Book Description
Published to overwhelming critical acclaim, this extraordinary collection of short stories established A. M. Homes as one of the most provocative and daring writers of her generation. Here you'll find the cult classic "A Real Doll," the tale of a teenage boy's erotic obsession with his sister's favorite doll; "Adults Alone," which first introduced Paul and Elaine, the crack-smoking yuppie couple whose marriage careens out of control in Homes's novel Music for Torching; and "Looking for Johnny," in which a kidnapped boy, having failed his abductor's expectations, is returned home.
Brilliantly conceived, sharply etched, and exceptionally satisfying, these stories explore the American dream in ways you're not likely soon to forget. Working in Kodacolor hues, Homes offers an uncanny picture of a surreal suburbia-outrageous and utterly believable.
Customer Reviews:
Nobody is Safe.......2007-07-18
A.M. Homes brings the reader inside places they may not want to be. Each character in these short stories are memorable, unusual, and on the edge of a kind of yearning, longing, and desire to attain something beyond their reach. Thus, Home's characters will resonate with readers--because in actuality, we are continually grasping onto the ungraspable, thinking ghastly thoughts, fantasizing about things we keep secret, especially events from our childhood.
Reading "The Safety of Objects" is like peeking through somebody's window watching them undress. Each piece of clothing removed, reveals something more delicious about their sins and their naughty obsessions.
The reader will think--"Well, this is quite unnatural." A little boy who'd rather stay with his kidnapper than go home; a dad thinking about a 15 year old girl's fresh body; a fat teenager fantasying about her fat jiggling while having sex; a mother murdering her vegetative son, and a young boy jacking off to a Barbie doll.
But in truth, Homes is only showing us things we already know, have done, or have thought about. Actually, it's quite natural if we're being honest with ourselves. It's exceptionally believable.
"The Safety of Objects" is surprising, witty, intelligent, sexy, unnerving, and explosively authentic. Whether we admit it or not, we are all guilty of doing something behind closed doors that others would be shocked and stunned by. Homes just happens to write our dirty, little thoughts on paper.
Embarrassed for her children, evoked a laughing mockery of the author.......2006-05-15
Alright, the first two stories are interesting, hence the deuce dropped for the stars. However this is not suburbia, this is hacked up dreck that manages to be under and overdone contemporary malarkey. To wit:
Kids don't fantasize about Barbie and then masturbate in Ken's head three times...parents don't send their kids to Florida and all the sudden start smoking crack...pedophiles do not try to fill the void of a rolling stone father and get angry when the captive doesn't play son...and 'Chunky in Heat' satisfying herself, completely naked, in the backyard as her lover, the neighbor child, wonders around in the back calling for her and her mother comes home and just asks her to help bring in the groceries....see, I just saved you from having to read this abomination of taste and decency, this abortion of good writing and an engaging story. You can do me a favor by clicking the "this review was not helpful" button....idiot.
Oh, and I'm sure there are exceptions, and this stuff does happen, but Homes never explicitly states that what she is writing about is autobiographical.
Rural America like you've never read it before!.......2005-04-08
This is not a typical book about a standard American suburban families! The characters in Safety in Objects are odd and disarming. The stories are dark, the language sharp and the dialogue is crisp. A.M. Homes has written tales that are bound to become cult classics. My favorite stories are "Slumber Party," "A Real Doll," "Adults Alone," and "Jim Train." As said earlier, these are not stories about conventional families in rural America. These stories will make you think and perhaps even offend some readers. This is not for the faint at heart. Holmes is a fantastic writer and I look forward to reading more work by this author.
Peculiar People.......2004-12-19
In a series of skillfully constructed short stories, A. M. Homes has unveiled with great élan the frightening underside of suburbia. The characters run the gamut from a disappointed pedophile to a lascivious obese girl, from a responsible mother gone wild on a weekend away from her children to a teen boy who becomes strangely attracted to his sister's Barbie. However, revealing any more about these stories would be unseemly, as the degenerate twists are part of their seductive powers.
Despite the shocking premises, the basic situations and feelings evoked are often universal - making this book a somewhat uneasy read. The reader does not want to identify with these characters, but Homes, with laser-like precision, forces the reader to just such apperception. Reading "Safety of Objects" left me alternately paralyzed with laughter and oddly nauseous - a true mark of genius! This book is the first I've read by Homes, but I'm already eagerly anticipating the next.
Beautiful imagery, intensely psychological.......2004-06-28
I purchased this after watching the beautiful, artful movie adaptation of this collection of short stories. What surprised me most when reading "The Safety of Objects" was how the movie so deftly combined the stories into one coherent drama, using the haunting imagery and psychological trauma interwoven throughout what seems on the surface to be a very disparate group of stories. I liked this book, although I am not sure if I would have liked it quite as much had I not seen the movie beforehand? But, the book has its merits. It rips the roof off of the suburban houses & shows the disillusionment and pathos within, and in this regard, goes down well-worn paths, but the author provides provocative scenes & memorable, highly believable characters along the way.
Book Description
The Ada 2005 Reference Manual combines the International Standard ISO/IEC 8652/1995(E) for the programming language Ada with the corrections of the Technical Corrigendum 1 approved by ISO in February 2001 and with the Amendment 1 expected to be approved by ISO in late 2006 or early 2007. Both the Technical Corrigendum 1 and the Amendment 1 list only the changes made to the International Standard.
The Ada 2005 Reference Manual incorporates these changes in the overall standard text and thus will replace the former versions as an indispensable working companion for anybody using Ada professionally or learning and studying the language systematically. In naming this version, we have chosen the vernacular term Ada 2005 used by the Ada community to refer to the interesting extensions made to the language Ada by the Amendment 1.

Excellent Writer.......1999-03-09
I finally got a chance to read Homes after hearing a lot past two years. As touted, she is the real thing, along with Jeffrey Eugenides and Rick Moody. The future of literature is here, forget Ellis and Coupland. An excellent collection, more dynamic then Gaitskill's, somewhat similar...
Fascinating and disturbing.......1998-01-28
Tight, well-written short stories about contemporary life. A unique, compelling new voice in fiction.

Book Description
Ada 95, the enhanced version of the Ada programming language, is now in place and has attracted much attention in the community since the International Standard ISO/IEC 8652:1995(E) for the language was approved in 1995. The Ada 95 Rationale comes in four parts. The introductory part is a general discussion of the scope and objectives of Ada 95 and its major technical features. The second part contains a more detailed step by step account of the core language. The third part consists of several annexes addressing the predefined environment and specialized application areas. Finally, the three appendices of the fourth part are devoted to the upward compatibility with Ada 83, a few changes since the drafts of the standard were made public, and a summary of requirements.

There is the official Ada 95 standard, and then there is this campanion book that explains WHY the various parts of the standard are as they are and what other options were considered.
But this is *NOT* a beginner book.

Book Description
C++ is still one of the most powerful programming languages with an amazing list of features. However, many new languages and programming paradigms have arisen, so the choice of the best environment for specific applications becomes more difficult. Therefore, the main question of this book is how to apply capabilities of new concepts to C++. The book covers topics like Object Persistence, Reflection, Value Observation, Event Calling, Garbage Collection and even Thread Safety. For applying these abilities the approach of intelligent data containers, called properties, is picked up. Furthermore, in scope of this book, a template-based C++ Container Library, which implements the mentioned concepts, has been developed. Its name Property Set Library (PSL) is based on the used property approach, and its structure and way of implementation is also described in detail. This book is not only for C++ programmers who are interested in details about usable techniques, the freely available library can also be used practically.

Comme ci comme ca.......2006-09-13
Lady Lupin, lover of cocktails, parties, and fast motor cars, finds herself married to a charming and thoughtful vicar. Unfortunately, his parish is located in an obsure and unimportant part of the country - to call it a backwater would be to flatter it.
Just as Lady Lupin is settling into her new home (complete with competative women heading up various girl guides, mother's assocation, you-name-it organizations), her husband's curate is killed.
Here enters the mystery. Unfortunately, it really isn't much of one. The majority of the book is about Lady Lupin and how she deals with other people, domestics, guests, misunderstandings, etc. All very interesting, sometimes charming, and sometimes amusing. But as far as the mystery goes, there is very little action on it after the curate is killed.
I'm not sure if I'm being clear, but this is one of those mysteries where the murder takes place, then there is a lot of interpersonal/character developement in the middle in the guise of sleuthing, and then the killer is unmasked at the end.
There is no slowly revealing and adding new clues along the way, no additional happenings (perhaps a second killing) to deepen the puzzle, really no puzzle, per se, at all.
Not added to the "favorites" list.......2006-04-10
This book began like gangbusters. I laughed so hard my sides were hurting. But...that became a problem, at least for me. I read a mystery basically for the mystery solving, the details, the revealing character traits of those involved. Lady Lupin Hastings is SO completely scatterbrained that I don't know how she could ever get herself from one destination to another much less solve a murder. After a while I found myself thinking she was too silly, too fey, too absentminded, too inane to be considered a real (even in fiction) person. Actually, she was not the one who solved the crime.
I have read that Lady Lupin settles down quite a bit in the other books in which she is featured. Surely that has to be a good thing, probably a very good thing. Humor is great in a mystery but not when it totally overtakes the story.
Wonderful and Funny.......2003-10-25
I enjoyed this book so much. Would make a wonderful play, the dialog is witty and quick and the mystery intrigues you. A real British classic. Don't miss it, I can't wait to read more.
Agatha Christie meets Amelia Bedelia.......2002-04-15
Rue Morgue has done mystery fans a favor with their reprints of vintage British mysteries, and I found this story by Joan Coggin (known also for her school stories written as Joanna Lloyd - sadly, these are long OP) absolutely charming. Lady Lupin and her friend Duds are inane detectives but are very funny and well intentioned. Vicarage life is depicted in a way that seems both realistic and hysterical. I can't wait to read more.

The Tattooed Map: A Novel
ASIN: 0393046338 |
Book Description
An illustrated tour de force and surreal dream-come-to-life for all those who love art, passion, fine wine, and Griffin and Sabine. An island republic located in the Mid-Atlantic, somewhat south of Bermuda, between the Sea of Clouds and the Sea of the Unseen, the Republic of Dreams is populated by all those who have an instinctive dislike of the narrow limitations of common sense-dreamers, artists, eccentrics, and poets. They love love, youth, old age, beauty, splendor, wisdom, generosity, music, song, the feast, and the dance. In this spectacular dream landscape-where few places are not commemorated by an artist's inspiration, a philosopher's wit, or a poet's insight-author/artist/narrator G. Garfield Crimmins rediscovers his alter ego, Victor La Nuage, and his sensuous lover, Nadja La Claire. Together, with the help of the elusive Dr. Prometheus, they seek to evade the machinations of the life-denying, imagination-stifling enemy of the Republic of Dreams and its citizens: the armed and dangerous League of Common Sense. Joyously illustrated in Deco-Dada-Surrealist spirit, and complete with souvenir maps, telegrams, postcards, a poetic license, and a passport for return voyages, The Republic of Dreams gives escape literature a good name. A glorious affirmation of the dreamer within, it is a great gift for one's inner self and for many kindred spirits.
Customer Reviews:
Mental candy.......2004-03-07
I bought Crimmins's book five years ago and, as an awkward teenager uncertain as to whether or not to consider my dreamy idealism a virtue, I thought it life-changing and profound.
And now? I still am glad that I bought The Republic of Dreams -- the art and the storyline still hold power to carry me away every now and again. It's a fantastic, idealistic novel, but unlike most fantasy novels it is set in a contemporary western society, which in some ways makes it all the more accessible. The book is stuffed with photographs and toys such as a "Poetic License," a passport, postcards, telegrams, public notices, examples of banknotes, and the like, all of which are reminiscent of the printed matter and other props of our daily lives. For inhabitants of a postindustrial society, these little touches all make it seem like you've entered a cross between a fairy tale world and your humdrum everyday world. There are many photographs and pictures, which create impressions of the daily life of this strange and sensual Republic. The narrative invites the reader to live vicariously through the characters' artistic and indulgent exploits.
On the other hand, a lot of the content of The Republic of Dreams is rather unoriginal. Despite its unabashed celebration of life's pleasures, the storyline is predictable and doesn't particularly grab you with pithy insights the way the best fantasy fiction does. A good portion of the artwork is derivative; it is still beautiful, but Crimmins could have done a lot more with his artistic abilities. And he is a good artist, as his surreal illustrations demonstrate.
So have a look at The Republic of Dreams. It may not be terribly original or insightful, but it will indulge your artistic-dreamer self.
Woderful Surreal Art-Novel.......2003-01-25
I found this book on a remainder table and bought it on a lark. Boy am I glad I did! If you've ever been captivated by surrealist art you have to get this book. It will give you a whole new philosophy of life based on freedom, poetry and irrationality. Better than any of the Griffin/Sabine books. Buy it. Read it. Discover the treasures hidden within your irrational life.
Not Greenwich Village, This is an Island.......2003-01-02
Not to be confused with the book about Greenwich Village, this marvelous book is about an island republic. Hard to describe in words -- I recommend you take the trip.
Republic of Dreams.......2002-08-25
Impossible to review completely, since the book I received had at least 5 pages torn out of it, which made it difficult to follow the "storyline," if there was one.
freshman surrealism?.......2002-07-16
generic illustrations which are okay, but the writing is just awful. It's like he took two guides to surrealist games and just filled in the blanks.

A great book for women going through the "change"!.......2004-06-29
This book is a lot like a "What to Expect When You're Expecting" for those of us going through menopause. It's so easy to read and to find whatever information you need about pretty much anything having to do with menopause and the time leading up to it (which I now know is called "perimenopause"). Every woman going through the change should get this book!
A must for anyone going through perimenopause.......2004-05-13
After looking through many books on perimenopause, I found this to be one of the most comprehensive and the easiest to read. The book is very balanced and gave me a much better picture of the issues that we face as we go through perimenopause and the evidence for the different remedies available to help. The authors cover hormones, natural remedies, and other therapies in a way that I could clearly understand what we do and don't know about them and what the advantages and disadvantages of using the different approaches. I felt that the book was right on the mark in so many areas. It was really helpful because I was having problems with my periods and when I went to see my doctor, I already knew what to expect and what tests would be done and why. It helped greatly ease my mind because I felt so much better prepared. This is definately a book to keep on hand as a reference.
Great book!.......2004-03-29
This book is exceptionally well written. The authors have taken complex topics and have explained them in down-to-earth terms. Any woman going through this adventure can find herself on these pages and understand what and why things are happening as they are.
The Book for Ladies in Menopause.......2004-03-26
I highly recomend this book, Healthy Transitions, by Dr. Edmund S. Kim. I shared this book with my other church friends and advocate it to all women. I especially enjoyed the section on What's With My Moods? Ch. 4 in the book.
Healthy Advise.......2004-03-26

ASIN: 0737305118 |
Book Description
The ebb and flow of hormonal balance has a huge effect on all aspects of each woman's life. As women approach perimenopause, these effects become more pronounced as ever-increasing numbers of women are learning. This new edition teaches women, particularly those approaching middle age, how to treat related physical and emotional problems and embrace these life changes as positive, liberating experiences.
Customer Reviews:
A useful read.......2006-06-30
This is the second copy of this book I have bought. I loaned the first copy to a woman who thought she was in perimenopause and never got it back. This book is a practical guide to help women recognize and deal with difficult issues in their life--premenstrual symptoms and "the change." It is a useful read for all women.
Book Description
The perimenopausal years can start as early as age thirty-five and last for up to ten years. This transitional period in a woman's life has often been misdiagnosed or ignored. Now Stephanie Bender, an expert in women's hormonal health, sounds a wake-up call for the confusing years before menopause, which require special emotional, dietary, and health guidance.
The Power of Perimenopause explains how symptoms such as irregular cycles, night sweats and insomnia, decreased libido, memory lapses, and mood swings can be traced to fluctuating hormones. It gives detailed recommendations on how to use both conventional and alternative approaches to lessen symptoms, including the most up-to-date research and new treatments. Bender also goes beyond medical advice to show women how all facets of their lives, from diet to attitude to lifestyle, can be transformed to make this an exciting and productive phase. Perimenopause is a time when women can reconsider their beliefs and priorities with newfound wisdom--perhaps discarding outmoded images of female beauty and examining their relationships with lovers and family on a deeper level.
The Power of Perimenopause explores this neglected age with practical ways to enhance the quality of all areas of women's lives.
Customer Reviews:
Great Informative Read.......2005-01-14
When this life transition smacks you in the face, you want to read anything you can about this occurance. While this was not the best book I found, it was very helpful. Certainly worth buying used.
OK, but where's the beef?.......2001-11-03
Filled with stories of patients, fan mail from readers, and self-serving descriptions of dialogs with women. The text is poorly organized so it is difficult to find and research specific symptoms.
The answer to most symptoms, such as insomnia, are herbal remedies which may or may not work, depending on the woman. There is a discussion of hrt, but you can learn more reading the latest issue of Ladies Home Journal, or some other woman's magazine.
The book was disappointing on several levels, but if you like to commiserate with other women (and their spouses) going thru this life cycle - and who doesn't? - then this book may make you feel better.
No What I Expected.......2000-09-30
I did not get from this book what I thought was needed from a woman in her mid 50's. Very sorry I purchased it.
WELL BALANCED & INFORMATIVE............2000-08-15
THANK YOU Ms. Bender! This was like reading the last 10 years of my life....There is so much help in this 1 incredible book, I hardly know what to praise. It's very balanced giving information all many aspects of perimenopause & ways to treat it. She really stresses, that it's natural & not everyone's is the same. So there is some trial & error in finding what works for "YOU", "no 1 pill & it's all gone." But she explains the WHY, & gives very good starting points to explore making it through what can be a very rough time, easier. I found myself cheered & looking forward to finding better ways for my own dealing with these changes. Some things as simple as WALK more... personally my dog will love it!
A Clear and Balanced View.......2000-04-17
I have done a great deal of research into perimenopause and this book is the most clearly written and informative book I have found. It nicely balances the most up-to-date traditional medical ideas with a realistic view of nutritional, natural and alternative possiblities. I learned more about hormone cycles, perimenopause symptoms, recommended tests and treatment alternatives from this book than any other source. If you even think that you may be going through the preliminary stages of menopause and want to understand what is happening to your body, buy this book.
