Since completing high school history, few of us have managed to keep straight the details of the French Revolution. Beyond suggestions of eating cake and the effectiveness of the guillotine, this sordid time period has remained--for many--somewhat obscure. Now, through the novel The Many Lives and Secret Sorrows of Josephine B., not only do we learn of the many differences between Robespierre and Rousseau, but we gain insight into the marriage of one of history's greatest political couples: Napoleon and Josephine.

Standing beside the charismatic Napoleon, Josephine's own importance and fascinating history have often been overshadowed. In a fictionalized account of Josephine's diaries and her correspondence, author Sandra Gulland has shed light on Josephine's pre-Napoleon life. This, the first of three books about Josephine, covers her childhood in Martinique, her first marriage, the birth of her children, her life during the revolution, and her marriage to Napoleon.

A poor Creole outsider as well as a rising socialite, Josephine experienced both the horrors of imprisonment and the privilege of connections. Utilizing these different perspectives, Gulland takes special care to bring forth the reality of life in late 18th-century France. Though she can only theorize on Josephine's emotions and desires, Gulland's talented writing and the restrained use of footnotes keep the reader properly informed on pertinent details, whether they be obscure political events or voodoo beliefs. While professional historians may bristle at the artistic license Gulland employs, most readers will find her novel a satisfying and engaging introduction to this dramatic period. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien

Book Description

In this first of three books inspired by the life of Josephine Bonaparte, Sandra Gulland has created a novel of immense and magical proportions. We meet Josephine in the exotic and lush Martinico, where an old island woman predicts that one day she will be queen. The journey from the remote village of her birth to the height of European elegance is long, but Josephine's fortune proves to be true. By way of fictionalized diary entries, we traverse her early years as she marries her one true love, bears his children, and is left betrayed, widowed, and penniless. It is Josephine's extraordinary charm, cunning, and will to survive that catapults her to the heart of society, where she meets Napoleon, whose destiny will prove to be irrevocably intertwined with hers.

I just finished reading the trilogy (took four days and I have been working too) and I am amazed at how incredible these books were. The history is incredible and told in a way that makes you feel that you are there. I laughed, I cried and now I feel empty. I will miss Josephine.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read!.......2007-01-08

I couldn't put this book down. It is filled with so much history during Jospehine Bounaparte's earlier years up to when she meets Napolean. I am not sure how this woman survived all that she lived thru in this book. It is some very good reading.

4 out of 5 stars Incredible Story Written with Heart.......2006-12-21

Let me just say that I am not normally a fan of historical fiction based on a singular character. When I received this book as a gift, I was a bit nervous about reading it. However, Ms. Gulland's talent and gift for storytelling has changed my opinion. I started out expecting not to like it - I ended up loving it.

Josephine's story is a compelling tale of a young Creole girl who eventually becomes queen. But it's more than that - it's a story of a woman caught in a loveless marriage, in impossible situations and how she managed through her own strength of character to rise above her tribulations. Ms. Gulland made me forget that I was reading fiction. She also made me love the intimacy of this story. Thank you!

4 out of 5 stars Finely Drawn Portrait.......2006-09-02

I'm not sure how Gulland does it, but her dialogue, journal entries, and letters let us get to know Josephine and keep the pages turning. An artful solution to the challenge of setting place, voice and character.

A great read for those who like historical novels and/or French culture...

Possibly addictive, I had to read the next 2 books in the series after finishing "Lives and Sorrows."

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......2006-06-29

This is the way all historical fiction should be read. It was fun to read and great to see the life and times from a woman's perspective. Josephine is so real and you cry for her to find the joy she deserves. Fabulous read, I am on the third of the series now. BUY ALL THREE!!

5 out of 5 stars praise for Sandra Gulland.......2007-07-20

These three books held me spellbound. I'm usually disappointed with series books, as I think most of the concentration is in the first volume--not so with this set. Ms. Gulland is an accomplished story teller. She has an imaginative way with words. I can hardly wait for her next series--hopefully there will be one soon.

5 out of 5 stars So beautiful............2006-09-09

I just finished the third book in the trilogy and I am literally choking back tears because I hate it that there is no more left to read!

Sandra Gulland has brought Josephine and Napoleon's romance to life through these incredible books. You feel like you know them personally and you care about their lives. I learned more about France in that time period than I ever did in a world history class! And it was done in an exciting way. There were no boring "skim over" areas in these books!

She has done a first class job with this trilogy and she truly does justice to these famous historical icons.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2006-02-21

This is a captivating and tactile series. Ms. Gulland obviously put an enormous amount of research into the books, and they are a great primer for the events surrounding the French revolution. The history, however, is a subtle bonus; the facts and historical figures are woven effortlessly into a rich narrative as told from Josephine's point of view.

A friend passed this gem on to me, and everyone I know who has read it since ended up reading late into the night, entranced by the story. I can't wait to see what this author comes up with next.

5 out of 5 stars Great historical fiction; readable without insulting your intelligence!.......2006-01-27

I expected very little from these books except a good beach read and I was SO pleasantly surprised at how well-written, readable and informative they were. I knew very little about this time in history and now want to know more (plus, I want to read more by Sandra Gulland!). These were SO GOOD! I went through the trilogy within a month's time and was so happy that I had #2 and #3 ready to read once I finished the previous books! I highly recommend these books.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth and feminine .......2005-10-17

The Trilogy was a very sympathetic account of Josephine's life written in a very smooth and readable style. The thee books read like one book. The style had a very feminine feel as it emphasized the emotions of the events that took place. I enjoyed the books tremendously.

      Book Description

Personal stories about Alaska too often are told by men. Not this time. Here are stories written from women such as Molly Heath, stranded with her children far from home after the 1964 Good Friday earthquake, and Janet McCart, whose eyes are opened working on the trans-Alaska pipeline. One of the first women to work as a deckhand on a tender is seen through her daughter's eyes. Another struggles to fly. Yet another falls in love with fishing. Sixteen women test their spirits against everything Alaska throws at them with laughter, tears, and courage. Journey's end finds them stronger and smarter than they thought they could be.

      4 out of 5 stars Light amusement.......2006-04-17

I personally would describe this book more as amusing than laugh out loud funny -- somehow the author seemed to be trying too hard for laughs much of the time rather than a more subtle wit. The central "detective" character is Jaine Austen (the Austen jokes got tiresome quickly -- don't understand the choice of names unless she was trying to have a memorable name for the series), who is a Hollywood writer who wants to write for television but mostly doesn't. She gets asked to write a script for a B sit-com with the possibility of getting invited to be on staff. She is given a desk in a ratty office (so much for the glamour of television) and introduced to the cast of characters involved in the production of "Muffy N Me," whose star is a teenage girl with big [...] and little acting ability. Someone ends up murdered, and the friend who helped get Jaine this job is a suspect. That's a good enough excuse for Jaine to decide to try to find the killer herself, so she tells the production team that she's decided to try to solve the murder and therefore has some questions to ask (you have to suspend a lot of disbelief in this book -- if one of these people is the killer, this is probably not a good idea, and the police usually get annoyed with people who do this).

The author writes sitcoms and it shows -- there's a certain sitcom quality to the whole book (going for a laugh a minute rather than the surprising witty line here or there). Still, the book engaged my attention well and I truly was surprised by the ending, although it made sense to me (as much as anything in a rather silly, suspend-all-disbelief book makes sense).

4 out of 5 stars Not as fresh..........2006-01-16

but still laugh out loud funny. I do have to say the mystery was good in this book, I didn't figure it out till our protag did, so there you go. I do enjoy the laughs but the format for the laughs gets old after a while. Instead of the protag thinking the lines all the time, let her actually say them, or team her up with someone. It was good, I will probably read the others in the series, just because I really find the character interesting and you really want her to succeed.

2 out of 5 stars Are these people reading the same book??.......2005-05-14

I dunno, I found this book to be dreadful. The writer does have a grip on the low-rent sitcom world, but the writing is awful, the lead character is cloying, and the "solution" is beyond ridiculous...

5 out of 5 stars An Actor Is Cancelled.......2005-03-17

Jaine Austen, owner of the writing service, This Pen For Hire has gotten a real job.

Kandi, her best friend got her a job to write a script for the series "Muffy `n Me." This is Kandi's new job after many years with the Saturday morning cartoon, Beanie & The Cockroach.

It starts out good, they seem to like her script and the gorgeous Quinn Kirkland, who plays the uncle of the lead character, actually flirts with her.

But there's trouble on the set, Stan Miller, one of the head writers seems to spend most of his time drinking and his wife Audrey spends most of her time yelling. Zach Levy-Taylor who plays the boyfriend of Muffy seems to want it to continue in real life. Muffy herself, Vanessa Dale won't give him or anyone else the time of day.

Things really turn bad when Quinn Kirkland turns up dead and the list of suspects run longer than the credits. He was having affairs with Vanessa, Audrey, Kandi and possibly every other woman on the lot. Was it a jealous, husband, boyfriend?

The cops think it's a jealous spurned lover, named Kandi.

Janine has to start her detective work again to try and save her best friend from a long term jail sentence. And it get's even more dangerous when she realizes that the killer is afraid of her investigation and may be trying to kill her.

      Highlights:

This book is as funny as the first one. May be the best series as far as humor in the mystery genre.

Great mystery. Jaine has to do some real detective work to figure it out and I never guessed the killer or the motive.

Jaine's parents, whose e-mail appear throughout the book, they're retired to Florida and are hooked on the home shopping network and Jaine's father seems to think her mother is having an affair with one of the men on the network. Jaine's mother thinks her husband has gone insane.

      Lowlights.

      None, just a great series.

5 out of 5 stars Fast and Fun.......2005-03-05

This second book in Laura Levine's "Jaine Austen" mysteries is a delight from cover to cover. It's a page turner, and delivers what it advertises: humor and sparkling wit. In this book, Jaine writes a sitcom script and works on the studio lot with best pal, Kandi, while it's being produced. Of course someone is killed. Kandi is blamed, and Jaine tries to clear Kandi so goes a-sleuthing. Just as entertaining as the first book, Ms. Levine gives us laugh-out-loud fun. She is GOOD.

                  Book Description

Betty Frankel Kirschner succumbed to emphysema one day in June. She had been a long-term professor at Kent State University, founding member of the feminist caucus in sociology, a political activist, a chain smoker. Close friend Laurel Richardson, a key figure in literary turn in ethnographic writing, kept a daybook, relating their conversations and interactions over Betty's last few months. Rich in memory, emotion, dreams, and life-and-death decisions, the daybook chronicles the ups and down of a terminally ill woman and the impact that illness has on friends, colleagues, and family alike. Richardson also grapples with the ethics of writing deeply personal narratives. Part memoir, part sociological analysis, part eulogy to a departed friend, Richardson opens a poignant window into living an academic life, and ending it.

5 out of 5 stars Water the "secret" medicine.......2004-09-07

I respect Dian Dincin Buchman's research on water healing. So much so, that I mention her work twice in my book, "The Holy Order of Water". While speaking before audiences, I remind them that "water" was once the universal medicine of all people on Earth. Today, water has become more of a "secret" medicine used by those of us who do our reading or who have contact with hydrotherapy in some form.
In my mind, water is being rediscovered as a healing agent for our bodies; mental and emotional health, and souls. In fact, I firmly believe the future of our civilization will be determined by our evolving relationship with water.

5 out of 5 stars As a doctor, I think this book excellent and very practical........1999-04-16

Dr. Errol Stanford, PhD, considers this book most practical, complete and easy to read. Years of experience in the field have helped me appreciate its invaluable and right-on-target, natural and hydrotherapeutic remedies. These numerous remedies are described in simple layman's language, yet a the same time with scientific precision.

I think that every health practitioner should get a copy of this complete and invaluable book.
