Product Description
In this luminous novel, Dominic Smith reinvents the life of one of photography's founding fathers. In 1839, Louis Daguerre's invention took Paris and the world by storm. A decade later, he is sinking deep into delusions brought on by exposure to mercury--the very agent that allowed his daguerreotype process.
Customer Reviews:
Flowery.......2007-08-02
The subject, Louis Daguerre was fascinating for me as a lover of photography and a tinkerer with the cyanotype process, pin hole cameras and all things not digital about photography. I think I understood more than most folk would when the processes were described, but I don't think it was meant to be a technical novel in that way. I ended up explaining a lot about it to my book club group. I would have enjoyed it more if there were more historical details as they related to Daguerre and the French Revolution. The plot was compelling, though it was difficult to get into and out of the novel.
Mercury Visions and the Human Heart.......2007-05-14
The Mercury Visions of Louis Daguerre: A Novel, Dominic Smith, 320 pages,
Atria/Washington Square Press, 2006/2007, hardcover/paperback, $24.00/$14.00
This novel peers into the mind and heart of the mid-19th-century French genius who invented the daguerreotype and into the mind and heart of a woman who refuses to be loved. In this story, the celebrated photographer Louis Daguerre suffers from the effects of the mercury process that creates the first photographs. He imagines of the end of the world, and launches on a quest to record a series of 10 images before the apocalypse.
Using an extended flashback, the author describes the intellectual progress, persistent experimentation and the physical hazards that Daguerre must surmount in order to achieve the breakthrough discovery before his competitors do. Smith renders an engaging portrait of Daguerre and his thinking, within a backstory of tumultuous times of political and social revolution.
Near the end of his career and fame, Daguerre enlists the help of bohemian poet Charles Baudelaire to help him find the settings of the portfolio, and together they prowl the underside of Paris in search of several of Daguerre's subjects and settings, including a beautiful naked woman, the perfect Parisian boulevard, and Daguerre's childhood friend and long-lost love, Isobel Le Fournier. As young adults, he held deep affections for her but she refused to be loved by him.
While visiting a Parisian brothel with Baudelaire, Daguerre encounters Isobel's daughter Chloe, who becomes the beautiful naked model in the photographer's portfolio. In addition, Smith details elements of two women's lifes. The daughter rejects the mother because of the mother's rejection of romantic love; the mother rejects the unconditional love of a suitor because she does not believe that love is real.
Dagierre does achieve his portofolio before his own personal apocaplyse arrives, brought about by the mercury vapors of the photographic process. Besides being a rewarding experience, for the sake of the history of photography, the novel is also teaches, for this reader, something new about the human heart.
Good, But Could Have Been Better.......2007-04-23
I picked this up on impulse in a bookstore. I was leaving for Russia and I knew it would be a while before I could get more books in English. I think the story would have been better if it had focused more on the struggles to invent rather than the unrequited love story. I am assuming most of the story is completely invented as well as most of the main characters. Of course Louis Daguerre was a real person, but I guess Chloe and Isobel are invented. It seems way too much of a coincidence that Daguerre's nude model turns out to be the daughter of his long lost love, but I guess the rest of the story wouldn't happen otherwise. This was a mildly entertaining read, but I hope Smith will do better in his next book.
A Dull Disappointment.......2007-04-12
The idea of this novel is intriguing but the author's execution of it is not. He was not able to develop any genuiness in the characters and his descriptions of Paris were unconvincing. He throws in some $10 words for effect but that just detracts from an already dry, clumsy and artifical story.
If you must, then get it from the library. I wish I could get my money back. Another nicely packaged, back cover hyped disappointment.
PS
I notice one reviewer calls this book "masterful." I find that astounding. To me, it was more like something written by an over-ambitious, under-talented high school student.
Didn't live up to the expectations.......2007-03-30
I had had high hopes for this book but I was sorely disappointed.
The storyline dragged like slow torture and the characters seemed barely two-dimensional.
There was great potential in both the storyline and the characterization, however the author missed both marks by a long shot.
So many times I wanted to just give up and put this one away but I kept reading thinking (hoping, wishing) it would get better. And it did, but only through fleeting passages. Then back to the same old labored reading.
I gave this 2 stars instead of 1 because there were definite resolutions to the two main conflicts presented in the story. Had it not been for those much-sought-after resolutions, the whole thing would've been a complete waste of time.
If you can hold out so long as to find out how the conflicts get resolved, then more power to you. If not, no big deal. You won't have missed much.

Video pornography has been a staple of gay male culture for decades, but there is little written about the people who perform or produce this entertainment. Charles Isherwood has written a modern tragedy about the life and death of porn star Joey Stefano. After a rapid climb to the top, Stefano died of an overdose at age 26. Isherwood is a good reporter who holds no illusions about the porn industry.
Ecstasy and Wonder Bread is both a hard-hitting exposé of an industry that uses people up and then spits them out and a sympathetic portrait of a young man whose desire for attention and fame was equaled only by his inability to say no.
Customer Reviews:
A Parable for Our Gay Times.......2006-11-10
With the explosion of porn distribution on the net and the constant rise and fall of "stars" being basically anyone paid to be naked for an orgasm in front of a camera at any time in their lives, the story of Joey Stefano is a cautionary tale that many ought heed. This entertainingly written and fairly well researched biography is a brief but revealing text. Perhaps Stefano's life could not carry a longer book, either. In any event, the reader will join him on a fast down escalator into self-destruction that shows the reality of low self-esteem, emotional insecurity, and short life span (in the marketplace or, like Stefano, literally) that often marks the human fabric of this industry. Well worth the investment of time and money, not least because a number of the people in the book, like Chi Chi LaRue, continue as active presences in the business of the meat market.
Why?.......2006-09-18
The only thing that I got out of this book what that Joey Stefano broke the glass celing in the porn world for being a bottom. It is his life story but it is just the same: A troubled kid with a drug, sex, and alcohol problem. I would have like to have read a store where he turned his life around and made an impact. I dont recommend this book.
Sad story. Not a tragedy..........2006-01-05
What I got out of this was a portrait of a beautiful, self-involved, rather self-indulgent young man who gave in to his weaknesses and lack of motivation or ability to do anything aside from relying on his looks and sexual prowess. As such stories usually go, this mindset led Stefano down a road of self-destruction and eventually death. It's certainly a fascinating portrait of a time and place very specific in Gay pop culture and adult-film history; this is a must-read for any porn aficianado for the very colorful events and characters that pop up in Joey Stefano's story. The author does a good job of outllining the events of his life and contextualizing them in the gay-porn scene of the late '80s to early '90s when gay video really came of age.
However, i must again disagree with those who characterize this story as a "tragedy". A tragedy implies that the participants had no choice or fought valiantly against the forces which eventually overwhelmed them. Joey Stefano made his own choices and was clearly not willing to own up to them---yes he was gorgeous and had great sexual mystique but he was all too willing to squander his gifts in a morass of drugs and self-degradation which he enthusiastically participated in. Clearly he was too willing to buy into the myth that you are only worth as much as your beauty allows (a too-prevalent attitude in the gay world) and his unfortunate lack of self-awareness was his ultimate undoing.
Compare and contrast him with the story of his mentor, Chi Chi LaRue---a large, homely man who became one the most successful business people in the porn world. LaRue had enough character and self-awareness to realize that looks would not get him along in the world---hard work, character, and a willingness to confront harsh realities are all necessary qualities for anyone but especially to those not gifted with dazzling good looks. LaRue becomes the de facto hero of "Wonder Bread and Ecstasy", especially considering that although Stefano barely gave him the time of day during their friendship/collaboration LaRue stood by him through anything and everything. That Stefano perished at an early age, burnt out and used, and LaRue emerged successful and thriving to this day, says much about the vagaries of vanity, empty self-gratification and excessive worship of beauty in the gay mainstream media.
A Tragic Life Revealed........2005-08-06
The first time I saw Joey Stefano in film I was overwhelmed by his beauty, his body, his sexual appetite, and his vulnerability. I think that vulnerability; that good boy/bad boy persona that was able to reach out beyond the screen is what made him into the "star" he became. Those who saw him fantasized being with him, and in the process, perhaps to protect him from all those things that could and would hurt him. His meteoric rise to fame, and his tragic demise are recounted in this sad tale about a man who became a legend in his own time.
One thinks of stars who's greatness was cut short...Kurt Cobain, Judy Garland, Carole Lombard, among others...and then there too was Joey Stefano.
You sir are no Norma Jean........2005-03-11
I'll cut some slack for this being Isherwoods first book but alas ther is nothing to see here. His Norma Jean approach to Nick Iaconna life is cliche' at best. To Isherwoods credit he does include morsels of what was going on in gay culture at the time of the early nineties which are genuinely intresting observations. Isherwoods took the E! true hollywood story approach to this bio and quite frankly been there done that. There are no new insights or revelations about the porn industry or gay culture.

Book Description
This new trilogy from three best-selling authors explores the differing perspectives of three high school seniors on the events and choices leading up to the death of a classmate, Sammy. All feel a measure of guilt for their role in the loss of their friend and must learn to understand their own life story through God's eyes instead of their own finite perspective. Nobody knows better than Miranda Sanchez that life isn't fair. She'd come to expect that life can kick you around, but Sammy was a different story. Miranda weaves her story threads into the drama of Sammy's last days. She's convinced he'd still be alive if not for her.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding trilogy.......2004-07-27
The notion of three different books by three different authors about the same story, each from a different character's perspective is new to me. I'd enjoyed the Diary series, and thought it was worth picking up the three books just to see how well the concept worked.
I actually thought the books by the other two authors were better than this, but only by a small margin. They are all excellent, and reading the same story three different times never got boring because they are all so different, while remaining consistent.
In many ways it's so true of life - we really don't know what's going on in other people's heads, especially when it comes to subterfuge and illicit behavior.
Three different authors, three different characters, three different styles, one terrific story.
Oh my gosh...........2004-05-22
This books is very very awesome.
Miranda is a supposed good-goody, and when she's told to "lighten up," she does so. She takes drugs, throws outrageous parties and gets drunk.
When a very vlose friend of hers dies at one of her parties, she's guilt tricken and wants to committ suicide.
Does she do it? Read and find out.
It's an amazing book that a person should read.

The Ritual Wine Taste of Evil
When lovely Cara Quayne dropped dead to the floor after drinking the ritual wine at the House of the Sacred Flame, she was having a religious experience of a sort unsuspected by the other initiates. Discovering how the fatal prussic acid got into the bizarre group's wine is but one of the perplexing riddles that confronts Scotland Yard's Inspector Rocerick Alleyn when he's called to discover who sent this wealthy cult member to her untimely death.
Customer Reviews:
Simple little mystery.......2004-10-01
This is one of Ms. Marsh's earlier mysteries and it shows in how soon into the novel the murder occurs as opposed to the mid-novel murder that takes place in later efforts. As usual, it is well written and this time has a rather exotic beginning as action opens in the confines of a cultish "church" where strange goings on occur.
The start of the story is seen through the eyes of Nigel Bathgate, an up and coming journalist who became friends with the lead character, Inspector Alleyn, in Ngaio Marsh's first novel, A Man Lay dead. His presence adds "fresh" eyes to the investigation as opposed to the efficient and logical views of Alleyn. In other words, Nigel plays Watson to Alleyn's Holmes.
A strange ceremony in the above mentioned place of worship, involves the communal drinking of a sacred mixture by a select few congregants. This leads to the poisoning of the Chosen Vessel (the last to drink from the cup). The cast of suspects are pretty varied including some spinsters, a young couple facing problems of their own, a stereotypical (from the then British point of view) American, a rather slimy leader of the congregation and Frenchman with refined tastes.
As always, all the loose ends are neatly tied up. If one concentrates, one can usually solve a Ngaio Marsh mystery as all the clues you need are placed before you. Her style is not of the Agatha Christie, shock twist, but rather relies on a careful examination of the facts by a likeable lead detective of perfect manners who has a keen insight into people. Her later novels reveal characters of greater depth, but for all the briefness of this novel, it is still a pleasant read as we can take pleasure in the sparkling prose of Ms Marsh and tickle our minds with a neat little mystery.
Quite Good.......2000-07-19
Not my favorite Marsh, but still very good. Nigel Bathgate (AKA Inspector Alleyn's "Watson") is simply a bored journalist looking for something to do on a rainy day. He spies the mysterious "church" across the street from him, sneaks in to a secret ceremony, and quite by accident, ends up witnessing a murder. Who does he call but his own favorite Scotland Yard detective, Roderick Alleyn. An interesting blend of spiritualism, money, drugs and murder.
Just short of excellent.......2000-04-02
First published in 1936, this mystery is just a bit dated, as one might expect. It is a little too polite by today's standards: the detective and his confidants are never in jeopardy. There is but the one murder and no real foreshadowing of another possible homicide. The plot might well have been improved by more action or at least the threat of something dire. Despite this, the ambience and characterizations are superior to most present-day whodunits. The only flaw in the characterizations is in Ms. Marsh's attempts to write grating American slang. If the reader likes Agatha Christie and the novels that are more puzzle than danger, this is a very good choice.

Book Description
This is a psychological and historical exploration of belief in a spirit world, imperceptible to the senses, as a pervasive and deeply-rooted characteristic of religion.
Belief in a spirit world, and a blissful or agonizing afterlife, is one of the most pervasive and deeply-rooted characteristics of religion. This volume offers a wide-ranging exploration of this basic religious theme. Most of the case studies are drawn from Jewish and Christian tradition, providing in-depth coverage of Judaism and Christianity from late Antiquity through the Medieval period. There are also examples from Islamic, Japanese, and Chinese traditions for a comparative perspective with Western traditions.
Several chapters deal with the formative period of Jewish and Christian apocalypticism, which is concerned not only with the end of the physical world but also with the eternal heavenly world. These chapters are also important for illustrating the development of mysticism in Western traditions.
The most distinctive aspect of this book is that it does not deal with antiquity alone, but juxtaposes the historical essays with a survey of modern day, near-death experiences. It raises issues of fundamental importance for the psychology of religion as well as for its history.
Customer Reviews:
an overlooked classic.......2006-08-14
Collins and Fishbane, two of the world's leading scholars of apocalyptic literature and the Hebrew Bible respectively, have written what should be a classic treatment of the range of views about "afterlife" held by Jews and Christians at the turn of the Christian era. This book was key to my own research in separating pop culture views from those actually held by people in ancient times. The authors write with clarity, insight and from a depth of familiarity with their subject. As with other books by each author, this volume models how critical scholarship can be made available to ordinary, intelligent readers to shine the light of wisdom onto the search for understanding and meaning in our world today.

A Parent's Nightmare Becomes a Powerful Message for the Greater Good.......2007-04-05
The loss of a child is surely the worst experience any parent could ever go through. Minister Butts tells the story of her brilliant and beautiful daughter Gia's disintegration and death due to drug abuse with a level of honesty and insight that is both riveting and heartbreaking. This is also a moving testament to the power of unshakable religious faith, a faith that gets severely tested and we can only marvel at Butts' ability to convert emotional pain into spiritual strength. This is a must read for anyone who cares about our current generation of adolescents and emerging adults. It should be required reading in middle and high schools everywhere. Clergy from all denominations might also find this to be an excellent resource to share and recommend to their congregations.
This is definitely one of those books that once you've finished reading it, you don't put it down, you look for someone else to give it to.

Great Book, need more in the series.......1999-01-05
Mistress of Ambiguities is the fourth book inn the Silverglass series by J.F Rivkin. It is a series about a noblewoman/sorceress Nyctasia and her swordswoman companion/bodyguard Corson. The book centers around Nyctasia's continuing efforts to rebuild her city Rhostshyl after a devastating civil war. The setting while in fantasy world is based on the model of Renisance italian city-state with all the attendent Machivallian politics. the story is well paced and intriguing. The book is 203 pages but backs in more story than many 300+ page books. It is a good book if you just want to chill out and read a good story. It can be read on its own but to really understand and enjoy it you need to read the first three books which are equally good. The must unfortunate aspect is that there are several plotlines that were obviously meant to be continued in future volumes which have never been published. But it doesn't detract from the story it just leaves you clamoring for more.
Female warrior and female sorceresses, uniquely done.......1998-08-21
I'm so bummed that the triology of 'mistress of ambiguities, silverglass, and web of wind' wasnt carried on. ok sure, its the old warrior and sorceress, but it was so well done. the character interaction and development was great, it was like looking in on their lives. the playful arguing and sometimes real disagreements between partners brings to life a relationship that is so mundane in other books. to some extent the adventure was almost superflous, just a vehicle for 'spending time' with them. on the other hands, the adventures were so well done, not predictable endings, complex enough to hold interest but without becoming overwhelming... i can only say, write me another one please!

Book Description
In her first collection of essays, author Dean Kramer shares the victories and failures of day-to-day life with multiple sclerosis. At her home in rural Pennsylvania Kramer faces unexpected dilemmas, including choosing which shoes to wear when the choice can no longer be based on looks — yet you are not ready to dress like the elderly neighbor, and what to do when your scooter disrupts a hornets nest and running away isn’t an option. With beauty and joy, laughter and tears, Kramer lets readers experience life through her eyes.. Many books convey the struggles of living with a life-changing disability. But Life on Cripple Creek goes further to show that with inner strength and a sense of humor the intrinsic land mines one encounters with this disease need not be devastating.

I once gave a small smile to a doctor over one of MS's odd effects, and he glared at me and said, "Why are you laughing about this?" Well, gee, Doc--what are my alternatives? I wish Dean had been beside me with her wry wit to tell him how the cow ate the cabbage when it comes to living with one of the goofiest diseases on the planet. There is so much over which we have no control, but surrendering humor should not be a requirement, no matter how much grumpy doctors or grumpy others think it should be.
Thank you, Dean, for the gift of your observations and writing that lifts our spirits. This cow thinks it's fine cabbage--and I'm definitely a fan.
