Book Description
LEADING FROM THE SECOND CHAIR will raise awareness of the need for strong leaders in secondary positions. It will describe the value they can bring to their organization and to primary leaders when they are serving at their full potential. It will reshape the way they view their role, with an emphasis on their own responsibility as leaders. It recognizes the unique challenges and frustrations of serving in a subordinate position and equips these leaders with the attitudes and skills that they will need to survive and thrive in this new paradigm.
Because of the scarcity of resources for second chair leaders, particularly those in the church, this book will offer a practical way to improve the performance of any organization.
Leading Congregational Change discussed the importance of a "vision community"--a diverse group of key members who discern and implement the vision for a congregation--to guide the transformation of a church. This work will extend the theme of an empowered leadership team as we explore how individual clergy and laity can lead effectively.

For Second and First Chair Leaders.......2007-03-09
This book gave me a fresh perspective on a difficult situation. I can get away with calling myself a good leader. I am a graduate of the nation's oldest military college and a former naval officer. And I know that all leadership is challenging. But I was not ready for the difficult dance that a second chair has to manage. No one person - even a senior pastor - can be the expert on everything. And if you are a strong leader, with proven and developed expertise in your profession it can be difficult when you report to someone without the same insight. I am an associate pastor in a growing church and also the principal of the church's school. My senior pastor is a great guy, an amazing preacher, and a solid church leader who has little experience in education and management of multiple employees. It can be tough trying to support someone who doesn't get you and does not have the time to absorb all that you have learned in two decades of working. But that is my job and it is also my job to be the servant and make things work in this relationship. This book gave me a lot of what I needed to get there mentally. On another note, if you are the top person in any ministry involving multiple staff you may need to read this book as much as your subordinates do - especially if you have less than five years in a senior subordinate role. But don't trust me - the people who wrote and contributed to this book are the experts - and it shows.
Resource For the Entire Pastoral Staff to Read Together.......2006-08-31
IF . . .
Staff communication and Egos are healthy enough to take it.
This book elevates the role of second chair pastoral staff. As the lead pastor of a church I appreciate the public acknowledgment of the immense value of second chair leadership. Any senior pastor who feels a need to micromanage or minimize the role of others is guilty of leading the church to mediocrity, sort of like an engine only running on one cylinder. I always want my second chair leaders to be LEADERS in every sense of the word.
This book also cautions second chair leaders to check their personal egos at the door when they enter. Subordination is a great American weakness that does great damage to the church. Often second chair leaders excell in vision, energy, and drive, but too often are weak in areas of savy and experience. If the first chair leader feels threatened, things quickly go from bad to worse. This book builds savy.
This book is timely, important, and could potentially prevent many ministry wrecks. I suggest that every multiple staff church use it as a study guide for a series of staff meetings. I wish it had come along earlier in my ministry.
Excellent Book For All Leaders.......2006-07-18
"Leading From The Second Chair" is a book that generates healthy discussions and allows anyone in a leadership role in a church to gain a better perspective on what they do and what the First Chair Leader goes through.
I have led our pastoral staff through a discussion of the principles in this book, allowing time for feedback, comments, interaction and questions. It has been a healthy time of understanding how God has wired each of us and how we can better serve our leader, build God's church and stay healthy.
executive pastors take note.......2006-04-20
I'm someone who recently transitioned from first chair to second chair by choice due to a recognition of my strenghths and weaknesses. This book helped in that transition as I felt my way around this new role. It also helped confirm for me that I had made the right choice. I found especially helpful the section on the "deep/wide paradox" in seeing the need for balance between minutia and grand vision. Also helpful (and humbling for a former first chair) was the section on the "subordinate leader paradox". This book will be extremely helpful to the second chair leader who feels trapped in a bad situation with a bad first chair (not me) but is still full of great wisdom for the person in a great situation with a great first chair leader(like my church). I recomended this book to a church planter in Hawaii and he read it along with his potential second chair guy, which I thought was a great use of this book. Every second chair leader should read this, especially young guys like myself.
Needed this 20 years ago.......2006-03-24
After 37+ years as a second-chair leader, finally there is a book with practical information that fits the position. I've always felt called to the second chair, but have also chafed at not being able to exert greater leadership for my church. The authors have done a masterful job of providing principles along with real-life examples. I recommend this to any second-chair leader.

A minor observation.......2006-10-31
This book begins and ends as a perfectly competent, trial-centered mystery thriller. The plot is like a finely made cuckoo clock. Once wound up, it clanks and whirrs, doors open up at just the right time and things pop into sight exactly when they should. In a book that is a part of a better than average series, it is well and good that they should do so.
However, the heart of the book is not given to the series protagonists, Dismas (named after the "good thief" on the cross beside Jesus) Hardy and Abe Glitsky, but to a young lawyer named Amy Wu. Ms. Wu is very bright and very competent, so bright and so competent that she makes thoroughly boneheaded errors, one after another, in entirely convincing ways. The middle of the book is given to Ms. Wu's slow realization that she has made a mess of things and her attempts to crawl out of the pit she has dug for herself. This is not the stuff of a well-constructed mystery. This is, rather, something that looks very like--dare I say it?--literature.
A couple of hundred pages of this 454 page book are more like a novel than a mystery story. Overall, this has a slightly negative effect on the mystery story, hence the four stars. But it also gives me hope that Lescroart has something good, something really good in him that someday he might put down on paper.
Deal Breaker.......2006-10-23
This books starts with a murder. The suspect: a teenage boy who does his best too look and act guilty. Because he's a juvenile, he can be saved from LWOP (Life without Parole), if he pleads guilty to a double murder.
Everyone thinks this is a great idea. The perp will be out at the age of 25. There is no long trial and the DA gets convictions on two murders. Everyone except the suspect who at the last minute refuses the deal, because he insists that while he might be a creepy kid, he didn't kill two people.
Now, things get going! That's the beauty of this book. You never quite know what's coming next.
Terrific Book.......2006-02-25
I thought this book would be a very long legal trial, but it wasn't, and I enjoyed it very, very much. It had me turning the pages as fast as I could, and was very difficult to put down.
My first Lescroart.......2005-08-05
Fairly good. Suspense is maintained, though perhaps drawn out too long. And the characterizations of the main players are well done, plus there's some sharp, witty dialogue.
But the ending seems to be written for Hollywood, garishly melodramatic. And I'm not one who usually can predict endings (my wife can), but in this one I could see where the plot (the pattern and motives for the killings) was heading from about the midpoint of the novel--tho I didn't know the identity of the killer, which seemed to come out of the blue.
I'll probably try another Lescroart.
Excellent except for..........2005-06-18
I have enjoyed all the series, and thought this one was one of the best. The story is well developed, and the courtroom scenes very readable. However...
1) Most any reader figures out the connection between the murders long before the experts do. They weren't as smart as we are, right?
2) The coincidence of who the shooter turns out to be is a little much, don't you think?
3) And a minor note. Mr. Lescroart must not know Southern Baptists. He has the aged, very conservative Southern Baptist minister wearing A COLLAR (!!!), and living in a rectory! An editor should have caught that gaffe very quickly.
All in all, a good read.
Book Description
Like the second-chair position in an orchestra, a well-prepared associate pastor complements and harmonizes with the senior pastor's ministry to create an exquisite symphony. Yet more often than not, we consider the position of "second fiddle" second rate. How long will we let the growing number of assistant and associate pastors struggle to recognize their significance within the church?
Martin Hawkins feels he is fulfilling his calling by faithfully serving in the role of associate pastor, and this book affirms the role of the assistant pastor as a God-honoring ministry worthy of a calling and lifetime of service.

Learning The Ropes.......2006-09-22
For those who are entering into this level of ministry, this book is a MUST. I'm not even finished reading but I've been truly enlighted. It's hard figuring out what your role in ministry may be while others who may not even be on the search for direction from God scrutinize and say who and what an associate Pastor is supposed to do and be. This book is helping the scales be removed from my eyes and also allowing me to realize what it is that I was "designed by God" to do! Not necessarily what people expect but what God Himself expects and accepts.

Book Description
This book puts psychotherapists In The Other Chair. Ten psychotherapists, survivors and children of survivors of the Holocaust, explore their own biographies and professional choices and responses.
The uncovering of what the author has called "a priori countertransference" is a model for training for therapeutic work with Holocaust survivors and their children, and victims of other severe traumatization.
This beautifully written book invites the reader - professional and lay person alike - to personally engage in an emotional and intellectual confrontation with troubling questions with regard to human nature and social organization, that are brought up by extreme violence.

Moving, candid exploration of difficult issues........1999-08-25
I enjoyed this book immensely and found it very moving. Personally, the look into the difficulties and triumphs of the Second Generation was intriguing, warming and touching. As a professional, I was most interested in and inspired by the candid discussion of countertransference issues. A must for the professional who wants to make sure to remain human. Useful for the client who wants a more personal view of the psychotherapist.

Book Description
The First Law: They date back to the wilder days of San Francisco's vigilante past, a private police force that keeps watch for paying clients. Unfortunately, Sam Silverman - an elderly pawnshop owner and a friend of Lt. Abe Glitsky's father - could no longer afford Patrol Special protection, and he may have paid with his life. Dismas Hardy, putting together a high-stakes lawsuit against the security firm, steps cautiously into a world where the only law is survival...
The Second Chair: Dismas Hardy's up-and-coming associate, Amy Wu, brings him a high-profile case: Andrew Bartlett, the seventeen-year-old son of a prominent San Francisco family, has been arrested for the double slaying of his girlfriend and his English teacher. Determined to get the case into juvenile court, and overwhelmed by the mounting evidence against her client, Wu asks Hardy to sit second chair for her in Bartlett's defense.
The Motive: It starts with a double homicide. Because of the high profiles of the victims, the mayor of San Francisco herself demands that a high-ranking detective be put on the case. And so Abe Glitsky is thrust into the controversial investigation. Dan Cuneo, the officer already working the case, is immediately wary of Glitsky. Matters are made worse when Cuneo starts to focus on his primary suspect - who also happens to be an old girlfriend of Dismas Hardy.
Book Description
Donald Strachey is asked to investigate the suspicious death of Paul Haig by three different people-Haig's homophobic mother, his ex-lover, and the psychiatrist hired to "cure" him of his homosexuality. Just as he gets started, however, all three remove him from the case, leaving Strachey with a brutal murderer that now everyone wants left alone.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting, Complex Characters.......2007-07-03
Everybody seems to want to hire Don to investigate the death of Paul Haig, including his boozy mother, Phyllis, his lover, Larry Bierly, and Dr. Vernon Crockwell, who tried to "cure" both Paul and Larry of their homosexuality.
This one, too, kept me in the dark until the final resolution. My favorite quote, Don speaking of Timmy: "It was hell loving a man who got all his values from dead white European males, but to have done such was my complex destiny."
That sums up what I love about this series-- Don and Timmy are such real, interesting, complex characters.

Strachey Returns.......2007-04-09
Stevenson, Richard. "Shock to the System", The Haworth Press, 2007.
Strachey Returns
Amos Lassen and Literary Pride
Our gay private eye is back and if not as good as before, he is even better. "Shock to the System" deals with whether a man's death was actually suicide or murder and the read is very wicked fun.
Three different people ask Strachey to prove that the recent suicide by a gay man was not suicide at all but that he was murdered. The three want the person caught and convicted of murder and as Strachey begins to unravel the mystery, the reader is glued to his seat reading and guessing while being entertained completely.
The police label the death of Paul Haig as a suicide. He supposedly overdosed on liquor mixed with prescription drugs. Haig's mother, however, believes that he was murdered and that the man who committed the crime was her dead son's lover. On the other hand, the lover insists that it was indeed murder that ended his lover's life and that the murderer was actually a psychiatrist whose practice was changing homosexuals to heterosexuals. The doctor, of course, insists that he did not commit the crime (he has no alibi) and is very interested in knowing who did the deed.
Leave it to our man Strachey to solve the mystery and as he does so the reader has a lot of fun following the plot through its twists and turns. The real fun starts when Strachey discovers that there is a common link between Haig's mother, Haig's lover, and Haig's psychiatrist. We soon see that the doctor and the mother harbor great hatred for homosexuals but is that enough to make either of them cold-blooded killers?
Again, Stevenson writes a strong social commentary while providing his reader with some real fun. I have never been a real mystery fan but I am slowly becoming one by reading the Donald Strachey Mysteries. Not only do they give us stories filled with suspense, they allow us to have a good hard look at the world I which we live. That in itself is no easy job and Stevenson does t beautifully. I can't wait to read the entire series.
Fun Read for the Gay Man.......2005-09-28
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Richard Stevenson's A SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM: A DONALD STRACHEY MYSTERY. The mystery kept my interest and the wide range of "possible" villians kept me guessing to the end. I especially enjoyed reading a novel clearly written by a gay male. This is not a sex novel but the interactions between Strachey and his life partner were funny, sexy and real life. The only reason that it did not receive five stars was the price for a relatively short read.
One of the Best Mystery Writers Today!.......2003-03-25
If you've read one of Stevenson's "Donald Strachey" mysteries, you will want to read the whole series, and then you will be eagerly waiting for his next mystery to be published. Stevenson's mysteries are addictive, mainly because the characters are so believable, there are more twists and turns to keep you constantly guessing, and they are not boringly serious, they can be quite funny at times.
This story opens as Albany's gay Private Investigator, Donald Strachey, is asked to investigate the death of Phyllis Haig's, gay son, Paul. Apparently the mother believes his lover, Larry, killed Paul, and that it was not a suicide as the police seem to believe. Vernon Crockwell enters the story as the controversial psychologist whose practice is devoted to "curing" homosexuals. Strachey ends up with three clients who want to hire him, to find out the truth, but Strachey soon becomes aware there are a lot of unanswered questions. As the story reveals, Paul Haig's death is much more complicated then he expected. Prepare yourself for a lot of surprises with this one.
The interaction between Donald Strachey and his long-time partner, Timmy, is always well done, and very realistic. All lovers of good mysteries, whether gay or heterosexual, will appreciate this book. Stevenson is a fine writer who knows how to weave a shocking and gripping mystery.

Another Fine Addition.......2001-08-09
Judith Tarr continues her Avaryan Rising saga with another fine addition. It is a must have for a true fan of the previos novels, and works well by itself to introduce new fans to the series and inspire them to seek out the earlier Avaryan Rising novels. While it may not be quite as powerful as the originals, Spear of Heaven is still an excellent read and should not be missed by anyone who has read any of the first four volumes.

vegetarian book.......2007-04-20
I agree with the other 3 star review. This book is very highly vegetarian, no milk, no eggs.... The author is very, very anti-dairy, and emphasizes it over and over and over and over, you get the idea. There were some helpful general ideas in the book though, so I am giving it a 3 star.
Promotes a diet that is sugar free and vegan........2006-02-18
For many people the diet they suggest would be a major change. Here's the basics: Zero meats/dairy/eggs. Zero sugar. Three vegetables a day. Five whole grains a day. Three fruits a day. Two legumes (beans/peas/lentils) a day. I havn't read the whole book as this is not a diet I am willing to live on. For those of you who are, more power (and health) to you!
