Geologist-adventurer Philip Mercer finds himself drilling straight into the epicenter of an age-old conspiracy when a reclusive order of Himalayan monks predicts the end of the world-and sets a thermonuclear bomb in an underwater volcano to ensure that it comes to pass...
Customer Reviews:
What time is it?.......2006-09-29
By far the best of the Mercer series. This book is a change of pace for DuBrul, and a welcome one. Still action packed and fast paced; the story itself evolves into the storied Phoenix, as life and death come together as one. I enjoyed the character of Tisa, her mysteriousness folds around the story as it does with Mercer. There's not enough Harry and his cane, but it still deserves 5 stars. I couldn't help but equate the character "Luc", with Jordan's Wheel of Time, but alas another horrifying death to Mercer's credit. The ending should be mentioned because of its power. Is it abrupt? Yes. Does it fit with the story? Definitely. I do wonder if Mercer gets his watch back though. What time is it? It's time for another Mercer adventure. Enjoy.
goofy.......2006-03-13
DuBrul is a decent enough writer to keep you engrossed in this story until its end. But aside from that, this is a very silly book that is insane in its plot contrivances. I noticed on the cover that Clive Cussler said that this was a great book, and I have to say that if I were to name one author that DuBrul reminded me of, it would be Cussler. I have a lot of problems with Cusslers books and cant help but laugh often as I turn the pages. This is my first DuBrul and if 'Deep Fire Rising' is an indicator of what all of his books are like, DuBrul is skating on an edge even way more far-fetched than the ludicrous Cussler.
Philip Mercer is James Bond from the MoonRaker variety. The places that Mercer finds himself would never ever come about. If this story were to have some relevance in reality it would have needed to break the steps that Mercer takes into a dozen characters. Aside from that, Running benieth the story is this mystical group that predicts the future. Ahh, its painful. What saves the book and allows the reader to continue from one chapter to the next is DuBrul's excellent writing skills. You can do better than this book. It's not hard to find an author more skilled at crafting a plot. I would steer you away from DuBrul if I could.
First Time Reader of DuBrul.......2006-01-25
Having read his collaboration with Cussler, I couldn't wait to pick up a copy of one of his books. And it proved not to be disappointing at all. His knowledge of geology is written into the book without being boring to the average reader. I enjoyed this book and am thrilled to find another action author to savor.
The formula is getting old........2005-12-09
Jack Du Brul is a good writer, he actually is a very good writer; but he also is a Clive Cussler clone. And that may not necessarily be a good thing. His hero Philip Mercer is a carbon copy of Dirk Pitt. As a matter of fact Du Brul is acting as ghost writer for Cussler latest installment of his Oregon Files series.
His books are good entertainment, this one is a little exhausting, by the end of the book Mercer has gone around the world at least three times, unfortunately you are so tired you don't even care of the outcome anymore. The plots are also kind of dislodged, there is a plot line that starts in Area 51 that never gets resolved...
Anyway, if you like the Cussler stile Du Brul fits the bill, but I would try some of his other offerings like "The Medusa Stone" or "Pandora's Curse" instead of This one.
Out of sync.......2005-07-11
I have enjoyed Jack DuBrul's prior installments, and while I still enjoyed this one, it really seemed out of sync with the other books. There's not one single thing that doesn't work. It feels like he switched editors.
It's worth reading, but for a first time reader of his work, I would recommend starting with "Vulcan's Forge." and working through the timeline.
I hope that his next book is more in line with his earlier works.

The
Illustrated
Handbook
of
Succulent
Plants represents the first comprehensive taxonomic treatment of succulents in thirty years. It covers over 9000 taxa of all succulents except Cactaceae. This volume on the
Asclepiadaceae (milkweed family) presents all kinds of succulent plants from geophytic Raphionacme, leaf succulent Hoya to stem succulent Cynanchum and, of course, the popular stapeliads (carrion flowers). A total of 1119 species are included; of the 70 genera treated, 49 are covered in their entirety. The most species-rich assemblages are Ceropegia (lantern flowers) and Brachystelma. For the latter a complete generic treatment is presented for the first time. The handbook is devoted to a family famous for their outstandingly complex and beautiful flowers and is illustrated with 332 superb colour photos. Keys to genera are provided; for all accepted taxa, descriptions including typification and distributional data, full synonymy and literature references are given.

Book Description
In 1994, suffering from aching knees and painfully concerned about it, Lee Friedlander decided to prepare himself for a sedentary life. He began to pursue the still life as a possibility and maybe a way of photographic life--a dramatic shift for a man who has spent his life photographing on the street, in the woods, on the road, at parties, anywhere but sitting down. He tried a variety of subjects with a few good results, but nothing stood out until he began to look at the fresh flowers that his wife Maria placed around their home in cut-glass vases. But never mind the flowers. True to Friedlander's style, he very quickly found himself most interested in the stems. During the months of February, May, June and December of 1994, he focused his lens on wild arrays of stems and the optical splendor produced by light refracting through the glass vases that contained them. In 1998, Friedlander had both of his knees surgically replaced. Three months of recovery time passed during which he took no pictures, the only gap in almost 50 years of working. The next year, successfully rehabilitated and walking without pain, Friedlander decided to re-apply himself to the stems and finish them off as a subject. Published in a lush, oversize volume, printed with a special dry trap process, Stems is the result of this unusual saga in the photographer's career. Lee Friedlander and his camera have now returned to the street.

Finding Beauty in the Mundane.......2006-01-09
Lee Friedlander's monograph on STEMS not only represents a tender history of an artist's temporary battle with physical restriction and pain, it is also one of the more eloquent collections of black and white photography on a narrow subject to appear in book form.
These beautifully photographed and equally beautifully printed and presented series of images were taken when Friedlander was confined to sitting, a position not compatible with a photographer out in the fields of the world capturing life as it continues in motion. But due to physical restrictions, Friedlander had to either be artistically silent or elect to combat his dilemma by using his camera to study the simple beauty of nature at hand. And, so like his proclivities in all of his art, he elected to use the stems of flowers and plants as subject, including the cylinders and vases of water into which they had been placed. Some of the more eloquent photographs come at the end of the portfolio when Friedlander captured the containers of his subjects in the empty state - levels of water in class containers alone and in tandem. The results defy written description: these are subtle, tenuous, fragile works of art with few peers as still life.
The production of this portfolio is in keeping with the content: the cloth covered cover is in a mossy green and the binding, quality of paper and of reproductions is of the highest order. This is a unique and very beautiful book. Grady Harp, January 06
Exquisite images.......2005-10-21
I first caught a glimpse of Friedlander's _Stems_ displayed in the MoMa store in New York. It is a gorgeous book, sitting in front of me now. I keep it open at my desk instead of an actual vase of flowers- the images are somehow haunting, melancholy, and oh so still and hushed all at the same time. If you've ever chosen a bouquet of flowers not only for their color but for their structure or shape, the ragged and choppy line of a cut orchid, or smooth sweep of a calla lily, you will adore these photographs.
this is a wonderful book.......2004-01-08
yes, this is a wonderful magical book. essential even. and yes, i can imagine people breaking the binding and framing favorite images. it's that good. it reminded me that imogene cunningham turned to flowers when she had to stick around the house. who but friedlander wd think of sticking w/ the stems through glass vases. the design is a gift.
Brilliant Stems.......2003-10-14
This is a sensuous still life study of stems and gorgeously printed. The subject does not really matter: it might be called The Joy of Seeing. The three dimensional effect of these photographs makes for an unexpected joy .
A barbarian might cut the book up and frame the individual pages to hang on walls. The printing is superb. Could not think of a better photography gift.

A 19-year-old author can write a mature book, too.......2005-10-31
When I started to read this book, I didn't wait for it to make such a surprisingly good impression on me. This little story has poignantly reminded me of how much we, especially children, are in need of love, warmth, and involvement. A lot of thoughts came to me when I was reading this book like, for example, how or why it happens that some children today, who seem to have almost everything, are very outraged, unhappy, and ready to start aiming guns, whether at themselves or others.
I hope that parents will read this book, which was written from the heart of a young person who was recently a child himself. Maybe parents will understand how much children need their love, especially their fathers' love and attention. This book shows greatly that children need their fathers' attention almost as much as food and water.
Just one more thing I will add. With all the sad thoughts that came to me when I was reading it, I saw a light in this story, and I was thinking that anyone can find a strength to live. We must just find a sort of poetry in life, a kind of beauty in life, like a flower's stem, why not, that would lead us out of unhappiness to a sudden unexpected way to something good.
I also think that there would be a good movie made from this book if made by a good director.

Very informative and easy to read.......2004-10-22
"Dr. Gavin's Health Guide for African-Americans" is an informative book that is easy to read. It is not cluttered with a lot of medical terminology and Dr. Gavin explains things quite well. He comes across as someone who is truly concerned about the health of African-Americans and their children and people in general regardless of race. I most enjoyed the chapter on weight loss. This chapter doesn't include anything that you may have never heard before, but Dr. Gavin explains things in a realistic manner. Movement helps, exercise is important. Avoid empty calories like soda. The stories that he tells in the book make the book interesting also. I reccomend this book for someone interested in improving their own health or for someone who has a friend or family member whose health you may want to help them improve.
