Book Description
Eric Hoffer--one of America's most important thinkers and the author of The True Believer--lived for years as a Depression Era migratory worker. Self-taught, his appetite for knowledge--history, science, mankind--formed the basis of his insight to human nature. The Passionate State of Mind is a collection of timeless aphorisms taken from his brilliant writings.
Customer Reviews:
A Timeless Classic..........2004-05-31
"The Passionate State of Mind" was written by Eric Hoffer, a one-time Longshoreman, in 1954, fifty years ago, following the "True Believer" which gained much national recognition.
My suggestion to anyone interested would be to take "The Passionate State of Mind" to a park, a place on the the seashore, take some time, read, relax, and reflect on the meaning of the 280 aphorisms contained within.
One such paragraph reads: " An easygoing person is probably more accessible to the realization of eternity - the endless flow of life and death - than one who takes his prospects and duties overseriously. It is the overserious who are truly frivilous."
Or another is, simply: "Fear and Freedom are mutually exclusive."
I have no argument with either sentiment.
Anyway, my copy of "The Passionate State of Mind" is well-worn, and I'm always surprised that even though I may put it away, when I eventually get around to revisiting it, I always manage to find food for thought.
"The Passionate State of Mind" is something that recalls youthful ideals, and the ultimate objective of truth. It's worth a read.
A Brilliant Work.......2004-05-16
Hoffer's writings are crytsal clear, and a joy to read. This book contains a brillant set of aphorisms that illuminate the world we live in. Hoffer's insights cover the spectrum from everyday interactions to the psyche of the Islamic Fascist who is at war with us. Caution - Reading one of Hoffer's works will create a desire to read another.
A post graduate course in Dilbert.......2002-10-31
About fifteen years ago I took a copy of this book to work with me for a lunchtime read.
I still keep it here and I'm still absorbing it.
Hoffer profoundly illuminates the failings, foibles, and foolishness of human affairs, sometimes with dark wit and sometimes with pyrotechnics.
In it I always find aphorisms to describe any "workplace situation", and I use them liberally in letters, presentations, discussions and even responses to graffiti. Hoffer's insights have turned around many a situation for me.
The book gave me tremendous personal growth and a career boost as well.
Whether you're an evil HR director, or like myself just a workingman trying to navigate the waters of mid-life, this book will help you.

A brilliant follow-up to a classic.......2001-02-11
Eric Hoffer penned this book of aphorisms shortly after "The True Believer," undoubtably his masterpiece study on the psychology of mass movements and those who partake in them. This collection provides a similar challenge to the reader, as it takes poignant stabs into the human mind with Hoffer's trademark detachment.
At many points in reading this book, I had to stop and think about what one sentence had said, how others reflected in its mirror; indeed how I reflected in its mirror. It would take hours or even days before I could crack the book again and move on to the next selection. Many of the aphorisms remain ingrained in my head, and I often browse back through the book to reflect on what is there.
If you enjoyed "The True Believer," I believe you will duly enjoy "The Passionate State of Mind." If you are a lover of psychology/sociology, welcome to one of the classic books(and writers) of the 20th century. If you want a book that allows for intense reflection and self-examination, far more so than the hordes of so-called "self-help" books now available, this book can provide that and more. A great book by an all too forgotten penman.
Powerful statements to ponder and adjust to.......1999-05-10
Eric Hoffer is a thoughtful author, in the truest sense of the word. In his book, The Passionate State of Mind, Hoffer makes over two hundred deep and powerful statements to ponder and adjust to. I usually find that I read two or three of his aphorisms, put the book down, and spend several days evaluating my life with them. These "truisms" cover what motivates us to do the things we do, how we respond to others, and how to live life without catching on the usual snags. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a breath of fresh air in their thought life.

Although Sherlock Holmes, in Arthur Conan Doyle's original tales, only occasionally traveled much beyond London, he and his faithful chronicler, Dr. John Watson, have become regular globetrotters in Larry Millett's recent Holmes pastiches. The first four of these novels found the pair hieing off to Minnesota (not coincidentally, the author's home state), while The Disappearance of Sherlock Holmes sends them to New York and Chicago in 1900, one frustrating step behind conspirators bent on framing them for kidnapping and murder.
Two years have passed since Holmes (in Doyle's "The Adventure of the Dancing Men") captured Abe Slaney, a Chicago gangster who murdered the husband of Elsie Cubitt, his childhood love. Now, Elsie has gone missing, and clues suggest that Slaney--though reportedly dead--is behind the snatch. Goaded by a bogus ransom demand and an enigmatic spiritualist, and perhaps also by the great detective's uncharacteristic affection for the Widow Cubitt, Holmes and Watson commence a lively chase that will lead them from a slain Liverpool strumpet to a foggy standoff at a Manhattan church, a death-defying train ride across Pennsylvania, and a climactic shootout at a Windy City fraternal hall. Millett's veteran readers will identify the malign genius behind this conspiracy well before the last page, and they may be disappointed with the minor role played here by Minneapolis saloonkeeper and series regular Shadwell Rafferty. Yet the author adroitly captures the spirit of the Holmes canon, while adding to it a modern urgency of plot and an infectious curiosity about the historical sites around which this tale's action occurs. If this novel doesn't surpass Millett's Sherlock Holmes and the Ice Palace Murders for eccentric intrigue, it certainly bristles with shocks and twists enough to curl Queen Victoria's hair. --J. Kingston Pierce
Book Description
Sherlock Holmes Disappears, Foul Play Suspected reads a New York headline. So begins the fifth mystery in Larry Millett's series, which takes Holmes on a chase across continents and on a labyrinthine journey into a dangerous and sinister mind. Only with the assistance of his large-hearted and amply proportioned old friend, Irish saloonkeeper Shadwell Rafferty, will the score be settled and justice delivered.
A letter, written in a secret cipher he recognizes all too well, tells the celebrated sleuth that Abe Slaney, the vicious murderer he once captured after a duel of wits, seems to have risen from the grave. And there is no time to waste. The beautiful woman for whom Slaney once killed is being held for ransom. But when it transpires that he-or someone-has presumed to impersonate Holmes himself, the great sleuth begins to glimpse a darker business than he expected. In desperate pursuit from London to New York to Chicago-from a foggy rendezvous in Lower Manhattan to a wild foray with Rafferty into the Windy City's underworld-Holmes soon has cause to wonder whether he will escape his captors or be framed for the crime himself.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing!.......2007-03-10
Authoring any Sherlock Holmes pastiche is a thankless job. Any originality would be critically assessed (more often than not plainly criticized) while truthful renderings in the style of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would be sneered upon as another 'fake'. There have been some efforts that have assumed stellar positions in not only Sherlockian literature, but also in other areas, e.g. Nicholas Meyer's "Seven Percent Solution" and Michel Dibdin's "The Last Sherlock Holmes Story". Larry Millett, in his Minnesota-n Holmesiana, had begun auspiciously, with the adventure concerning the Red Demon that was immensely readable despite some obvious displacements felt by all. But the quality of his works worsened rapidly, finally culminating in "The Disappearance of Sherlock Holmes".
This novel would stagger any follower of the canon not only in terms of its subject (pastiches thrive upon controversy), but also its style. Pedantically speaking, the following 'short-comings' may be noted:
1. Watson's narrative has been interrupted on too many occasions; in the process the charm of Victorian english has been severely compromised.
2. Over-enthusiasm for adventures was never the forte of Sherlock Holmes who detested jumping to any conclusion/situation without viewing and reviewing the facts time and again (all those noxious tobacco smoke!), but Millett's Holmes literally monkeys around everywhere.
3. Essential component of any Victorian literature has to be prudence and conservative attitude towards sex (no matter how hypocritic we may find it today), but this novel becomes pretty ribald at every opportunity. In the process Holmes falls in love headlong and indulges in unbelievable stupidity (how else can these incidents be explained)!
4. Mary Robinson, who had been portrayed as 'Irene Adler with a twist' in the 'Red Demon' story, has become rather Moriartisque in this novel, probably under the influence of the TV Series Law & Order: Criminal Intent where the super-villain Nicole Wallace is the nemesis of Robert Goren (modelled after Holmes). This makes the novel even more convoluted and far-fetched.
Overall, "abandon all hope, ye who enter here". Don't complain later.
Wow! A page turner.......2004-07-04
I enjoyed the earlier books in this series and this one was especially good. Same day I received it, I read far into the night and finished it the following morning. I like these books because I'm a lifelong Sherlock Holmes fan and this one featured Holmes from the beginning in an absorbing story in which he was impersonated, traveled from England, to NYC and and then to Chicago and even was involved in a bit of a romance. Rafferty and other characters from previous books made appearances in an auxillary capacity, which suits me fine.
Mr. Millett's ability to capture the voice of Watson (as created by Doyle) is the most appealing aspect of this tale.
Interesting.......2004-01-08
My reaction to this book was interesting. I have a tendancy to drop a book after the first couple of chapters if I don't find myself drawn in. If I am drawn in, I'll finish the book in a couple days. I read The Disappearance of Sherlock Holmes over several weeks. I didn't feel the urge to read it all at once, but I didn't feel like tossing it all together. Millett's description are near perfection in my opinion, although as another reviewer commented, the footnotes were bothersome. His character development showed me another, believable side of Sherlock Holmes. I kept reading, and enjoyed the end in Chicago the most.
Finally, more Holmes, less Rafferty.......2004-01-01
"Disappearance" is a big improvement over "Secret Alliance". Despite the title, Holmes is present for much of the book. Even better, Rafferty appears very little, and Minnesota is barely mentioned. Unfortunately, Holmes and Watson are apart for much of the story. The villain's conspiracy against Holmes is far-fetched at times, but overall the book is a pretty good story, which could have been better had the author cut down on excessive details and footnotes that do nothing to move the story along.
The Game is Afoot, My Dear Shadwell!.......2003-12-02
Probably the best of Larry Millet's stories (and the others have been good!) I really loved it when Mary finally got hers! That female Moriarty really deserved what she got! However, I suspect that Millet will resurect her in his next novel. Ah, well, she'll join a long list of villans that have returned from the dead including Moriarty himself, Fu Manchu, The Joker, etc. Four resounding Sherlock stars from the Blade! Larry Millet, you go, bro!

Dickens and Holmes.......2007-07-26
I must confess to never having read the unfinished "Mystery of Edwin Drood", so I really don't know if the characters met in this book, and their actions as described by varous narrators, are true to the original story. All I can say is that this author does a rather good job in weaving together all of the incidents from the Dickens book into his, and then departing from there, giving the case over into the capable hands of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson. There's a lot of tooing and froing, and in the end the "mystery" appears to be solved. My only quibble with the book is that the solution appears too easily obtained, and not really adequately explained either by Holmes, or the author. Anyway, it's a short book and useful for passing a few pleasant hours wirh our favorite British consulting detective.
Highly recommended!.......2006-05-27
When Sherlock Holmes gets a visit from a strange old man who tells him of a disappearance and possible murder, Holmes agrees to take on the case. However, when he and Dr. Watson journey to the scene of the events, they are surprised to find out that the disappearance happened not one year ago (in 1894), but 25 years ago! But, there is a deep mystery here that only Holmes can get to the bottom of, and nothing will dissuade him from learning just what happened to Edwin Drood!
In 1870, Charles Dickens died with his last book unfinished. In the Mystery of Edwin Drood, a young man disappeared under mysterious circumstances, and another young man is accused of murder. In 1991, author and historian Peter Rowland decided that the way to solve this literary mystery by turning literature's greatest sleuth loose on it - Sherlock Holmes.
Overall, I found this to be a very interesting story. Mr. Rowland did a good job of catching the feel of the original Sherlock Holmes story, which makes the book good for any Holmes fan (such as myself). My one complaint here is that the author slipped in a quick paranormal scene, which is quite out of keeping with the Holmes canon.
But, that said, I did enjoy this book, and am very glad that I read it. Is it necessary to read Dickens' original story before reading this book? No, it's not necessary, the story is entirely self-contained. So, let me just say that I enjoyed this book, and I highly recommend it to all fans of Sherlock Holmes.

Customer Reviews:
A Review of Golden Books "Barbie of Swan Lake".......2005-11-22
This is a fairly nice book. It has flaws but we feel forced to give it a four star review because the flaws don't really seem to affect how much our children like this book.
"Barbie of Swan Lake" uses artwork from the video (which was nicely done, btw). Being 20 something pages long (not counting title pages and cover pages) it does not contain every scene from the movie, but in general the author does a good job in summarizing the plot.
Flaws
-- the pictures are fuzzy in places though my children have never pointed it out.
-- the story is a little hurried at the end. Pictorially, they go right from the palace scene where the prince has pledge his love to the disguised Odile, to the forest where the prince and Odette have been laid low by Rothgart. And the next picture which is the last, is of the wedding party.
That said, if your child has seen the movie this sequence will probably not be a problem.
Four Stars. Good Read-aloud story. Though a little hurried at the end, the book does a good job of covering the story. The artwork is fuzzy in places but children don't seem to mind. And in general, this book with it's familiar story keeps childrens' attention, and anything that promotes reading in our house is welcome -LOL. Enjoy.

Refreshing Read.......2007-09-30
I heartily recommend this book, if for no other reason than I'm sick to death of gorgeous heroines. For once, here is a historical novel which has a realistic heroine that I could understand and sympathize with. The couple has issues and it is interesting to watch how they resolve them and to find that the hero, Andrew, can get past appearances to what lies beneath. This is similar in many ways to Georgette Heyer's books like 'The Convenient Marriage' and others where the focus is on developing a relationship rather than just empty sex with two doll-like characters.
I just hope there are more books in the offing like this one, where you can read a story about real people in a historically accurate novel. Bravo!
Sweet read.......2007-09-10
A young woman, Jenny, who perceives herself as an ugly duckling is chosen to be the wife of a handsome and arrogant viscount by his father. Unwilling to accept that his wife is actually ideal for him, he eventually leaves her alone to further his own ambitions not knowing that he's left a pregnant wife behind. Jenny's struggle to deal with her loneliness and her responsibilities is compelling and become more so when an older woman takes her under her wing and transforms Jenny into the woman she was meant to be. When the viscount returns, he faces a double surprise and must work his way back into the family he's left behind. Golden Swan is a delightful, traditional regency!

Finally - The "Mind's" Effect on Weight.......2004-07-14
I am following Dr. Pescatore's plan and have lost ten pounds in two weeks. It's not a miracle, it's not easy, but it is the right tactic for me, personally. The eating program is basically low carb, but also allows some servings of melons, beans, whole grain bread, etc. twice/week. An evening snack of refried beans with cheese and sour cream tasted as good as a dish of ice cream. Also, my body requires portion control and this plan deals with portion size. Not fun but necessary.I am succeeding at long last but not just because I'm sticking to the right foods and the right portions but because I'm dealing with my mental attitude and history towards food. Some people may be able to just follow a list of foods to eat and do well. Not me. But keeping a journal and reading Dr. P's "mind-medicines" daily have done wonders for my acceptance, discipline, understanding, and motiviation. I can actually see myself five months from now as a slim person. Truthfully, that never happened before. I read sections of this book over and over again. I identify with many scenarios. It's the tool that I needed and I hope that others will be as satisfied as I am. To address earlier comments, he suggests organic eggs, doesn't demand them, I don't measure my condiments to the spoonful and I don't take all the supplements he recommends, I use other plans' recipes as well as his and I am losing and shrinking and feeling good. I believe that the psychological aspect of this program is the key. For those of us who have had a weight issue for most of our lives, it's a blessing. Try it.
Great diet for vegetarians.......2003-09-17
I followed this diet and it has been the only thing I have tried in years that worked for me, and it is FAST. This program has a special vegetarian section where you can have beans, and some oatmeal. It's not such a low carb diet that you lose pep or get insane cravings. I also found the mind body exercises extremely valuable. He writes with the wisdom of a person who is on the path with you -- he fought his own battle with weight.
I've been on it for 3.5 months and have lost 2 sizes. That may not seem fast to you, but I am post menopausal and usually have to exert enormous effort to drop any weight. This has been steady, and I feel comfortable on it. Amazing!
A Great Diet.......2002-04-14
My husband and I are on our 8th day of this diet and we are both feeling fantastic. It may seem complicated at first and the weighing and measuring may seem daunting but just wade right in and it all makes sense and becomes habit very quickly. There are some delicious recipes and it is an amazing thing to sit down to meals that are cooked with butter and cream and mayonaise and all those things that we have denied ourselves for years and to actually be loosing weight. I recommend this book compleatly.
Thin for Good by Fred Pescatore, M.D........2001-09-14
Dr. Pescastore's unique bent on low carb dieting resides in his linking of the mind and body with his "Mind-Body Medicines": daily thoughts to spur on your reserve in the diet process.
This book had a lot of good information, but overall I felt it would make life way too complicated to try to implement the diet as Dr. Pescatore laid it out. There were so many rules and measurements to make of everything you put in your mouth, that it would be much easier just to give up eating entirely. In this fast paced world, I really feel that most people just don't have the time or desire to go to this much trouble to lose weight and regain health, when there are many other books out there that tell you how to accomplish the same thing in a much easier format.
Another non-selling point for me was the amount of different dietary supplements he encourages you to take daily. This diet could get very expensive very quickly.
