A Refreshing Tale of Life.......2007-08-18
Admit it. You're stuck at a dead end job like the rest of us. Miracle on the 17 Green is about a middle aged guy named Travis who has a hopeless job, a great marriage with three wonderful kids (but doesn't realize it) and some yet to be exposed talent with the golf clubs. Great little tale about all the above and how he goes about learning to appreciate life in general. A wonderful read. Typical Patterson book -- short chapters with easy to follow characters. Highly recommended!!! Give it 4 1/2 stars.
The fun-side of James Patterson.......2007-03-09
I just love the out-of-the ordinary books that he writes! It was fun!
Miracle on the 17th Green.......2005-08-30
Very good book. Just as it says. About life, love and family. If you are a fan of James Patterson add this one to your collection.
Trite, Lame and Predictable .......2005-02-05
Even an avid golfer will find this a tedious read. The plot is contrived and predictable. The humor is sophomoric at best. It is blessedly short but I'd rather play the worst muni in the world than re-read this book. The only reason I finished it the first time was because I couldn't believe it could grow steadily worse from page to page. If your golfer has any education at all, buy him or her a P.G. Wodehouse book instead: The Heart of a Goof or The Clicking of Cuthbert.
HEARTWARMING STORY OF ALL KINDS OF MIRACLES...............2004-12-12
Travis Mckinley is just your average guy...; he hates his job in advertising, his marriage is on the rocks, and he loves golf. When he is unceremoniously fired from his job, a fabulous round of golf played at his local course is the catalyst that drives him to living his dream of playing in the Senior P.G.A. tour. So he flys off to Q school to begin living his dream, leaving behind unemployment and a disintegrating relationship with his physician wife Sarah.
Travis arrives--but so do many other avid golfers who aspire to be the next Jack Nicholas and have the $3,000 enrollment fee. But the gods are smiling on the Mckinelys; could it be that Travis could actually out-stroke some of the greatest golfers ever to play the game? Could he win the tour, all that money, and perhaps receive the greatest gift of all--the restoration of his family??
Read the book to find out, although it doesn't take an Einstein to conclude the obvious based upon the title of the book. Although I found this a somewhat interesting tale, I believe that to truly appreciate the story one must truly appreciate the game of golf--as do obviously the authors, although unfortunately I do not. Many readers may find themselves struggling with the terminology used within the game. All in all, a serviceable story with an even better lesson. Don't be afraid to take chances, in this one life that we all have to live. Take a gamble on life, and on love.

Book Description
"Delectably funny...A novel that gives new meaning to the term 'classic detective fiction.'"
THE WASHINGTON POST BOOK WORLD
In 70 A.D. in ancient Rome, no one is a saint. Or so thinks Marcus Didius Falco, a private investigator first introduced in the award-winning SILVER PIGS, who's trying to prevent a murder before it happens. When every man a woman marries dies, Falco knows there's smoke and fire--and he'll stop at nothing to untangle the Gordion knot that proves it.
Customer Reviews:
Venus in Copper.......2006-11-10
This is my favorite of all the Falco books. I love the plot, especially the MO of the murderer, I love plebian Marcus' ongoing relationship with patrician Helena Justina, but most especially I love the storyline involving Titus, the turbot, Marcus' brother's shield, and the Praetorian Guard. Read it and weep, because you'll be laughing hard enough to.
Snakes Alive.......2006-09-25
This is the third novel in the mystery series featuring Marcus Didius Falco, an informer and sleuth. A series of books that have become hugely popular, so much so that the author is now at the forefront of historical mystery writers. It was probably a stroke of genius on her part to have novels that are extremely well researched and contain all the elements that would be and should be found in Rome in AD70, but to have a lead character who has the vocabulary of a present day New York cop. In this the third novel Falco is starting to feel like an old friend.
Falco is trying to live down the indignity of being released from jail with the help of his mother of all people and he has accepted a case from some rich private clients. He is also in the middle of trying to entice his girlfriend Helena Justina to come and live with him, though why a senator's daughter, especially one who has just lost their baby, would wish to live in the hovel he calls home is anybody's guess.
When the client Falco is supposedly protecting dies, he is immediately re-hired by none other than the chief suspect. The crux of the matter is that Falco must find and expose a woman, a fortune hunter, who has lost more husbands to accidents than it can be believed possible.
Falco has more than a little excitement during the investigation, including a brush with a female contortionist who has a very interesting snake act. He also has the tremendous honour, or otherwise of a "friendly" visit from Titus Caesar himself, right in the middle of Falco attempting to cook a huge turbot without the aid of every chef's must have, a fish kettle.
A decent new case, but still witty character interaction.......2003-07-31
"Venus in Copper," the third Falco novel, marks his first new 'case,' as the previous two novels covered facets of the same extended plot. However, the social scheming of the freed slaves the Hortensii, the reputedly deadly widow Severina Zotica, Falco's clashes with the Emperor's agents, and poisonings at banquets don't provide as exciting a plot as the political conspiracy of the first two novels. In addition, the action never moves outside of Rome, and therefore lacks the charm of the additional rural settings of Britannia and Pompeii featured in the previous novels.
Falco still spars with his patrician girlfriend Helena Justina, often in the best of Davis's subtle and evocative prose, and Falco's morose attitude about the future of the relationship is skillfully fueled by the entrance of true historical personality Titus Caesar as a suitor. The Falco-Helena character relationship is the real core of these novels, not the actual plots, so the slightly lesser mystery in "Venus" does not detract from the continuing development of these rich characters.
High on Mystery, Low on History.......2003-04-21
Lindsey Davis is no Steven Saylor - which is both good and bad. On the one hand, Davis crafts a better mystery, with excellent attention paid to dropping just the right amount of clues at just the right time, keeping us guessing til the very end as to who is to blame for what. On the other hand, Saylor is far, far more effective in evoking ancient Rome. Davis' Falco, to quote a previous reviewer, is "a modern mystery in togas." Ancient Rome is the backdrop, but it could just as easily be ancient Greece, or medieval France, or Victorian England. So, which is better: Saylor or Davis? That depends on your tastes, obviously. For the mystery, go to Davis. For the history, go to Saylor. Or, better still, read both!
This was my first foray into the Falco series, and I did not feel any loss from missing the first two volumes. Almost the opposite, in fact. These books are very difficult to find nowadays, so do not wait until you find book one to get started.
Great Wit--Great History!.......2002-08-25
I'd give this novel a 4.5 if I could. It isn't the top of the line as Falco stories go, but it's so far superior to most other historical mysteries that I hated to rate it less than 5. This is the novel that contains Davis's most waggish bit of BRITISH fun, on page 135 (paperback version):
"It was a hundred years since Rome decided to civilize the Gauls;. . . I am prepared to concede that one day the three cold Gallic provinces will come up with a contribution to the civilised arts--but nobody is going to convince me that it will be mastery of cuisine."
My best friend, married to a Frenchman who is an excellent home-kitchen chef, fell off her chair at that one, as I had done when I read it a few years earlier! And that's just one sample of Davis's mordant sense of "tweak."
I demand to know why this book is out of print!

Book Description
Had journalists plied their trade in the days of King Arthur, how would they have reported breaking stories like the Quest for the Holy Grail? Or the love affair between Lancelot and Guinevere? Or the fall of the Round Table? In answering these intriguing questions, Naomi Mitchison offers keen and humorous insights into not only how the news is reported, but also how conflicting accounts of the Arthurian story may have grown. The resulting novel, To the Chapel Perilous, is a remarkable work of wit and style.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent satire.......2002-01-26
Green Knight Press produces (and reprints) some of the best Arthuriana available today, and this 1955 book by Naomi Mitchison is a very rare treat.
"Chapel Perilous" follows a pair of Arthurian journalists, Lienors and Dalyn (of the "Camelot Chronicle" and the "Northern Pict") who are scooping the big story: The Grail. But other developments crop up as well -- interviews with famous personages, the affair of Lancelot with Queen Guinevere, and more.
We follow Lienors, Dalyn, and other characters such as Ygraine la Grande (whose hair is "revolting" due to hair dye from Nimue) and Lord Horny (don't ask). We also have old favorites like Queen Guinevere, Morgan-Morgause (one person in this book), Sir Lancelot, the somewhat chattery Sir Galahad, the somewhat angry Elayne (you can tell that in this one, Galahad got his personality from his dad), and Merlin of course. (Addressed occasionally as "Mr. Merlin" -- this particularly interpretation of the old wizard is delightful)
Mitchison's writing is very clear and evocative; dialogue is very enjoyable, often lapsing into a "veddy veddy English" manner of speaking (Galahad is the most prominent of these). The usage of such terms as "O.K." never detracts from the dialogue, which is less pompous and self-conscious than many Arthurian books. These characters are willing to lampoon bishops, talk about hair dye, and discuss teen girl crushes on Lancelot.
Like all the GKP books I've read, this book has a lovely cover, and a very good binding and fine quality paper. It's shorter than most of the books by this publisher (219 pages) though significantly longer than many successful spoofs that I've read. And perhaps "spoof" is the wrong word for it — satire is infinitely better. There's a wry, sideways feel to this story, with some serious scenes and some that are outright hilarious. (It's not really suitable for kids, due to some mild subject matter connected with the original stories -- as well as one mildly dirty scene in Spiral Castle -- but is fine for teens)
This is a must-read for any Arthuriana fan, especially those who enjoy seeing sacred cows barbecued. And it will insure that you will never again read the stories about King Arthur and his knights without imagining Lienors and her dwarf in the background.
Ingenious twist on Arthurian legend.......2000-04-05
This is one of the more inventive Arthurian novels I have read. It is set in an Arthurian world with certain anachronistic qualities, specifically the presence of journalists and newspapers, and everything that goes along with them, such as cameras. It is centered around the quest for the Holy Grail and raises some intriguing questions. Worth reading if you can find it.

Book Description
Grounded in ancient hands-on methods of diagnosis and treatment while encompassing the innovations of the early experimental osteopaths, craniosacrally-based treatment is now one of the most successful and fastest-growing approaches to mind-body healing. Providing access to the unity of structure and function in the organism, such therapy offers a simple, direct, and non-dogmatic means for tapping the body’s inherent intelligence in a fluid and spontaneous way. We should not presume that the techniques in this book deal solely with the bones of the cranium, the spine, and the lower back. The craniosacral system is no less than the structural aspect of the central nervous system. Its methods originate in neural behavior and emotional energy and include their manifestations throughout the tissues and organs of the body. Both a medical system with precise anatomical criteria and a therapeutic art requiring a practitioner to feel, interpret, and move energy, modern craniosacral therapy offers a unique way to perceive and influence the structural configuration of the brain itself in its relationship to the body’s architecture.
Customer Reviews:
Great help.......2006-02-20
I'm in a class for Cranial/Sacral with a teacher who isn't very good at teaching. Frustrated with the lack of materials, a general disorderly method of giving what he does know, and his very slim instruction in palpation, I began a search for a book to help me get what I wanted. This book is fantastic! It clearly lays out the 10 step protocol and gives great tips for discovering the rhythm through palpation. The illustrations are helpful as well. I was quickly loosing any interest in a subject (CST) that I have been wanting to learn for years but this book saved the day! I showed it to my teacher and he said that it would be a good text book to use for his classes in the future. I hope, for their sake, he does.
A short course manual.......2004-12-08
Originally a manual for a relicensure seminar for chiropractic doctors, it was published at the request of John Upleger, D.O. Not intended as a full textbook, it was meant to be a brief workshop introduction to clinical practice for doctors and worked quite well in that context. The book does offer some insights that weren't presented anywhere else, such as the "lymphatic" function of CSF circulation through the brain, which might be the most compelling reason to seek craniosacral work. There is also an interesting discussion of the neurology of palpation. People who criticize one book over another are missing the point. The various craniosacral books aren't competing with each other; it's best to get as many as you can and cull what you can from each of them. Sometimes a short course is easier to digest. The Heart of Listening, which is a phenomenal and vastly more comprehensive work, can also be overwhelming and confusing for the beginner. If you actually do the exercises in this book, you will have a good start on what should prove to be a long journey of developing skills.
pedantic (look it up youll have to look up everything else).......2003-12-09
though this book is supposed to have been revised for the general public im sure even professionals will find the overuse of medical terminology tedious.
Clear anatomy.......2001-12-02
I found this book to be very helpful when doing my certification exam. It clearly explains the anatomy of the system and broadens one's understanding of what this therapy is about. I don't believe that this therapy is something that can be learned from a book, so I didn't have that expectation from it. The techniques that he does share are simple, basic techniques that one can begin to play with. If it stirs your curiousity for more, get yourself to a class. I've also found it helpful for clients of mine that want to know more about the nuts and bolts of the technique in a readable and clear form, without the length of a textbook.
Don't buy this book.......2000-06-12
Get the "Heart of Listening" instead. Pictures are poor and the text is very hard to read. There is no logical order to this book. The author should have worried more about the content of the book instead of using words like "Serendipitous". Gee, when is the last time you've seen that..High School!
