Book Description

Meet Tasha—single and still searching. A producer for Britain’s most popular morning show working under a nightmare boss, Tash is well-versed in the trials and tribulations of twenty-first century dating. She and her three best friends certainly haven’t lived the fairy tale they thought they would: there’s Andy, who’s hooked on passion, but too much of a tomboy to have moved much beyond the beer-drinking contest stage; Mel, stuck in a steady but loveless relationship; and Emma, endlessly waiting for her other half to propose. Their love lives are only complicated by the sort of men who seem to drift in and out: Andrew—suave, good-looking and head over heels in love . . . with himself; Simon, who is allergic to commitment but has a bad-boy nature that’s impossible to resist; and Adam—perfectly attractive, but too sweet to be sexy.

The bestselling first novel that launched Jane Green, one of the brightest stars in contemporary women’s fiction, Straight Talking sets the record straight regarding the real world of dating, and follows the adventures of Tash and her friends as they search for fulfillment and the right kind of love. Funny, flirty, and ultimately tender, Straight Talking gets at the heart of modern romance.

3 out of 5 stars Not Her Best Novel.......2007-09-28

Straight Talking wasn't the first novel of Greens that I started on. I read Jemima J and Bookends first. I think that might have affected how I reacted to this novel. It isn't the same style. It's not as light and "chick-lit" as her other novels. The main character actually had me routing for her to lose. I don't think this is Green's best novel but that being said it is still a well-written novel. Jane Green is still an excellent author.

4 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-09-09

I just finished reading this book, and I have to tell you that I loved it!!
It wasn't Jane Green's best book that I have read, but I really enjoyed it!

For every woman in her 20s and 30s that has looked for love or wondered, if it'll ever happen to her, this book is for you..

It is VERY honest, direct, holds nothing back, real to our time..

It made me laugh really hard but it made me cry as well..you will love Tasha and most likely identify with her.
I couldn't put this book down!!

1 out of 5 stars Self-indulgent twaddle.......2007-04-05

I totally agree with the reviews by Sebastian and Berthap. I have read other, much earlier Jane Green novels before and quite enjoyed them for what they are (enjoyable "chick lit" about love and friendship etc). This one was dreadful though. I had expected it to change perspectives between the different characters but it is all told from the point of view of one very unlikeable vain, superficial character. She is the type of woman I would want to shake (or avoid like the plague) if I met her in real life. I also thought the writing was very lazy, ie, repetitive, contradictory, full of cliches etc etc. I think that after this and Jemima J (which I didn't mind but certainly didn't like as much as other Jane Green books)I will be staying well clear of this writer.

My recommendation for potential buyers - don't buy this book, check out writers Sheila O'Flanagan or Elizabeth Noble instead.

5 out of 5 stars favorite jane green so far.......2006-12-23

I have read multiple chick lit genre novels and Jane Green remains to be my favorite author. I have read Mr. Maybe and Bookends but this has been my favorite of the three. It was constantly interesting and I grew attached to the character's plight, eager to read this nonstop. It may be more for the younger audience but as a 20 year old it was just right for me!

      Book Description

Hillside Manor's neighbors all adored proprietor Judith McMonigle Flynn's festive suggestion to deck the halls and houses in their cul-de-sac with eye-catching Christmas finery -- except Enid Goodrich. The grumpy old humbug refused to cooperate. Then someone cooked her Christmas goose -- silencing Enid's objections with a handy hatchet. Though Judith's already got a lot under her tree -- what with holidy business booming and the anticipated unwanted arrival of hubby Joe's soused ex-spouse -- she's not about to let murder mess up what's left of her seasonal spirit. With the help of irrepressible cousin Renie, Judith's determined to wrap up this case for Christmas -- and expose the Scrooge-slayer who felt strongly that the only Goodrich is a Deadrich.

      Customer Reviews:

      2 out of 5 stars pretty awful.......2001-08-29

I usually enjoy Mary Daheim's books. They are improbable but entertaining. This one is beyond the pale. Judith intrudes on a police investigation without reason or invitation. She invites the woman who stole her fiance, leaving her pregnant and with no alternative than the awful Dan, and that's just the beginning. I lost all sympathy for the doormat, and her investigations annoyed me. I ended up giving the book away.

      4 out of 5 stars A Bed-and-Breakfast Christmas.......2001-04-10

It's Christmas time, and Judith Flynn has decided that she and the neighbors on her cul-de-sac should celebrate by decorating their houses. Eveyone thinks it's a great idea except for the crabby Enid Goodrich who seems to be lacking in Christmas spirit. She has been a detriment to the neighborhood for some time and it's hard to find genuine sympathy among her neighbors when she is killed with a hatchet just before Christmas. Of course this means that there are lots of suspects because Enid has offended almost everyone she has come in contact with. This includes her rather unsavory relatives who dislike her as much as everyone else. Judith and her cousin, Renie, do their usual sleuthing job and Judith finally comes up with the identity of the killer. This is enjoyable reading for fans of this genre.

1 out of 5 stars Another book about Joe Flynn and the "little woman"..........2000-12-05

UGH!! I have read every mystery in this series so far. I keep reading them because I love the setting, etc, and try my best to ignore the lead character. But I can do it no longer. The Bed and Breakfast series makes me feel like I am reading about the Betty Crocker 1950's. Judith's prizewinning husband is truly a jackass, and she simpers and caters to him like a spineless idiot. What good old Joe needs is a boot out the door. Maybe then Judith could be the independant character she showed the potential of being in the first book of the series. Ane Renie! Oh please! If I read one more time about how Bill had to have his dinner on time every day....if he's so worried about it, let him cook it himself! I just hope that the much better Alpine series by the same author never becomes this disgusting.

5 out of 5 stars Cozy, funny mystery.......1999-09-11

This is one book in a series of bed-and-breakfast mysteries set in Seattle, Washington. Anyone familiar with the city can tell that the author, Mary Daheim, has changed the place names, but retained the feel of the city in accurate descriptions. Heraldsgate Hill is really Queen Anne Hill. Norway General Hospital is really Swedish Hospital. Papaya Pete's restaurant is really Trader Vics. Donner and Blitzen department store is really the now defunct Frederick and Nelsons. Nordquist is Nordstroms. The Belle Epoch is The Bon Marche, now known just as The Bon. Moonbeams coffee house is really Starbucks, and so on. The descriptions are so accurately and fondly drawn that the reader experiences a warm sense of being there, especially if one has actually lived in Seattle at one time. The relationships of the characters are sometimes feisty but honest and often very funny. I recommend this whole series.

4 out of 5 stars Good, humorous characters.......1998-12-05

I've read every one of Mary Daheim's bed and breakfast mysteries and enjoyed them all. They are funny and meant to be. I love the characters of Gertie and Reenie and laugh out loud at their speech. Set in Heraldsgate(which is a little like Seattle)some of the humor is more obvious to those of us fortunate enough to live in the Pacific Northwest. This book is fun to read at the holiday season.

Despite its ominous title, How to Be a Wicked Witch is more like a bad girls' guide to being a good witch. Considering the primary tenet of witchcraft--"Harm no one, including yourself"--there's really not much leeway to be wicked, according to author Patricia Telesco. The trick, then, is not to attack your enemies, notes Telesco (author of Magick Made Easy). Rather, stay well defended and sharp in skills. This way, you can ward off attackers and remain wickedly happy with your dazzling strength and confident attitude. Telesco offers specific suggestions for boosting witch esteem and magical powers, such as "Living well is the best revenge" and "Own a decent broom" (to sweep out the dirt in life and sweep in good luck). She refuses to offer guidelines for enacting revenge or casting evil curses, since black magic will come back to "bite you in the butt." Other tips include casting spells for self-protection, learning fortunetelling skills, and creating magic potions. --Gail Hudson

                Book Description

Are You a Good Witch or a Bad Witch?

Or perhaps you are a witch who simply wants to make some dramatic, positive changes. The next time you are downsized, dumped on, or jilted, or feel like a drudge, turn to this light-hearted but learned primer on the art of spellcraft. This witty combination of traditional rituals for finding health, wealth, and happiness will also show you clever ways to use magic for exacting just retribution, balancing karmic bank accounts, chastising a wayward lover, improving your personal image, or effectively dealing with a meddlesome mother.

With incantations drawn from a variety of magickal traditions (as well as suggestions on how to customize them) and simple rituals that require nothing more than willpower and ingredients found in any household, Patricia Telesco explains transformational methods for handling both the big crises and the little annoyances of everyday life, including how to:

Increase sexual potency and passion • Improve your luck • Lure a lover • Resolve a family feud • Increase personal charisma • Attract prosperity

Filled with sane advice and sassy examples, How to Be a Wicked Witch will help you release the witch within.

4 out of 5 stars Good For Its Ideals.......2007-06-27

This book was one of the first I ever read upon the subject. It's not exactly original, but it presents some interesting ideas and principles. Though some of it is impractical, over all it's a good book for beginners...or witches who need to lighten up a little bit.

5 out of 5 stars Wicked and Wonderful.......2007-06-19

I absolutely love this book. I picked it up off the bargain table at a bookstore (how could I NOT with that title?!) and after flipping through it, I put the How-to-keep-from-snapping-and-beating-those-who-annoy-to-a-pulp self-help type book that I was also carrying down. So I originally purchased it as a fun, light read, and it's excellent for that, but I did find myself starting to relate to the witchier parts. With my new found interest, I've been seeking out similar books, and it seems to me that this one is the best (of the few I've purchased so far) at giving you the tools that you need to run with witchery yourself, rather than step by step rituals or spells (although those are there, too).

                5 out of 5 stars Positively "Charming".......2006-08-05

This book is a wonderful "starter" book for someone who wants to try some simple spells and charms. It also gives you good advice on how to conduct yourself as a witch. It is the first book on witchcraft that I ever purchased and I was very surprised and pleased with it. For example, the author gives you simple substitutions for items used in spells that you can find around the house, even in your "junk drawer". So, you don't have to spend a lot of time and/or money looking for for "ingredients". Delightful, informative and FUN!

                1 out of 5 stars Couldn't enjoy it, sorry..........2005-06-24

I tried to read it, I really did, and I don't understand why you all think it's so wonderful. I found it superficial, messy and BORING!
This book is NOT about wicca, and that's maybe why I rate it so low: because I got disappointed! (this is not a bad thing, I'll just tell you, so you know it)
I think that her correspondence-lists are very messy, because she's mixing trees, flowers and herbs together in a non-logical way when she describes them. I actually just got more confused by reading this book.
The way she writes is so boring, I actually fell asleep while reading it. (It's true!)
I'm never gonna open that book again. I think ill sell it or give it away to someone I don't like.
If you're an experienced witch, don't even think about buying it.
If you're new to the craft and you just want a book about spells and divination-stuff and such, and you don't mind the mess, I believe you could enjoy this, though I still think you might be better off with a book not quite so superficial.
                but maybe thats just me...
                blessed be

                4 out of 5 stars it's okay.......2004-04-14

Nice title, don't you think? Of course, but, all who have heard of the author already know it's not about being evil or anything. It's basically just a book to take into your hands when you've had a bad day. (Nope, when I have bad days, I don't find myself turning to it, or any books for that matter). I guess this is a good book to have around, for basic fun and witchery, and if you're a fan of kitchen witchery, you'll like the last chapter. There's also a weird spell in there to make people go away by making them fart. (I think it would be easier just to tell them to leave, than have them stink up the house!) What else to say? Well, I don't know if people who have her other books would find anything new in this one, since this author likes to repeat stuff and the such, and, the last chapter of this book, "Bubble, Bubble, Toil and Trouble (Food and Beverage Magic)," has now been published as its own little book.
So, did I think this book was fun and informative? Yes, but I wouldn't say its a must-have. In it, it has hints of glamour, simple folk spells, kitchen witchery, and the such, which is always good if you wanna feel magical, or just wanna solve a problem by using magic.

This book is probably good for kitchen witches, and similar folk.

1 out of 5 stars no knight in shining armor............2005-12-07

like the other reviewer-the "hero" of this book threw me off it-I quit about 60 pages in.

A truly unlikeable male lead. This knight, who is also of wizard blood-is vain, arrogant, controlling and cruel. He has no problem with going to Scotland, taking over a castle, nearly killing three young boys when he first gets there, threatening to hang any scottish person who vandalizes his property, throwing out the dead crusaders betrothed and her toddler-until he sees her, of course, then he decides he'll keep her around for a "tup", then, in his words, send her on her way!?!

I like reading medievels-and do not mind the knight who must be hard on the battlefield. But everyone wants a knight to be honorable off it-and this one definately not.

1 star for a slew of truly unlikeable characters that make this book pretty much unreadable for me.

                3 out of 5 stars Unlovable..........2003-10-31

I have enjoyed the author's previous books "A Falcon's Heart" and "This Dangerous Magic" but I just could not like this one. The Middle Ages is one of my favorite periods, especially when the author is able to convey a feeling of realism to the story. This was not the case for "Wicked Charms." The hero was too arrogant and narcissistic to be likable, while the heroine, was too cought up in her own "made up" problems to really make an impact. Also, the fact that she sounded like a modern woman made it difficult to imagine she was actually from the 12th century. I was never able to get into this book, barely finishing it. If you are a fan of Bertrice Small, Patricia Ryan, or Elizabeth Chadwick; SKIP this one.

5 out of 5 stars deep medieval romance.......2003-09-18

In 1180 twelve years old William Aiden Brinlaw knows he disappoints his father because males don't do magic though he has power. Thus William decides to become a knight. He visits the Spirit of the Cave to tell her of his decision, but she scoffs at his denial insisting the first wizard in a thousand generations should be proud of his magical prowess before imbedding a dragon onto William's skin.

Sixteen years later, William, who calls himself Aiden, is to marry Prince John's sister Katherine if he wins back Glencairn for the English. The castle is in independent Scotland, but its English lord just died in the Crusades. At Glencairn, Aiden finds a major surprise when he meets Mistress Evelyn and her infant son sired by the previous lord. An even greater surprise comes when Aiden falls in love with this enchantress who reciprocates his deepest feelings. However, love may not prove strong enough as John will have something violent to say and the Scots including her three nephews want the usurper either out of the country or dead.

Fans of deep medieval romances with a touch of fantasy elements will appreciate this delightful twelfth century tale. The story line grips the audience due to the embattled lead couple. Evelyn is intrepid and intelligent while Aiden is a unique protagonist with a neurotic belief he can never live up to his sire (or his older brother) due to his wizardry abilities though he occasionally makes use of magic. He makes the tale special and fun as he adds interesting elements on top of what would be a typical period romance.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable for helping kids read.......2003-10-30

I tutor first graders and have found this book an invaluable resource. It's a great source for ideas for making learning fun and a positive experience. It's helped me get away from the deadly drills and the frustration that goes along with it, and offers me new inspiration. Recommended for anyone trying to teach a young child to read.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for learning difficulties.......2003-10-10

I wish I had this book when my children were learning to read. There are a wide variety of fun games to help children learn to read, whether they have a learning difficulty or not. I've given a copy to my daughter's 2nd grade teacher to use in her classroom. I keep my copy in the car for long drives to play word games. It is a terrific, fun to use book.
