The national bestselling author of Texas Cooking serves up another treat
Customer Reviews:
Great book-Wingate is a wonderful "down-home" author!.......2007-01-26
Laura Draper, the main character in this story is having an awful day, and bad time in her life period. Her job as editor for Texcetera is in question, her boyfriend Dale is giving her nothing but a bad time on the verge of a break-up, and then to top it all off her mother passed away recently, and it has really been tough for her, and her ailing father. Her father is a burden, as all he wants to do is sit in the corner of the house, and is into a bad depression all the time.
Not knowing where else to turn, she is driving along in the hailstorm to get to her job, when she reaches a crossroads in Nowhere Texas. She parks by the Lone Star Cafe, and falls sound asleep in her car and brings to attention two ladies who are twin sisters-Mernalene and Hasselene. They have owned this little restaurant for years, and they approach Laura, inviting her in for refreshment. This is the turning point for Laura, as there she meets the man she saw in the truck driving ahead of her along the way, Graham Keeton.
She and Graham have an immediate connection it seems, and begin getting to know each other. Graham has issues of his own grief though and has only begun to recover from it. He can't tell Laura what it is that ails his heart, and Laura feels bad that she feels he can't trust her enough to tell him. Later in the book, she finds out what it is that happened-and it makes Graham very angry for some time.
The next important event in the book that happens is that Laura gets a job offer to California to become the publisher of a big magazine. But with everything else going on in her life, and having had many other events transpire in Nowhere Texas, along with her ailing father, she does not feel she can leave her current position and home. Not only that, but she truly has fallen for Graham and wants to make up to him. But since the job in California offers so much-it will be hard to turn it down.
This book also brings in characters from the previous book in this trilogy, Texas Cooking, where Colleen Collins marries True, and now has a baby girl.
Excellent book!.......2005-06-09
This was the first book i read from lisa wingate. it was excellent! it was one of those kinds of books that hits the spot and just makes you feel good. its really sweet and i felt like i could connect with the characters. i was really sad when it was over.
A simple tale to warm your heartstrings!.......2005-03-08
I will admit unabashedly that I am a Lisa Wingate Fan. When I looked for this book at my local library ~~ I had hoped to have it before my surgery so I could enjoy my recovery period reading this book. Even after it arrived three days later ~~ it still helped me pass away recovery time reading this sweet little book! (I did read Texas Cooking first!)
This book is the second in the trilogy of Wingate's contemporary romance novels. This one focuses on Laura Draper, a young successful woman high up on the publishing world ~~ sent to Texas for a month to revive a magazine there and get it sent off to the publishers on time. During a horrid day ~~ tornadoes landing in other parts of Texas, a freeway found to be unfit for travel ~~ Laura was stuck in backcountry Texas trying to find her way to the office when a hail storm hit. While sitting in the storm ~~ Laura receives some bad news ~~ the second in several months. So instead of escaping the car for shelter, Laura just simply collapses in her car and wait out the storm. After the storm passes, she notices that she is near an old Cafe ~~ where they serve up buttermilk pies and the most wonderful cup of coffee. Turns out the two women who own the cafe have a nephew that is just a good-looking cowboy with secrets of his own.
And that is just the beginning of a fun and wonderful romance that is set among barbecues and country singing, cranky fathers who forget to take their medicines and all that fun stuff. It does tug at your heartstrings and make you believe in the magic of love!
If you're looking for a quick and wonderful read ~~ don't hesitate to pick this one and Texas Cooking up! It's perfect for those summery days as well as those wintery days when the weather can't make up its mind!

Life at the Crossroads.......2004-11-24
After the death of her mother, high powered magazine executive Laura Draper finds herself working in Austin on a start up/revamp of a Texas publication as well as dealing with a grief impaired father. When a freeway is closed and a detour is mandated, Laura literally falls through a rabbit hole and into the world of the Lone Star Cafe. The author gives us wonderfully sketched characters, with a lovely sense of place, and some thought provoking peeks into the inner values of her characters. It's a nice little romance, one you could share with your mother or your daughter.
intriguing look at the rat race meets small town Texas.......2004-09-08
A fifteen year career in editing magazines may be in the balance for Laura Draper sent by her bosses from Richmond, Virginia to Austin, Texas to insure that the launch of Texcetera occurs on schedule. Murphy seems optimistic to Laura as even nature and the interstate has played havoc with her timeline and her significant other and her father have nuked her personal life in her absence. With a key bridge down and a hail storm terrorizing her, Laura sits in Crossroads, Texas thinking her former lover Dale is on to Rio for his next assignment and her father is missing without picking up his life saving blood thinner at the pharmacy.
Senior welcoming duo Hasselene and Mernelene observe Laura sitting in her car until they decide to meet her and persuade her to relax at the LONE STAR CAFÉ. There she finds an incredible old fashioned home style TEXAS COOKING and a hunk of a cowboy Graham making her reconsider her lifestyle. She realizes she is at the crossroads of glamorous publishing success, but at the cost of her personal needs or if she stops to help her dad, really make Texcetera work, drink the coffee and kiss the stud perhaps have it all.
This is an intriguing look at the rat race meets small town Texas with the winner being readers. The story line is amusing and warm, but contains a serious undertone involving relationships and success. Laura is a terrific star of the tale surrounded by a solid somewhat eccentric cast not just in Crossroads. Fans of contemporary tales will enjoy feast on Lisa Wingate's delicious repast.

What a guise!.......2007-04-01
I bought this book because I wanted to break into the fantasy novel genre with something that wasn't ultra famous. In all reality, it is a fantasy novel for the Christian book genre readers, but it was disguised as a regular fantasy book novel. I didn't appreciate that very much. The strong religious undertones took away from the novel (I actually completed it) but the discriptions and the writing were terrible. Perry is too wordy with the language and almost nothing had a physical discription beyond the clothes one wore or the kind of stone at the locale.
It is a good book for youths or people looking to buy different kinds of Christian novels, but it is not a fantasy book for fans of that genre.
Incredible.......2006-10-28
I am not completely done with it, work in progress, but so far Anne Perry has done a great job with her visualizations and connecting me emotionally to the characters and their qwests. If you have read part of it before and quit, I really suggest giving it another try. If you can brave through her wordiness and legnth of the book I think it is a very smooth escape into Tathea's world. Imagen a world finally brought the faith and explanation for life that they didn't even know they needed, and falling in love with their new way of life.
I do wish that she had been more descriptive of the characters, I found myself wondering what they would look like many times.
I am concerned about the "morman" comment in one of the reviews. I have not seen that in the book yet and would most definetly not reccomend it with those undertones. I will amend my comments if I find that so, but not seeing it yet.
Dive in the water's deep.......2006-08-04
I really liked this book. It was philosophical, religious and adventurous. If you are not into deep reflections don't bother, you won't last. It is true that it is an allegory of Christianity, but so was C.S. Lewis' Narnia series, although I wouldn't put them in the same league.
The beginning dashes out of the gate with excitement, but then somewhere in the middle slows to a snail's pace, and does become repetitive at times, but on a whole it is an imaginative piece. I think it could have been cut down a bit to give a better pace throughout the book, and then I would have given it one more star.
This book was meant for deep reflection, conversational debate and more importantly discussion. I liked the character of Tathea. She found strength and courage, love and purpose, loss and life, wisdom and hope. It is a journey unto her own self, and when you look into your own soul, you may find that it is a journey that we all must face in our lifetime.
Very thoughtful book........2006-07-06
While most people thought of this book as a sci fi bomb, I found it very insightful and a book that actually makes you think about what you read, instead of spelling it out for the reader. Although not your typical fantasy/scifi book, I would recommend this book to all fantasy readers who would like to think while reading.
I Gave Up - Jacket Description Misleading.......2005-12-23
It is very rare that I don't finish a book, but this is one of them. The book jacket made this novel sound so interesting and it had a great initial start. The first few pages were riveting and fast-paced and described the coup and Tathea's escape. There were so many episodes in the book where you had to suspend belief and forget any thoughts of realistic plot. Her escape from the "assasins" was one of thos e scenes.
I read about 325 pages of this book before I realized it was not going to get better. If the book had kept on the path of a fantasy adventure (which was what the jacket alluded to), I would have kept reading. This book is only a small part fantasy, which by the way was often interesting. This book is basically a religious allegory/parable/novel.
The jacket description is very misleading and must have been written by someone who wanted to sell a lot of books to people who enjoy fantasy. I do enjoy religion-based novels, but only when I WANT to read them, not when I have been tricked into reading them. Even so, I still don't think this book worked on a religious novel level. It was VERY repetitive and very boring.

Customer Reviews:
Awesome book.......2002-09-04
Poppy reaches out to everyone and anyone. Regardless of whether you are religious or not, this book will connect with some part of you like nothing else. It is an inspirational story of a former movie actress who loses faith after a life full of heartache and loss, only to gradually find it again in an unexpected and quite mysterious vistor in her darkest days late in life. It took me by surprise how much I enjoyed this book, and I'm sure it will surprise and touch you, too.
Purely Spiritual And Uplifting!.......2001-02-12
Such a powerful story for such a small book. I was truly impressed with the messege this story had to give. I can only hope that when I am old I have a little angel to help me along the way. This story will touch your heart and uplift your very soul.
Touching and inspirational.......2001-01-09
Poppy, Angel of Love is a well crafted and inspiring story of love. I do believe that people come into our lives for a reason and I believe there are angels out there watching over us. This story shows that miracles do happen and that we are not alone. A must read for inspiration and hope.

The Small Book with a Big Heart........2000-12-17
When is the movie coming out? This is a touching story of multi generational proportions, and the little child shall lead her. A great book to take on a flight, or snuggle up on the couch with a hot cup of tea. Where positive triumphs over negative, where smiles will heal tears. Get it, enjoy it and tell others.
Book Description
"An important contribution to the on-going national dialogue concerning the need for planning for an increasingly aged population and its impact on our social, political, medical, economic institutions."
--Wisconsin Bookwatch
"Based on their assessments of the levels of need for the long-term care among African-American, Latino, and non-Latino white older persons, the authors offer viable and attractive possible alternatives to institutionalization in the long-term care of the elderly."
--Nurse Practitioner
"A major contribution. Should be a part of every course on social gerontology, long-term care, the demography of aging, or formal/informal support networks of the elderly."
--Robert Joseph Taylor,Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan
America is getting older. By the year 2010, almost one in five Americans will be 65 years of age or older.
The combined forces of low fertility and longer life spans among all racial and ethnic groups have resulted in a disproportionate increase in the number of individuals over 65 and an even faster increase in the proportion of those individuals over eighty-five. As a result, the nation faces an unprecedented challenge in addressing the economic, medical, and long-term care needs of this older population at the same time that it assures the welfare of the young. The growth of the cost of the long-term care of the elderly is one of the major forces behind recent increases in Medicaid expenditures, and any reformed health care financing system will have to find ways of providing high quality long-term care to older Americans at a reasonable cost.
In a racially and culturally diverse nation like the United States, official policy regarding the care of the elderly simply cannot be based on the assumption that the elderly are a culturally and socially monolithic population. The cultural, social, and economic situations of the elderly simply differ too greatly and the family's role in their care is affected by important cultural and social factors.
In
Who Will Care for Us? Ronald J. and Jacqueline L. Angel argue that policies based on the assumption of a homogenous population will fail to take advantage of the opportunities that ethnic and cultural diversity offer for the long-term care of the elderly. The authors examine the great racial and ethnic diversity among the elderly in the contemporary U.S. in terms of living arrangements, economic well-being, and reliance on formal and family-based sources of support. Based on their assessments of the levels of need for long-term care among black, Hispanic, and non-Hispanic white older persons, they offer viable and attractive possible alternatives to institutionalization in the long-term care of the elderly.

A Must-Read Even for Non-Vegetarians.......2005-02-04
You don't have to be a vegetarian to take advantage of this book. I am a non-vegetarian with a 1 1/2-year-old daughter who does not like meat. I was very worried that she would not get enough protein and iron so I purchased this book to educate myself more about non-animal sources of the nutrients. What an eye-opener! Even the nutrition courses I took in college did not provide me with such wealth of information. This book will tell you all you need to know to feed yourself and your family healthily and nutritiously. Interestingly, it will also change the way you look at the food on your plate. I'll be delighted if my daughter will one day happily eat red meat (organic of course). But I no longer worry that she doesn't.
Great hardcore book.......2003-04-02
This is a book for those who want to know more about the nutrition of being a vegetarian or those who need some reinforcement. I have not read such a well written book on this topic. I think that everyone whether vegan, vegetarian or omnivore should read this book.
Ditto!.......2002-08-20
I would like to echo the positive remarks that other readers have made. The nutrition information alone is a must-read for anyone considering becoming vegetarian or anyone who is concerned about the diets of their loved ones.
I was very pleased by the overall honest tone of the book. The authors were never "preachy" and were willing to admit that some claims in the book were not yet fully substantiated. The result is a book that is very balanced and convincing. Bravo!
If you're planning on going vegetarian or vegan, get this!.......2002-08-14
I had a hard time finding a book for diabetics going vegetarian or vegan. I found this one, thinking it was going to be mostly recipes and all, and was happy to see it covers a very wide range of topics. Three chapters convinced me this was the book to get: the diabetic vegetarian, losing weight the vegetarian way, and the vegetarian athlete, all applicable to my new lifestyle change. It also convinced me that I want to go vegan, which I never thought would happen. Milk is baby food after all for us mammal types! So give this book a try, has delicious recipes included, and vegan alternatives on menu plans for diabetics.
Nutrition information and more.......2001-07-16
This was one of the first books I read when I decided to follow a vegan diet, and a year and a half later, I am glad that I found it so soon. Though it also contains stuff about other issues and problems that many vegetarians encounter, the main value of this book lies in the nutritional information it contains. The book goes through what vitamins and minerals are needed, why they are needed, where to find them in vegetarian foods, and what studies have shown about vegetarians and their relations to these nutrients. There are larger chapters discussing protein and calcium, which are the primary concerns that people who don't know much about vegetarianism seem to have. Messina is a registered dietician and cites her references carefully. She tries not to make any unfounded claims, though she cites correlational studies whose conclusions are more unclear than she makes them seem. For the most part, the information is very much consistent with current knowledge of nutritional science, and if you are a new vegetarian who is unsure of where to start, this book will prove to be extremely useful in understanding why other people become vegetarians, how such a diet affects certain illnesses, how to address the special needs of infants, children, teenagers, pregnant women, athletes, and how to start planning and preparing vegetarian meals. Of course, it's a big change to alter your dietary habits, so you want to read many other books as well. And cookbooks will no doubt be helpful. But you can't go wrong starting with The Vegetarian Way.
