3 out of 5 stars straightforward horror.......2007-02-02

Bryan Smith writes straightforward horror. Nothing more, nothing less. His books are like the literary equivalent of a late-night film. There may be rough edges but Smith's enthusiasm shines through; he's obviously a guy who loves the subject matter. The hellbent for leather story revolves around a secretive clan of people who act as grim reapers. One goes rogue, and before you know it, it's "Night of the Living Dead" crossed with "Salem's Lot."

One admirable thing that Smith does is portray rural Tennesseeans with some kind of dignity; the book has its fair share of backwoods idiots, but he balances it out with thoughtful characters as well.

1 out of 5 stars Juvenile and weak.......2006-12-27

I just tried to read death bringer and made 300 before I just started skimming and skipped to the end. The book was rather dull, needlessly gore (the scenes of violence added no sense of fear and where just way over the top), predictable, and worst of all just plain boring. I hate writing a poor review of someone's hard effort and I am sure the author is a talented and hard working writer but it does not show in this book. Furthermore based on the number of high reviews for this book I was just surprised about how really bad it is. I wonder if I just have way to high standards or if the other reviewers actually read the same book as me?

3 out of 5 stars Interesting plot twists, so-so zombie tale.......2006-10-07

Deathbringer is an ok zombie book. I got through it fairly quickly and so I can say that the author knows how to keep things moving along at a fairly good pace. As mentioned in other reviews, he is a bit heavy handed on the metaphors but I could tolerate that for the most part because even though the book was thick with them, they didn't necessarily distract me too terribly much for the flow of the story.

Bryan Smith attempts to create a variation on the Grim Reaper here that I really didn't buy into fully. A secret organization more powerful and ancient "than the Illuminati" kind of deflated it for me: the Reapers and the Guardians; even "God" is the "ruling power" which brings to mind a bunch of behind the scenes corporations, politicians, and guilds running things rather than any sort of demons/angels/god-like beings. As potent as the Grim Reaper/Deathbringer is in this story, he and the rest of these behind the scenes power brokers did not inspire any awe or amazement in me.

A bunch of disgruntled Reapers created a book with the power to destroy "god" that they never dared use. Now it has fallen into the hands of this maverick, who decides to use it to bring the dead back to life which will destroy mankind so he can in turn confront "god" and destroy him/her/it...or them? I am not really sure what his truly desired end result is except for perhaps sweet oblivion after centuries upon centuries of immortality. Revenge for tricking him into becoming immortal? Given that he has the options to commit "suicide" at his finger tips the entire time so he can be removed from immortality, I must admit I am not too clear on his real motivation. Revenge I suppose is enough, but it just does not come across as too compelling. Especially when this guy seems to get so much of a thrill from killing people-he is doing a job he apparently loves, so why be so unhappy with management?

The story itself is entertaining enough and the characters mostly plausible, especially as things come together towards the end. Even so, there were some things that I had some issues with. I thought the Melinda character a bit over the top, but she makes more sense as the story came to its conclusion-you come to understand why she is what she is. I question a statement made towards the beginning of the book indicating that one of the main characters essentially has the last bits of his sanity "crumbled to ash" and yet he seems just fine after a short seizure and is one of the more rational characters throughout the story. Hawthorne was a character that needed to be either much more mysterious so we never know too much about him or he needed to be fleshed out with greater detail so that there would be more empathy and understanding for what he must do, where he has come from, etc. As it stands, he is just someone who moves the plot along-necessary, but not very compelling or intriguing. Even with these minor criticisms, I was clear on character motivations and why and how they reacted the way they did. They carry the story to the very end with relative ease.

The zombies in the book did not really scare me. Since I read zombie tales to be scared and most do just that, it made it harder for me to appreciate this story. The unrelenting craving for flesh and their implacable nature just disturbs me. Knowing that for all your efforts to fend them off, you are likely going to become one of them soon enough is extremely ominous. Somehow these zombies were just not as awe inspiring. Perhaps it all seemed like parlor tricks and magic instead of real wrath of god kind of stuff that has animated them in this tale. Another reason might just be that it seems from the beginning of the book the solution to stopping them is totally obvious and apparent rather than shrouded in mystery, which can add quite a bit of tension to things as well.

Some other reviewers were critical of the ending but for me it was the best part of the book. Without giving anything away, the book redeemed itself in the last few pages from some of my stronger criticisms when some twists and surprises happen that I appreciated. While I did not buy into all the concepts the author created througout the story, he worked within them to create a good ending that satisfied me.

I consider this book ok-not great, but certainly not bad either. To me, a zombie tale can be populated with traditional or newer variations of the undead and can work either way. Zombies can be fast, slow, intelligent, dumb, can speak, be mute...whatever. But as with all stories, in this genre or any other, the story needs to be interesting, compelling and the characters must generate strong emotions, be it anger, happiness, love, hate, etc. This story had some of that, but just not enough to make it memorable or anything more than an entertaining and quick read soon forgotten after the last page is turned.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Fear The Reaper.......2006-09-01

In the small town of Dandridge an ancient hatred is rekindled. A blinding desire for revenge, for freedom, for the ultimate power is born from the blackest heart filled with darkness and centuries old despair caused by a bleak existence devoid of humanity and compassion. An existence whose sole remaining purpose is to destroy everything that was once beautiful in the world. To create a necropolis; a vile circle ultimately leading into the spiraling chasm of living death where all life is consumed in the chaotic dance of power and vengeance, sorrow and confusion, and a mind altering evil so foul in its origins and ultimate desire as to be unthinkable. A world of despair, a world dominated and ruled by the feared Reaper and his fellow companions of darkness. The merciless cycle begins as formerly innocent citizens of the sleepy town of Dandridge claw themselves from their graves preying upon loved ones, upon neighbors and friends. As their ravenous craving for living flesh is sated, their former companions join the legion of the dead spreading more woe and suffering. At the centre of this bizarre tale are the few remaining citizens of an ever deteriorating world. Will these woebegone individuals be able to assuage their fear and grief as the tide of destruction consumes their lives and engulfs everything they ever believed in? Will they be able to defeat the powerful and ultimately evil Deathbringer and his necromantic schemes or will they soon be added to his growing legion of the dead? Will they forever be his blood thirsty minions prowling throughout their bleak existences satisfying their all consuming hunger and bitterness upon a world they once cherished or will they be able to end this reign of terror? Can the necropolis that has been created be ended and the world returned to its former orderliness or have the events that have transpired on this fateful night destroyed everything forever? Where will the destruction begun by one so vile, so long removed from any semblance of humanity, end? Shall darkness forever rule this world? The terrifying epic of a world gone awry has begun. . .

I was impressed by all aspects of this novel but was particularly enthralled by one such aspect to the point of being deeply drawn into the story. Instead of reading due to a general feeling of curiosity, I was drawn into the earth shattering events begun in Dandridge, and soon to spread worldwide by the characters' perceptions of the deterioration of all they ever held dear. As the merciless dead began to rise from their graves imbued with an abnormal strength never experienced in life added to an all-consuming desire to prey upon the living, they begin to torture and devour those they once loved in many graphic sequences. As the few remaining citizens of Dandridge namely Mike, Erin, Avery, and Melinda begin to discover the dire events that have mysteriously transpired on this seemingly innocuous night they are subjected to encountering the decayed parody of people they once loved returning from deep beneath their graves to consume those hapless individuals roaming the night, unaware of the circumstances that have re-animated the dead. Unlike many novels concentrated on zombies and their gruesome acts of gratuitous violence, the full horror of the situation and the strong emotional reactions of the people trapped within this hapless town was portrayed in a realistic fashion thus transforming what appears to be a fun novel of little substance into a disturbing realistic nightmare of shattering emotions and graphic gore completely enshrouded by an impenetrable aura of sadness. This having been stated, this novel is obviously not for the weak of heart and might prove so disturbing as to eliminate any enjoyment for those who are deeply effected by such raw emotions and so many vividly described dark concepts.

The characterization was expertly implemented allowing me to fully understand and appreciate each character. The raw pain of certain characters was so palpable as to prove contagious and the extreme evil and vileness of other characters, namely Melinda, was so well executed as to cause me to dream of vengeance. However, despite the extremely evil aspects inherent in some characters, the author was able to cause me to feel sympathy and sorrow for those I had previously abhorred by adding a simple statement or an overtly painful death. Even the zombies were fully characterized and I appreciated the unique twist on the zombie theme by allowing the living dead to retain their memories and desires from their previous life thus causing them to feel sorrow and loathing for their actions while still being unable to resist their ceaseless hunger which impels them to enact the vilest of deeds.

The conclusion of this novel was slightly confusing but still proved to be most satisfactory. I was unable to deduce any of the ending sequences until they transpired and was shocked by the poignant heartbreak and ceaseless sadness showcased throughout this novel.

The writing style employed throughout this melancholy work was exceedingly well executed and effortlessly conveyed the atmosphere of infinite sadness through the use of numerous evocative words and vivid metaphors. As many have already noted, the writing style is not relaxed, rather it is extremely erudite thus revealing the morbid atmosphere of the novel through weighty phrases and melancholy musings enshrouding the entirety of the story in a heavy pall of sorrow.

The doom laden atmosphere, bilious concepts, detailed sequences of death and torture, and general disturbing aura inherent in this novel cause me to advocate caution when approaching this story. This is not a fun zombie novel fraught with ludicrous sequences that often prove more amusing than horrifying, rather, the realistic portrayal and accurate descriptions of the characters' conflicting emotions might prove too heavy for the general reader. If you feel confidant that this novel will not prove too disturbing, its phenomenal plot, memorable characters, - - -both living and undead - - -, and fast pace will prove most entertaining and although I hesitate to label this novel as enjoyable, it never failed to maintain my interest and has caused me to develop an interest in the further works of this author.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2006-08-21

I just finished reading this book, and I enjoyed it. It wasn't great, but it was still a good read, especially if you like zombie fiction. My actual rating would be three and a half stars, but Amazon doesn't let you give half stars, and I didn't think it quite earned four stars. Some other reviewers have mentioned the abundance of metaphors, and they do have a point, it was a bit distracting at the beginning of the story, but he lightens up on them by the end.

I also enjoyed the character of Melinda, she's one of those characters you just love to hate. I would like to see a sequel so that we could find out what happened with the Erin character.

          Book Description

Abigail Timberlake Washburn would rather be anywhere else on a muggy Charleston summer evening -- even putting in extra hours at her antiques shop -- than at a séance. But her best friend, "Calamity Jane," thinks a spirit -- or "Apparition American," as ectoplasmically-correct Abby puts it -- lurks in the eighteenth-century Georgian mansion, complete with priceless, seventeenth-century Portuguese kitchen tiles, that C.J. just bought as a fixer-upper. Luckily, Abby's mama located a psychic in the yellow pages -- a certain Madame Woo-Woo -- and, together with a motley group of feisty retirees known as the "Heavenly Hustlers," they all get down to give an unwanted spook the heave-ho. But, for all her extrasensory abilities, the Madame didn't foresee that she, herself, would be forced over to the other side prematurely. Suddenly Abby fears there's more than a specter haunting C.J. And they'd better exorcise a flesh-and-blood killer fast before the recently departed Woo-Woo gets company.

4 out of 5 stars Apparition Americans vs. Madame Woo-Woo.......2005-08-29

After Abigail Timberlake Washburn, the heroine of this series moves to Charleston most of her friends from Charlotte follow suit which gives the series a happy sense of continuity. The most recent move is made by CJ who buys an old fixer upper home and goes to work for Abby in her antique shop. Everything seems to be falling into place until CJ discovers that her new home is haunted. So haunted in fact that her construction crews keep quitting. Strangely though, CJ keeps coming home to find that part of the remodeling has been completed and she just assumes that it must be the ghost doing the work. Despite the helpful nature of the spirit however, CJ wants the ghost out of her house and begins to look for a ghost buster. Abby's mother comes to the rescue and finds a psychic in the yellow pages who even offers a money back guarantee and a séance is soon in the works.

When the big moment finally arrives, Abby and Madame Woo-Woo the psychic get into an argument and soon Madame Woo-Woo hits the floor like a sack of wet cement and dies. At first it looks like a heart attack but pretty soon the police reveal that poison was the culprit and Abby once more starts to snoop and the fun begins.

Mrs. Myers has created a wonderful set of regular characters for this series and has once again in this book thought up some superb temporary characters. There is a real estate agent that lives in a flying saucer, a used car salesman who deals in automobiles in which celebrities have died and a former Miss Regional Okra. Mix these characters with the Deep South atmosphere and add a very odd mystery and one gets a very enjoyable book. Just to make things all the more interesting a very old corpse is found in one of CJ's walls and Abby soon puts that puzzle together also. CJ's ghost might still be there but at least now she knows who the ghost is. I know that having that knowledge would make me feel better. On second thought, maybe I wouldn't feel better after all.

As this series progresses Abby is getting better and better at solving these mysteries. In the first books she bumbled around until the guilty party completely startles her by confessing. In this case Abby figures out who killed Madame Woo-Woo and after confronting the killer almost joins the psychic on the other side. Even better than the mystery however are the adventures of Abby's mother who has tried and failed to become a Nun, dresses like June Cleaver and has spent time in a nudist colony. In this episode she has taken up with a Charleston club known as the Heavenly Hustlers whose members are up to their necks in this mystery.

Once again Mrs. Myers has delivered a splendidly funny and enjoyable warm fuzzy mystery. I was afraid that the change of setting from Charlotte to Charleston would cause a drop in the quality of the stories but that hasn't happened. Its not always the mystery that will keep your attention but the side fluff in this instance is a blessing, not a curse.

4 out of 5 stars A great way to get back into mysteries.......2005-05-23

This novel gave me a great way (and excuse!) to get back into cozy mysteries. Since The Cat Who... books have become basically plotless, and other cozy authors have died or stopped putting out as many books, I had really given up on reading mysteries...then along came Tamar Myers and her great Den of Antiquity books!

I won't summarize the plot, as it has been done several times before, and in the amazon.com summary. However, I will say that it is inventive, and highly interesting. The way the author weaves the narrator's knowledge of antiques into the storyline is superb!

In addition, the author's knowledge of Charleston is extraordinary. Although it can become a little tiresome hearing about how great "the Holy City" is, I feel as though I've really come to understand Charleston geography (bothn topographically and socially) by reading these books. Besides all of this, they are simply a hoot! From the narrator's friend's preposterous Shelby stories (think of Rose from "the Golden Girls" and her tales of St. Olaf) to the narrator's mother (think of "I Love Lucy"), the humor is great.

Bottom Line: This series brought me back to the mystery genre, through its great plot, setting, and characters. I laughed out loud more often with this novel than I have in a long time. Whether you're looking for a way to get back into mysteries, a new series, or simply a read for the beach, this book is definitely worth it!

2 out of 5 stars Oh so formula!.......2004-06-08

Ms. Myers two series are so formula and so predictable, but I had enjoyed the Den of Antiquity series more than the Magadalena Yoder series, but there comes a time when it just gets to be too much. The humour begins to seem forced, the antics frenetic and disjointed, and the bad guys (or gals) more clownish and unrealistic. That is the case here. Abby is on the trail of another killer and it leads her into peril herself, but somehow she manages to get away without suffering many ill effects. And I haven't even mentioned the editing - that is is so poorly done in each of these books. This book is no different in any way than any of the others, but the ending seems more forced and rushed than usual, especially for the books in this series. It made no sense. That's it. I'm done with Ms. Myers books - this was the last straw.

4 out of 5 stars Recipe is the same, even for antiquity series.......2004-04-03

The author has developed a proven recipe to satisfy her readers: take a preposterous plot, mix in bizarre humor on every page, add an excellent atmosphere, and stir in a batch of fascinating characters. Then hope that the plot absurdities will be overlooked by the reader. And the flaws are overlooked, unless one looks beneath the surface.

For example: A body is discovered behind the wallboard of an 18th century Charleston house. When the wallboard is broken, a terrible stench fills the kitchen. It would appear that there are two problems with this set of circumstances. First of all, if the body has been there since the 1700s, it is highly unlikely that there would be a cloying, repugnant odor. Such an odor would have been detected long ago. The smell of a hundred pounds of decaying meat can penetrate almost anything. Moreover, would there really have been wallboard on such an old house? I'm no expert on Charleston house materials, but gypsum wallboard came much later. The walls should have been lath and plaster and hair, it would seem. If there was wallboard, that would indicate remodeling a century or more after the body was deposited there, and surely the remodeler would have noticed the body.

Perhaps a reader should not ponder such things, but I can't help it. Nonetheless, the book is fun to read. That should suffice, and it does.

4 out of 5 stars Got Ghosts? Call Madam Woo-Woo!.......2003-07-12

In the 8th book in the Abigail Timberlake mystery series involving an antique dealer who solves crimes, Abigail finds herself at a séance and is skeptical and sharp-tongued as always. It seems her friend, C.J., believes there are ghosts haunting her new mansion, and she hires a medium/psychic to get the ghosts out. Feeling pressured, Abby attends, but when Madam Woo-Woo dies from poison shortly after the séance, Abby must step in and help her friend prove her innocence in the murder investigation. When Abby stumbles on some authentic 17th Century tiles that are worth a fortune on the mansion's walls, she quickly moves to forget the murder and focus on antiques. The fortune hunt is called off, however, when during her search, Abby finds another body buried in the wall. Getting unwelcome help from a group called the Heavenly Hustlers (of which Abby's mother is a member), Abigail must find the murderer before she ends up as a ghost herself.

I have liked each of Tamar Myers' books in this series, and the other involving Magdelena Yoder. Her books are witty (although she reuses many of the same puns in several of the books throughout the series) and have me laughing aloud in many cases. This book was interesting and the mystery engaging. I would recommend reading this book if you enjoy cozy mysteries with a bit of humor.

The first book in this series is "Larceny and Old Lace". Enjoy!

                  Book Description

This second edition of the most complete parent guide available, features detailed and precise medical information about solid tumor childhood cancers, including neuroblastoma, Wilms tumor, liver tumors, soft tissue sarcomas, and bone sarcomas. In addition, it offers day-to-day practical advice on how to cope with procedures, hospitalization, family and friends, school, social and financial issues, communication, feelings, and, if therapy is not successful, the difficult issues of death and bereavement. Woven among the medical details and the practical advice are the voices of parents and children who have lived with cancer and its treatments. As many parents have already found, advice from "veteran" parents can be a lifeline. Obtaining a basic understanding of topics such as medical terminology, how drugs work, common side effects of chemotherapy, and how to work more effectively with medical personnel can only improve the quality of life for the whole family suffering along with their child. Having parents describe their own emotional ups and downs, how they coped, and how they molded their family life around hospitalizations can be a tremendous comfort. Just knowing that there are other kids on chemotherapy who refuse to eat anything but tacos or who have frequent rages can make one feel less alone. Parents who read this book will encounter medical facts simply explained, advice to ease their daily lives, and tools to be strong advocates for their child. It also contains a personal treatment summary and long-term follow-up guide for your child to keep as a permanent record.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a lifeline for a parent.......2004-11-30

I cannot overstate how helpful this book was to me. My daughter was diagnosed with Wilms (kidney) cancer 14 months ago. This book was given to me several days after her initial diagnosis and I turned to it many, many times over the long journey to recovery. Even today, with my daughter happily in remission, I turn to it for help in dealing with late side effects and the emotional consequences of the rollercoaster that is childhood cancer. Of all the books I have read over the past 14 months (and there have been many - I'm an avid reader), this one was absolutely the best. If I could, I would buy up all the copies and give it to every parent of a child with a solid tumor.

                  5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2003-05-22

I am a Pediatric Oncology Nurse that buys these books to give to the newly diagnosised families. All of them have told me that it is a wonderful tool.

5 out of 5 stars It explains all.......2001-10-20

This book was recommended to me after my daughter was diagnosed with nueroblastoma. It explains it all. The book is broken down by topic (ie radiation and chemotherepy) and also by tumor.
The language used was easy to understand. The book was my map through the world of childhood cancer.

5 out of 5 stars Best resource available about kids with cancer!.......2001-04-03

If you have found yourself catapulted into the nightmare of having a child with cancer, this book will help you to understand much of the journey to come. No matter what stage your child is in treatment...beginning, middle, finished treatment, relapsed, or palliative...this book is an indispensible resource. Personal stories peppered throughout the book help you come to realize that you are not alone in this battle. This book also has a wonderful list of resources to help families through this hard time. Buy one for yourself, family members (especially in-laws!), your child's pediatrician, your child's teacher, and your closest friends so they can have a glimpse into what you and your child are facing and can help you along the way. This book should be given to EVERY parent when they hear those horrible words, "Your child has cancer..."
