winning the right way.......2007-03-27

This book addresses effective tennis strategies from every angle. Tennis is a mental game after all. You just need physical fitness and endurance to go with it. Each drill comes with a clear description (category, purpose, player's level, time, procedure, coaching points) and a diagram. Every player's level is covered - from beginner to professional. In addition, USTA does not overlook the importance of planning your strategy around your and the opponent's strengths and weaknesses. In this respect, four basic styles of play are addressed: 1) counterpuncher, 2) aggressive baseliner, 3) all-court-player, and 4) serve-and-volleyer. Not only it recommends drill patterns for your particular style of play, it also offers a valuable look at the drill patterns that your opponent with a different style may (and surely will) use against you during a match. As an aggressive baseliner, I have always found playing against counterpunchers frustrating - now I know why. And if you are willing to step out of your comfort zone, and practise every drill in this book (as long as your level allows it, of course), your tennis skills will improve greatly. It goes without saying that you need another dedicated player to practise the drills for singles (or three for doubles), and a coach who will guide you through the drills and make necessary corrections (especially if you are a beginner or intermediate player). A great book for every competitive tennis player!

UNDERSTANDING THE GAME.......2007-01-09

I coach tennis for kids and teenagers for over 12 years. In order to plan classes not boring and profitable, I seek books that have pratical drills.
Besides having this kind of drills, this book shows you HOW, WHY and WHEN you should apply them to a specific game situation. Using diferent patterns of play, from the defensive player to the aggressive one, this book matches drills with tactics, giving you a good perspective of THE GAME.
I strongly recommend it.

Great book for coaches........2002-07-12

This book divides players into four playing styles based on a paragraph description of each. Then, it has a chart showing which patterns and drills in the book each style should focus on to improve their play. There are two chapters each on Serves, Returns, Midcourt, and Volleying. The first chapter describes the patterns of play and the second has drills to improve on the patterns.

This is focused on singles instruction and is a great drill and skills book for a coach. Most all of the drills are for multiple player training.

If you're looking for a book to give you drills to improve your tennis team, its a great buy. If you're looking for a book about strategy, what to do, and why, then this is not the book for you.

Very macho........2005-04-10

The plot was suspenseful-man against man, man against nature--had excellent dialogue and lots of disreputable characters. The only likable character was the protagonist, and it just seemed off balance to me. The problem was the only part of the story in which I really became engrossed was the ship in the hurricane. The rest I found myself skimming through. Those who like macho good guy stories, although without any likable or interesting side kicks, might enjoy this, but for me, it was strictly an okay read.

An excellent, intelligent thriller by a master........2004-05-05

Ron Faust has been writing thrillers for thirty years, and every one of them is entertaining. Many of his earlier books are collector's items and almost impossible to find. I was so glad to see something new from him. I bought this book on a Friday and finished it a few nights later. Wow! What fun--intelligent, witty, and almost impossible to put down. Interesting characters, some extremely tense scenes, and a satisfying ending . . . I loved it. Kind of a cross between Travis McGee and Matthew Hope, I think. I can't wait for the second novel in the series.

strong crime thriller.......2004-04-29

After working for years as a military police officer and as a civilian patrol officer Dan Shaw is a paralegal going at night to law school. He also serves subpoenas to people to make court appearances until his last mark beat him up and Dan then decided to earn money in a safer way. Lawyer Tom Petrie hires Dan to travel to Key Largo to find Peter Falconer who is due to inherit millions of dollars. He locates Peter's boat but the only thing on board is a shaved dead goat. A female body is found at the bottom of the sea.

When Dan returns to Bell Harbor, Petrie informs him that Peter has been kidnapped and the perpetrators demand $750,000 for his return. When Dan arrives at the exchange location, he realizes the perpetrators are pirates who trade in drugs, illegal immigrants and military weapons. The exchange fails to happen because nobody makes contact with him. A new location is arranged. This time Petrie and Peter's sister accompanies him but they find themselves in a boatload of trouble when they and the money wind up in the pirates' hands.

The juxtaposition of beautiful tropical locales with horrific crimes being committed there brings a visual starkness and a feeling of gritty surrealism to DEAD MEN RISE UP NEVER. The protagonist skates very close to the wrong side of the law when he gets pushed too far and readers will approve his actions because he seeks justice not blind obedience to the law. Ron Faust knows how to write a crime thriller that will keep readers coming back for more.

Another Winner!.......2006-06-26

Farrar here writes another very relevant, readable book to add to his long list of successes. Although not as directly targeted to men's needs specifically, the author resonates with all his readers in describing severe trials and providing encouragement on how to weather them. Farrar is a top-notch writer -- I recommend this book highly, especially to Christian men familiar with his other works.

Steve does it again.......2003-06-28

Once again, Steve Farrar has written a fantastic book. His frank, no holds barred style is refreshing in an era where people tiptoe around subjects. When you're hurting and going through trials, you don't need someone to tiptoe around the problem, you need practical advice and encouragement.

This book is extremely encouraging. He talks specifically about life's "pop quizzes" -- those trials we don't expect -- and how God uses these trials to shape our character and strengthen us. The problem is they're unexpected by nature, and we often can't really tell the positive effect until they're over with. Understanding that there is a purpose and reason behind such quizzes makes them more bearable.

Lots of examples from his own life, his friends, and the Bible make his points come alive and hit home in the best way possible. I liked it so much, I'm sending copies to a few friends that need to read it.

A Great book for Christians who are in the fiery trials.......2002-04-23

While this book is an outstanding book for Christian men, it can easily be applicable to both men and women. Steve does an outstanding job of showing what we are to do when the trap doors of life send us into pits of despair. If you have ever been to the point where you needed to here from God and God is silent, this book shows we aren't the first. Men of the Bible like David, and Asaph had times when they were in the pits of despair, and they left trail markers to help guide us. Steve does a excellent job pointing these markers out that were left for us in the Psalms and explaining them. A book every Christian man should read so that when the trials and persecutions come, they will be able to navigate through them with the help of the Shephard. .

Three kids find a secret entrance that leads them to Avalon. Once there, they find out a few things are missing, including Excalibur. Huon, the Warden of the West, fills them in.

They set out to find them, intrepid younglings that they are. Along the way they meet Merlin, among others.

A great starter to catch the imagination of younger readers.......2006-11-10

This is the tipe of book that will fire the imagination of younger readers and have them clammering for smething else to read.

Soft "Magic".......2005-12-13

Starscape Books starts off a new reprint series, the "Magic Books" by the late Andre Norton, called that because each book has the word "Magic" in the title. The first in that series, "Steel Magic," is a charming and imaginative book, though it's too fast-moving for its own good.

While vacationing with their uncle, the three Lowery children go on a picnic, and decide to explore the local woodlands. They find a minature castle, creep past a wall -- and find themselves in an unfamiliar world. They promptly bump into the legendary Huon of the Horn, who tells them that they are in the magical land of Avalon. Merlin and Arthur are also there.

And that's where the problems are. Three magical items have been stolen: Huon's horn, Merlin's ring, and Arthur's sword. Evidently Greg, Eric, and Sara are destined to find these three things. And so they set out on three separate quests, battling the dark forces on Avalon with only a steel knife, fork and spoon...

Andre Norton spins up the feeling of a classic in "Steel Magic," adding heft doses of myth, legend and classic Arthuriana to your basic good-vs-evil battle. It's got Norton's detailed writing, a unique setting, and a shriveling spin on the idea that certain metals (like steel) will destroy fey creatures. It's a brilliant, and rather funny, application.

The only problem is that the book feels like abridged version of the realm thing. All the quests seem to take about half an hour; the kids barely arrive in Avalon before they are shuttled off to do battle. Avalon is bursting with potential for exploration, and we get a day trip that ends all too quickly.

Despite this, the climactic clash between good and evil shows Norton's considerable skills at their best. Arthur and Merlin have very brief cameos, but much of the attention is on the admittedly charming Huon and the courageous lead trio, who are reminiscent of the plucky, stout-hearted kids in books like the Narnia series.

While it feels like it's set on fast-forward, with no breathing breaks, "Steel Magic" is still a charming, enchanting little magical book, and at times shows Norton's skill at its peak.

Great Rings/Redwall/Narnia Precursor for Younger Children.......2004-04-05

Steel Magic was a favorite of mine growing up - I probably read it 3 or 4 times. I recently ordered it for my children, and I reread it before I passed it on to them. Norton's world retains a magic and wonder that should entrance just about any child. But when I was growing up we did not have Lord of the Rings, the Redwall series, Narnia (well, it was there, I just hadn't discovered it), or the many other well-developed fantasy worlds both in print and the visual media of today. So a worldly pre-teen might now find Steel Magic to be a little simple in comparison to the plethora of other fantasy stories now available.
That is not to detract from Norton's fine storytelling ability. Buy this book for a nine-to-twelve year old who has not yet delved into Tolkien or Jacques. A fine tale.

Avalon Under Siege.......2002-12-07

Steel Magic is a fantasy novel for older children, based loosely on the legends of King Arthur and Roland. It involves a magic gate to Avalon and quests to find three lost tokens of power.

The Lowery children -- Greg, Eric, and Sara -- are staying at Tern Manor with their Uncle Mac while their father and mother are in Japan. Sara wins a picnic basket at the Firemen's Strawberry Festival and the children decide to put it to use. The next day they pack a picnic lunch and search for a lost lake. After winding and crawling through the underbrush, they find the lake and, on as island in the middle of it, they also discover a miniature castle.

Although the doorway has been blocked with masonry, they are able to gain entrance by chipping away the mortar. Once within the castle, they are surrounded by a gray mist and, eventually, they find themselves somewhere else. After a brief exploration, they determine that they could not be on the island and are far from any place familiar. Opening the picnic backet, they start to eat while discussing the strange events, whereupon an unexpected guest shows up for lunch.

The young man introduces himself as Huon of the Horn, the Warden of the West. He also tells them of the Warden of the East, Arthur. He informs them that they are in Avalon and tells them of the three lost objects: Excalibur, his Horn, and the ring of Merlin Ambrosius. Since they have been admitted through the Gate of the Fox, he explains, they must be in Avalon for a purpose. When questioned about his knife, he states that it is dwarf silver because the natives of Avalon cannot handle iron without harm.

Huon takes them to Caer Siddi, where they meet Merlin. There they discover that evil has moved deep within Avalon and that the situation is very bad. Moreover, they are told that events in Avalon are mirrored in their own world. Merlin asks them to use their power of iron to retrieve the lost tokens and, when they agree, conducts them to a magic mirror, where they each take a stainless steel implement from the picnic basket and pass through to separate locales.

This novel is a story of courage and perseverence, with each child facing and overcoming their special fears. It has brave people and magical animals, both good and evil, including a very wise fox.

GORGEOUS EPIC FANTASY!.......2006-04-27

Dragon Arms by David Hutchison begins an epic, Manga-stlye heroic fantasy in the grandest traditions of Tolkien, Jordan, and Leiber. In the opening volume we find a world under they tyranny of Lord Eon and his demonic servants known as the Majin who are seeking to dominate all the free peoples of Lordez. They spread across the land conquering and destroying anyone who dares to oppose them. But there is hope, the legendary wizard Anrack, long thought dead has returned and assembled a group of powerful heroes to oppose Eon and his forces. Among them is Kyoko who wields a many-bladed whip, Stone who was formerly a trusted lieutenant of Eon's but who now champions the cause of good, and the mysterious Naga who is related to the ancient dragon-kin and may hold the key to defeating Eon. The group travel to the ancient temple of Harsi-Kell to find the legendary dragon arms but find the temple already ransacked by Eon and the ancient weapons destroyed.

Starting with the fantastic art, Dragon Arms is a spectacular story. It reprints the first five issues of the regular comic from Antarctic press into Manga format. The action and panels flow beautifully and it's truly a gorgeous book. The combination of heroic fantasy and Manga elements blends quite well. Hutchisons renditions of the terrifying Majin are truly evil and vile, and as pointed out in the story, even more a threat than Eon himself. The story moves briskly and before I knew it I was at the end and wanting more. I look forward to seeing where the story goes from here.

Activities Galore.......2003-04-24

I was actually a student in Tana's University classroom. It was this book that allowed me to learn a ton of information about ideas to use in the classroom, regarding issues that sometimes hinder emotional well being. It is my hope that all teachers incorporate emotional well being awareness into their everyday classrooms.
