The ABCs of marketing for every design professional.......1999-07-28
Linda Cooper Bowen's guide to creative marketing is an essential step-by-step tool for any design professional -- at any level -- seeking to generate new business and improve their image. With such diverse and relevant topics as the role of the marketing manager, positioning your image, and successful promotion programs, she presents solid methods and easy ways to grow even an established design studio. I particularly appreciate the chapter on finding (and keeping) the best clients. It's the most important part of my own job, and I can sense the ways my firm will benefit from Cooper Bowen's expertise.
A practical, chatty, well-informed guide to selling design........1999-06-04
Cooper-Bowen, much-published writer on the business of graphic design, usually addresses designers who are more comfortable with art than with profit-making. This book is no exception, but from that don't assume that the contents are either condescending or superficial. You should also not assume, if you already think of your practice as a sophisticated business, that this text will tell you nothing new. While we're not talking advanced economics here, the best advice Creative Marketing offers may be its frank assessment of when to rely on outside experts, and when to trust yourself. In plain language, the book tells you all the things you never learned in school about building a design business, with as much consideration for the artistic and personal rewards as the financial. Far from trying to force designers to fit a cold, big-business model, Cooper-Bowen's approach has everything to do with knowing exactly who you are. She encourages directness, individuality, and honesty as the best tools for long-term success. She presents experience-based (as opposed to theoretical) outlines for business plans, marketing plans, prospecting, and sales: explicit, 1-2-3 checklists structure a process most of us approach intuitively. That structure can help you stay objective as you define your own strengths, weakness, and goals-one of the hardest tasks of entrepreneuring. These nuts-and-bolts proceedures are illustrated by case studies of actual studios, showing Cooper-Bowen's ideas in action. The situations and personalities sound very familiar, and the solutions may elicit a few sighs of relief from those who've been struggling to remake themselves in some corporate mold. Creative Marketing gives great attention to personal and written communication, an area in which many visual communicators tend not to shine. Her clear guidelines for good letter, telephone, and personal presentation, backed by relevant and convincing examples, set realistic goals for effectively polishing your own image. Although I have to admit that, as an editor, I wish the author had given her own text-particularly her punctuation-another round of revision, the content itself is unusually realistic, and so precisely tailored to its audience as to be well worth the small investment for any small studio owner who suspects they could be doing better. I wish I'd read a book like this-and taken its advice-when I was struggling to make my freelance business fly. (from Nancy Bernard, Managing Editor of Critique Magazine.)

Book Description
An encyclopedic reference developed in collaboration with the National Gallery of Art, the Artists' Pigments series combines two aspects of the study of pigments--the history of individual pigments and dyes and scientific methods for identifying and characterizing artists' colorants--rarely brought together in one publication. Volume 2 contains extensive studies of nine pigments including azurite and blue verditer, ultramarine blue, lead white, lead-tin yellow, smalt, verdigris and copper resinate, vermilion and cinnabar, malachite and green verditer, and calcium carbonate whites. These essays, which originally appeared in Studies in Conservation, have been substantially revised and brought up to date. With at least two more volumes planned, this ground-breaking series is of compelling interest to the practicing artist, art historian, conservation scientist and conservator, and connoisseur.

Ditto what the professor said!.......2004-07-14
This information is impossible to find elsewhere, at least compiled as it is here. If you are into the history and science behing painting, this book is for you...I had to wait a long time to find this book used through Amazon, and waited even longer for vol.3 (which is still available new). I can't find any info. on vols. 1 and 4. If anyone knows if these even actually made it into print, I'd appreciate hearing any information you have.
Something for everyone, even science geeks.......2001-06-17
This the second of the National Gallery's series on the history and science of pigments. The histories of each pigment are well thought out, and unlike many older books on this subject, the collective authors have not neglected the non-western world. From the perspective of someone who is active in living history groups and calligraphy societies, the lists of who used these pigments, along with when and where, is a welcome feature. As someone who hunts down minerals to make them into paint, the information on IR and X-ray diffraction data, along with color plates of the pigments examined with polarized-light and scanning electron microscopy are a welcome change compared to most other books on historical pigment use. As a scientist, the analytical info is worth the price of the book all by itself, from my point of view. Much of the discussion on the occurence and art history of the mineral pigments has found its way into geology and mineralogy classes I have taught.
Some of the material in this volume can also be found in Gettens and Stout almost word for word, though in the articles where this is most conspicuous, Gettens is always first or second author. To be fair, the editors of this series have never pretended that the articles were new material - though much of it has been new to me - but rather revised and updated material from the journal _Studies in Conservation_. Since the venerable Gettens was deceased by the time this volume was published, he may not have had the opportunity to revise his own material. Gettens was one of the instigators of the Artists' Pigment series, and since most of his research has not been superceded as far as I can tell, it's a small complaint and certainly not grounds to avoid this book. Don't avoid this book! Out of the three volumes in this series, this volume (Vol. 2) is the one I like best, probably because it covers most of the mineral pigments and some of the artificial pigments that I find or make. And unlike some other books on pigments, written by armchair scholars, it is obvious that the collective authors of this volume got down and dirty and played with the paints. The hands-on experience really shines through.
As someone who barely has time to keep up with the literature in my own field, I found the Artists' Pigments series a welcome addition to my library - a lot of well-researched and well-written material all in one place. I must admit that my favorable opinion of this series is partly based on the wealth of scientific analyses therein, which may not help a non-nerd evaluate this book, but I will point out that all my art-fiend friends, some of whom make their living in the fine arts, are constantly trying to borrow it.

Book Description
The most diverse volume of Sin City material available, Booze, Broads, & Bullets, showcases Frank Miller's vignettes and color experiments from throughout the years of his groundbreaking crime series, and includes art created especially for the original collection. A good entry point for new readers wondering what Sin City is all about - or longtime readers who can't get enough - Miller has painted a gritty, decadent, and gloriously dirty portrait. Have a taste of the city ... just one little taste. Just one.
Customer Reviews:
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
The sixth Sin City volume is a series of short stories, if you can call comics that. You get pieces that star Marv, for example, and one of those even has no talking.
Miller uses color a little more here, to emphasis who is who. For example, in the tales of an assassin, she appears in a different color to the rest of the book. A similar technique is used for 'The Babe Wore Red'.
Welcome to Sin City.......2007-08-26
Unlike the start of Miller's masterwork, volume 6 is more a series of vignettes, but it's just as powerful as anything else. We see some familiar characters like Marv and the ever present Nancy and some new ones are thrown in for good measure. As always, there are previous (and likely future) stories entwined throughout for careful readers of the full series.
An awesome combination of Sin City stories........2007-07-21
Frank Miller's Sin City is still dead-on as the the most violent, dark and most noir comic of our time. Book 6 of 7, Booze, Broads, & Bullets is a combination of stories about the people of Basin City. These tales are funny, perverted and emotional, "Silent Night", "The Customer is Always Right", "The Babe Wore Red" "And Behind Door Number Three... are my favorite of the bunch. I hope you enjoy this book!
"It turns out I'm good at killing. And I like it. I like it a lot.".......2007-07-09
BOOZE, BROADS, & BULLETS gets the Sin City series back on track after the unfortunate swing and miss of Vol. 5, FAMILY VALUES. A collection of short stories, it intermixes familiar faces while introducing some new ones. Marv, the old favorite from THE HARD GOODBYE, is in a couple of stories and we see his two-fisted philosophy of protecting the unprotected in action. Dwight from THE BIG FAT KILL also helps out a damsel-in-distress de jour. While Miho and the girls of Old Town dispense their own rough justice to the deserving saps who ask for it.
As for the new faces, the most interesting is the female killer Delia, the subject of three stories here. She provides the quote which constitutes the title of this review and she means what she says. Delia does enjoy killing and she is awfully good at it. Delia represents exactly what I like about the Sin City books - female characters that can be not only the source of solace and comfort to men, but the exact opposite as well. Besides Delia, we also meet Amy, aka Daddy's Little Girl. Amy may not kill people directly like Delia, but she sure is a catalyst for their deaths. Although these characters might be new, the hard stories and noir edge are exactly what we have come to expect from the residents of Basin City.
All in all, BOOZE, BROADS, & BULLETS is a solid addition to the Sin City catalogue. Everyone will have their favorite stories in this volume and everyone will see some of the stories as not quite as good. But looked at as a whole, if you have made it this far into the series, you probably will not be disappointed with this book.
Solid collection of small Sin City yarns.......2007-06-04
Booze, Broads, & Bullets collects eleven Sin City short stories from Frank Miller all in one handy graphic novel, and for the most part, they are all typically great Sin City yarns. Familiar faces are abound in this collection, from Marv (who stars in "Just Another Saturday Night" and the fittingly titled "Silent Night") to Dwight (the excellent closing story "The Babe Wore Red") along with the girls of Old Town ("And Behind Door Number Three") and even small time crooks Klump and Shlubb ("Fat Man and Little Boy"). Also of note here is "The Customer is Always Right", which served as the prologue of the Sin City movie directed by Miller and Robert Rodriguez as well. While a few of the stories are instantly forgettable ("Rats" for one), the good definitely outweighs the bad here as Miller spins some fun and gritty yarns while even experimenting a bit with his tried but true art style. "The Babe Wore Red" is worth the price of admission alone, and is another reason why Dwight McCarthy is one of the best characters Miller has ever created. All in all, Booze, Broads, & Bullets is a more than solid collection of Sin City yarns, and is definitely worth picking up.

Not that interesting.......2005-09-30
Best for a college aged woman or someone just out of college.
Very helpful!.......2005-03-05
I liked this book a lot. It was very helpful, though it did make a lot of refrences to sex. All in all, I don't regret buying it.
best book I've flipped through on relationships.......2005-03-04
Short, direct and really useful survival guide, and really amusing to read. It's not one of those books with lengthy philosophical essays, or examples of other people's lives. It is well-structured, gets right to the point, and is perfect for us with short attention span
Short, sweet, and jam packed with information.......2005-01-17
EVERY tip in this book--from what to have in the fridge to how to have sex and make your stomach look flat--was well-written and dead useful. Well worth the price, possibly even worth twice the price! Buy it immediately, and buy copies for all your girlfriends! Enjoy.
Cute read.......2004-10-20
This was a cute book. I enjoyed the book and it had some great tips and advice for girly emergencies. It's a cute book to have around.

Girly Problems Solved.......2003-07-17
After reading this book, I bought five copies and gave them my sisters and my girl friends (but only my very best ones -- I don't want everybody to know these great secrets!). It has solutions for just about every girly emergency a party girl can think of -- from too much clubbing to what to do to prep for a last minute romantic trip to the beach. The 3 days to a flat tummy section is fabulous, and the hangover prevention and cure section is like gospel among my group! The beauty section is fun -- with lots of secrets hidden in your pantry for shiny hair, soft skin, and white nails. And of course, there are sections on catching and dumping guys which my single friends really use. This is a book you'll always want close at hand -- or maybe in your handbag!
