Customer Reviews:
The mystery is why this is labeled as mystery.......2007-06-11
The Amelia Peabody books are a lot of fun, but they are more adventure novels, with a liberal sprinkling of humor, than traditional mystery novels.
As a story about a Victorian era woman archeologist with thoroughly modern ideas, "The Hippopotamus Pool" is wonderful. It begins with a stranger who offers to reveal the location of a hitherto unknown tomb and then mysteriously disappears. Amelia and her family locate the tomb and began excavating it, but are soon forced to fend off would-be thieves. Amelia begins to wonder if there is a traitor in their midst. Is it the governess? The newly employed photographer? Or the orphan they have taken in?
Unfortunately, there is a totally unnecessary and rather weak "mystery" tacked on. If you haven't read the previous entries in the series, you'll be totally bewildered by the unsatisfying denouncement; even if you have, you'll probably find it difficult to really care.
Overall, I did like this book. The characters are great and the writing is witty. But, enjoyable as it was, I have to admit it was nothing special.
Why I love Amelia Peabody Mysteries:.......2006-06-04
Reading an Amelia Peabody Mystery is like having a favorite meal. You don't have to have it every day but when you do, it is always satisfying and delicious. You can go weeks or months between this meal and yet just thinking about it will make you salivate. THE HIPPOPOTAMUS POOL by the venerable Elizabeth Peters is number 8 in her Amelia Peabody series of eighteen or so little novels. Peter's books are so easy to read and very easy to get into. You can pick them up and become interested on the first page. They are really ideal 'beach' or 'vacation' books because they are so straightforward and uncomplicated to read, even with a multitude of interruptions. Plus, I can read a book in the series and not read another one for weeks or months and know that I can get right back into these little stories with no problem. In addition, THE HIPPOPOTAMUS POOL has a glossary in the beginning that identifies all the characters.
Thankfully, the entire family is together for the 'season' of excavating in Egypt and that makes me happy. Last year the children--Ramses, the 12 year-old boy genius and his adopted sister (a miniature Amelia, who at fifteen is quite the beauty) Nefret, were left at Aunt Evelyn & Uncle Walter's estate in England. David, an Egyptian orphan has been added to this entourage as well. Evelyn and Walter also lend their services in the excavation of this new tomb, supposedly of Queen Tetisheri. Since we are so familiar with this family, having met the four adults thirteen years previously during their courtship (in Egypt, of course), there is something very comfortable about rejoining the group.
Naturally we have the usual murders, kidnappings, grave robbers and undercover criminals. We still have the tender yet cantankerous Emerson and his no nonsense verrrry British wife Amelia who is still anticipating every move. But the children are the ones who add a delightful diversion to this adorable little mystery. And, as always, we know that everything will come out all right in the end. Every time I read a book in this series, it is like rejoining an old friend (or having a favorite meal;-)
Another exciting adventure with the Emerson family........2005-03-06
This is a really good addition to the Amelia Peabody series. For one thing we have the entire family with Amelia, Emerson, Ramses, Nefret, both cats and Emerson's brother Walter and his wife Evelyn. In this book we have Emerson on the verge of discovering an almost unheard of unopened tomb. The word of that gets the vultures circling, and there are two unscrupulous groups of people after the contents of this tomb. Amelia and her family are caught in the middle, and there is much danger to them all. The book moves fast and keeps the reader turning pages in order to see what happens next. This is a wonderfully entertaining series.
Rames and Nefret.......2004-01-25
With The Hippopotamus Pool, the Amelia Peabody series continues to improve as her son (Ramses)and ward (Nefret)hit their teenage years.
A fizzer.......2003-01-17
This book started off so well . . . and then died. Peters so indulges herself by packing "The Hippopotamus Pool" full of almost every character of significance who has previously appeared, and then some new ones, that the focus is too diffused for proper plot development, let alone character development. And what does Peters do with the characters? Walter and Evelyn are wrecked; Cyrus and Kevin have nothing to do; after showing signs of improvement Ramses has gone downhill again; and Nefret has to be one of the most singularly boring characters I have ever come across. Sir Edward (how can a younger son have that title?) and Miss Marmaduke are afterthoughts, and David was pretty well unnecessary. Amelia is back to insufferable, so thank heavens Emerson was his usual self in this book.
Whenever the plot of "The Hippopotamus Pool" showed signs of picking up, things would go flat again. The Emersons are contacted by a mysterious stranger . . . and nothing happens. They travel to Luxor . . . and nothing happens. They discover the tomb . . . and nothing happens. Between her (I think increasingly odd) determination to have no discovery made by the Emersons impact on the real history of Egyptology and her desire to flesh out what is less and less a mystery series than a family saga, Peters in this book loses the sense of direction and fun that characterised previous books in this series. And as for the ending . . . No-one could possibly have figured it out, and that violates the unofficial contract between mystery writer and mystery reader.
So why the two stars? The journey did have its good points. It wasn't till I'd finished that I realised I felt cheated by this book.
And what on earth is the Hippopotamus Pool anyway? Am I missing something?

SNIFFIN THE TRAIL.......2006-08-21
Virginia Lanier's bloodhound series opens pretty convincingly in this book which has enough plotting and subplotting to fill three books. We're introduced to feisty JoBeth Sidden, a near-thirtyish trainer of bloodhounds who also has her own company which does search and rescue operations for local police authorities. In this debut, JoBeth is involved with an abusive ex-husband; the mysterious will of her deceased artist father; a handsome new lawyer in town; escaped criminals; missing children; a handsome private investigator; and lots more. JoBeth is even framed for the attempted murder of aforementined Bubba, her ex! While it takes a little patience to get into this book, once you do, you'll find yourself rewarded. Lanier has a flair for Southern life, and her characters are sharply drawn and developed.
I'm looking forward to further adventures with JoBeth and her hounds!
If Faulkner wrote mysteries ...........2005-02-03
The sub-genre of "dog mysteries" is not nearly as extensive as "cat mysteries" for reasons I will never understand. (After all, do cats really care what human beings do to each other? I don't think so.) In this specialized arena, Virgina Lanier's Bloodhound books are definately best in show. "Death in Bloodhound Red" is one of the best novels -- in or out of the mystery genre -- I've read in a long time. Yes, the plot is meandering and convoluted, the conversations are of a length only southerners can aspire to, and the language is as dense and atmospheric as the scent of jasmine on an early summer day. But what matters in the end is how completely Lanier manages to submerge us in the swampy world of southern Georgia and the wonderful profession of search-and-rescue with her beloved bloodhounds. If all the following books aren't always as over the top excellent as the first, who cares? They are all great and the bloodhounds get even more time on stage as the series goes on. What more could you want?
Wonderful Series..........2004-06-14
"Death in Bloodhound Red" is the first in the Virginia Lanier "Bloodhound Series." It is a great book and so different from most mysteries that I am surprised that I had not heard of the series before.
This is a series to buy all at once because once you start reading = you will not want to stop.
"Death in Bloodhound Red" is difficult to classify even though it is a mystery. It is not a superficially light book and there are parts that will make you laugh and parts that are very somber.
Jo Beth Sidden raises and trains bloodhounds and utilizes them for tracking in a small county in Georgia. Her life is rather interesting. Her deceased father became a famous artist when she was a teenager, while most of her childhood was spent in dire poverty. Her childhood though, is in many ways very mysterious.
Yet by working continually, Jo Beth has built a kennel and bloodhoumd business. Businesses and law enforcement agencies hire her and her dogs to seek out drugs and criminals.
Jo Beth is rather a tough woman because she has had to be. But she is working at addressing the vulnerabilities in her life and this dialogue is reflected as well. She is a very ardent feminist because she has had to confront countless prejuidices in her life of work.
Virginia Lanier has topped my list for new authors.
House on Bloodhound Lane.......2003-11-28
A Must read series - All of Viriginia Lanier's books. The characters come alive on each page. Her description of loving and smart bloodhounds will endear you to them forever. You can't wait to read what happens next. A true treasure of a character is Joe Beth, a woman detective and her bloodhounds.
Gripping first of series.......2003-02-03
This is an incredible first book of a series, that sadly is behind a couple years. The books are; 1996-Death in Bloodhound Red, 1997-The House on Bloodhound Lane, 1998- A Brace of Bloodhounds, 1999-Blind Bloodhound Justice, 2000-Ten Little Bloodhounds. I'm not sure why we don't have books for 2001 and 2002, but after you read the first book and then run out and buy the next four that continue without dropping the pace and excitement, you'll mourn the gap in the series. Especially using the recommendations, its not that infrequent I get a new author 'can't put me down'er. However this was one of those I read through as fast as I can because of the tension and mystery, and then start right over again to read for the wealth of information and the beauty of the text.
I can't think of anything this book doesn't have. There is a strong female protaganist, and one that hard to work her way from the ground up as well (as I did) that I really appreciate. As a now breeder and trainer of bloodhounds, Jo Beth is a complex character with sometimes warring qualitis, but one that acts consistently within the defined pesonality. The tension with the maniacal ex husband catches you quickly, but the mystery picks up and holds you as you go on. Additionally I love a book that provides some other new knowlege and this book is rife with knowlege about 'The South', the Okenofree swamp, and Bloodhounds. I've checked some of what I learned here with a friend who has been in the swamp and the South and it's been checking out. As an animal lover as well, you really get to love the bloodhounds and the knowlege of scent tracking and bloodhounds in particular is wide and varied.
Yet Virginia Lanier sneaks the information in without any long boring solioquies. She always manages to get the right amount in to help you appreciate the story and does it in a way that goes with the story, like say explaining something to a new person, and then drives back to the plot before you could get bored. And she makes it fascinating. As I said earlier I was interested enough to talk to people till I found one that had been in the okenofee swamp, and I've got bloodhound research on my list of things to look into as well. As far as the south in concerned, I feel she does a good job of showing the pros and cons, the beauty and surface graciousness on the surface, and the misogeny and the racism underneath.

Book Description
What do we do in the silence of God? When many people today seem to be receiving daily messages directly from God, what do you do when your prayers seem to bounce back from the ceiling? How can you get on with the abundant life when there seems to be an abundance of silence? It's in this awesome quiet that we "trouble deaf heaven and shroud our souls in shame."
But the glorious truth is that God is seldom if ever silent. "He is the Divine Talker-although He does find delight in dramatic pauses. In the apparent silence of God, know He is speaking volumes."
Jeannette Cliff George helps us learn to listen to God with some practical advice on removing those things from our lives that clutter and distract and to remind us to remain quiet enough to hear not only His shouts but also and more importantly, His whispers.
Customer Reviews:
God delights in dramatic pauses.......2006-01-28
Troubling Deaf Heaven sings to readers' hearts! The elegant and lyrical writing lends sweetness to these pages, while the author's insights bring renewed hope.
Believers are often baffled by what they perceive as the silence of God. Yet, this book provides a different look at the intimate communication between people and the Almighty. In a sensitive sweep of this subject, Jeannette Clift George explores the many facets of prayer, as she points out obstacles and presents new ways of listening. Both seasoned believers and new Christians will be blessed by this book, as it leads them ever closer to the Father's heart.
The scriptural principles are sound, and the flow of words is delightful! The author has interspersed her insights with memos, stories, and some poem-phrased thoughts. The result is a book of beauty! It was titled after a Shakespearean sonnet, and it certainly lives up to its namesake.
There is a very personal appeal in these pages, as the author shares the thoughts on her heart. She gently, yet firmly, encourages readers to continue in communication with God despite a lack of apparent answers. Her possible explanations for His silence give Him glory while giving believers hope. She believes that God delights in dramatic pauses, which highlights His perfect timing in all things. Her words will inspire readers to listen and to be aware of His gentle whisper in our very busy lives.
Her advice is practical and her purpose is apparent. Reading this book promotes a renewed respect for the Almighty and a rekindled desire to hear Him speak! -- Joyce Handzo, Christian Book Previews.com
Inspiring .......2006-01-17
This is an awesome book that helps us find our own assurance in those times we feel God is not listening. Straight from the heart and life of the author, this book really blessed me and I know it will bring laughter, joy and comfort to all who enter its pages.

Great Mech battle Action.......2007-07-30
A well written book that includes lots of mech battles, a great heroine with the countess of Northwind who is a Mechwarrior of the highest order, perhaps one of the greatest of her time.
A good book, but I miss the good old days.......2005-06-21
This was a good book, and i enjoyed reading it. It had a good plot and good characters. I'm not much of a writer so thats about all I have to say except for I'm getting sick of constructions mechs. I miss the good old days when the fighting involved battle mechs not construction equipment. I miss Super Novas, Mad Cats, Thors, ect.
They can't call the book mechwarrior when there are like four actual battlemechs in the story. Plus one was a koshi, and as far as I'm concerned a koshi is just as bad as a construction mech.
Thats the only problem I have with these books, aside from the lack of mechs, and actual fighting these books are okay.
Dark Age- eh?.......2004-10-09
As with most Battletech readers, when I heard about a whole new set of novels coming out, i thought, great.
But my god, what is this rubbish?
They made a little circle, called it the republic, and everyone gave up there mechs (which makes calling the series Mechwarriors pretty wierd).
All the good characters are gone, you hear a tiny bit about Victor Davion and his kids, but thats it.
The whole thing doesn't make any sence. If the Republic is falling apart, is the rest of the IS just watching? Who is incharge of the Great Houses? Why have the clans given up all their Mechs too? Doesn't that stop them being clansmen?
The whole of Mechwarrior DarkAge makes no sence, is badly explained, and ruined (for me atleast) the whole battletech series. After all, it takes some of the enjoyment out of reading the clasic Battletech books when you know that ultimatley every storyline in battletech doesn't follow on into this, evey plot, all the history, isn't reflected in anyway in the new Dark Age series.
I bought a load of these Dark Age books in one go, and I wish I'd just got one first, because I wouldn't have bought any others.
Anyone whole Likes Battletech, stay well away from these books. Complete Crap.
BattleTech needs to be cleand-up..........2003-07-24
Being a fan of BattleTech for over 10 years, I must say I've seen my share of good and bad novels, soucre books, games, etc... I was not very happy with the new Dark Age setting, as somet things just dont make too much sense (I am still struggling with the fact that some Clans - or maybe all - actually GAVE UP their mechs). I think there is a lack of consistency in this series - and this book. If A. Kerensky is such a good MW, she should have ripped the Paladin apart. Second, the Clans are depicted as rather naive - being tricked very easily. This may have been the case when they first invaded, but even in Classical Btech they learned lessons!! Did they actually FORGET everything? After living in the IS for decades, one would think they'd learn something about the people they live with.
The story itself is not bad, but the action is little ridiculus.
Skillful writing, good balance.......2003-07-22
Having just read several of the "Mechwarrior: Dark Age" novels in the past few weeks, this one stands out as a journeyman piece of writing. It is certainly ahead of amateurish efforts like "the Ruins of Power." In DelRio's novel the descriptions are fresh and show a flair for fresh images, the characters are genuinely interesting and make sense, with sensible and believable motivations, and the books' "straight-ahead" plot draws us forward to learn the fate of Northwind.
In case anyone cares, the title is taken from a line in Shakespeare's Hamlet. Much of the book's fascination comes with the clash of two well-drawn woman characters-- Anastasia Kerensky, who is also known as Tassa Kay, and Tara Campbell, the beautiful Dutchess of Northwind. The character of Tassa Kay comes forward from another "Mechwarrior: Dark Age" novel entitled "Call to Duty." She was the most interesting character in that novel, and she loses little of her luster here. Tassa/Anastasia is a warrior, but also a rather hot number with a flair for passionate, extracurricular love affairs.
Since I really enjoyed this book, I will very much look forward to the second and third volumes of the trilogy. Yup, that's right-- this is the first book of a 3-volume trilogy.
Probably the trilogy structure accounts for one of the greatest faults of "A Silence in the Heavens," which is the lame, unsatisfying ending. It is more a hiatus than a true ending, since the writer is priming us for the second novel.
It probably should be mentioned that the book well balances "palace intrigue" against battle action. Two major battles are portrayed in detail as the author skillfully incorporates several points of view -- an infantryman's view, a tank commander's view, a mechwarrior's view, and the supreme commander's view. Some readers have complained about particular BattleTech novels as being starved for action scenes-- they will surely be satisfied with "A Silence in the Heavens."
A good book. I eagerly await the remaining volumes of this trilogy.

Book Description
One of the twentieth century's most widely read writers and its most influential Christian apologist, C.S. Lewis has nevertheless eluded the understanding of the numerous scholars who have approached him only as a religious thinker and man of letters. A new book by a leading Lewis authority explores the full range of his manifold genius and finds for the first time the surprising secret of Lewis's enduring literary and spiritual achievement.
It will astonish Lewis's admirers and critics alike to learn that he was far from the settled convert he appeared to be. Yet this very unsettledness, which Lewis himself found alarming, was the source of the appealing tension in his work and of his unrelenting commitment to his apologetic vocation. It was in the service of this vocation that he exercised his overarching rhetorical genius-a dazzling adroitness at suiting word, voice, and argument to a particular purpose-always militant, compelling, and persuasive. As Professor Como explores Lewis's hitherto uncharted inner landscape-the core of both his spiritual insight and his intellectual greatness-there emerges a more complex and integrated figure than we have known before.
The publication of Branches to Heaven coincides with the centenary of Lewis's birth, an occasion of heightened attention to Lewis and his work throughout the English-speaking world. It is available with a companion volume from Spence Publishing, C.S. Lewis: Memories and Reflections by John Lawlor, a moving and insightful account of the author's thirty-year friendship with Lewis.
Customer Reviews:
Read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest.......1999-01-22
Somewhere in the world there may be someone who knows more about the life and work of C.S. Lewis than does Professor James Como, but almost certainly there is no one anywhere who appreciates him more or has analyzed him as thoroughly. What Plato did for Socrates in the 160 pages of the Apology, Crito, and Phaedo, Professor Como does for Professor Lewis in the 200 pages of this remarkable new book - shows us a great mind seeking, finding, and presenting the pure and transfiguring light amid the darkness of this present world. The word "genius" is used much too generously these days, but Professor Como convincingly demonstrates that C.S. Lewis has a multiple claim upon that rarefied reality - as scholar, storyteller, medievalist, apologist, fabulist, rhetorician, and possessor of one of the greatest memories in human history, a memory able to recall and recite every word its possessor ever read. While the book is not for the dialectically timid - there are passages that demand to be read with an extra-large thinking cap - the human Lewis is here in abundance, "the good man speaking well," and also, like an even greater teacher, having compassion on the multitude. Not only did the compassionate Lewis answer every letter written to him - and they were legion - he generally wrote his works in a style the multitude understood and delighted in. Here is a book that many of the multitude of Lewis-lovers will read to their profit, their pleasure, and their greater affection for the mere Christian who not only showed them Narnia, Glome, and Perelendra, but a new heaven and a new earth.

Misinformed Consent: Women's Stories About Unnecessary Hysterectomy
ASIN: 0970090811 |
Book Description
While more than 600,000 hysterectomies are performed each year in the United States, 90 percent of them are unwarranted. This vital health guide offers women the information they need to empower themselves in making critical health decisions. For example, surgery can often do more harm than good and may pose needless risks, except in situations involving a life-threatening illness such as cancer. However, surgeons often rely on hysterectomies as a panacea for everything from premenstrual syndrome to uterine fibroids. An important step in bridging the communication gap between patient and physician are the specific questions in this book for women to ask their doctors. Included is information about various gynecological conditions with suggestions for alternative treatments, such as endometriosis, uterine prolapse, ovarian cysts, and precancerous conditions.

Better than I expected.......2006-03-03
I thought that I knew what the downsides of hysterectomy could be since so many of my friends have had to submit to one and I've done some reading here and there. But I learned a great deal more from this book. The title sounds a little alarmist, but the actual writeup is very thoughtful and well-supported information.
Finally, a physician who is on a woman's side.......2004-09-14
Read this book before you agree to having a hysterectomy. I have had two doctors recommend that I undergo hysterectomy. I refuse. A woman's uterus is her vital female organ, and there is no reason to have it removed unless there is cancer present. Find a physician who is skilled at performing myomectomies, or consider embolization, but don't let them cut out your uterus. Dr. West gives clear, eye-opening information, and much detail to allow a woman to make an informed decision. Dr. West also gives important information about the after-effects of having a hysterectomy. This is one of the most important books that a woman will ever read.
