More Keenan is Keen!.......2006-01-31
Joe Keenan's second novel is even better than his first! The farce gets wilder, and it remains consistantly funny. Joe makes it look so effortless that he shames those of us who have turned our own hands to the comic novel and turned out lesser work than his. This time out Donald and Ivana Trump are satirically lampooned, or more accurately, harpooned, disguised by a microscopic veneer of fictionalization. This book is hysterical. If you don't laugh at it, I can only pity your humourless existence.
Another laugh-out-loud book by Keenan.......2003-08-05
This is a great follow up to Blue Heaven, which should be read first since they refer to some scenes in this book. The same cast of zany characters come to life again here, in equally as insane scenarios. Similar character acts comparison: Lucy and Ethel.
Even better than his first book.......2002-09-19
Even better than the first book, Keenan's humorous take on gays and New York is entertainment of the first rank. Anyone who can do analogies to Gershwin, Philip Glass and Charlotte Corday has lots going for him in my book. This time Philip Cavanaugh gets roped in by Gilbert Selwyn into an on-going feud between rival millionaire publishing magnates. Philip knows better than to get involved in another of Gilbert's schemes, but gets trapped by love--the initiator of the plot is this beautiful man named Tommy Parker who Philip falls madly for. Of course, Claire gets involved as well (without knowing Gilbert's involvement or the actual scheme) and the books is an exciting ride to the last page.
My only disappointment is that, as far as I know, Keenan hasn't written any other books. Someone hurry up and give that man a contract!

Joe Keenan's "Putting on the Ritz" is a novel that is like watching Rosalind Russell in "Auntie Mame", quick, witty, full of laughs and the perfect way to spend a rainy afternoon. It is a sequel to his first novel "Blue Heaven" and surpasses it with engaging characters and a dizzying plot that keeps you turning page after page. I have read the novel several times and enjoyed it more with each reading.
Now that Mr. Keenan has proved himself successful on television as a writer and producer for Frasier on NBC, perhaps he will take pity on his fiction fans, take a season off and catch us up on Philip Cavanaugh's latest adventures.
Please Joe, we want another book!

Does anyone know Joe Keenan personally? He has got to be convinced to keep this going. I can't tell you how many times I have read this and Blue Heaven - I simply never tire of them. Also, I am wondering if someone knows of other similarily genial books in this genre that I can get my hands on. I can't help but think that the rest will be disappointing knock-offs but I'm willing to try anything!

Quick trip down Mystery Lane.......2004-02-02
Marcia Muller has developed a formulaic approach in presenting the tales of her famous private eye, Sharon McCone. It seems to fit the bill - no deep psychological dramas (Elizabeth George) or alphabet soup (A is for ....), no coroners or little old ladies - just the unflappable McCone going about her business, solving crimes and getting involved in things she never planned.
This is a short read, a good whodunit where past sins have now stepped forward to claim their retribution. Interesting insight into the world of standup comedy.
The case of the disappearing comedienne.......2002-08-02
A criminal lawyer at All Souls Legal Cooperative is troubled by a convicted criminal who is on Death Row and has confessed to a murder. The confession is full of holes and the lawyer does not believe that Bobby Foster is really guilty. When he shares his concerns with PI Sharon McCone, she agrees to do some investigating into the situation. She decides that the only way to get Bobby off the hook is to find the person who did commit the murder. The case is two years old and Sharon fears that the trail has grown cold, but she perseveres in her investigation and interviews anyone who had any connection to the victim, Tracy Kostakos. She turns up some disturbing information about Tracy and begins to understand why she was the target for murder. This is a good addition to this series, and continues to develop the characters that Muller's fans have read about in previous books.
Better Than Average.......2000-08-14
I have read many of Ms. Muller's Sharon McCone mysteries. While there is, in my opinion, no danger that she will threaten the position of Arthur Conan Doyal and Agatha Christie at the top of the heap among mystery writers, I am clearly enjoying these stories or I wouldn't have read so many of them. Partly, I suppose, this comes from my familiarity with, and enjoyment of, her characters. McCone and the other denizens of the All Souls Legal Cooperative are, by now, all like old friends. Also, partly, it comes from San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area as the principal setting for the stories. The scenes she descibes are often familiar and, thus, easy to visualize. This applies especially to this book, parts of which are set in the area immediately south of Market Street in an area near where I once worked for several years.
Largely, though, I keep coming back because Muller writes entertaining stories. This one is no exception. In fact, I found this one to be somewhat better than her average story. Some, while still fun to read, aren't too difficult when it comes to putting your finger on the murderer. But in this one there were plenty of twists and turns before the story came to its final conclusion. At times, there was even some doubt about the crime. We have a convicted felon on death row but is catually Tracy dead? Or had she simply chosen to disappear? Or is somebody dead, but not Tracy?
My general rating for Sharon McCone mysteries is four stars in Amazon's system. This one I rate 4+.
Abundance of description shadows interesting storyline.......1999-05-18
Marcia Muller, the author of THE SHAPE OF DREAD, obviously put a lot of time into this book. Her commitment is apparent in two ways. 1. There is a lot of believable and factual information about prisons, murder investigations, comedy clubs, mental conditions, etc. Muller seems to have done a good amount of research on these topics because there is not doubt in the readers' mind that she is completely factual about everything surrounding the plot. 2. Muller seems to be not only committed to her excellent story line about a murdered comedian, but also committed to her thesaurus. At times, articulate adjectives and adverbs that were irrelevant to the plot overshadowed the excellent story line. As the reader, I felt that I didn't need to know that the building the main character walked into was khaki stucco surrounded by small palm trees in perfect rows. The reader would much rather know what the investigator was thinking, for example- Would Ms. McCone find Tracy Kostakos dead or alive? In conclusion, I believe that this book is a good read, only if you enjoy TONS of detail. Otherwise, chose a mystery novel that gives you the facts to attempt to solve the case yourself, not to decide whether the room has been interior decorated to your taste.

A must read book that deals with sexual problems in an easy and understandable way. A great read even for men that don't have sexual problems because it teaches them what to expect from life and not to give up. A far better book in my opinion is "Natural Penis Enlargement: New Methods of Avoiding and Curing Impotence, Premature Ejaculation, and Erectile Dysfunction Safely and Inexpensively. New ... No Pumps, No Pills and No Gadgets! Vol. 2" by Platinum Millennium, one of the best books on them market that i liked very much

Richard Milstein's simple yet effective title doesn't fail my expectations, i found out lots of things about sexual disorders and my own body that i did not know. Great title that I recommend for all that are searching for a minimal but crucial amount of information. For those who want more and better, i recommend" Volume II - Natural Penis Enlargement: New methods of avoiding and curing impotence, premature ejaculation, and erectile dysfunction safely and inexpensively. ... having some questions regarding the changes that men go through, I found this book to be a candid and well written book. the examples cited were pretty realistic. in comparision to some other books, this one was not burdened down with charts and diagrams that are often a bore or too complex for a lay person to absorb. was worth the purchase proce to me
Nothing beyond the basics.......2001-12-30
The book covers the basics of impotence: physcial and psychological causes. The authors seem to emphasize the psychological more so. Yet their therapeutic suggestions in this area are just about nonexistent.
Their discussion of Viagra is just poor; it is not connected well to their previous chapters. What physical and emotional problems can Viagra overcome and to what degree? Or how long do the effects of Viagra last; all that is stated is how long it takes to become effective. Something is needed beyond the minimal.
The book just does not go past the first level in anything. All in all, I would certainly hope that there is a better book out there for the lay person.
