5 out of 5 stars To Carlos, with gratitude.......2007-06-22

Carlos Castaneda was one of the most controversial writers of the twentieth century. Some in academia branded him a fraud for claiming his stories were biographical rather than fiction, while lauding him as a great novelist for exposing a mass audience to otherwise inaccessible philosophical abstractions they claimed were largely plagiarized. Each of his works is a piece of a larger puzzle, which makes it impossible to critique any one book without addressing the larger context into which it fits.

His first two books, "Teachings of Don Juan" and "A Separate Reality" describe experiences induced by ingesting psychotropic hallucinogenics prepared by a Yaqui Indian shaman from Sonora, Mexico he called don Juan Matus, and accounted for his becoming a guru to a generation seeking short cuts to spiritual enlightenment, as well as his lifelong interest in the relationship between perception and reality, a theme now explored in many popular books on consciousness and quantum physics. Unfortunately, these books remain his best selling works, in spite of Castaneda refuting their importance in his later works. Readers would be best served to skip these and avoid the risk of being turned off to Castaneda and missing the more stimulating works that followed.

His third and fourth works were "Journey to Ixtlan" and "Tales of Power." In Ixtlan he admits to over-estimating the value of his drug experiences, which caused him to overlook the more profound teachings of don Juan which became the focus of future writings. What emerges is a spiritual discipline dating back to the Pre-Colombian Toltec sorcerers of Latin America, culminating with don Juan's departure from our world, effectively ending Castaneda's direct affiliation.

In his fifth and sixth works "Second Ring of Power" and "Eagles Gift" Castaneda suffers strange flashbacks of what seem to be memory fragments of events he is unable to fit into any logical time sequence. In his seventh and eighth works, "Fire From Within" and "Power of Silence," Castaneda succeeds in reconstructing his lost memories, which derive from teachings previously administered by don Juan while Castaneda was in a "heightened" state of awareness.

In books nine and ten, "Art of Dreaming" and "Active Side of Infinity," Castaneda focuses on what he describes as inorganic predators from another dimension, some having the power to imprison humanity in "ordinary reality" so they can feed on the dark emotional energies we produce when succumbing to the negative thoughts they insert into our minds.

In later years several seemingly substantiating works appeared by two of Castaneda's female apprentices, Taisha Abelar and Florinda Donner-Grau. In addition, two scathing exposés were also published by two of his ex-wives. The first, "Magical Journey with Carlos Castaneda" by first wife, Margaret Runyon, offers little corroboration, since her marriage pre-dates the time when the bulk of Castaneda's adventures were claimed to have occurred. While steadfast that Castaneda was a sorcerer, she doubts the existence of don Juan, even claiming authorship of many of the concepts Castaneda ascribed to him.

The second, and more credible work, is "Sorcerer's Apprentice," by well-known writer Amy Wallace, daughter of the late best selling novelist Irving Wallace. Here again, we find little corroboration since the time of the events she describes is well after the period when Castaneda's relationship with don Juan is alleged to occur. What the book does provide is a troubling look inside Castaneda's final years, a picture of descent into what seems sexual addiction and possibly madness, leaving one to wonder if Castaneda was just one cup of cool-aid short of a Jonestown.

Many have asked why I put any stock whatsoever in Castaneda. A story from my autobiography, "The Vortex" may shed some light. A year before Castaneda published his first book I had an experience that would remain a mystery until Castaneda published "Power of Silence" twenty years later.

For a brief time, in my youth, I became a practicing Muslim, meticulously performing the complex prayer ritual five times a day. Then one night, sitting in my car, frustrated and complaining at not being able to find the address of my next sales appointment, something inside me snapped. It was as if some part of me had disconnected from my body and assumed control, lecturing me about my lack of discipline. A profound calm settled over me, rendering me simultaneously detached and engaged. For two days my sales figures soared. It was as if no one could say no to me. On the evening of the second day I decided to put my new state of being to the acid test by visiting my parents. Their behavior was so uncharacteristically supportive I hardly recognized them. It was enough to convince me that I was now living in an altered reality. But by the following morning I had returned to "normal." So distracting had this event been that I completely forgot to perform my Muslim prayers, and in fact, never did so again.

Twenty years later, in a chapter of "Power of Silence" entitled "Place of No Pity" Castaneda describes a very similar experience. In the aftermath of the event don Juan explains that humans are like televisions stuck on a channel called "self-preoccupation," lacking the energy to tune into any of the vast array of other channels available to us. To change channels, he explains, we first need to accumulate energy, by practicing rituals that are deliberate, precise and repetitious. Do this long enough and eventually our stored energy precipitates a shift to a channel where self-importance and self pity become impossible. Once this happens we connect with the force that controls the entire universe, a force don Juan called "intent," and everything can be bent to our will and even more channels can be opened, assuming we remember to keep practicing the rituals that save our energy.

This one realization alone was enough to inspire me to dedicate my autobiography "To Carlos, with gratitude."

3 out of 5 stars A Story That Gives Severe Curiousity..........2004-07-10

My dad recommended this to me; he told me he read them as a young adult when Carlos' books were just being published. My library only had this one, so I had to begin on a seemingly already well-traveled joruney. All I can say is this is one book I'll never forget. It was amazing, and yet indeed troubling for me because I've never heard anyone talk about life quite the way he explains it in a Sorcerer's eyes. I love, as a woman myself, that there are females Sorcerers that helped him, because indeed wherever men have been, women have as well. But other than that, I found them to be weird characters, people that don't sound like they live in our world whatsoever. The men, Nestor, Beningo, and Pablito and the women Gorda, Lidia, Rosa, and Josefina are just souls that could confuse any of us average kind, and I truly felt like Carlos- confused and severely curious throughout the entire novel. That's why I don't appreciate them all calling him stupid constantly, I mean, cut him slack. He's learning as they learned. And what things he learned, as well as myself.
Dad asked me if I believe it, or cast it aside as a really well- written story. I say...maybe. Look at it in my perspective. I'm young, confused, and just starting to get my own 'form'. I believe there is much more out there than can be proven under a microscope, but I need to be level- headed and realistic and understand how pessimistic viewers see it as well. There's no proof what this man wrote is true, but there's absolutely no proof he's lying either. It is eerie how good he is at writing such a story, making it sound so true, but there have been stories that have fooled us before. So I'm not sure. This man has really put me in a bind, and I don't regret it. The more you think, the more broader your mind and soul get. (That's my philosophy at least.)
I'll tell you this much, this is truly an author I would love to meet, but since that's probably never going to happen, I'm going to read more of him when I have time. I have still many questions, and regardless of if this is a story or not, I want them answered.
Just a note, try to get his very first book if can, and if you want a book on enjoyment instead of study, don't even pick this up. It's no fantasy novel. It's a whole other world of study that derives basically on shamanism in the vast and mysterious lands of Mexico.

4 out of 5 stars In Depth Sorcery..........2004-02-02

This is when the fun Begins, Carlos Comes Back From the Abyss, And begins to ponder whether he really jumped off a mountain so he goes back to mexico to see if he can find answers, and boy did he, In order to completely understand this book its a must to read the last previous books Or else you will be Lost ! It gets pretty Complicated but if you've read the previous books you can comprehend it pretty well, this book also deserves at least 2 reads you'll find different answers all the time, Once you begin comprehending you will finally be addicted to the writings of Carlos, his descriptions are so thorough It paints a most vivid picture of his details. The Beginning of Carlos's First Battle with Sorcery and he finds in-depth powers he never thought he can achieve, and this also introduces the art of dreaming and the second attention,
Carlos Replaces his beloved Teacher Don Juan as the New Nagual for Don Juan's Mysterious Apprentices.
I read this book within a week cause i couldn't put it down.
Surreal and amazing

3 out of 5 stars One must suspend their disbelief when they read this.......2000-05-29

Castaneda has a large and vocal following. Judging from previous reviews, all of them are not at the highest level of literacy, but they do seem to have confidence in the tales he relates.

I often wonder how it is that people will believe stories that can only be described as preposterous--stories at which they would scoff, if told them by a friend or coworker, simply because they are in book form.

Castaneda achieved great success with his 'Tales of Don Juan,' which the New York Times called "an extraordinary spiritual and psychological document." This book is a follow-on, only the sorceress, Dona Soledad, is a female who was trained by Don Juan, this gaining the loyalty of a feminine audience.

I have met a sorcerer's apprentice who lived with the Weshaw Indians of Mexico and used the sacred mushroom with them, and learned to use the water drum, and experienced other aspects of their culture. There are many deep mysteries to examine, and I am open to them.

Carlos Castaneda, however, does not resonate with me. Well-written, perhaps. I can see no reason to rush to judgment to believe him, though.

4 out of 5 stars Hooked on other realities.......1999-12-12

Have read several Castaneda books and while much of it is difficult for me to understand it is compelling because he gives you a glimpse of another reality and then suddenly its gone but you know you were there. I love his books.

Using his money and connections, his knowledge of the inner workings of the Secret Service charged with guarding the nation's chief executive, and the computer technology at his command, Ford uncovers a link between a mysterious midnight meeting held by the president and the untimely deaths of the other agents on duty with his son that night. Even worse, he finds evidence pointing to one chilling conclusion: that the president himself had a hand in his son's murder.

Vowing to make him pay, Ford uses his thorough knowledge of the Secret Service to undertake an attempt to kill the president and to live to enjoy his revenge, something no other presidential assassin has ever accomplished. And author Tim Green uses his own understanding of how the Secret Service goes about its mission to make the most of a riveting plot, which will give readers who've come to understand and empathize with Ford some extremely tense moments. It's hard not to cast this in one's mind as a movie; it's a juicy, action-packed story with a complex central character that has Harrison Ford written all over it. --Jane Adams

1 out of 5 stars Keep the Daytime Job.......2005-05-08

The copy of this book I read was printed on nice paper. The paper has far more substance than any of the characters in this book (they scarcely merit the name `characters'; shadows, silhouettes, paper cutouts). They just don't come across as real people. The author cavorts with their personalities as if he were yanking marionettes to be pulled in any which way. The lead character, Kurt Ford, had a gift `with people. He could read them.' Then we are told that Ford also did not feel comfortable chatting with people. Sorry, doesn't work that way. Jill is a totally unbelievable mass of wet clay who flows into whatever shape the author's whim requires. Jeremiah may weigh three hundred pounds, but he is entirely unsubstantial.

The dialogue is wooden and contrived. Here is a genuine quote from page 3, I swear I did not make this up: "My God, I love you so much," he said with quiet urgency.... "Oh, I love you too," she said fervently. "Kurt, I love you so much." The author must have toiled for hours on that exchange, tightening up the sentences and twiddling with the rhythms.

After that turgid passage, I kept reading mainly to see how badly the author could write. I was not disappointed. The plot has even less depth than the characters or the dialogue. An internet tax? There is no reasonable explanation for the bad guy's murdering the other two Secret Service agents, other than a feeble attempt to build suspense. Is the Secret Service so dense that nobody would remark on the death of three agents?

I was originally going to give this two stars for effort, but demoted him to one when the bad guy convinces two nasties to assassinate the President on the grounds that the President was preparing to sell military and intelligence secrets to the Chinese. Those nasties may have watermelons instead of brains, but if that's the best Green can do, he had really better keep his daytime job.

                    5 out of 5 stars Just fantastic.......2005-05-05

What flashes through your mind when you hear the term "Secret Service?" I'm sure you don't think of the unobtrusive way that the waiter refills your water glass at your favorite upper-crust restaurant. No, the Secret Service handles a lot of different things, but the biggie is the protection of the President of the United States. The immediate image that pops up is a bunch of big guys in nice suits and serious sunglasses, all of them flanking POTUS and looking grimly in different directions. It's not an act; no one wants another Dallas on their watch. The agents clustered around POTUS constitute the Fourth Perimeter; there is no fifth. Four is as close as it gets and no one is supposed to breach that. So what happens when a former Secret Service agent, someone who has been there and knows all the precautions and all the preparations, decides to kill the President? One answer is provided in THE FOURTH PERIMETER, the latest novel by Tim Green.

Kurt Ford is the ex-Secret Service agent who is driven to breach the Fourth Perimeter. His motivation is nothing less than heated, single-minded revenge. Ford, a retired agent turned successful technology entrepreneur, rules a perfect world with more money than he could ever reasonably spend, an intelligent and beautiful wife-to-be who is successful in her own right and an adult son who is building his own successful career in the Secret Service. Ford's perfect world is shattered, however, when his son is found dead in bed, a victim of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The official explanation is that young Ford committed suicide, but his father refuses to believe that and begins a relentless hunt for justice for his son. When he is told by an unimpeachable source that his son was murdered at the behest of the President, Ford's only focus is on bringing the most powerful man in the world to rough and personal justice.

He begins to meticulously plan his revenge, with his biggest problem being how to breach the Fourth Perimeter. He finally hits upon a brilliant scheme: rather than invading it, Ford will build it around himself. Ford slowly and carefully constructs every detail of his plan --- meeting the President, executing his plan and the man, as well as his escape. It seems as if the plan cannot fail. But a number of pitfalls and surprises await Ford as he rushes headlong to his fateful, carefully planned meeting with the President.

Green continues to hone his craft well, bringing together elements of suspense and thorough research to create readable and enjoyable novels with tales that are grounded in the real world. He will continue to bear watching --- and reading.

I kept hoping it would get better - perhaps the characters would develop... perhaps there was a great twist in the plot. No such luck. The story is weak, the characters weaker and the "twist" was laughable!

The title is something of a misnomer: while the stories do center around the ghosts and love theme, not one of them could be considered 'erotica'. There are some good stories though (some of them previously unpublished) -- LeGuin's "Unchosen Love"; Mary Rosenblum's "The Gardener"; Pat Cadigan's "She's Not There"; Maureen F. McHugh's funny and touching "In The Air"; and Michael Stanwick's "North of Diddy-Wah-Diddy", about a train ride to hell.

Killing Me Softly:Erotic Tales of Unearthly Love was the best book I have ever read. The author captured what true Love,Hate,Death and Life mean to people in every word that was written. This book captured my heart like no other in the world. It is truly a classic book of love stories.

4 out of 5 stars erotic, adult ghost stories.......1997-07-21

_Killing Me Softly_ edited by Gardner Dozois is a collection of short stories about love after death. Most of these stories are quite good - the adult equivalent of ghost stories with an erotic bent.

The authors represent a good cross-section of the fantasy, science fiction, and alternative fiction genres, and the collection sports some well-known names. Recommended for those who believe in the power of love after death and enjoy a good ghost story.

By now you've probably heard that antioxidants are good for you, but a growing number of researchers are beginning to believe that adequate or even more-than-adequate amounts are absolutely vital to our health and well-being. This book by James F. Balch, M.D., author of the bestselling Prescription for Nutritional Healing, describes a wide range of antioxidant substances in food and extracted into supplements that can help prevent or conquer illness and even slow the aging process itself. As Balch points out, when our bodies turn oxygen into energy the reaction creates damaging byproducts known as free radicals, which "eat away" at us almost as rust does metal. Antioxidants help keep free radicals from forming and eliminate those already in the body, putting the brakes on at least some of this long-term damage. But while many people are aware of the antioxidant value of vitamins such as C and E, there are also powerful free-radical-scavenging substances in a wide variety of products-- including fish oils, tree barks, herbs, wine, and tea, as well as colorful fruits and vegetables. Because antioxidants may be more effective in combination, Balch makes a good case for taking concentrated antioxidant supplements as well as eating a diverse diet. A few of the substances he mentions are controversial (and he's careful to provide brief cautions), but it wouldn't be surprising if many of the antioxidants he recommends eventually become mainstream tonics. --Ben Kallen

IN A NUTSHELL: WRITTEN IN A DUMBED-DOWN CONDESCENDING MANNER WITHOUT MUCH SUBSTANCE

Since the Author of this book is an M.D. I was rather shocked and disappointed with his style of writing which included making numerous unsubstantiated claims mixed in with very insulting and distracting humor. An earlier reviewer compared the text of this book with "reading the back of a cereal box" and sadly I must agree.

Also, the author has an annoying habit of quoting many other writers in the field, most often Dr. Michael Murray, which tended to reinforce my notion that one should be reading a different book on this very important and worthwhile topic.

There are obvious errors and ommisions within the text, the worst which is the author's constant compulsion for not referencing the results of the numerous studies that have been conducted and which do demonstrate the importance of anti-oxidants in our daily diets. Instead, he simply makes statements without any referencing. Somehow everything within this book is distilled down to anti-oxidants vs. free radicals which is an obvious oversimplification.

                        2 out of 5 stars Repetitive, un-referenced and narrow-minded.......2004-06-08

As a well-read reviewer on this subject, perhaps I am being overcritical. However, I found his testimony throughout the book that the only purpose of antioxidant consumption is to desotry fre radicals to be missing the point of good nutrition. He tries to extrapolate all benficial qualities of antioxidant rich food to their free radical scavenging abilities, which he does not back up with valid scientific sources. He neglects the vast epidemiological studies attributing better health from of consumption of antioxidant-rich foods because of their high fiber, unsaturdated fats, and low cholesterol.

I was also irked by his too-common slip-ups in seemingly basic biochemistry and toxicology. I understand his thesis that free radicals are one of the primary contributors to disease, but he tries to extend this theory to situations in which free radicals pale in comparison to other carcinogens in terms of their disease-promoting potential. For example, ciagrette smoke contains a group of scientifcally-proven very potent carcinogens, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, that he neglects entirely in explaining smoke's toxicity. Of course, he says that cigarette smoke is carcinogenic because of its radical producing chemicals, which he chooses not to name.

In addition, he mistakenly says that alpha lipoic acid is an amino acid that is an integral part of an antioxidant enzyme, when in fact alpha lipoic acid is a lipid (and antioxidant itself). Lastly, I was concerned with his suggestion that people take oral supplements of antioxidant enzymes to render free radicals harmless, as the HCl and proteases of our stomach and small intestine would surely destory any activity of these "enzymes" before they can can catalyze the intended reaction.

There are many claims throughout the book that are not backed by any scientific data, the majority of which I cannot argue against due to my incomplete knowledge of the subject. However, the fact that on several instances I found his science not only un-referenced, but also wrong, stopped me from finishing the book. I might as well have read the back of a cereal box, on which marketers attempt to persuade kids why vitamins are good for them (and henceforth their product).

For a more holistic and factual review of good nutrition, try "Diet for a New America" by John Robbins.

This book is a tell-all source for the person wanting to learn about antioxidants and/or free radical damage. 5 out of 5 stars Yep - Balch is right on target, again!.......2000-08-04

I couldn't agree more with the focus of Balch's book on Anti-Oxidants! We can no longer expect our food to contain enough of those wonderful supplements necessary for our bodies to sustain/prolong life in these stressful/toxic times. YES we need to eat well - cut out that fast food - to keep our everyday focus on being healthy, but unfortunately that isn't enough. If this book isn't enough to convince you (which I believe it is) access a site, PapaNature, and research further their documentation on anti-oxidants. They offer the same combinations as Balch recommends to his readership.
