The Best Cat Story in the World.......2007-05-16
May Sarton, poet and journal-writer extraorindaire, wrote a novella/poem to the Cat, the Gentleman Cat, called "The Fur Person". I have reread this masterpiece every year for the past 25 years. "The Fur Person" is for children and adults, for everyone!
Treasured Gift Book for Cat Lovers.......2007-05-13
May Sarton is an insightful writer in all of her books. Although I am not a cat lover, I read the book first before deciding whether or not my cat-lover reader friends would enjoy this book. I know they will. The hardcover edition is especially nice for a gift. The illustrations in the book are a treasure as well.
Cats Rule!.......2007-01-11
This book was given to me as a gift and after reading it I promptly bought 4 from Amazon to give as gifts for the holidays. The author has truly captured her cat's essence. It's beautifuly written and tells just how much love a cat needs and gives. I highly recommend this book.
A Really Great Book.......2007-01-11
This is a good book both children and adults. Couldn't wait to read the next chapter.
The best cat book ever!.......2006-08-18
This is such a wonderful book. It is short and easy to read, but so well written, by the late poet May Sarton. It is the story of her cat, Tom Jones. When the fur person decided it was time to settle down and find a home, he found Ms. Sarton and her partner, and became a precious part of their family. This book makes a very great gift for any cat lover. Unbelievably, it has been out of print from time to time. Thank goodness it is available both in paperback and a gift edition now.

Despite the striking frequency with which the Greek word kyrios, Lord, occurs in Luke's Gospel, this study is the first comprehensive analysis of Luke's use of this word. The analysis follows the use of kyrios in the Gospel from beginning to end in order to trace narratively the complex and deliberate development of Jesus' identity as Lord. Detailed attention to Luke's narrative artistry and his use of Mark demonstrates that Luke has a nuanced and sophisticated christology centered on Jesus' identity as Lord.

Sitka, Alaska, is a subarctic port surrounded by snow-dusted mountains. In addition to honest work, there is a lot of alcohol consumed and other people's money appropriated. Bars are loud, fights are mean. Rowdy youths party in the ancient Russian cemeteries, sitting on overturned gravestones. Sitka is hardly straight-laced, but murder is uncommon enough to be widely noted-like the Indian big-game guide killed by an ex-miner obeying voices from the earth's center. The victim's mother, a Tlingit Indian, summons to her nursing home a local investigator named Cecil Younger. The case is old and ostensibly solved. She wants him to investigate anyway. What he unearths is a virtual fairytale contrived to hide a primal conspiracy.
Set against the modern Alaskan frontier and the surviving pantheism of its indigenous population, The Woman Who Married a Bear is a brooding and exotic novel that touches on mysteries far beyond the conventional.
John Straley, a criminal investigator for the state of Alaska, lives in Sitka with his son and wife, a marine biologist who studies whales. He is the Shamus Award-winning author of The Curious Eat Themselves and The Music of What Happens.

Good story concept but confused execution.......2005-10-31
I liked this book, although I'll acknowledge its faults: 1. The writing is often sloppy. 2. The main character is an alcoholic, drug-addicted screwup, and does not encourage a loan of sympathy. 3. The novel is paced like a tedious movie, so that we get slammed with the main theme just before the end. 4. The author is underconfident and thus pads scenes. These aside, it is quite readable, with conversational language interspersed with witty and evocative wordplay. The voice of Cecil Young, as our narrator, is honest and clear, and gives us all the clues we need. It is an honest-to-goodness mystery with several levels, and requires cogitation. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to others.
terrific Alaskan private investigative tale.......2005-07-02
In Sitka hard boiled drinker Cecil Younger sits outside the Alaskan state run Pioneer Home for the elderly without any money and no idea what happened to his credit card. He cannot afford the ferry to leave town and wonders what cure to try next to battle alcoholism as only Haiku writing so far has helped a little. Cecil blames or thanks his drinking problem depending on how many he already has on his wife deserting him.
When his potential client Mrs. Victor finishes her breakfast Cecil enters the facility to talk with her. The elderly Tlingit woman hires Cecil to learn the whole truth why someone killed her son Louis, a big-game guide; she rejects the official position that a crazy man convicted of the murder committed the crime. Needing to escape his troubles and knowing the irony of taking on The Brown Bear Man Case, Cecil agrees to investigate to help the grieving mom get some closure though he expects to find nothing different until someone tries to shoot him. Cecil travels to Juneau and Anchorage to talk with family members and hunting guides not realizing that opening up this solved case could lead to a second murder, his.
THE WOMAN WHO MARRIED A BEAR is a terrific Alaskan private investigative tale that grips the audience on several fronts. Readers will appreciate the fallen hero struggling to regain some of his self esteem, but not always succeeding. Cecil's inquiries are electrifying as the suspense mounts with every new person he questions and his tour of Alaska enhances the excitement. Readers will welcome John Straley as a super addition to the forty-ninth state mystery pantheon.

Straley Captures Sitka.......2003-04-08
The opening chapter of the book is an amazing evocation of Sitka. This man knows the town, and southeast Alaska very, very well.
Main character Cecil Younger is hard to follow at times, but it's worth the trip. Loved this book!
A wonderful book.......2002-02-03
"The Woman Who Married A Bear" is an incredibly wonderful novel. It is filled with one-of-a-kind characters who mesh into a compelling, tangled story line. Add to that mix the uniqueness of Sitka, Alaska and and the craftsmanship of Straley as a writer, and you have a fine reading experience. I've ordered the other novels in the Cecil Younger series, and I can't wait to get at 'em.
lukewarm beginning.......2001-06-05
The two books I read last week both use the vast wilderness of Alaska as a backdrop. To me, "Into the Wild" by Jon Krakauer was a much better book. We are told on the jacket of "The Woman Who Married a Bear: An Alaska Mystery," that author John "Straley has studied poetry with Nelson Bentley at the University of Washington and fiction with James Welch." The result is a stilted, self-conscious writing style - trying too hard to write pretty and balance precariously between Raymond Chandler and Kent Haruf. The painfully obvious writing striations detract from the story flow. This is literature that just happens to be a murder mystery and not vice versa. Maybe the author mellows out in subsequent books?

Book Description
Down through the deathless centuries, the vampires had drunk human blood for sustenance and for sport. They preyed where they willed, for no mortal humans could resist their unclean powers. But now came the ultimate perversion, the unthinkable: someone was conscripting the vampires into the secret services of a foreign power.
No government agency or bureaucrat could control the Undead. The idea was absurd, as Dr. James Asher knew all too well.
Years in His Majesty's service had taught Asher the finer points of espionage. And he knew the secrets of the vampires--a familiarity hard-won in unwilling service to Don Simon Ysidro, oldest and most subtle of the hunters of the London night. What Asher didn't know was why one of England's established vampires would risk everything to travel across the European continent at the behest of a ruthless spymaster.
But he could see the terrifying potential of such an unholy alliance...

Traveling with the dead.......2003-12-06
Traveling With The Dead, by Barbara Hambly is an intriguing book that takes the reader through many different countries in search of two things, one: a vamipire who might get involved in some business that might cause trouble for the British and two: Lydias husband, James Asher, who is after the vampire Ernchester.
The book begins with James Asher, a former British intelegance agent, spotting a dangerous spymaster, Karolri, meeting with a known London vampire, Earl of Ernchester, in a railway station. Even though Asher is no longer an agent, he feels obligated to follow them in search of an answer to their mysterious appearance together. After receiving a letter which sounded very sketchy, Lydia, Ashers' knowledge seeking, young wife, enlisted the aid of the oldest and most dangerous vampire in all of London (Don Simon Yisdro) to rescue him from the trap he was stumbling into unaware. All three parties travel through Paris, Vienna and on to Constantinople. Asher and Anthea (the 200 year old vampire wife of Ernchester) after Karolyi and Ernchester who are being followed by Yisdro, Lydia and Margaret.
The book portrays the spirit of love that grows between hearts and souls. Throughout the book we see Lydia's infatuation with Yisdro although she loves her husband greatly and is trying to rescue him. We also see Yisdros' love for Lydia when he gives up killing humans for her and slowly becomes more vampirish due to the fact that that he's not drinking human blood. We also see how much Anthea loves her husband Ernchester yet she still admires something about Asher and the same goes for him. Although everyone seems to be infatuated by someone other then their own partner, they all remain loyal to one another despite their curiosity.
I really enjoyed reading this book, although it was pretty slow throughout the first section and the vocabulary was a bit difficult. It was very mysterious and enthralling, I also enjoyed the ending greatly. Id defiantly recommend this book to others.
Old favourite.......2002-06-28
This is one of my "junk reads", the old favourites I pull out to read one more time when I've run out of everything new.
James Asher is a former spy who has retired into the sedate life of an Oxford don, but finds the habits of his old life hard to break. When he spots the vampire Earl of Ernchester in company with Ignace Karolyi, a man Asher knows full well is a spy for the Austro-Hungarian Empire, his sense of responsibility leads him to chase them across Europe. For Asher knows only too well the power of vampires, and the thought of them in the service of any intelligence service is just too horrible to contemplate. Asher leaves a message with Lydia, his young doctor wife, telling her where to seek news of him in Vienna - but Lydia, following up a remembered reference in a medical journal, realises that her husband is going to seek help of a double agent. And so she sets off after her husband. She is joined in Paris by the vampire Don Simon Ysidro, to whom she had appealed for help, and Margaret Potton, a foolish ex-governess whom Ysidro has beguiled into loving him in order to have a suitable chaperone for Lydia - Ysidro being an Spanish lord of the Tudor era who is very concerned with appearances. Eventually, all roads lead to Istanbul, and we learn the reasons behind Ernchester's involvement with Karolyi, and what is really at stake in the worlds of vampires and Europe of the early twentieth century.
This is a lush book, full of description. I can't speak for the accuracy of the period detail, and I do think Hambly overdoes it sometimes, but the book is certainly atmospheric. The pace lags somewhat after it leaves Vienna, and the goings-on amongst the vampires of Istanbul were rather hollow. I did find it a pity that the resolution of the Ernchester storyline came with such a let-down, followed by bloody melodrama.
However, the characters are really what makes this story worth reading. Even those who appear only briefly are very well drawn; for example, Halliwell, the spy posted in Vienna, and the British ambassador's wife in Istanbul. There are also personal journeys for each of the three main characters: Asher, Lydia, and Ysidro. Asher finds himself caught up in a life he wanted to leave behind, recalling the terrible choices he made that led to him abandon his spying career. He has changed, but that makes the task ahead of him harder still. Lydia finds herself drawn to Ysidro, repellent though she finds his vampiric nature; and Ysidro is drawn to Lydia, despite knowing how she feels about him. The real end of this book only comes with the resolution of the situation between Ysidro, Lydia, and the jealous Margaret. Ysidro makes a hard choice that Asher applauds, recognising what Ysidro has done and why - because he once did the same thing himself. It is a moving end to the book.
Mesmerizing, hypnotic, tasty, delicious, exciting adventure!.......2001-06-02
Even better than the first. I enjoyed it tremendously. This book put a glamour over me. I was as drawn to continue reading its pages as Lydia was drawn to Ysidro or James to Anthea. It was heartbreaking, terrifying, enthralling, exciting, interesting, creative. Reading this book was thoroughly satisfying. I recommend it highly to anyone who enjoys vampire lore or vampire fiction. Hambly's is a class unto itself, so unique.
Dark temptations.......2000-12-15
I picked up Barbara Hambly's vampire novels in a fit of boredom, and was unable to put them down. They are dark and rich as a Black Forest cake. The characters, human and inhuman, are enticingly complex and fascinating.
Once again, professor and ex-spy James Asher and his obsessively scholarly bride are swept into the intrigues of the vampires. Dark secrets unfold as Asher tracks the ruthless agent Karolyi and the world-weary vampire Earl of Ernchester -- not realizing that his wife has enlisted the aid of the oldest and most dangerous of the London vampires to rescue him from the trap into which he is stumbling unaware.
Alliances shift among the living and the dead, and through this tangle Lydia Asher and her inhuman companion must weave their way and find their peace. And as James draws closer to the secret of the Deathless Lord, he finds his only way out is through the deadliest path of all.
Try, if you can, to read each novel in one sitting -- alone.
Slowly paced, but satisfying.......2000-09-09
I haven't yet read _Those Who Hunt The Night_ , despite reccomendations, but when I found this book I snatched it up. Despite what I found to be a slow pace, which sometimes made me flip pages impatiently, I did enjoy the character development. The ending more than repays any patience you may expend. A good, deep read which I predict may get better upon a second readthrough.

The man should know better........2006-06-13
Would you trust a doctor who confused plants with animals? Mr Goglia does this when he calls yeast a bacteria. They are not the same.
Secondly, would you trust a doctor who told you to take poison. Mr Goglia does this when he advocates that you drink an ounce of water for every pound of body weight per day. I weigh 260 pounds. That means I would drink 260 ounces or 33 8-ounce glasses or over two gallons a day. Has he never heard of hyponatremia? This condition exists because you drink so much water that you deplete the sodium in your blood. Does he allow salt, the best source of sodium for most of us, in his diet? What would you guess? If you guessed "No!" you'd be correct.
This Program Works!!!.......2006-04-15
Not only does Philip's food program work in losing extra body fat, it keeps you sane too. There is no more question about what will I eat today? Not only did I read the book, but I see Philip in his office for personal nutrition counseling. This is the only program that has EVER worked for me. Philip is a genious! I've learned more from him about nutrition than any doctor or trainer.
Best Book on Nutrition and how it affects us.......2006-03-24
This book does not take too much time to read. It is written in a great format. First the schooling of nutrition and the different metabolic types. Next how to determine which type are you. Then it goes into the way the program works with different levels, and portions of foods to increase and get your body to the best metabolic state, and the highest metabolic temperature. (100%)I thought the most important fact was that after considerable weight loss, the program keeps adjusting to the new weight. I think it is important to point out just as Phil Goglia pointed out, weight is not as important as the "space you occupy". I recomment this book to everyone who ever wanted to know why they couldn't pack on muscle easily, or why diabetes is becoming an epidemic in this country, or why they are overweight or lack energy etc.. Will answer many questions.
One thing, I still think the water thing is too much. I had to cut it down. It kept me going to the bathroom all day!!
Not a crazy diet.......2005-11-20
I think the science behind the ideas in this book is good and it makes sense, it's definitely NOT a typical "insane" diet, especially considering the amount of daily calories I'm supposed to ingest is about 35-40% more than what I would have doing Weight Watchers or Ediets.
That is the part that I see a lot of people having difficulty with; actually raising your calories instead of lowering them(that is, if according to the test in this book your metabolism is not efficient enough). The idea is to picture your metabolism as a furnace, and you need to add fuel to the fire regularly or it sputters out and tries to conserve itself(that is by hoarding fat instead of burning it because it doesn't know when you're going to feed it again).
I do wish there were more recipes instead of suggestions. It tells you exactly what types of food to eat, so it is easy to adjust to your own menu and likes, but I personally would like it if it was even more explicit and included recipes and menu's. They do have a cookbook for the program on the website which I might try out. Also, I didn't see any allotment for small amounts of fat to add, for example if you wanted a tablespoon of olive oil to your salad. It seems to be discouraged on this program but I need a bit more fat in my diet to feel satisfied.
Overall this is a good low-fat program that is adjustable according to your metabolic type. If I get good results from it what I may do is tweak the percentages(I'm Fat/Protein Efficient) to 45% Protein, 30% Fat and 25% Carbs and see how that works.
This is an education in nutrition--no more fad diets!!!!!!!!.......2003-10-22
Here it is short and simple...I never dieted my whole life. I have now reached that over 45 age and experienced some shocking changes. OK, I figured I would starve myself for awhile, etc. etc. Result? I got fatter. My husband brought me this book and my first instinct was to toss it out, but he made me promise I would read it. Here I am thirteen weeks later and two sizes smaller. I have not been hungry one day. I believe so much in this program that I encouraged my sister to buy the book and to talk to our Aunt who is almost 80 yrs old and obese. After 10 weeks my sister lost 30 lbs and 4inches around her thighs. My Aunt lost 20 lbs after just 9 weeks. She actually walked a flight of stairs that she hasn't done in years. Her doctor is ecstatic! They are both sticking to it and said it is really easy to follow this program. I won't get into all the lab results, but for example my ratio went from 3.5 to 2.7! The best thing about this program is that I feed my family everything I eat! No special grocery lists that gets so expensive. We all like the change in our nutrition. This is a realistic way of eating and exercising. This is a change of life that is attainable for anyone. Also, I have called Phillip to ask questions...he actually called me back! He is great! He really listened and helped me. Thanks, Phillip! You will be hearing from my mother and father-in-law soon!
