5 out of 5 stars An excellant book to challenge the Christian walk! .......2006-11-20

This book uncovers the lies of the enemy and brings you to your knees in repentance! I am so thankful for this thought provoking book that wakes up the sleeping Church to be able to stand in these days "girded with Truth!"
This is a must have - for anyone who is serious about their Christian walk.

1 out of 5 stars I don't get it..........2006-09-11

I've read through the section entitled "The Religious Spirit" twice now, and I still don't know what he's talking about. My impression is that he's referring to those who hold fast to God's original Ten Commandments--those who still believe that there indeed is such thing as 100% truth and who are "overly paranoid" about false doctrine creeping into the church. I agree that nobody who calls him or herself a Christian should have a spirit of criticizm toward others, and I also agree that we can't get to heaven through our own goodness or works. But the Bible presents an absolute standard, that our life goal is sanctification, which is often translated as "perfection" (Deut. 18:13, Col. 1:28). I realize the evangelical Christians have a burden for "grace alone" (does this mean we should not bother obeying the Ten Commandments anymore? "By no means!" says Paul--Rom. 6:2, NIV), but doesn't Rev. 14:12 define the "saints" as "they that keep the commandments of God" as well as the "faith of Jesus"?

But, maybe I am misreading the author's intent. But I don't know, because his wording is so vague.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars excellent character development.......2004-12-04

The cast of characters in this book was outstanding. The story line itself had adequate suspense but it was the character portrayals that made it of interest. It was also a smooth , fast read.

4 out of 5 stars You Can Go Home Again (But Beware the Consequences)!.......2004-10-26

Lynn Schulman moves with her family back to her hometown of Riverside, NY and finds herself wrapped up in the murder of a friend. The lead detective turns out to be a former boyfriend and as the case unfolds, Lynn finds herself more involved than she would like. With more depth than the average murder mystery, this book illustrates how past history affects the present.

4 out of 5 stars If you liked Mystic River............2004-09-16

I thought this was better, in that it was not quite as dark. Without giving away any of the plot, who wants to have a book that ends on such a downer. There may or may not stil be some down in this one, but it wrapped up as nicely as possible. And it was not so frustrating....the plot was not cliche. You know, like just when someone is on to a discovery, they are killed, or when a bad guy is doing something bad and you say- why can't anyone figure him out, etc. This was intelligently written, light years more that this review.

5 out of 5 stars Characters who Really Live and Breathe.......2004-09-09

By far Peter Brauner's best, the book compares favorably to something like Updike's RABBIT REDUX.

On every page I had to pause to remind myself that I don't actually live in Riverside, the New York suburb where the action is largely set, but far away in California. That's how convincingly he draws you into the story.

Most writers have no idea how to integrate the working lives of their characters into the give and take of a thriller. Here I was totally taken in by Barry Schulman's working world in the high concept life of a biotech company, by Lynn's photography and the way a reader could actually visualize many of her best pictures, by Mike's life as a small town detective with a big city style crime to solve.

There was a lot of class stuff too, which again most American novelists can't handle. And most of all, the suspense which got to be so overpowering I didn't want to do anything but finish the book. The 9/11 material was handled with distinction; I liked Barry falling all over the commuter who, because he wasn't seen on the train for some time, was believed to have perished at the World Trade Center.

5 out of 5 stars The Uncomfortable Truth.......2004-02-28

With Slow Motion Riot, Blauner reinvented the urban crime novel back when the so-called New Realists were still trying to cop a puff on Elmore Leonard's cigarettes. With his newest book, he stretches into new territory and takes on suburban life in the new century with the same unsparing eye. Unlike some other readers, I felt the 9/11 references were skillfully done and heartfelt, without stooping to sentimentality. And the writing is carefully wrought and richly textured from line to line. Readers looking for phony tough guy heroes and breathless escapism should look elsewhere. This is a fine American crime writer telling uncomfortable truths.

      Book Description

The ninth novel of Gail Bowen’s popular series finds Canada’s favourite amateur sleuth, Joanne Kilbourn, on holiday at a cottage borrowed from a lawyer friend, one of a cluster of summer homes owned by lawyers from the same prestigious firm. When one of them kills himself the night after a long talk with Joanne, she is pushed into investigating just what her neighbours are involved with, an investigation that has startling – and fatal – consequences.

Bowen’s depiction of this community of lawyers, each in his or her way now divorced from the ideals of justice and mercy that once motivated them all, is both compassionate and hard-nosed. There is Zack, the charming but controlling paraplegic; Blake and Lily, whose daughter, Gracie, struggles to keep her dignity as her parents’ marriage falls apart; Noah, who would rather practise carpentry than the law, and his wife, Delia, who is consumed by worry about the firm. The mounting stress among these lawyers is palpable as Joanne delves into their lives. And Joanne faces her own personal anxieties too when she discovers that her former lover, Inspector Alex Kequahtooway, is mixed up in what seems to be some very sordid legal business.

5 out of 5 stars A stage drama of the end of Walt Whitman's life.......2004-07-18

Judith Grace's Good-bye My Fancy: With Walt Whitman In His Last Days is a stage drama of the end of Walt Whitman's life based upon verbatim transcriptions of conversations he had with his secretary and friend, Horace Traubel. These conversations were faithfully recorded by Traubel who visited Whitman every day at the famed poet's home. Grace also draws upon a selection of poems and letters by Whitman and his friends to create a thoroughly engaging dialogue so skillfully crafted that the reader has a feeling of being there and sharing in the very presence of a great man. Good-bye My Fancy is enthusiastically recommended reading. It can only be hoped that sometime this brilliant dramatization will appear on stage or screen.

Walter Duffy was the world's leading bird photographer until an accident crippled him. So Boston lawyer Brady Coyne, an old friend, makes a point of visiting him in his bird-filled garden terrace--until the day Brady finds him lying next to his crutches, fatally bashed in the back of the head. Was it an accident or murder? Where is Walter's college-age son, who was also his much abused household helper? Who keeps calling Brady at odd hours, tipping him off to upcoming arson fires? And what's it all got to do with a packet of letters allegedly written by Meriwether Lewis?

This is Brady Coyne's 19th solo outing, and fans will find their hero just as likable, even-tempered, and incorruptible as ever. They'll also appreciate his growing relationship with companion Eve Banyon (who may be unrealistically gorgeous and devoted, but whose presence gives rise to one of the best sex-in-a-thunderstorm scenes you'll read this year). The suspense in A Fine Line is on the mild side, and the slightly disconnected plot concludes with a too-neat wrap-up. But you'll still enjoy reading Tapply for his fully fleshed people, his evocation of Boston, and his lean prose, which--as always--goes down as smoothly as 16-year-old single malt. --Nicholas H. Allison

                Book Description

Walt Duffy spent his life traveling the world, documenting the beauty and wonder of nature through the lens of a camera. But there was nothing natural about the ugly way he died, his skull fractured by an unknown assailant, his broken body left sprawled right in his own backyard. The irony wasn't lost on Boston attorney Brady Coyne. He first met Duffy while handling his divorce a decade earlier, and their relationship evolved into a working friendship. He knew Duffy well, or so Brady thought. That belief is about to be put to the test when Coyne is brought in for questioning by both the local police and the FBI, who reveal Duffy's ties to a notorious ecoterrorist group that is currently setting fires to homes and offices around the Boston area. And when Brady begins to get mysterious calls in the middle of the night, warning of the next fire to be set, he knows that he has become an unwilling pawn in a chess game with the deadliest of consequences.

                5 out of 5 stars A Fine Line.......2004-01-07

"A Fine Line" is the 19th Brady Coyne novel by William G. Tapply. Walt Duffy, a renowned ornithologist who was left paralyzed by a fall, asks his attorney and friend, Brady Coyne to deliver some letters supposedly written by Meriwether Lewis to Benjamin Frye, a rare book dealer, for authentication. Shortly after Brady delivers the letters, he finds Walt Duffy dead in his backyard. The police think it is murder. Duffy's son, Ethan, is also missing. Benjamin Frye gives the letters back to Brady, and shortly thereafter Frye is found dead in a warehouse fire. Brady feels that his life may be in danger because it appears someone will stop at nothing to obtain those rare letters. Brady needs to find Ethan Duffy and the murderer who appears to be a member of the radical ecoterrorist group, SOLF (Spotted Owl Liberation Front.) "A Fine Line" is also important concerning Brady's relationship with Evie. This is an excellent novel by William Tapply. Even after 19 Coyne novels, his plots are fresh and the suspense is riveting. "A Fine Line" is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A fine Brady Coyne novel.......2002-11-17

Every Tuesday, Boston lawyer Brady Coyne visits his friend Walt Duffy, once the foremost bird photographer in the country until he too had a bad fall and ended up a paraplegic. Now he lives in his Boston townhouse and spends much of his time bird watching in his garden. He lives with his college age son Ethan and their dog Henry. On Brady's latest visit, Walt asks him to get some letters appraised by antiquarian book dealer and fellow bird lover Ben Fyre.

The next day Walt asks Brady to visit him at his home but when the lawyer arrives he finds his friend/client dead with the police calling it a homicide. Ethan is nowhere to be found and Ben insists Brady take back the letters. When Ben is murdered too and Ethan remains missing, Brady finds himself in the middle of a FBI investigation involving eco-terrorists.

A Brady Coyne novel is always a treat and A FINE LINE is especially fine. It's cute watching Brady taking care of Nathan's dog Henry and decide whether or not he's brave enough to make a commitment to his girlfriend Eve. The plot is a clever adventure in misdirection and readers will find themselves caught up in the non-stop action of William G. Tapply's latest work.

In all of the warhammer stuff there is repetition. I guess you just have to get used to that. The writting in this book was especially good though, and I think it is far better than most of the warhammer material. If you have all of the tabletop army books you probably won't find too much new information here, but if you don't this is a great book. Here you get everything in one place and quite a bit of new info. All in all, I would recommend this over most other supplements. The book was also free of typos and editing errors, which made reading it enjoyable instead of annoying. I would recommend it, but don't pay the full retail price. Get it here, on ebay, or somewhere you won't have to pay over $20.00. I liked it but not enough to pay $30.00 dollars (or more).

The Young Athlete aims to help the parents of more than 30 million U.S. kids who play organized sports to keep them safe and healthy--physically, socially, and psychologically. The book is not just about sports medicine; in fact, only about one-third of the book addresses avoiding and treating injuries. The rest explores essential issues such as how to be a good sports parent, hallmarks of good coaching, nutrition and nutritional supplements, and keeping values and perspective intact (including topics such as preventing sports from taking over the family's life, good sportsmanship, and ethics).

This book also offers helpful and often provocative insights into the young athlete's world. For example, although most proclaim that cheating is wrong, many athletes, coaches, and parents justify "what can we get away with?" behavior. Checklists, bulleted lists, and quotes from parents about their problems make it easy to skim for pertinent and interesting information about this and many other issues.

Author Jordan D. Metzl, M.D., cofounder and medical director of the Hospital for Special Surgery's Sports Medicine Institute for Young Athletes and a former member of the U.S. Olympic Committee Medical Advisory Board, has been team physician for several schools, so you can be assured of the validity of the book's content. Highly recommended for parents of school-age athletes. --Joan Price

3 out of 5 stars A sports doctor's complete guide for parents by Jordan Metzl.......2007-07-20

I though I had done that already. So, once again, the book arrived on time but the sender failed to tell that this was a LIBRARY BOOK. It was full of stickers with library numbers on the cover and inside the book itself. Had I known this, I would not have bought it. It's one thing to buy a "used" book. It's another, to buy a used book with stickers and notations. So, I am not very pleased and I emailed the sender upon receipt.

5 out of 5 stars Every parent of a young athlete should ready this book........2005-11-30

I have four daughters, and as I read this book I alternated between thinking "That's exactly right based on my experience!" and "Wow, I'm very glad to know that!"

The range and depth of information is impressive, and Dr. Metzl's writing style makes you just keep reading once you start.

This book should be required reading by all sporting parents. I can promise you'll be a better parent for having read it.

5 out of 5 stars a book full of mazel.......2005-03-01

When my son slipped during a recent curling match, I was worried that he'd never feel comfortable comepting gain, but Dr. Metzl's excellent book gave my wife and me the information we needed to get our son back in the game. This book is a must-read for parents with kids in sports. It does for sports injuries what chicken soup and chopped liver do for the soul.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Superb Book.......2002-11-27

This is one of the best health books, and one of the best parenting books, I have ever read. Dr. Metzl's style is both authoritative and engaging. I highly recommend this book.

Dr. Metzl clearly articulates the do's and don'ts of sports medicine and there impact to young athlete's. He has a dry sense of humor that makes the book an enjoyable read. A must have for parents with active, athletic children.
