I agree, this was TERRIBLE!.......2007-07-11
Everything about this book was painful. The dialogue was aweful, every twist in the plot was completely obvious, even the characters names were cheesy. Do not waste your time.
Probaby the worst book I've ever read!.......2007-04-01
I love to read all different types of books, and I unapologetically sometimes enjoy a "light" mystery or romance, especially for a vacation or beach read. Howver, there is a difference between "light" and downright ridiculous! The plot had so many holes and inconsistencies that it almost seemed as if it were written by a teenager as a first attempt at being an author. The only reason I gave it 1 star is that there is no way to choose "zero" star rating. It is the only book I have ever read in my life that I promptly threw in the garbage.
This was my first Fern Michaels book, and will certainly be my last!
Just awful - can't believe I bothered to finish it.......2006-06-29
Amazon should offer a choice for zero stars, perhaps even negative stars, for books such as this. Thank God I didn't pay for it! I found it at a beach house, read the list of Fern Michaels' previous books and reviews, and had some time to kill with a light read to start the summer. But this read was not just light - it was buoyant! The sophomoric plot and banal style became like a train wreck - I was at times fascinated simply by how awful it was. The main character develops the ability to read people's thoughts, but only sporadically - when the author can't think of any other way to move the plot! I kept waiting to see if there would a surprise, a twist, ANYTHING to justify a New York Times bestselling author had written it. Nothing, just more of the same. I tossed it in the trash so no other hapless person would be similarly misled by it. I have never written a review before, but felt I HAD to warn unsuspecting readers. I finished it by skimming to assure myself that it was more of the same. It was. I am angry that I wasted a single minute of my life on this garbage. Don't make the same mistake.
The Boring Neighbor.......2006-06-15
This was my first Fern Michael book, probably my last. I hate when you can see the ending from the first chapter. The main characters just meet and fall in love...the never even have normal discussion. Also, I will never forget their names, Lucy and Wylie. You know why? Because they say them over and over. People just do not talk like that. Try having a conversation with your husband or friend, anyone you know well. Do you say their name in every sentence? Do they say your name 20 times during the conversation? Nope. It is very stange and annoying to read.
the nosey neighbor.......2006-03-15
I haven't received the book as yet. So I haven;t read it yet. therefore I can't form an opinon.

Book Description
Rita Mae Brown and her inseparable co-author, that fabulous feline Sneaky Pie Brown, are together again in this triple-threat collection of mystery and manners, southern-style. In fact, the first three novels in the Browns' Mrs. Murphy bestselling mystery series are reprinted here in their entirety. It's murder with a touch of whimsy, all set in the cozy hamlet of Crozet, Virginia. Meet Harry's friends, neighbors...and suspects--folks like notorious society vamp Boom Boom Craycroft in Rest in Pieces, or the nice Miranda Hogendobber in Murder at Monticello, and get a good taste of Brown's wickedly observant take on manners below the Mason-Dixon line. Cat lovers, mystery aficionados, and anyone who might like an armchair visit to a delightful old town down South, is sure to enjoy these witty, cleverly-plotted tales of suspense.
Customer Reviews:
Great book! I especially like the animal communication........2007-05-21
This is a great book. Well written and an easy read. I think this book would be great for all ages, teen and up, who likes a good mystery. The animals communicate with each other and with other animals throughout the stories. You definately want to read the books in order, though. One story refers to the ones before it. All in all, I'm glad I bought them and am looking forward to finishing this one and getting the next book of 3 stories in the series.

3 Great Books Together!.......2006-06-03
In "Wish You Were Here", we meet Mary Minor Haristeen (aka Harry) and Mrs. Murphy (a tiger cat) and Tee Tucker (a Welsh corgi). Harry is recently divorced and a postmistress in Crozet, Virginia a very small town. She has grown up there, and finds it difficult adjusting to life as a divorcee' in such a small town. Half of the town is on her side, the other half on the side of her ex, Fair Haristeen, a beloved local vet. It also doesn't help that Harry is constantly seeing Boom Boom Craycroft, the other woman who broke up her marriage. But working in the town's post office with her pets each day does offer its own diversions. One such diversion is reading post cards...something Harry has always done. When 2 prominent business people are killed after receiving graveyard postcards reading "wish you were here", Harry realizes there is a pattern to the killing. And when a good friend receives one, Harry springs into action to stop the killer in his/her tracks.
In "Rest In Pieces", the animals once again play a huge role in solving a murder. The main character, Mary Minor Haristeen (aka Harry), along with her two animal friends Mrs. Murphy (a gray tiger cat) and Tucker (a corgi) lead the way. When newcomer, Blair Bainbridge, rolls into town a lot of folks in Crozet, Virginia believe that trouble rolled in with him. The handsome bachelor turns many female heads, and Harry tries to convince herself that she has sworn off men since her divorce. When pieces of a dead body are found on Blair's property, tongues start to wag. And when more pieces of the body are discovered during the Harvest Ball, a tragic event from Blair's past comes back to haunt him. Has this "Yankee" brought murder to this sleepy small-town?
Having just finished reading the first book in the series, I admit it was much easier for me to follow the dialogue between the animals in this second installment. At first, I had a difficult time following the discussions between the animals, as it adds to the already large cast of characters. However, I adore the way the animals speak to one another! Their antics are charming, and I find that it adds a lot to this great series.
The mystery had me guessing until the end. Normally, I am able to figure out the mysteries pretty quickly (as many cozies give a lot of clues), but I was surprised at the ending. This is a great series, and I look forward to reading the extensive collection of books by this author (and Sneaky Pie, of course!).
In "Murder at Monticello", a body has been discovered in the slave quarters of the home of Thomas Jefferson. Since Jefferson has been dead for 170 years, it is impossible to question him about the man found dead from a blow to the dead. And when another recently murdered body is discovered, it becomes apparent that someone wants the secrets that have been buried with the body to remain so. Coming into question is the practice of slavery, and the descendants of Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson had been rumored to have fathered a child by one of his slaves, and it appears that the man found murdered may have been also been involved with one of the slaves. The citizens of Crozet band together to prove that their beloved Jefferson had nothing to do with the murder or cover-up, and while doing so they unearth secrets that have been hidden in the town for over a century.
I have become a big fan of this series, and enjoy the banter between the animals. The relationships between the members of the town have been evolving, and I like the way that Harry is loved and embraced by the people who have known her all of her life. She works hard, cares for her animals, and genuinely cares for the town and its residents. I look forward to future books in the series, and am hopeful to see more of Blair as a potential love interest for Harry.
If you like the KoKo and Yum Yum series by Lilian Jackson Braun, give this book a try. Enjoy!
Lighthearted and fun!.......2004-08-15
This is a great introduction to the Sneaky Pie Brown series, especially if you are like me and absolutely HAVE to read a series in order. These are really fun, quick reads. The cats and dog have some serious attitude, and the citizens of Crozet, VA are people you would want for neighbors and friends, other than the odd murderer inhabiting the tiny town. To a certain extent, these stories are similar to that old show Murder, She Wrote, because you just wonder how Harry constantly becomes involved in murder investigations in an otherwise peaceful town. You would think people would start avoiding her to save their own lives. I only gave it four stars because the mysteries are too easy to figure out!
On my top ten list!.......2004-08-06
Oh gosh, I don't even know how to start. I picked up Claws and Effect, a later book in the series, at my school's library last year and within minutes of starting it I was gobbling it up! I mean, murder, southern gentry, small-town gossip, and talking animals!!!! HOW GREAT CAN LIFE GET!? AND the dog is a CORGI *I am a considerably HUGE corgi fan* Written with wit and whimsy, Rita Mae Brown is my third favorite author. I am currently finishing "Murder She Meowed" (I read them all out of order) and it is my favorite Mrs. Murphy mystery yet!!! Hilarious! A MUST READ!!!

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Decent enough crossover story, as Ghost and Hellboy get in each other's way in one sense, and fail to in another.
One of My Top Ten Reasons to Avoid Falling Through Walls.......2003-01-14
In 1939, Arcadia bore witness to a murder carried out by a crimeboss and his pet ax because of pilferage form his almighty coffers. The only problem was that death didn't stop poor Vinnie from mocking the "boss," and his laughter echoed on even past the thresholds of demise. To help remedy this little predicament, the "boss" enlisted the aid of a Dr. Herbert Izzo to make it stop. Well, after Herbert's job was done in a most Lovecraftian fashion, he was repaid in the most special of ways, joining the man he could still hear laughing inside a brick-and-mortar encased tomb left inside an apartment building. Fast forward to the present, where Hellboy investigates the presence of ex-reporter turned vengeful spirit, Elisa Cameron, and the two stumble on this scene of the past that has never been laid to rest. And that's when the oddities that only Mike Mignola can create are truly brought spectacularly to the surface, meshing the woes of Hellboy with the plight of the Ghost in memorable fashion.
Returning to his Arcadian home away from home, Mike Mignola paints something that his Will to Power days could never conceive; a portrait of Hellboy spawned perfection in the minimalist light and shadow play that soaks all of his Hellboy projects in both art and story. Originally a two comic series, it has the luxury of not continuing on too long or ending too soon, giving you something that is memorable because of the mind behind it and because of the way its presented by his support cast.
Yes, Hellboy and the hand are back for a nice one-two you wouldn't want to miss. For older fans, its something worth embracing and for newer readers its a good read after starting in the collected Hellboy TPB sagas.

Written with the intermediate to advanced C programmer in mind, Mastering Algorithms with C delivers a no-nonsense guide to the most common algorithms needed by real-world developers.
The highlight of the book has to be its concise and readable C functions for all the algorithms presented here, including basics like linked lists, stacks to trees, graphs, and sorting/searching algorithms. The C functions that implement these algorithms are clearly printed and remarkably easy to read. You can use this sample code directly or adapt it into your C/C++ code.
Although mathematical concepts like Big-O notation are discussed, the authors don't get bogged down in the computer science theory surrounding algorithms. Instead, they present the most tried-and-true algorithms available today in an efficient format. Besides introducing each algorithm, they describe how each is used in computing today, along with a short demo application. Some of these samples are quite low-level, such as a virtual memory manager implemented with linked lists. Most examples are more of general interest, such as a graphing example that counts network hops.
Each section ends with questions and answers about how the algorithms work, along with references to other algorithms (both in the book and from other sources). The authors concentrate on the most useful algorithms available today and don't try to cover every available variation. Busy readers will appreciate the intelligent selection--and efficient presentation--used here.
There are a number of books on C algorithms, but Master Algorithms with C is one of the most concise and immediately useful. It's a perfect choice for the working C/C++ programmer who's in a hurry to find just the right algorithm for writing real-world code. --Richard Dragan
Topics covered: Algorithm efficiency, pointer basics, arrays, recursion, Big-O Notation, linked lists, stacks, queues, sets, hash tables, trees and B-trees, searching, heaps and priority queues, graphs, sorting and searching algorithms, numerical methods, data compression, Huffman coding, LZ77, data encryption, DES, RSA, graph algorithms, minimum spanning trees, geometric algorithms, and convex hulls.
Book Description
There are many books on data structures and algorithms, and some books laying out useful libraries of C functions, but this book aims to give you a unique combination of theoretical background and working code. In offering robust solutions for everyday programming tasks, Mastering Algorithms with C avoids the abstract style of most classic data structures and algorithms texts but still provides all the information you need to understand the purpose and use of common programming techniques. Implementations, as well as interesting, real-world examples of each data structure and algorithm, are shown in the text. Full source code appears on the accompanying disk. Using both a programming style and a writing style that are exceptionally clean, Kyle Loudon shows you how to use such essential data structures as lists, stacks, queues, sets, trees, heaps, priority queues, and graphs. He shows you how to use algorithms for sorting, searching, numerical analysis, data compression, data encryption, common graph problems, and computational geometry. He also describes the relative efficiency of all implementations. The compression and encryption chapters not only give you working code for reasonably efficient solutions, they explain concepts in an approachable manner for people who never have had the time or expertise to study them in depth. Anyone with a basic understanding of the C language can use this book. In order to provide maintainable and extendible code, an extra level of abstraction (such as pointers to functions) is used in examples where appropriate. Understanding that these techniques may be unfamiliar to some programmers, Loudon explains them clearly in the introductory chapters. Contents include:
- Pointers
- Recursion
- Analysis of algorithms
- Data structures (lists, stacks, queues, sets, hash tables, trees, heaps, priority queues, graphs)
- Sorting and searching
- Numerical methods
- Data compression
- Data encryption
- Graph algorithms
- Geometric algorithms
Customer Reviews:
Probably OK.......2007-07-16
The book is probably OK, but there are better, much better ones on the subject. I highly recommend looking at "The Algorithm Design Manual", just search Amazon and you'll find it.
good, concise algorithm book ruined by comment.......2004-12-13
compare to most algorithm/data structure books out there, this book is not as complete as those, but it's much easier to read, and diagrams in this book is well drawn and much eaiser to follow. Why would I only give it 3 stars? One thing really ruined this book - obviously the publisher/editor/author try to increase the total page number by putting ridiculously big comment block in sample code(single line comments takes about 5 lines, all surrounded by '*' and spaces) This made the sample code difficult to read, imagine a 5 line function has to be printed in 2 or 3 pages.
Good book, but HORRIBLE CODING STYLE!!!.......2004-11-09
The book contents is good, the algorithms presented are more or less well explained and the implementeations themselves are not bad (but could be better).
Unfortunately this book has 2 mayor problems:
Sometimes you need an implementation of an algorithm for which you already know the inner-workings, just need quick code instead of reinvening the wheel yourself... the book will not allways give you that, it will sometimes build an algorithm based on previous ones! Darn!, I am supposed to go straight to the point I want and get the code without having to read a couple of previous sections.
Second and worst of all is the coding style this guy has. I don't know what the other reviwer that said that the code is great programs in but certainly not in C. The author of the book simply has the worst style ever... look at the comments, a one line comment surrounded by a box!!! give-me-a-break!... where did he learn this? He should read a book about style, perhaps read Code Complete by Steve McConnel or something before attempting to write code. Anyway this is just one of the many style flaws this book has.
If I could I would return it, after all, you can get mostly any implementation from the internet (I had to do that or would have wasted lots of time and... time is money).
If well written, the book would have been 1/2 its size and then it would have been good.
Why 3 stars? Well, in spite of the poor programming style and bad presentation of some algorithms, if you have time and patience, you get someting out of the book. Just don't use the coding style he uses... if you try that at work you would be fired or at least laughed at.
Not worth your time or money.......2003-04-17
To be fair and honest, I have not read this entire book and that is because I've read far better ones. If you are interested in this topic (and if you're a programmer or computer scientist, you should be), look to Robert Sedgewick's excellent "Algorithms in C" in two volumes, or "Mastering Algoritms" by Cormen, Leiserson, Rivest, and Stein. While the algorithms in Cormen, etc.'s book are not in C, they are in a pseudo language that easy to convert to C. I'm really, really glad I looked this book over before flushing my (limited) money away.
pretty concise and covers enough ground.......2002-07-27
Sure, we all have learnt algorithms back in school. We know the fundamentals, we can talk about them, no sweat. But when it comes the time to actually write out an algorithm in C, we all struggle like George W writing SAT. That's why an algorithm book with real useable sample codes is very useful. O'Reilly has a good reputation for pumping out reference books, but there are, inevitably, hits and misses in the series. This volume is a hit. It covers most frequently used everyday algorithms without going into some obscure and generally useless NP-class problems. Full example codes are given on a floopy for easy porting.
