Mitzvah at Temple Rita for her two "lovable" third cousins, Larry and Lester Levee. Very quickly, Ruby and company find the two "terrible twelve" year olds to be monsters of the first order. However, with Essie masterminding the ceremony, the Bar Mitzvah should prove to be the social event of the season for the small congregation. To add luster, lox cutter grandmaster Herman Guenther will perform his miracle dicing and slicing.

Herman fails to show up at a meeting with Essie and Ruby so the two ladies journey to his home only to find the grandmaster murdered. While Essie bemoans the impact on the twin's Bar Mitzvah, Ruby investigates by back trailing where Herman has been to include Alaska and New Jersey. Ruby finds herself up to her gefilte fish in a lox conspiracy that dates back to the Nazi occupation of Denmark.

HOLD THE CREAM CHEESE, KILL THE LOX is an amusing cozy that provides the audience insight into pre-Bar Mitzvah training. The story line is humorous because of the actions of Essie groaning over the murder's impact on the Bar Mitzvah and the havoc caused by the non-mench twins. Though why Ruby and Essie gallivant to Alaska and New Jersey to solve the homicide seems weak, the motivation for murder is fun to follow. Sharon Kahn serves up a taste of Jewish American life with a few kibbutz to nosh on inside a cozy that is clearly not chopped liver.

          Book Description

Sharing tales of misfortune is a common practice among women in many cultures. Among the Paxtun women of Afghanistan and Pakistan, articulating ones despondency (gham) is part of a ritual which serves to establish and maintain relationships. Moreover, it also qualifies her to be a woman of
honor. Grima draws a parallel between this ritual and the infamous male practice of honor killing. Her research is based on narratives encompassing Paxtun women's life histories, misfortunes, and ailments as well as the contexts in which these stories are normally recounted. Her access to different
levels of Paxtun society enables her to express the diverse ways in which this ritual is performed throughout their culture.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ethnography of Communication Provides Unique Insight.......2002-02-19

When discussing the Paxtuns, a major ethnic group which straddles the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan, one thing that scholars are keen to mention is paxtunwali, the Paxtun code of morality and honor. There is a Paxtun proverb that refers to the paxtunwali, which says ?you don?t speak Paxto; you do paxto.? But what does doing paxto entail? More often than not, the description of what it means to do paxto has come from a male scholar who studied among male Paxtuns. Hospitality (melmastia), right to refuge (nanawati), and revenge (badal) are the three precepts of the paxtunwali as they are traditionally understood.

But Benedicte Grima, as a female anthropologist and folklorist, was allowed access to the world of female Paxtuns, which had received far less attention than the more public male sphere. She argues that men and women have different ways of carrying out the paxtunwali, especially in terms of badal. Women consider it to be keeping badal when they visit one another in order to inquire about events that have recently taken place, as well as when they give each other gifts. Badal should therefore be understood more in terms of general reciprocity in social relationships, rather than just as blood feuds.

It is on these visits of inquiry that most of Grima?s ethnography focuses. She uses Dell Hymes? model of the ethnography of communication to focus on a speech event called tapos, which literally means ?to inquire? to Paxtun men, but is defined by women as making a personal visit to the female head of a household to ask about an illness or other misfortune. During each of these visits, there is a performance of a woman-to-woman speech genre. The women share stories of the misfortunes of their families in great detail, while following a sort of genre formula.

While working in the framework of the ethnography of communication, Grima also provides an ethnographic account of emotion which is compelling. She argues that emotions are both culturally constructed and socially performed; they are not simply inner states arising solely from within the individual herself. Cognition and emotion are therefore intricately linked, since one must understand the social norms in order to know which emotions are appropriate and how to perform them. She explains the performance of emotion as something Paxtun women do in order to show that they understand the cultural norms that they must follow in doing paxto. For example, when a woman is married, she must shed tears, because traditionally, being taken from one?s mother?s home and into the home of one?s husband is a tragic event, or gham. Even if one is happy to marry her husband, which is not the norm, she must still cry.

The concept of gham is central to Grima?s study. Gham means ?sorrow?, as opposed to xadi, ?joy?. In the misfortune narratives she collected at tapos, as well as the life stories she collected under more controlled circumstances, the main theme was gham. Women?s life stories were told as a series of ghams, focusing primarily on the tragedies that they had endured. This is where the subtitle of the book comes from; ?The Misfortunes Which Have Befallen Me? is an opening line to one of these life story narratives.

Once the Paxtun women learned of Grima?s desire to hear their life stories, they began to compete. The person who could tell the saddest story would gain the greatest respect from her female Paxtun peers. She would be recognized by her fellow Paxtun women as truly a worthy member of their community, because she had undergone so many hardships as a result of the Paxtun way of life, yet continued to endure these troubles for the sake of maintaining her own honor and that of her family.
Grima argues that withstanding a series of ghams is a great deal of what it means for a woman to do paxto. Being a Paxtun woman involves a great deal of hardship. A woman must stay in her home unless granted permission to leave by a male relative. She is separated from her family in a patrilocal arranged marriage system. She must maintain the honor of her entire family, which among other things requires veiling in public and avoiding contact with males who are not relatives. If she dishonors the family, she is subject to beatings, and perhaps even death. If one is willing and able to undergo all of these hardships for the sake of her family and the community, she is considered a true Paxtun, one who does paxto by following paxtunwali.

It should be noted that Grima?s study focuses primarily on rural Paxtun women. Although she did fieldwork among urban Paxtuns as well, they tended to be less traditional. As urban dwellers, they were less tightly bound by the norms of a small rural community. They therefore claimed that they did not have any life stories to tell, because they had suffered no ghams. It would seem to be implied therefore, following Grima?s theory that for women suffering ghams is central to what it means to do paxto, that these urban women do not do paxto to as great of an extent as their rural counterparts. A comparative ethnography of urban and rural Paxtun women would help explore this question.

The Performance of Emotion among Paxtun Women is reminiscent of Lila Abu-Lughod?s widely read ethnography of communication and emotion among Bedouin women, Veiled Sentiments. Like Veiled Sentiments, it is an important read for anyone interested in feminist anthropology, the ethnography of communication, the ethnography of emotion, folklore, or Islamic studies.

This pocketbook is designed for the masses, and is written in an easy to follow format.

If you enjoy Mindell's other books, you will be please with this one. Along with discussing the standard natural anti-allergy options, it mentioned several that even I was not familiar with. I was very pleased with this and have bought additional copies of it for loved ones. The "HoT 55 Antiallergy Supplements" was my favourite chapter. Excellent resource.
