Just Amazing.......2007-05-14
I finished this book, put it down, picked it up, and read it again. The historically inevitable ending (for those who know history) does nothing to detract from Welch's ability to keep you hanging on every word, right up to the the end. The seamless integration of the physical and spiritual planes provides a refreshing view into not just Native American life, but life in general.
I just can't believe I didn't discover this book sooner.
FOOLSCROW.......2007-04-05
Being an enrolled Native-American myself, and having a good understanding of the history of Native/Anglo encounters, I recommend this book highly as an accurate description of life on the plains during the last days of the Blackfeet... brilliant!
Historic and Hopeful.......2006-09-06
The expansion and plunder of the American West permanently altered and almost eradicated the rich civilization of the Plains nations. This deliberate cultural destruction and genocide is shown with great sensitivity and detail in James Welch's novel "Fools Crow", a beautiful and accurate portrayal of a time of dramatic change (1860's - 1870's) in the American West. As is illustrated in the novel, the Pikuni; Kainahs; Siksikas (geographical-linguistic groups known as Blackfeet), and other Native American societies, rich with culture and tradition, were detrimentally impacted by white greed, ignorance, and the influx of disease. Despite the odds, the novel also conveys a sense of muted hope - the potential for a future where some aspects of native people's collective history, stories, and traditions continue.
boring, boring, boring.......2006-08-09
I must say that this was one of the most boring books i have ever read in my life. It is a complete waste of time to read this book. There is no plot. Honestly i would rather pull my own teeth out then read this book again. This book is pretty much 400 pages of wasted paper. If I even have to look at this book again i will probably throw up. Anyway i hope this was helpful to anyone wanting to read Fools Crow. If you ask me it just sucked.
Fools Crow is just the tip of the iceberg, if you were moved by this book you MUST read Fools Crow Wisdom and Power.......2006-02-11
Fools Crow is a strong beginning and a background for the book which follows, Fools Crow, Wisdom and Power. Wisdom and Power is a lifechanging book. If we could all live our lives with half the integrity and spirit Frank Fools Crow had the world would be a better place.
Book Description
This special tenth-anniversary edition of Fools Crow: Wisdom and Power contains a remembrance of Fools Crow by Russell Means; an 8-page black and white photo insert; and a new afterword by the author, Thomas E. Mails.

knowledge of the old ways.......2007-06-12
For those who have read Fools Crow by Thomas E Mails should follow up with this book. If you have not read it I would sertainly do so as a companian to this book. Timeless Wisdom from the Old Lakota Holy Man that anyone can bennefit from the power of these teachings.
Superior insight .......2007-04-11
For a person interested in American Indian Medicine People, this Book, and it's companion book - Fools Crow, ISBN 0-8032-8174-9, will
read a Treasure of insight, clarity, simplicity & wonder. This reviewer has been reading books on this subject for more than 40 years, and these 2 books are the true Treasures of this world view. Fools Crow is a magnificant.
inconsistent and somewhat hard to believe.......2007-03-15
Fools Crow Wisdom and Power is interesting in that the memoir is an account of a Sioux "holy" man. Yet, Fools Crow's holiness is not consistent. He has some good ideas about general spirituality but this is more of a plea for the Native American movement.
I read it for a graduate class in religion but was disappointed.
Everyone Should have this book.......2006-12-13
A great man, a great vision. An example to every human being who walks upon our Mother Earth. One that should be followed in every aspect of life. If only there were more like this man what a better world we would live in. Inspiring, encouraging. What more can I say than this is a MUST have on your bookshelf.
a master's methods.......2003-06-27
thomas mails' honesty and humility in recognition of the potent and vibrant personality of fool's crow allows him to become a nearly transparent medium for this account of a shaman's personal methods and rituals.
at their most effecftive, shamanistic rituals use p[hysical symbols to trigger and continue cycles of effect and reaction between the individual practitioner and the world-system as a whole. this book doesn't go into great depth in presenting the fundamental metaphysic of the native american heritage that fool's crow continued, but provides a rich and meticulously detailed account of demonstrations of its practice by a healer, teacher and leader.
this book may tempt immitators and pretenders; they might find themselves playing with fire. this volume should not be taken as a single source outside of the greater context of the heritage it celebrates and partially describes, but it can be a valuable supplementary resource for a careful student, or the agile and humble explorer.
Customer Reviews:
A bit disappointing..........2001-02-21
After reading Fools Crow: Wisdom and Power (which is one of my all time favorite books!), I was naturally drawn to reading the biography of Fools Crow. Alas, I found the book a bit tedious and disappointing. I am sure Thomas Mails wrote an accurate account, but his style and the points he emphasizes make for a plodding read.
Despite these troubles, I found the book to be informative of life on the 20th century Pine Ridge Reservation. The problems outlined in this book are not going away, and if this book raises concerns about what must be done to correct these terrible issues it has done a great service.
This book is also very good in regards to giving a history of the Sioux since the Great Sioux War of 1876. So often the history of this great nation is placed in the background to the white culture making it difficult to see with any degree of accuracy. This book is from the vantage point of a Sioux elder and tells the sad tale of an oppressed people.
The story of Frank Foolscrow.......2000-08-04
This is the story of Frank Foolscrow: The Ceremonial chief of the Teton Sioux:
I very much enjoyed the story of the politics on the reservation.
I do have several problems with this book.
1. The story was recorded by Thomas E. Mails a Lutheran, and I found it disconcerting that in some places the Term "God" is used, and in others the Sioux term "Wakan Tanka" is used.
2. On page 100 Mr. Mails equates the tobacco ties as a rosary. The Tobacco ties had nothing with a rosary. They were simply offerings to his 405 helpers.
3. On page 107 Mr. Mails implies that Frank Foolscrow was a Catholic. It is clear that he retained his spirituality.
4. I am VERY disturbed by what he calls "The Kettle Dance". I am not from that culture, and do not know what it represents to the people. So I have no right to judge it.
5. The colors associated with the directions are wrong. I don't know if Mr. Mails got this wrong, or Mr. Foolscrow believed this information was too sacred to share. The accurate colors for the Sioux medicine wheel is.
Black in the West and represents Earth. White in the North and represents Air. Red in the East and represents Fire. Yellow in the South and represents Water Green in the Center and represents Spirit
You can see the accurate layout of the Sioux medicine wheel on the cover of "Native Wisdom" by Ed McGaa.

Biographical telling of Fools Crow life.......2000-03-27
This book is the counterpoint to Fools Crow: Wisdom and Power. It is more a retelling of his life story, there is less description of his worldview which is more the focus of Wisdom and Power. One feels reading this that he could have gone on and on about the politics at the reservation, he doesn't and for me seeing how he expresses his views about this situation while keeping a gentle ad moderate tone is quite revealing of his personality. There is a fascinating account of his exerience at Bear Butte, which is the highlight of the book.

Book Description
Singer, composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and superstar, Sheryl Crow is one of the most respected and accomplished artists on the rock scene today, with eight Grammy awards, sold-out concerts, and album sales in excess of 20 million copies. Her distinctive vocal style and idiosyncratic sound, which blends rock with "alternative country," folk with "neo-hippy," has been widely imitated. Sheryl Crow: No Fool to This Game tells the unvarnished story behind the south Missouri native who, in addition to her own accomplishments, has collaborated on stage and in the studio with many of the world's most celebrated musical artists. This mesmerizing biography digs beneath the media hype and public image to uncover the full facts about this talented, complex, independent, and incredibly driven woman who, within a relatively short period of time, has blazed a rich and intricate trail on her own terms. New York Times best-selling author Richard Buskin has closely tracked Sheryl Crow's career from the release of her award-winning 1993 debut album, Tuesday Night Music Club, through her equally successful follow-ups, including her new 2002 album, C'mon, C'mon. Filled with in-depth research and personal interviews with Sheryl Crow's friends, colleagues, and even adversaries, this book offers a fascinating, multifaceted look at a life that has encompassed numerous highs and lows-while also providing rare insight into how a star is born, nourished, and marketed in today's cutthroat music industry.
Customer Reviews:
Not too much to expect..........2005-04-02
This book is very enjoyable - up until the part dealing with Tuesday Night Music Club. This part easily takes up 2/3 of the book. It also becomes over-informative about the album and its making - there's so many little remarks and infos that really aren't that interesting about the album, and make reading that section tedious.
Everything else in the book relating to the other albums is basically short mentions of them, compared to the TNMC section. Don't expect to learn anything much about the follow-up albums.
In short, I wanted a bio of Sheryl Crow, not a long-winded overdone account of how TNMC was made.
Average reading.......2003-08-11
This is currently the only book about Sheryl Crow in print. In the first chapter, the author, Richard Buskin, states and explains how Sheryl wanted no part in this book. It's easy to see why. While the book is informative, it draws from too many of the same sources. I lost count of the times he quotes VH1's Behind the Music special on her. Not only that, but the text is often very meandering and the author often repeats himself. However there are some interesting accounts of her albums. Like the acclaimed first album that was never released because Sheryl did not like the polished sound of the record, to the behind the scenes turmoil behind her first album TUESDAY NIGHT MUSIC CLUB, in which Sheryl was accused of taking all the credit and giving none to the band. That was the longest part of the book. Next was SHERYL CROW's second album and how she did not want to work with Bill Botrell who she worked with on her first released album. This is when the book became more interesting, because it dealt with where Sheryl became more in control of the type of music she wanted to do and how she wanted to present herself. I enjoyed the story of how the song "The Book" came to be. Next was THE GLOBE SESSIONS, her 1998 album, and how she was having trouble recording the album and finding the right songs, how it was delayed etc. Then he explains about her current album C'MON C'MON and the trouble she suffered during the recording process such as depression, not wanting to record, and everything like that. The book does not talk much about her relationships with Eric Clapton and Owen Wilson. It's not that bad a book but hopefully there will be an autobiography in the future or at least a book written about her with better references and quotes.
Great effort especially given his limitations.......2003-08-04
Hope that Mr. Buskin gets an opportunity to write an authorized biography of Ms. Crow. In the introduction, he freely acknowledges that neither she, her family nor her management would speak to him. In spite of this, his book seems to present a pretty balanced account of her career and avoids being sleazy. He provides terrific insight into the record industry and how records and stars are made. Still, I would like to read "the rest of the story...," to hear more from Ms. Crow and her family. Would recommend to book to anyone interested in Ms. Crow and her career.
Behind the Music.............2003-04-07
It's fascinating reading about how my favorite Sheryl Crow songs were birthed into existence. That was my favorite part of the book and Mr. Buskin did a superb job of detailing the history of all of her songs. This is a gripping story of Ms. Crow's rise to fame via determination, hard work and a single-minded ambition to succeed. I came away applauding her tenacity, her talent and her sheer will to survive in the dog-eat-dog music business. If you enjoy Sheryl Crow's music then this book is a must-read for you. You'll come away feeling as if you know her and her music in a deeper way. I highly recommend this well-written book.
Some Good Insight But Certain Aspects Are Missing.......2003-02-21
Don't get me wrong. I am a fan of Sheryl Crow's music. Furthermore, I admire her perserverance to make it in the music business. However, Richard Buskin's unauthorized biography No Fool To This Game seems only able to tell part of the story. In addition, the writing style is not easy to read with too much hearsay from VH1 episodes.
Richard Buskin does give some good details of Crow's growing up years and her musical influences. Buskin seems to portray her as your average teen with typical mood swings. Her later experiences in rock n roll bands are documented but somehow nothing really excites the listener. Probably due to the fact that Buskin could not get any documentation from Sheryl herself. The scattered information from her peers just does not seem to cut it.
The details behind her working with Michael Jackson and Don Henley are pretty interesting. Its amazing how the gloved one is portrayed as so aloof to his fellow band mates. Nonetheless, Sheryl's networking abilities are quite inspiring.
Also of interest are her several romantic adventures which unfortunately did not lead to true love. At least she and Eric Clapton are good friends. Whereas these insights do help me relate even more to the words and the attitude to Sheryl Crow's songs, somehow I am left with the feeling that there is more information behind the scenes that Mr. Buskin could not give us. We need more than just quotes for a good biography.
The information behind the key songs on Sheryl's recordings are pretty interesting. However the meandering writing style is certainly distracting.
The Coda chapter stands strong as Buskin gives some good quotes on Sheryl which give insight to her true personality. A good glossary section and a nice photo arrangment as well.
Some good insight on Sheryl Crow yes indeed. However, I am hopeful that someone else will come out with a more detailed account of this very talented singer.

Okay, so I'm a little bias, here...........2005-12-22
Terri Witek has enlightened me with poetry in Fools and Crows. I love the way she conveys her "models" from the famous paintings by Jan Van Eyck. Perhaps my favorite is The Arnolfinis from Jan Van Eyck's Double Portrait. Witek imagines the marital pressures faced during the Renaissance period. Her writing is perfect!
Best Poetry Book of the Year.......2004-05-29
Witek's poems sparkle with intelligence and offer multiple layers of meaning. With her lyric descriptions of Renaissance art and odd Catholica (such as, in one poem, a children's ruler depicting Bible stories in holographic pictures), the poet is consistently powerful and surprising. A great book.
contemporary poetry at its best.......2004-01-04
I would suggest this book of poetry to any reader or lover of art. It is a lyrical exploration of images that is moving and imaginative. There is beauty and strength throughout.

Book Description
When young Sarah Parrish takes a skiing vacation to Gulmarg, a resort nestled in the mountains above the fabled Vale of Kashmir, she anticipates an entertaining but uneventful stay. But when she discovers that the deaths of two in her party are the reuslt of foul play, she finds herself entrusted with a mission of unforseen importance. And when she leaves the ski slopes for the Waterwitch, a private houseboat on the placid shores of the Dal Lake near Srinagar, she discovers to her horror that the killer will stop at nothing to prevent Sarah from piecing the puzzle together.
Customer Reviews:
Rather lukewarm murder mystery.......2007-06-11
M M Kaye's mysteries, although now feeling rather dated, are still good fun. Better known for writing "The Far Pavilions", her mysteries are also interesting reads as the settings are so different from foggy London streets.
In "Death In Kashmir" M M Kaye paints a fascinating picture of Kashmir on the cusp of independence, when the British rule in India finished in 1947. Her descriptions and evocation of the time and place are excellent and provide an interesting setting for her plot. Unfortunately I felt the characters in this story were rather wooden, they all spoke in a rather over-dramatic "jolly hockeysticks" style and were perhaps rather crude ciphers of normal people. There's a faint (very faint!) romance in this story but this is a minor part of the plot which is about intelligence operatives becoming compromised and killed in Kashmir and our heroine, Sarah Parrish, finding herself in the thick of it. There are various minor plot twists, creeping around in the dark, that kind of thing, but overall this story was rather a disappointment. I found myself skim-reading the end, especially when the anti-communist paranoia of earlier decades appeared in this book. The setting is excellent but unfortunately this book is let down by characterisation and the rather over-long plot.
A superior "who done it"!.......2006-08-08
Beautifully written and evocative of their exotic settings, M. M. Kaye's mysteries are simply the best.
The best of M M Kaye's Mystery Series.......2006-01-05
Orphaned Sarah Parrish has travelled to India at the behest of her aunt to live for while, this is on the cusp of the transfer of India from British Rule in 1948.
Sarah goes up to Kashmir skiing with a party of other English and while there meets Janet who turns out to be a secret agent with a message. Janet is being stalked and wants to get out of Kashmir, someone will be sent to get her out but she doesn't know if she will be able to get out before she is killed, so she passes on a message to Sarah.
After Janet mysteriously dies Sarah does not tell anyone what she knows, but several months later she receives a letter from Janet's lawyers with a lease to a boat in Kashmir provided and a note from Janet asking her to stay there. Sarah knows whatever message she wants to pass on is on that boat and so she returns with friends to Kashmir but doesn't tell anyone what purpose it is for.
Meantime Sarah has been interested in the gorgeous but mysterious Charles Mallory. He is not interested in any women having a gorgeous fiancee at home, it seems anyway. However he does end up kissing her, and then turning up in Kashmir as well. It turns out that Charles has a secret he doesn't want known, and Sarah must trust someone to help her find the message Janet left, and also to protect her from the other possible enemies including Helen Warrender and Mir.
Lots of possibilities of problems and some creepy moments of people standing in shadowed doorways or intruding on black nights. Nice and suspenseful
Loved the characters, and in this I really enjoyed the period speak and drama. The heroine, Sarah, was feisty and in keeping with her time, and there was a nice turn in romance.
Not a very good read! .......2005-11-28
Kaye goes boring sometimes more often that not, actually. Here she keeps on describing the basic scenery with great detail which after a time gets boring. She did the same thing in Far Pavilions. Where page after page give vivid description of the Afghan bore, sorry I mean war! But the last few pages are quite enjoyable - when the real villain is revealed. Inadequate and the plot also seemed far-fetched, though the same genre is still being written about and seen on TV! The Russian Menace
Death In Berlin is so much better!
Better than Dan Brown anytime!.......2004-10-17
This is one of my most loved books. It's true that I have read deeper books with more substance, even in the mystery genre. But M.M. Kaye wrote a top notch mystery for her time. She truly transports the reader to Kashmir, I could feel the house boat rocking as I was turning the pages. The ending came as a complete surprise and was absolutely stunning. Yes, it is a light novel, but hey, isn't it entertainment we want from mysteries?

What came next, shocked me. Not what I saw... no. I had already seen Sam, I had already seen the insides of a human being, a human being whose heart had been methodically dined on for years.
No, what shocked me... was me.
Carter's heart, unlike Sam's, was large, full, healthy. As my eyes and mind absorbed the incredible spectacle, quickly overtaking me were calls from my twitching fingers, my growling gut, my resurrected taste for triumph that tingled in my teeth, my lips, and on my tongue--
I wanted his heart!
I wanted to rip it from his chest! Shake him awake, dangle his precious organ before his eyes!.
Did you know that some Hollywood movie executives are actually heart-eating humans who have sold their souls and now must devour organs in order to survive?
Neither did Blake Gardner.
Blake thought he had it all figured out. His plan was simple: move to Hollywood after graduating from college, attain a job at a powerful filmmaking company, find a beautiful soul mate, and achieve his dream of making movies in Hollywood. But he soon learns that his ambition can only be realized as long as he allows the evil executives in charge to devour his most vital organ.
Will Blake choose to give up his dreams-or his heart?

Customer Reviews:
Very touching like the film THE MOVIE HERO.......2006-02-10
This is an engaging and well written book, almost in journal fashion, about a young out-of-stater who ventures into Hollywood with big dreams of making it in the motion picture industry. Blake Gardner is 22, young and untouched. He gets his foot into the door only to quickly learn just how cutthroat his superiors can be. He is tortured and his faith is put to a huge test. Will he come out intact or will be be eaten alive? Any fan of the film that Brad T. Gottfred directed (The Movie Hero) will thoroughly enjoy this book. Highly recommended reading.
"Hungry" Definitely Fills You Up!.......2006-01-19
As a true fan of the character Blake from "The Movie Hero," I could not wait to read this latest installment. I was not disappointed. To understand through Blake's eyes the jaded soul destroying evils of Hollywood, I was left with worry that the individualistic spirit of Blake would be forever ruined by Hollywood. With the panache of a young Teddy Roosevelt and the fresh bravado of a young Marlon Brando (except able to speak clearly and no propensity to gain hundreds of pounds), Blake forges his own way through Hollywood's pitfalls, not unscathed, but certainly intact.
Here in these 240 pages, we can definitely truly debate the truthfullness of the adage: what does not kill you certainly can make you stronger! While the reader might not be stronger, he will certainly be ready for Blake's next swashbuckling adventure!
The real question is when is the movie coming out? Maybe they can make it when they are through making so many darn gay cowboy movies!

He has managed this in a style that is not only captivating but also clear and concise. I found the book a great help in preparing young players for competetive basketball. This book not only helps in solving a crisis (eg: a shooting slump) but also in preventing them.
A great read for coaches and players alike.
