I love the Myrtles Plantation. This was a great book to find out what really happens in this haunted house. It makes me want to reserve a room. Good ghost story.

Really great book! It only took me maybe a week to finish the book and there are some really scarey moments. Loved it!!!!

3 out of 5 stars He was HOW OLD?.......2007-07-17

I liked this book. Like the previous reviewer said, it was a fast fun read - at times unbelievable - but interesting. OK, here is my issue. In the book she has a friend Hamp. Hamp dies shortly after looking at the photograph someone took of him with balls of light forming the year 1967 above his head, which turns out to be his year of birth according to the author. Per the timeline she purchased the house in 1980, and Hamp passed the second year she lived there. SO - do the math - Hamp was 15 years OLD? Understand that in the book this character is detailed as an imposing but gentle giant of a MAN that is a very close friend and spiritual advisor to her, but based on her dates he was a kid. Anyway. This and a few other seeming falsehoods in the book do stand out, but overall it is well written and entertaining. I feel very sorry for all she had to endure at the hands of her husband though. Such a jerk!

5 out of 5 stars Good read!.......2007-06-16

I really enjoyed this book. I thought I would have been scared but it really just fascinated me enough to make me want to visit the Myrtles. I think this book would make a great movie! I really felt for her and what she had to go through to run the Inn. I couldn't put it down.

1 out of 5 stars Fiction not Fact.......2007-02-15

This book, like the Amityville Horror, was sensationalized to sell and, apparently, readers were not disappointed.

Although The Myrtles is advertised as the most haunted house in the US in which at least 10 people were murdered, records indicate only one person was murdered inside the house.

Chloe, the mistreated slave mistress who wears a green turban to conceal her missing ear, is the invention of people who owned the house in the early 1970s. In GHOSTS ALONG THE MISSISSIPPI, published in 1948, the ghost in the green turban is described as that of a French governess who had lost an ear to frostbite while working in Canada, and family records confirm such a governess was employed at The Myrtles.

Although oleander is a deadly poisonous plant occasionally utilized by murderers, no such poisonings took place at The Myrtles. This, too, was an invention of the people who changed the green-turbaned governess into Chloe, the slave.

This is not to say The Myrtles isn't haunted. The French governess may still haunt the house along with a few other spirits. But I would think the most active spirit would be that of Judge Woodruff who is angry about his good name being maligned by modern-day sensation seekers.

Regardless of all the hoopla about The Myrtles, it is not even the most haunted house in Louisiana, let alone in the US. Destrehan Plantation has several real, not manufactured, spirits and is more likely the most haunted house in Louisiana.

4 out of 5 stars English, first language, it is not.......2007-09-05

The previous reviewer is correct in that this is a huge tomb. However, since my purpose is to learn Blind Signal Decomposition, I will try to read another book first. I want to know one method before learning all possible methods.

Be warned -- there are many run-on sentences in this book. The authors like parenthetical expressions, as do I, but I'm not writing a book.

I find it difficult to read, because I have to keep trying to figure out what the author meants to say, instead of what they wrote.

It might just be me, but when I read about "dynamicAL systems" (as in Romeo and Juliet is Romantical), it breaks my concentration. Another problem I find is, "This is equal WITH that."

Oddly, the version I am reading states was "reprinted with corrections on April 2003, and Oct 2005". Yet is still has enough grammatical mistakes and very long sentences, to make reading difficult for me. I am glad I don't have the first printing.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2003-08-25

    Book Description

Blind Signal Separation (BSS) deals with recovering (filtered versions of) source signals from an observed mixture thereof. The term `blind' relates to the fact that there are no reference signals for the source signals and also that the mixing system is unknown. This book presents a new method for blind signal separation, which is developed to work on microphone signals.
Acoustic Echo Cancellation (AEC) is a well-known technique to suppress the echo that a microphone picks up from a loudspeaker in the same room. Such acoustic feedback occurs for example in hands-free telephony and can lead to a perceived loud tone. For an application such as a voice-controlled television, a stereo AEC is required to suppress the contribution of the stereo loudspeaker setup. A generalized AEC is presented that is suited for multi-channel operation.
New algorithms for Blind Signal Separation and multi-channel Acoustic Echo Cancellation are presented. A background is given in array signal processing methods, adaptive filter theory, and fast filtering in the frequency domain.
The included CD-ROM can be played using any compact disc player to play the simulation results that are described in the text. When inserted into a computer, it furthermore gives Matlab implementations of the new algorithms along with audio data with which to experiment. This makes the book suited to researchers, engineers, and university students, who want to get acquainted with these emerging fields.

Steven Gould's Blind Waves is one of those books that makes you hold your breath a lot. This SF thriller takes place along what's left of the Texas Gulf coast after melting Antarctic ice has drowned much of the world. In New Galveston, a floating city, our plucky heroine Patricia Beeman uses her submarine to do salvage and inspection work. But when she stumbles upon a sunken ship full of freshly dead immigrants, she gets tangled in a dangerous web of politics, hatred, and corruption. Enter Commander Thomas Becket of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (now an armed force bigger than the Navy). Patricia and Thomas band together to beat the bad guys, and the adventure that follows delivers on all counts. Plenty of tense underwater action and zingy plot twists will keep thriller fans turning pages, while snappy dialogue, a delightfully budding romance, and homages to Shakespeare and Dorothy L. Sayers add literary flair. --Therese Littleton

    Book Description

The author of Jumper returns with a near-future SF novel, set in an America whose coastline has been drowned by melting Antarctic ice.In the world where hundreds of millions of people have been displaced from their homes by the Deluge--a hundred-foot-rise in sea level from melting ice caps--Partricia Beenan is lucky. She is still an American citizen with the right to live on the continent, unlike so many "wetfoots" whose homes lie deep under the waves or the refugees from nations now completely under water. But Patricia's father chose to live on a floating city of New Galveston, instead of following his congresswomen wife to Washington, and go into the underwater salvage business. Now, several years after his death, it's Patricia's business and her city. She's a wealthy woman, on the city council, well known to local INS commander and the New Galveston police. But none of that will help Patricia when she stumbles across a recently sunken freighter that has dozens of bodies chained up in its hold and clear evidence that it has been fired upon by an INS ship.Patricia's evidence of a rogue operation within the INS brings her together with Thomas Beckett, a government investigator assigned to the case. Romance blossoms while they pursue and are pursued by the killers, into the heart of the conspiracy.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good read.......2007-02-28

I was afraid this was going to be a "global warming" politics book, since the premise is that the ice caps have melted and wiped out the coastal areas of the world. But in reality it is a "whodunnit" with an interesting scenario in an alternate near-future.

It is also an unlikely love story, which I felt the book dwelled on more than it needed to (for what I assume is the intended audience anyway) and also distracting was the rather gratuitous use of the Spanish language without translation. I'm cool with the usage, it adds to the book - but making me try to figure out what was said via context was distracting.

On to the good parts of the review. The book starts off at a pretty fast pace, and you are quickly drawn in to the mystery. It has a fairly large cast of characters that are easily kept up with due to the skillful writing style. The end is not predictable, and fairly interesting.

I prefer Reflex to this book, but if you like Reflex this book will probably appeal to you as well.

    5 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2006-04-30

Stephen Gould has written some of my favorite books, including Jumper and Wildside. Both of these are considered `young adult' fiction, of for no other reason but that their protagonists are all `young adults', and the themes revolve around growing up kinds of things.

Blind Waves deals with adults, adult themes-though nothing particularly dark or explicit-and tackles some global near-future issues, in particular the consequences of global warming and rising sea levels. It doesn't spend much time analyzing or agonizing over the things that led to this state of affairs, but just sets the story within that context and spins out a cool yarn about intrigue and dastardly machinations among those policing illegal immigration in the flooded southern US. Plus there's a love story between the two main protagonists; which is kind of at the heart of it all and provides the thread that holds it all together.

I just like Blind Waves. It's the kind of book you re-read when you're not in the mood to tackle anything new and potentially problematic, and you just want something light, and yet not shallow and definitely entertaining.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but no "Jumper".......2005-08-08

I am a big fan of "Jumper", "Wildside", and "Helm", and in "Blind Waves" Steven Gould again shows his talent for world-building. In the near future, much of the US is underwater due to rising sea levels and its population now lives on floating islands around the new coast. Consequently, the INS has become its most feared policing body. As in "Jumper" and "Wildside", the protagonists are trying to untangle a mystery while unsure whether they should be running to or from the authorities. However, Gould breaks from his previous novels' pattern and tries to write from a female perspective - with less than stellar results. Gone are the complicated, sympathetic, and insecure protagonists of his previous work, replaced with a carbon-copy Strong American Woman and a cookie-cutter romance telegraphed from page one. While the mystery itself is a page-turner and the world he has imagined are fascinating, witnessing both from the main character's perspective renders them much blander than in Gould's previous novels.

4 out of 5 stars Fun story - Very engaging.......2003-07-26

Enjoyed this story. Made me want to go build a min-sub from cast-off parts and go exploring.

I'm a nitpicky engineering sort. Found it unlikely a guy would be too functional after swimming up and cracking his head on a concrete roof that was covered with barnacles. I'm a damn good swimmer, and have a bit of experience things like that, but softly, and not with the kind of bang he'd have done. That bit of the story indicated a lack of experience. He'd have had a very serious headache, with lacerations to the bone, if he was conscious at all, and be putting a lot of blood in the water unless he had a good set of dreadlocks to cushion things. The part about them swimming so far at night underneath a floating city was also pretty hard to believe. Fish would school under it, and that would bring sharks and barracudas which would be everywhere. Big benthic fellas.

A real fun story story though, with a lot of good details.

4 out of 5 stars Heinlein LIVES !.......2003-06-29

Robert A. has been reincarnated! Blind Waves is in the vein of some of RAH's best- a male writer that can develop a female protagonist- and paints lifelike images of a world after a natural disaster. Waiting eagerly for the next book- they get better each time. I don't usually re-read too many books- but I'm keeping this one.

      Book Description

In the signal-processing research community, a great deal of progress in higher-order statistics (HOS) began in the mid-1980s. These last fifteen years have witnessed a large number of theoretical developments as well as real applications. Blind Estimation Using Higher-Order Statistics focuses on the blind estimation area and records some of the major developments in this field.
Blind Estimation Using Higher-Order Statistics is a welcome addition to the few books on the subject of HOS and is the first major publication devoted to covering blind estimation using HOS. The book provides the reader with an introduction to HOS and goes on to illustrate its use in blind signal equalisation (which has many applications including (mobile) communications), blind system identification, and blind sources separation (a generic problem in signal processing with many applications including radar, sonar and communications). There is also a chapter devoted to robust cumulant estimation, an important problem where HOS results have been encouraging.
Blind Estimation Using Higher-Order Statistics is an invaluable reference for researchers, professionals and graduate students working in signal processing and related areas.

              Book Description

When the women of the City of Mandrigyn, led by Sheera Galernas, hired the mercenary army of Captain Sun Wolf, to help them rescue their men from the mines of evil, he refused. Little did he realize how insistent the ladies could be, and how far they would go to persuade him to train them against the evil of Altiokis....

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding fiction! .......2007-09-25

I only just recently "discovered" Barbara Hambly, when a friend loaned me "Dragonsbane". Where has Hambly been all my life??!! After reading "Dragonsbane" I went looking for more, and I am absolutely delighted to have found "The Ladies of Mandrigyn".
This is an absolutely riveting tale, with a striking couple at its center. As with "Dragonsbane", some ingredients of the mix cause it to masquerade as cheap fantasy thriller fiction (the central characters are named Sun Wolf and Star Hawk, for instance...) But the depth and realism of the characterisations, and the complexity of the story as it unfolds, soon set the book apart - far above - from the average.
Hambly starts the book in the center of a mercenary warrior band, with Sun Wolf as the chief. The mercenaries are a convincing welter of characters, and the absolute ascendancy of the chief is clear. But as the story unfolds, we gradually get snippets of his childhood with a bullying father, and his hidden artistic and mystical leanings. These are revealed without lessening his warrior status.
Likewise, his second in command slowly gains more depth and detail. From the original sketch of a woman who has built a reputation for deadliness and taciturnity, she develops into an internally vulnerable, highly intelligent woman, an ex-nun with a meditation habit, and the ability to put honesty before comfort.
Hambly's story of a group of women in an occupied city, sent to hire a mercenary band to liberate their people, and their interaction with the mercenaries soon turns into a twisty tale of human motivations and conflicts. Her delicate treatment of the clash of different cultures and beliefs reminds me of the work of Orson Scott Card (this is high praise). In particular, the ultimate surprise ending (and there is definitely more than one surprise at the ending), while it completely blind-sides the reader, rings absolutely true! The magic which winds through the story is almost an unnecessary frill, though a very nice one, and again, convincingly done.
While this is fun fiction rather than deathless prose, it is definitely a thought-provoking work. But it delivers those thoughts in a compulsive page-turner full of action and excitement. Just the way I like it.

5 out of 5 stars My first Hambly........2003-06-08

This book was lent to me by the most unsuspecting person:My Tae Kwon Do teacher(Sabumnim). As soon as she found out that I loved fantasy ,she lent me this book.
I was enchanted by how thouroughly Hambly describes her world, and how realistic the training of the women is.The character was a bit dislikeable at first, but he developes.
              Warning:The violence is exrtremely explicit.

              4 out of 5 stars One of Hambley's best!.......2003-06-04

This book, which I stumbled onto some years back in a used bookstore, has to be one of Hambley's best efforts, and that is saying something from such a talented and diverse author. This is a different kind of fantasy book, not about awe-inspiring heroes or mighty wizards, but one told from the viewpoint of an ordinary everyday soldier, who turns out to not be so ordinary. It details the life and philosophies of a mercenary, which is not common in fantasy literature. The characters are well-written and fully fleshed out, very believable. The main character, Capt. Sun Wolf, is one of the best "everyman" characters in print. His efforts to train a group of women how to fight to rescue their men are the central focus of most of the book, and it is wonderful to see how his attitudes change throughout the book. The main female characters are strongly written, and the central female character, Sheera, is one of the unforgettable characters in fanstasy literature. The tale of love between the capt and his second-in-comman Starhawk, both believing the other has no feelings for them, is heartwrenchingly beautiful and gripping. All in all, this story introduces the reader to a world that feels so real you almost expect to open a door and enter it. And the main plot twist of the secret of magical power is so shocking that it is doubtful the reader will know it's coming. This is a great story, and I highly recommend it to anyone lucky enough to find it in some old dusty bookstore.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS A GREAT BOOK.......2002-10-18

This is a great book. Lots of plot twists and things. With a cute love story in it too. It's one of my favorites. You can connect with the charactors. there so cool. read this it is good.

              4 out of 5 stars Ladies of Mandrigyn - a winner.......2001-06-01

This book has become one of my perennial favorites, along with its sequels, "The Witches of Wenshar" and "The Dark Hand of Magic." Hambly does an exquisite job of building believable characters in her believable fantasy world, and the realism of their inner and outward conflicts are almost always absolutely true to their own nature. My copies of Ladies as well as Witches and Dark Hand are so worn that I regret the books are out of print, as I would gladly replace my tattered copies. By all means anyone looking for a good read should hunt down the Ladies of Mandrigyn.

5 out of 5 stars An underappreciated gem.......2007-03-28

I don't remember when or where I first lucked into this remarkable book. I do know that I've read it so many times that the characters all feel like old friends.

The book is actually two books, "The Ladies of Mandrigyn" and "The Witches of Wenshar." You can buy them separately, but I'm not sure why you would - quite apart from price and convenience considerations, there's the cover art issue. Sure, this one's art isn't anything to write home about, but please tell me who exactly the woman on the cover of the standalone "Ladies" is supposed to be?

But enough cattiness. On with the review.

The first book, "Ladies of Mandrigyn," introduces our heroes: Sun Wolf, a middle-aged mercenary captain, and Starhawk, his quiet, ascetic second-in-command. It tells the story of Sun Wolf's capture by the (of course) ladies of Mandrigyn, after an unsuccessful attempt to hire him and his troops to fight the wizard king Altiokis who captured their town and enslaved their men. Sun Wolf refused to fight for them, citing his two golden rules for a warrior: "Never fall in love, and never mess with magic;" and thus finds himself being coerced instead into training the ladies to fight for themselves. While the hardened mercenary struggles with the task of making soldiers out of noblewomen, fishwives, hairdressers and prostitutes, his lieutenant Starhawk is on her own quest - her loyalty is to Sun Wolf (or, as she calls him, "the Chief.") So long as even a chance remains that the Wolf is still alive after his mysterious disappearance, her duty is to find and rescue him - and avenge him if he is dead. By the end of the book, no character escapes unscathed - or at least unchanged, and the Wolf, through no fault of his own, finds himself breaking first one, then both of his rules...

              **Fair warning: mild spoilers below**

"Witches of Wenshar" picks up not long after the end of "Ladies." In this one, Sun Wolf and Starhawk are in search of a wizard to train him - no easy feat, given that until recently, the wizard king Altiokis was hunting down and killing any that might be a rival to his power. Approaching the desert kingdom of Wenshar, it seems they may just have found what they're looking for - except that the local wizard Kaletha hates the Wolf and is jealously hoarding her knowledge, the king is a volatile drunkard, and the bishop is busy telling the king and anyone else who will listen that Sun Wolf and Kaletha both should be forbidden from working their evil in the city. Toss into the mix manipulative politics, strange superstitions, tentative race relations with the desert shirdar - and oh yes: the mysterious murders that began the night the Wolf and the Hawk arrived in the city.

Barbara Hambly spins a good tale: plot weaving that seems natural and effortless, evocative language, a keen ear for diction and dialogue. She builds an elaborate world with great subtlety, with never anything so crass as blatant exposition or a prologue, but also without even a moment of confusion on the part of the reader. Yet her chief talents lie in two areas. The first is characterization - which is good, because the first book, for all its action, is at heart a character story, and to a large extent the second one is too. Starhawk's transformation as she searches for Sun Wolf is gentle and entirely believable - the woman who arrives in Mandrigyn is completely different than the one who first set out, but at no point does it seem forced, nor does she lose anything of herself during the change. The Wolf's metamorphosis, while much more drastic and violent, feels just as natural. Nor does she short the minor characters - everyone mentioned in these two books is complex and complete. They feel like real people. Even the most stereotypical ones (Drypettis Dru of Mandrigyn; the king of Wenshar) have enough humanizing touches that hint at fully-formed personalities behind the immediate image.

Her second gift is in imagery. I know what Sun Wolf and Starhawk look like; I would know them if I saw them. I can see the canals of Mandrigyn and the sand-blasted walls of the abandoned city of Wenshar; I remember the clash of garish colors in Altiokis' obscenely opulent throne room, and the way the light shone through the leaves in the little courtyard where Kaletha taught her disciples. And I can still see the too-human eyes of the calf, and hear the high-pitched giggles of the demons. Hambly has the imagination to create beauty and horror equally, and the deft touch with words to let us see them too.

If nothing else, this book is thoroughly unique among fantasy. I cannot imagine anyone not being captivated by it, and I cannot recommend it strongly enough. It's little-known, but it's a diamond.

The problem with this book is that a number of the testosterone enhancing supplements the author recommends are no longer allowed to be sold pursuant to Govt FDA regs---therefore much of the book is simply out of date and somewhat obsolete.

I was at the lowest level of testosterone to start and after 6 months of 50mg of Ando per day, It was raised the middle level, Just where I wanted to be. L-Glutamine and Creatine are other supplements to be considered for older men, When used in correct doses and exercise bring good results. I have more studies on my website. Roger Mason, a Scientist has other good books on Amazon check them out.

This is an excellent presentation, aimed at a lay audience, for the role of testosterone replacement and supplementation for male and female health. The author clearly knows the field backwards and forwards, and presents a balance view on each supplement and approach discussed. I also thoroughly agree with his view on weight training, which can be summed up in a question one posed to Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Ah-nold's answer: "Am I too old to train with weight?" "You're too old NOT to."

Unfortunately, HR 207, originally introduced in 2002 as HR 5564 and re-introduced in 2003 as HR207 by two Republiscum Congresscritters, will result in the ban of almost all the supplements he writes about.

Sorry, guys; it was nice while it lasted.
