Book Description

A moving love story set in the Canadian wilderness, Mrs. Mike is a classic tale that has enchanted millions of readers worldwide. It brings the fierce, stunning landscape of the Great North to life-and tenderly evokes the love that blossoms between Sergeant Mike Flannigan and beautiful young Katherine Mary O'Fallon.

"It is the personality of Sgt. Mike blowing through this account like a clear breeze that gives it a refreshing quality. Everyone's dream of a cop, he was also a romantic and understanding husband, the fondest of fathers; a man of honor and humor." (New York Times)

"Mrs. Mike...is the story of the start of young love, its growth to maturity, and its acceptance of a dangerous, hard, but enthralling life." (Los Angeles Herald-Express)

5 out of 5 stars What happened to Katherine Mary Flannigan?.......2007-07-27

I was given this book my mother as a teenager and just loved it. Although I haven't read it in years, I noticed it at bookstore recently and wondered yet again what happened to Katherine Mary? Well, I do research as part of my job, and decided to search the net and here's what I found:

Katherine Mary wrote her own book, published in 1951, called "The Faith of Mrs. Kelleen" It's a novelized version of her Irish great-aunt Honora Kelleen's story about trying to prove the innocence of her son. It's available used on Amazon. If you are willing to buy the archived NY Times review, as I did, you will see a pen-and-ink drawing of Katherine Mary, then approx. 61, that accompanies the review.

Also, through the NY Times archives (and also for money) I found a short obit released by the Canadian Press. According to the obit, she died on August 9, 1954 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where she was visiting friends and relatives. At that time, she was living in Vancouver. She also evidently remarried, since the obit called her Mrs. John P. Knox, and referred to Sgt. Mike as the man she was first married to, and that she met the Freedmans as a widow. For such a short obit, there were some jumbled facts...for instance it said she was 54 when she died (if you go by the timeline in Mrs. Mike, she should have been 64) but that she met the Freedmans in her late 50s. It didn't list any children or other relatives nor did it mention her supposed husband. I searched other online newspaper archives, but that's all I found. No doubt, there is more complete obit in a Canadian newspaper somewhere, it's just not available online.

There is a post on this review site that says the authors told a fan that Sgt. Mike died of appendicitis and Katherine Mary moved to California and became a nurse and never remarried. Now, it seems that she did. If Mr. and Mrs. Freedman still monitor these reviews, perhaps they'll let us know if what I found is correct. Maybe sometime I'll put up wikipedia page for the book. I'm sure we won't be the last people to wonder what happened!

I understand from yet another archived review of "Mrs. Mike" that the Freedman's own love story is pretty compelling. I wonder if Mrs. Freedman met Mrs. Flannigan while dealing with her medical problems. Knowing the backstory to Mrs. Mike would be satisfying for all its fans.

I still feel connected to the Mrs. Mike story and to those who brought it alive. What a wonderful book!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book.......2007-07-12

This is probably at the top of my favorite book list. I read it in about 5 days and hated to put it down. I didn't want it to end. It is very well written, in my humble opinion. There are no curse words, no explicit sex scenes, just a great love story.

4 out of 5 stars an enjoyable light read.......2007-03-27

This book has the feel of a book written 60 years ago, in a good way. While this story has plenty of tragedy, it does have an innocence, and in many ways romanticizes a hard (and beautiful) life in northern Canada. This book has the feel of a young adult book rather than an adult book. I wish I had known about it when my children were younger - it would have been perfect to read to a 10-13 year old. It is a classic family novel. A nice follow-up to Little House on the Prairie. Much better, actually. As an adult, reading it for myself, it was a book I enjoyed, and it earns 4 stars for me, but it fell short of what I expect of a great novel. I'm glad I read it and I do recommend it to others, especially as an epic family read-aloud.

5 out of 5 stars Mrs. Mike - a hearwarming book .......2007-03-26

Mrs. Mike was a heartwarming book that really made me love it. The copy I read was an old one that my school library had and I just checked it out because I needed something to read in my next class. But I soon fell in love with it. Katherine and Mike were really wonderful people and their life was so hard but lovely. Katherine was so helpful and happy and Mike so strong and supportive as they lived in Canada miles away from anything. their adventures and happiness became mine as well, and I stayed up late in the night finishing it. I was so excited to find out in the end that there really was a Katherine and Mike O'Flannegan, and this book was based on them. I really think you'll enjoy reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Read many times over.......2007-03-08

The first time I read this book I was a young girl and since then, I have read it over and over and over. I have a copy of the first edition published and it is yellowed with age and time worn. I bought this paperback copy to preserve my original. This is one of the best books written of all time. It is not sugarcoated, yet not vulgar. It is about a girl who travels at the age of 16 to the snowy wilderness of Canada. She marries and life happens to her. The characters come alive, you can see the indians dancing, and you can feel her pain. Well written!

5 out of 5 stars I loved this Novel it's not Mrs. Mike It's the following era!.......2007-08-30

I thought the authors did a wonderful job of moving forward in a difficult story line and family line. A time table that I think catches so many Mrs. Mike followers off guard. The intention was not to do another Mrs. Mike or Mrs. Mike 2 episode. As they explained they did that already eons ago. For them it was to tell the next generations story and they did that with history intact. I thought wonderful and well written and I'm sad that so many people felt let down. I for one think the writing was good. While my husband would never read the type of story Mrs. Mike was he might read and enjoy the historic times brought out in this The Search for Joyful. I was a young teen when I read Mrs. Mike and not an assignment just a library check out. I fell in love with it didn't re-read it until my 50's. A lot of the romance and pain was no longer the same for me that it was as the teen. Yet I enjoyed the book and wanted to read it again before reading this next story. Hat's off to some wonderful writers who have given us two and possibly three great novels. For my next read is going to be their Kathy.....and so to you dear people thank you for finally getting round to the continuation of story. Thank you thank you thank you. At your ages many blessings to you for doing so makes it even more precious if not a bit precocious. An expression of behavior usually spent on the youth....and in your case young at heart. Such a delight you Freedman's have been!

5 out of 5 stars WOMEN CONFRONTING NEW FRONTIERS.......2007-03-28

Though many of Amazon's reviewers did not give this sequel favorable reviews, I think this book is far superior to the preceeding story. The two books have a very different flavor. The first book is like a romantic novel, while the second comes closer to being a respectable literary fare. The writing and plot of the second book offer at least as much depth and iterest as the first.
I think that if those who loved the first book are disappointed by its sequel, it has more to do with the fact that Mary Katherine and Mike Flannagan are minor characters in the second book. Be Joyful's daughter has at least as much moxie and depth as the her adoptive mother Mrs. Mike. Like her mother, she discovers who she is through much adversity, and is forced to answer many of life's enduring questions along the way. I think that Be Joyful's daughter is a more timeless and interesting person than her mother. I sincerely believe that the sequel is the superior of the two works. It is a more sophisticated story and perhaps therefore less accessible.

5 out of 5 stars The Sequel to My First Novel .......2007-03-14

I read Mrs. Mike when I was 7 years old and remember asking my Mother for help with some of the words. Since my 4 daughters and 5 granddaughters are also readers of everything they can get their hands on, I told them about my first book and decided to find a copy (which I did thru Amazon and the Book Service). "The Search for Joyful" arrived before my new/old copy of Mrs. Mike and I read it first. I was amazed that I remembered the history of the characters so vividly.

The story continues for Mrs. Mike thru her children in the sequel. The author writes an easy to follow, light hearted but real story of this family. I am hoping "my girls" will treasure my new purchases as much I have - by memory - for such a long time. I am 67 years old. Thank you Amazon for finding the books for me. Sincerely, Carolyn E Ashbrook

3 out of 5 stars I stand in line with all the others...............2007-03-08

Was this really written by the same authors of Mrs. Mike? I find it poorly put together and very hard to believe. I never "like" the character I am reading about. I don't understand her. I plodded through the book anyway, hoping that somewhere it would turn up good. But, unfortunately, that never happened. I have not read the third book in this saga yet, and am hesitant to do so. I may just stick with reading Mrs. Mike over and over.

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst books I have ever read--VERY DISAPPOINTING.......2007-01-28

If you are expecting a story as good as Mrs. Mike, you won't find it here. You would never know that the same authors penned this book. Mrs. Mike is one of my all-time favorite books and I would never part with my copy. The sequel is terrible--bad story, Mrs. Mike (referred to in this book as "Mama Kathy") has a very minor part in it, and I wondered why the main character was called "Kathy" when in Mrs. Mike, her adoptive parents decided to call her "Kate" because it would be too confusing to have two Kathys in the house. From what I can tell about the sequel to this book, the next one is even worse and I don't plan to waste my money.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2005-05-10

This book is SO MUCH better than that terrible book, Search for Joyful. Granted, there are some unanswered questions in the story, still this is a good book. The writing is much more clear and easy to read, and the main character, Kathy is so much more likeable and not so wishy washy like the Kathy in Search for Joyful.

In this book, Kathy is the daughter of Kathy Forquet and Erich Von Kerll, she has never met her father, and wonders about him constantly during her difficulties with her stepfather. She has a talent for singing, and finds that lots of people like her singing. She eventually marries a con-artist, which is one of the mistakes that she makes.

This book is much easier to read and much more enjoyable. However, there is nothing explained about Mrs. Mike, she is only mentioned in several sentences, not to mention other characters in Search for Joyful. Also, a little unclear is the time between Search for Joyful and Kathy Little Bird. Things which aren't that well explained take place during this story.

Despite the unclear history, this is still a really good story, not like Mrs. Mike, but so much better than Search for Joyful it's almost unbelievable.

From its incorporation in 1886 to the early years of World War II, Georgia's Jekyl Island played host to the Jekyl Island Club, where members controlled an obscene portion of the world's wealth and the fortunes and fates of men and nations were routinely won and lost. Brent Monahan, who is more commonly associated with vampires (1993's The Book of Common Dread and 1995's The Blood of the Covenant) and spirits (1997's The Bell Witch: An American Haunting), uses it as the site of an 1899 crime. Monahan pits Sheriff John Le Brun against none other than J.P. Morgan, as the former attempts to solve the murder of a club member and the latter attempts to dismiss the crime, for personal reasons, as the work of a local poacher. That Morgan is a man of enormous influence is obvious. That Le Brun is a man with powers of his own is demonstrated when a chess match he's playing is interrupted by an errant bustle and a rematch is logically proposed.

"No need," Le Brun said, groaning softly as he bent low from his chair to retrieve fallen pieces. "It was pawn to king four, pawn to king four." He began placing the chessmen on the board. "Knight to king's bishop three, knight to queen's bishop three. Bishop to knight five, pawn to queen's rook three. Bishop to rook four, knight to bishop three. Knight to bishop three, pawn to queen three. Then pawn to queen four and pawn to queen's knight four. Your move."

As it becomes abundantly clear that Le Brun is as far from being a rube in sheriff's clothing as Jay Gould is from standing in a soup line, Morgan parries and Le Brun thrusts amidst a shifting stream of adversaries and allies. These include newspaper tycoon Joseph Pulitzer, Judge Iley Tidewell and his son, Le Brun's chief deputy Warfield Tidewell, assorted robber barons and titans of industry, and any number of duplicitous, nefarious, and dangerously armed factota. In the end, Monahan has crafted in The Jekyl Island Club a well-plotted and richly peopled period whodunit that rises, with an almost imperceptible pitch, to a place where lovers of mystery long to travel but rarely seem to go. --Michael Hudson

              Book Description

Jekyl Island, located on the Georgia coast, was the exclusive playground of the very rich-the club's 100 members controlled one sixth of the nation's wealth-at the turn of the twentieth century. When a member of the Jekyl Island Club is shot to death, his fellow captains of industry anxiously conclude it was a hunting accident. Is the impending visit by President McKinley to the Jekyl Island Club the reason?Could J. P. Morgan himself have been the one who pulled the trigger?Whose side is member and millionaire newspaperman Joseph Pulitzer on?Only the local sheriff, John le Brun-a wily Civil War veteran who has his own agenda-can provide the truth.

I have bought at least a dozen copies of this book as gifts for friends over the last year. Amazon does gift wrap! After visiting Jekyll Island (with two "L"'s now) for 20 years, I finally bought a home there - and love it! This book will pique your interest in this picturesque and unusual island and provide you with a great historical background - and entertain at the same time.

Once you've read the book, book your vacation there. You can stay in J.P. Morgan's apartment and sit on the veranda of the club and enjoy the atmosphere and ambiance that entranced a generation of millionaires a century ago. It's all still there, and this book really brings it all to life.

The book rips right along, but the ending is a bit flat. But given the corner the author has written himself into, it is forgivable. All in all, a good read.

5 out of 5 stars A Terrific KickOff to a Great Series of Mysteries.......2006-06-11

The Jeyll Island Club by Brent Monahan was a geat read. Moody, mysterious, filled with fascinating historical detail, and introducing a new hero in retired sheriff John Le Brun. The book has all everything you need to spend an evening in a comfortable chair with your mind wandering into the strange past of Jekyll Island. Definitely a thinking-man's thriller.

3 out of 5 stars Fascinating history but less than expected.......2005-12-19

When I read about this book, I was fascinated and very intrigued. I just finished the book and I have to say that I just wasn't impressed. The ending is a bit of a surprise, but getting there is much too long and drawn out, almost as if the author needed to add details to try to show you as much of the atmosphere, history, and people as he could. At times this really bogs down the story, too much attention to detail. And at times I didn't always feel I was there. Some parts seemed anachronistic and at one point the author points out when fingerprinting is first introduced, but this is later than the 1899 of the book, too jarring. It is definitely a good read for a trip, which is when I read it, but I was left with a feeling of "the book is OK".

5 out of 5 stars A great book especially for those who know Jekyll.......2004-07-03

I have visited Jekyll all my life and worked there for six summers. Before the clubhouse was renovated, we used to swim in the pool. Even with all this exposure to the historic district, I can't wait to go back and revisit the homes and enjoy the atmosphere, sights and sounds of the historic district - all the imagery found in this novel. The book does indeed make you wonder if in fact the author knows of things kept hidden from the public by the secretive elite members of the Jekyll Island Club.

4 out of 5 stars Really good page turner.......2004-04-17

I am not a Southern native, but I have had the great pleasure of a weekend at the Jekyll Island Club. There, over oysters and champagne you can can easily imagine a long forgotten patrician America, who spent their weekends "roughing it" in unmatched splendor. One can still have brunch there, served by starched, tuxedo-clad waiters, after whcih play croquet on the lawn or golf on a pretty good course once the property of the Goodyears and the Morgans.

This is the wonderful setting for a period mystery by experienced author Brent Moynahan, who deftly crafts a tale of murder, revenge, avarice and envy set in a prestigious capitalist resort. One of the members, limited by invitation only to the 100 richest men in the US, Erastus Springer, has been found dead, apparantly shot during his morning constitutional. John LeBrun, Brunswick sherriff has been called almost as an afterthought to solve the case, presumably with the least fuss possible to the powerful members. LeBrun, who is above corruption, is thwarted by the members, especially J.P. Morgan and Joseph Pulizer, arch captialist and arch populist rivals in everything except their rabid dedication to the Club.

If flawed, this novel is not the nail-biting suspenseful mystery that leads us along with crumbs of evidence to the great "aha" at the end. It does though admirably succeed in its characterization of the people, especially of the very rich and vary poor, who made fin-de-siecle America, and lived bathed in the resntments and ignorance of the War of Northern Agression. It beautifully paints Georgia of the era and tells a story as much tension and grit as charm and wit. By the satisfying end we care less about the plot reaching its logical conclusion as we do seeing a good man prevail. Heartily recommeended, and and admirable Summer read, especially if you are poolside at one of the Barrier Island resorts.

                      Book Description

Marela's travel group has mysteriously vanished in the forest. Alone and afraid, she stumbles upon an isolated cliff top keep, the home of the wizard AErin. Over the snowy, winter months Marela comes to learn that magic makes more sense than she thought, and there's more to AErin than meets the eye.

By the time spring arrives AErin and Marela have wed and she joins him on his yearly jaunt throughout the kingdom, but what happened to her travel group? Even AErin doesn't have the answer. But soon, distractions, like a Roc falling out of the sky, and a dragon that needs slaying, divert them from their search for answers, until Marela is kidnapped.

Who would want to kidnap the wizard's wife? And why does the kidnapping seem to have more to do with Marela herself than with the wizard?

What secret does Marela hold? And what does it have to do with being abandoned in the forest? And why is suddenly everybody involved?

4 out of 5 stars SEXY WIZARD GETS THE GIRL!.......2004-02-24

A damsel in distress is rescued by a wizard. So what, you say?
This wizard (AErin) just happens to be charming and sexy and ends up marrying the damsel (Marela) who shows up on his doorstep. It's a fun twist on an old plot, and the characters are delightful. The author says there is a sequel forthcoming entitled DUCKLING AND THE DRAGONSLAYER involving Duckling (Alianne) and Debuddle. Duckling is AErin's apprentice by the end of TWW, and Debuddle is the gangling youth AErin recruits to help him slay a dragon. Sounds promising.

Attention fantasy and romance fans! This book will keep you
reading. Written without the explicit sex scenes, Becky
Gauger has created some of the best love scenes I've read
in a long time. This tale is well balanced, evenly paced,
                      and very well written.

Marela has lost her family and is forced to leave the village
she called home. When the travelers she has been traveling
with abandon her, she winds up at a wizard's castle. The
old wizard receives her kindly and her life undergoes a
                      rapid change for the better.

In time she realizes she wants to stay at the castle. It
is a safe haven and offers the first comfort she'd known
in years. Her wish is granted but with a great twist in
                      the story.

Marela and AErin also travel together and run into plenty
of danger. Set in a time when dragons and other dangerous
creatures wander the world and when villains prey on the
innocent, this tale will keep you on the edge of your seat,
yet leave you with a rosy glow of happiness as you read.

"The Wizard's Wife" comes highly recommended as a fun read
that will satisfy any fantasy or romance reader seeking
more than just romance or fantasy adventure. The very
talented author has constructed a reality that will pull
you into itself and carry you along to the end. I look
forward to other tales by Ms. Gauger.

                      4 out of 5 stars A lot of fun!.......2003-03-28

"The Wizard's Wife" answers the question "What would happen if the wizard got the girl?" And the answer is a lot of fun. Marela is a very young woman, bereft of everyone she loves, and now apparently abandoned by traveling companions while in the deep woods. Despairing, she wanders the woods until she finds a wizard's keep and AErin, the wizard who lives there. He seems very old but takes good care of her, nursing her back to health both physically and spiritually. But then comes the day when Marela sees the snow-white bearded man climb out of his bath and realizes he isn't nearly as old as she thought he was. One thing leads to another, and Marela becomes the wizard's wife.

AErin is delighted with his new lady and shows her all about his world, meeting other wizards, and the townspeople who depend on him for his "magic". Taking the premise that any science can look like magic, the book proceeds to show us how most of what a wizard does is use his or her knowledge. Since we see the magic from Marela's perspective, it often does seem like AErin was performing a miracle, even if there is more science than magic to it. For example, the wizard "flies" using what is clearly described as a hot-air balloon.

When an evil lord takes sight of the Marela and determines to have her for his own, all of the wizard's skill and those of his friends must come into play to rescue Marela and defeat the villain. In the process, a critical bit of information about Marela's past is revealed and she discovers she isn't as alone in the world as she'd feared.

Told with humor and a lot of skill, this was a book I had trouble putting down for any length of time. The characters were many, well defined, and varied. For example, at one point, the magician must kill a dragon and seeks a dragon slayer from the kitchen, making a hero out of a scullery boy with a good throwing arm and the ability to duck. Oh, and my favorite part was that when Marela is captured, she almost rescues herself rather than waiting for the hero to help her.

This is also a "sweet" romance - sex is implied but not actually on the page. This would make it more readable by younger readers.

4 out of 5 stars endearing fantasy romance.......2003-02-01

The Wasting Disease took away her father so since she alone in he world, Marela is happy to cross the Scar with her adopted uncle Shap and other travelers. However, one morning she awakens to find that she is alone with not one iota of proof that anyone ventured there with her.

Marela feels fortunate to eventually escape the Scar, but exits near Grendelire Keep, where the wizard AErin resides by himself during the cold winter. He takes her in and she feels gratitude towards the elderly wizard. As she begins to fall in love with her kind host, Marela realizes he is more her age. He loves her too so they marry and she accompanies him on his annual pilgrimage to see his friends even while they try to learn the fate of Shap and his party. However, besides other dangers, an evil foe abducts Marela; AErin willingly risks his life to insure she is safe.

THE WIZARD'S WIFE is an endearing fantasy romance in which the reader will want the lead protagonists to fall in love with one another. Marela is a delightful heroine; shy yet talented, until love turns her into a butterfly. AErin may be a wizard but in many ways he acts more like an applied researcher treating wizardry more like a branch of physics. Even with plenty of action and adventure, the key to this warm tale is his euphoria when he performs a magic trick that provides joy to his beloved. Simplistic yet cherished is Becky Gauger's fine tale.

                        Book Description

Population health encompasses traditional public health and preventive medicine but emphasizes the full range of health determinants affecting the entire population rather than only ill or high-risk individuals. The population health approach integrates the social and biological, the quantitative and qualitative, recognizing the importance of social and cultural factors in practice and research. This text is organized around the logical sequence of studying and attempting to improve the health of populations; measuring health status and disease burden, identifying and modeling health determinants, assessing health risks and inferring causation, designing research studies, planning interventions, and evaluating health programs. The second edition incorporates many new topics that reflect changes in contemporary public health concerns and our response to them; as well as shifts in research directions. These include lifecourse approaches to health, gene-environment interactions, emergent infections, and bioterrorism. Among the specific changes are new or expanded discussions of confidence intervals for commonly used rates, the impact of population aging on mortality trends, health survey questionnaires, summary measures of population health, the new International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, migrant studies, race and ethinicity, psychoneuroendocrine pathways, social epidemiology, risk perception, communicating the SARS epidemic, ecologic studies, the odds radio, paticipatory research, suicide, evidence-based community interventions, evaluation methods and health economics, the Cochrane Collaboration, and systemic reviews. The many positive features of the first edition have been retained, such as the extensive use of boxes, case studies, and exercises; the selection of examples representing a variety of health problems, geographic regions, and historical periods; and a multidisciplinary orientation bridging the quantitative and qualitative, the social and biomedical sciences. The book aims to spark a new kind of broad-based training for researchers and practitioners of population health.
