Book Description
The debut of Marshal Salvatore Guarnaccia of the Carabinieri, a Sicilian, stationed in Florence.
It is just before Christmas and the marshal wants to go South to spend the holiday with his wife and family, but first he must recover from the flu (which has left the Florentine caribinieri short-handed) and also solve a murder. A seemingly respectable retired Englishman, living in a flat on the Via Maggio near the Santa Trinita bridge, was shot in the back during the night. He was well-connected and Scotland Yard has despatched two officers to "assist" the Italians in solving the crime. But it is the marshal, a quiet observer, not an intellectual, who manages to figure out what happened, and why.
In addition to the wonderful atmosphere of Florence, Magdalen Nabb has created a delightful investigator who has been described as "the most Maigret-like of contemporary policemen" by the Times Literary Supplement.

Italian flavor? Not much........2007-04-30
Having really enjoyed Camilleri's Montalbano books, I was hopeful about this, especially after seeing such good reviews. I was greatly disappointed. The mystery itself was all right, although the red herrings were rather expected, but it was the feel of the story which was the greatest disappointment. Rather than having an Italian, much less Florentine, flavor permeate the story, I felt as if the author visited for local color and presented details without substance. Marshall Guarnaccia was barely in the story much of the time, and I got no feel for his personality or quirks. It was the English characters who had the most life, and that wasn't what I was looking for.The Terra-Cotta Dog: An Inspector Montalbano Mystery
For all the future reviwers- Pease do not spoil the mystery.......2004-04-14
I was going to read this book which looked nicely recomended but thanks to the kindly meant but unfortunately revealing review of Maiko Shimoi from Osaka, Japan I will not be reading this book.
Any one else who is planning to read the book please do not read Maiko's review...
Forza Firenze.......2002-05-09
The re-release of Magdalene Nabb's Florentine stories is long overdue ( and shame on her UK publisher for dropping her ).
Congratulations are due to SoHo Press for their continuing ressucitation of some of the finest crime writers ( Van Der Wetterring , Tokagi and Janes etc )who all seem to have been dropped in favour of half-witted serial killer clones.
These are some of the finest crime stories ever written and their evocation of Florence is flawless.Marshal Guarnaccia is one of the most engaging protagonists since Maigret and the stories have a similar emphasis on the observation of character and cause rather than Chritie-esque puzzles. In many ways the mystery seems secondary to Ms. Nabb's exceptional ability to draw the reader into the lives of her characters and the bustle of Florentine daily life.
Buy three copies, one to read and re-read to destruction , one to keep for the time when your first falls to bits and one to give to your best friend.

A miss in mystery.......2005-02-17
This is my first book I read written by Mary Jane Clark and might be my last. Although the concept of the plot is good the story seems underdeveloped. The story jumps around a lot with all the different characters telling the story. The characters were flat and didn't seem to have any life in them. Romance suddenly springs up in the middle of the book for no apparent reason between two of the characters. I was in no hurry to finish reading this book to find out who did the crimes. This is a mediocre book at best. I urge readers to read Mary Higgins Clark for page turning mysteries that will keep you at the edge of your seat.
One Star.......2002-08-31
Do You Promise Not to Tell? Nope. This is one of the choppiest books I have ever read. I could not figure out the characters; they were never developed. Just as I started to see depth in a character, the chapter would end and the next would be about some other character; it was frustrating. I feel confident in telling readers this isn't worth taking the time to read.
Mary Jane's Second Outing -- Much Better !!.......2002-04-19
In her first novel, Mary Jane Clark gave us a fine plot with plenty of suspense til right near the end, some characters to like (albeit the leading lady was a bit "squeaky clean"), and a different venue from most mysteries -- the busy newsroom of a major broadcast studio. Our gripe was that there was too much clutter, from almost unnecessary sub-plots to discussions about diseases and so on, that distracted from our story. Yet, we wanted to move to this book (her second novel) and see if we might find some improvement.
Indeed, the elements we liked are back: an excellent plot, with another late reasonably surprising "whodunit" at the end; the broadcast news venue; and characters we could relate to -- not so squeaky clean this time! Our leading lady, Farrell Slater, whose producing job is on the line throughout (actually, "given notice" by her boss, Range Bullock, whose minor role was reprised from book 1) discovers a probable art fraud of a six-million-dollars-at-auction Faberge Egg leftover from Imperialist Russia. So in addition to a couple of attacks and murders to solve, the true whereabouts and story of the egg form an entertaining tale throughout.
I think Mary Jane is on to something; to us, this is clearly a better effort than her first, although maybe not quite the "Stunner!" claimed by none other than [the real] Dan Rather on the dust jacket. The distractions are gone except for one remaining peeve -- our 260 pages of story are divided into 139 chapters. Maybe our author, a TV Newswoman in real life, just can't get away from a sound byte mentality. Keep the good stuff, give us a little more time per scene, and we'll be looking for five stars in her ensuing work. Good reading!
139 Chapters in 297 Pages.......2000-09-10
Although the story was good enough to keep me reading to find out what happened, the author's style seems more appropriate for news writing (her "other" job) than for novel writing. Fifteen-second news stories work better than 15-line chapters -- at least for this reader, who's not part of a Sesame Street generation.
A great whodunit.......2000-09-06
Mary Jane Clark has the gift to bring her characters to life. This is a story of a TV producer, Farrell Slater who is on her last leg of her career. Either she gets the story of a lifetime or she'll be at the unemployment line. She is sent on assignment to an auction house that is selling the famous Faberge egg "The Moon Egg'. The egg sells for a record 6 million dollars. Farrell soon discovers that the egg is a fake and she knows who has the real one. Soon people who are aware of this egg are dying. This could be the story Farrell needs to get her career back or it could be the story to end her life. I had fun trying to figure out who the "bad guy" was. Read this book and have fun with it.

The centerpiece of von Balthasar's theology.......2001-04-02
This volume, volume III of "Theo-Drama", provides the centerpiece of the theological thought of the late Hans Urs von Balthasar. In its pages, he presents, using his concept of a "theological dramatic theory", his ecclesiology, his Christology, and his Mariology, all of which are intrinsically interconnected.
In a review of this sort, it is impossible to fully express the range of what this book covers (much less the totality of von Balthasar's thought). However, as a bit of a 'teaser', (to encourage the review reader toward the purchase of this book), I'll point out a couple of areas which were of great interest to me.
One area of interest was in von Balthasar's discussion of Christology. Unlike many systematicians who all too often assume that students of systematics already know history (a dangerous assumption, at best), von Balthasar locates his theological discussion of Christology from within the historical controversies of the 4th and 5th centuries.
Another area of interest was in his discussion of ecclesiology. In expounding his theology of "Church", von Balthasar develops his "Christological Constellation" (further expounded in "The Office of Peter and the Structure of the Church") based on the New Testament witness of Peter, James, John, Paul and Mary.
A third area of interest was in his discussion of Mariology, which he locates (following Vatican II) in his discussion of the Church. His presentation of Mary is at once theological and pious, without being overbearing. Of special interest in the Mariological section is his discussion of the role of woman vis a vis the role of man in the Divine Plan.
If you only read one volume of von Balthasar's theology, this would probably be the one to read. I heartily recommend this book.

Dramatic Freedom: Human and Divine.......2006-06-08
In the second volume of his magisterial Theo-Drama, Hans Urs von Balthasar gets down to business laying out his theo-dramatic theory and how to understand theology as theo-drama. He begins in this volume by clarifying the nature of theo-drama and how the history of salvation can rightly be understood as theo-drama. Issues actors, audience, author and particiaption in the drama are all discussed here. Von Balthasar has a fluid conception of the world stage on which God and man interact in the scope of the theo-drama in which the dramatis personae are at times actors, at other times audience (which is still involved in the drama). God himself is, of course the author and the director of the play. This however, does not prevent God from appearing onstage in Christ as the central actor of the theo-drama. Indeed for von Balthasar, the theo-drama can also be called 'christo-drama' because it is only through the mission of Christ that the world drama is transformed into 'theo'-drama.
In this light, then von Balthasar begins to discuss the characters in the theo-drama, focusing first on man and God and their interaction. This is one of the most central sections of the entire theo-drama, where von Balthasar hammers out his account of the relationship between divine and human freedom. This is central to his whole theo-dramatic project because the notion of drama inherently involves the interplay of different dramatis peronae whose 'freedoms' interact and the possibility of conflict between those freedoms.
Von Balthsar develops an account of infinte freedom divine freedom and finite human freedom. He argues that finite freedom is fulfilled and finds its true being through participation in the infinte freedom of God. However, this finite freedom is truly freedom and therefore given space by God's infinite freedom to refuse it's proper role (of participating in God's freedom through union with Christ). Thus, von Balthasar truly establishes the basis for the theo-dramatic action in the interplay between finite and infinte freedom where God's action is given unqaulified primacy and emphasis, yet making space for humanity's creaturely freedom which responds to divine freedom and finds its destiny through participation in it.
There is much other discussion of the nature of the theo-drama, particularly the concept of the 'role' and 'mission' which lays the ground work for von Balthsar's third volume, which continues to discuss the different dramatis personae and is centrally christological.
I highly recommend von Balthasar's Theo-Drama, which I think is one of the most critical works of systematic theology from the 20th century. This volume has a central place in the series, establishing the foundation of the theo-drama in the dramatic interplay between finite and infinte freedom. This account grounds von Balthasar's christology and his trinitarian account of divine action and is therefore very important to understanding his whole project.

Customer Reviews:
5 Stars for the last review.......2004-01-20
That last review said it all. I agree with everything. Needs a little conversion to 3.5 but that's no biggie. Great artwork, original characters, nice format, excellent product.
Buy it.
An excellent, often overlooked game aid.......2004-01-17
I recently received the Red Star compilation as a gift, so imagine my surprise upon learning that the same team of artists had also published a D20 supplement. Quality tends to follow quality, so I picked this up for my own game as well.
Dramatis Personae provides profiles and full background on 24 primary characters from levels 4 to 11. These NPCs run the gamut from brave warriors to evil monks to wizards and criminals. The character concepts are distinct and fresh for the most part; some are downright unusual, although there are one or two clichés as well (not necessarily a bad thing in D&D).
Essentially, whenever you need a quick and interesting villain or ally, this book allows you to take any of the characters within and plunk them down anywhere in your campaign as needed with little to no work on your part. Full statblocks are provided for each character, along with a detailed description, background, and combat preferences. For the most part the NPCs are all of moderate to major importance and ability- no bartenders here.
Following the character section there is also a healthy selection of new magical items as well as a handful of new feats and spells. Most of these are tied to the NPCs themselves.
As a GM aid this book could prove indispensable in a pinch or as a resource for new ideas. For players it might be somewhat less useful, but it could still provide hooks for a memorable character.
Now let's get to the artwork. It is unfortunate that the entire book wasn't done in color, because the cover is truly stunning. The interior pages are black and white with gray shading, but even so, the character pictures (which are done by some very respected comic book artists) are on par or better than the artwork in any other D20 material out there.
I'd also like to make note of the fact that this is just about the most error-free D20 product I have ever seen. The errata, which can be found at the Archangel Studios website, lists a mere handful of typos.
Dramatis Personae uses the D&D 3.0 rules, but if you're the GM, then your players don't have to know that. However if you really are that anal, then the changes to 3.5 are minor.
Overall, I was extremely pleased with this purchase, especially considering its modest price. I would recommend Dramatis Personae to any GM who was seeking to spice up his or her campaign, or to anyone who simply wanted a useful, high-quality D20 supplement that can take a place of pride in any collection.
And yes, the cheesecake fairy on the cover is also in the book. No, you don't want to mess with her.

Gorgeous........2006-05-18
Jeannelle M. Ferreira, Dramatis Personae (Prime, 2005)
"Wow" is perhaps the only thing I can say about this story with any real certainty. Ferreira has come out of her corner swinging, and the burgeoning mythpunk movement has found another wonderfully articulate person to carry its banner.
The story revolves around two mask-makers commissioned to make, perhaps, the ultimate mask. It's a good story, and one that will keep you interested until the end. Ferreira draws her characters exquisitely, and the way she plays with the idea of the mask as we know it in today's society has already been commented on by, well, everyone who has read this. All of these things will make you like the book. What will make you love it is Ferreira's gift for language. She finds the perfect word, and then uses it, every time. Her sentences lack the rococo touches of a Catherynne Valente or a Wendy Walker; it is possible this will make it appeal to you even more (after all, it's easier reading). Don't let the lack of floweriness fool you, though, the writing is still just as sterling as that to be found in Valente or Walker.
Ferreira is one of the rising cadre of authors with whom you should all familiarize yourselves; if they ever receive the popular support their acclaim would dictate, they will one day rule the planet. ****
The fine art of making mask-makers.......2005-06-10
In something under forty pages, Jeannelle M. Ferreira covers more ground of gender, identity, memory, and ambiguity than most writers do in a novel. Ignore the cover inexplicably provided here; you will get John William Waterhouse with the real thing. "Dramatis Personae" is not to be missed.
Julian and Isley are mask-makers, wearers of masks, whose establishment and creations ring unexpected changes on all the "mysterious little [whatever]shop" clichés; but from name to age to personal history, nothing about either character is as straightforward as a first glance suggests. Or, for that matter, as Julian and Isley themselves may think. Before identities and relationships can be properly sorted out, however, the sudden arrival of a customer "for whom, bleeding hell, there can be no mask" not only overturns the mask-makers' daily lives, but may change them entirely. As the author herself posits in the afterword, "And what if you had gone on so long that your memory held more than twenty lifetimes' worth of faces, and you could show us any one of them at all, or none?" This is the question that Julian, Isley, and their mysterious visitor must all figure out, and its answer is not a simple one.
Ferreira's language is spare and rich at the same time, drawing out details that imply all of the world behind the words, and her characterization is equally three-dimensional. A chapbook seems far too short a time to spend with Julian's astronomy and obstinate craftsmanship, or Isley's borscht and elaborate endearments, and all the complexities of face and self that Ferreira keeps in the air until the last page and maybe beyond. At least we have this much of their story -- a rare, poetic novella in all respects.

This book will be helpful for travelers, but could also be helpful for retirees, business travelers and cruise ship passengers. Travel tips throughout explain why you should not drink the local water or how you can avoid illness by peeling raw fruits and vegetables yourself.
Mexico Health and Safety Travel Guide is an essential guide you will want to take with you when traveling in Mexico, especially if you travel there often or stay for over a week.

Great resource for Mexico travel.......2005-08-14
This is a very thorough, well-researched guide to Mexico-specific travel. I frequently travel to Baja California with church missions teams, and knowing how to get to the best hospitals and clinics (not to mention being able to identify the good v. bad ones) is a tremendous resource. Also serves as a medical field guide, should there be an absence of clinics in your immediate area (or if you need to act before emergency services would arrive...which you would have called in the numbers found through this book!). Very helpful resource.

Muchos Gracias Dos Gringos.......2004-05-13
Finally, an authoritative response for anyone who has suffered Montezuma's Revenge+ by two highly-respected medical doctors who have probably treated more of it than most.Dr.'s Page have undertaken an English language medical tour for those of us who have encountered the nightmare of too many tacos and other ills South of the Border. In what normally can be a maze of medical horrors for us gringos on vacation, they have investigated and simplified with easy instructions and directions good, safe medical help. This book is as necessary as packing your toothbrush for a trip. I would hope they eventually get to do a book for other countries for us Americanos.
