Adrianne Byrd once again gives us a thrilling mystery/romance in "Deadly Double", with a great plot of the good twin/bad twin scenario. With this intriguing plot she is able to touch on many social issues, identity theft, mental disorders and of course let's not forget the interracial dating. Will is caught up in saving his long lost love and trying to get Josie to trust him as she attempts to take her life back from her sister, Michelle. Not only are we swept in the thrilling ride of a mystery and suspense, but we are also witness to romantic flashbacks, as well as, hot and steamy new love scenes between the hero and heroine. I was hooked from the first page of this action-packed thriller and did not dare put it down until I was finished. And at the very end even I wasn't sure everything was as it should be...talk about THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO HMMMMMM! You will not be disappointed!

I this book starts with a kidnapping and murder,that caught you up.You feel like your watching that lifetime movie of the week .You know the players and you can almost follow where the story leads you.pick up the popcorn and settle in for the story.I found the book an enjoyable read.perfect for that summer afternoon.

After reading more than 20 mob books, I have found this book to be the most exciting. This book gives the reader an inside look at that inner workings of Brooklyn's Columbo Family and its intriguing boss, Joe Columbo. The reader finds how this man evaded taxes and kept in power for as long as he did, and it also describes loansharking in vivid details. Mr. Cantalupo's memory and survival is a blessing for mafia readers. Organized crime in Brooklyn is stupendously covered with this book. Only one regret about this book and that is it lacks detail on the Gallo-Profaci war. The only other book that holds a candle to this is "Blood Oath" by George Fresolone. I highly recommend this title.
Wanna-be gangster wants to tell his story........1999-08-21
This is a typical example of a wanna-be gangster who testifies against his friends and associates and then goes out looking to sell his story to the highest bidder. The problem is, there is no story. He idolizes his alleged "gangster" mentor for the first few chapters and then, once he's gone, he systematically turns informant on all his associates to eradicate his gambling debts. Thank God they didn't try to make this into a movie.
Good start to the book but fizzles out quickly........1999-03-25
I'm always excited to read different stories about families you don't normally hear much about. There are a myriad of books about Gotti and Capone but this book gave an inside look into the Colombo family from a FRIEND, not a made guy. So the first few chapters are interesting, providing anecdotal info. on Colombo, Gallo, etc., then this "insider" turns stoolie because of his gambling debts. The majority of the book then describes him trying to rat out his friends. The reader is hard-pressed to feel sympathy for this self-serving individual. This book never delivers that "inside" edge because Cantalupo was never involved in anything more important than numbers running. Don't waste your time, especially if you have to search for the book.

Murder Strikes Close to Home in this Charming Cozy.......2007-03-24
In "Murder Checks Inn", North Carolina innkeeper Alex Winston is trying to stay afloat financially while re-building his historic Cape Hatteras lighthouse turned bed-and-breakfast. Alex finds himself hosting a cantankerous group of guests, including a mother and her two adult children who have come to Elkton Falls for the reading of the will of their eccentric ex-husband and father Matthias Trask. But the will reading never happens, because Trask's will turns up missing from the law office of Alex's Uncle Jase Winston, and Uncle Jase is found bludgeoned to death with a paperweight. Amateur sleuth Alex tries to find his uncle's killer in this charming cozy. In Alex's mind, no one is above suspicion in this murder, not even his own brother Tony. Alex also tries to sort out his romantic feelings towards his lovely housekeeper Elise, who seems to reciprocate his feelings as well.
Author Myers has done a great job of creating a wonderful inn located in a lighthouse located at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Reading these books makes me ready to check into this homey inn and enjoy a cozy stay. Cozy readers will enjoy this book, whether they are familiar with this series or not.
Who killed Alex's uncle and why.......2003-07-29
Hatteras West Inn and Lighthouse is always a surprise to visitors. You usually don't see a lighthouse in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Alex Winston, Innkeeper, loves this place. His father had it built because his mother loved Cape Hatteras.
The Trask family checks in. Cynthia, her daughter Ashley and her son Steven are only here because it is the only way to hear Mr. Trask's will. But, Mr. Trask's lawyer, and Alex's uncle, Jase Winston is murdered and the will stolen before it could be read.
Alex calls his brother Tony. Tony comes to stay at the Inn for the memorial service. Alex and Tony don't get along too well.
In the midst of everything, Elise Danton's fiance moves to turn. Elise is the housekeeper at the Inn. Alex is very interested in Elise, but doesn't want to interfere since she's engaged.
As Alex starts looking into his uncle's murder, he begins to question everyone. Could one of the Trask family killed Jase. Who else had a motive to kill Jase? Alex discovers a lot of information and has to sift through everything to find the killer. In the meantime, many things start happening and Alex knows he's getting close.
This is a very enjoyable series. I love lighthouses and like the idea of a lighthouse inn near the mountains. The scenery is very inviting. I would love to stay at this Inn.
Alex is a wonderful character. Very likeable. He enjoys his work, but the downfalls are shown as well as the good times. Elise is somewhat of a mystery. She's described well enough, but to add to the story, Alex doesn't fully understand her. I think there is a lot there to be discovered in future books.
I love all the characters in the local town. They are very realistic.
I highly recommend this book and the whole series.
A Quintessential Cozy.......2003-01-27
Alex Winston is a nice, accommodating kind of guy who owns and operates Hatteras West, an inn centered around a colorful lighthouse located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, far from its Atlantic Coast namesake. What with demanding guests, financial difficulties, woman problems and a gathering of the Trask clan to read their father's last will and testament, Alex has his hands full.
His load becomes even heavier when his uncle, the Trask family lawyer who has been like a father to Alex, is found murdered in his law office. Who could have possibly wanted to bash in the head of the genial old eccentric? Tim's brother Tony, who was about to be written out of the uncle's will? Julie, a surprise Trask heir from the wrong side of the blanket? Perhaps the lawyer's secretary Nadine, the only one who can decipher the old man's handwriting. Or Vernum, the shy and shaggy gardener who hides from Tim's guests.
Tim Myers' Lighthouse mysteries are the coziest of the cozy, and Murder Checks Inn, the third in the series, is no exception. By now, the lighthouse setting has become familiar to readers, and no longer offers the surprises of book one, Innkeeping with Murder. Instead, Myers maintains interest by peppering the pages with suspicious characters, each with a more compelling motive than the last.
Cozy mystery readers are a forgiving breed. If the characters become a trifle homogenized and the solution a wee bit formulaeic, we don't care. Alex Winston is just such a gol-darned nice guy, and we really care about what happens to him and his charming inn. By the end of the story, Alex' life is heading in a satisfying direction and we look forward to what future books in the series have in store.
strong amateur sleuth.......2003-01-18
It's not many people who live and work at a place that means everything to them but Alex Winston is one of the chosen few. He works and lives in a lighthouse motel, the Hatteras West Inn and Lighthouse located in the small town of Elkton Falls, North Carolina. The guests he serves always entertain him and he currently looks forward to the Trask family reunion. However, when they check in, he realizes they are not on vacation but are there for the reading of a will.
Alex's Uncle Jase is to read the will to the grieving family, the wife Cynthia, the daughter Ashley and the brother Steven but he is murdered before he can. The only item missing from his office is the will and that makes the Trask family members prime subjects. A previous unknown but acknowledged daughter also is one of the beneficiaries of the will and she too is considered a suspect. There is one more questionable person that must be considered. Alex's brother Tony desperately needed the money that Jase left him in his will. Alex is determined to find out who is uncle's killer is even it means risking his own life.
MURDER CHECKS INN is so colorful that readers would like to take a vacation at the lighthouse motel depicted in the novel. The scenery is picturesque while the story line is fast light and entertaining. The support cast adds an extra touch of color to the tale. The protagonist is very likable and he knows all the suspects have viable motives, which makes him even more determined to find the real killer.

This book gives details to the inside thoughts of the character while being true to the game found on dreamcast and playstation 2...You can understand what the characters are thinking, and what their plans are.
Interesting Art... Poor Storytelling.......2003-05-04
Being a fan of comic book art, video games, and zombies, I figured this graphic novel would be a unique treat... but I have mixed feelings. The art in this book is very nice and interesting, especially in the action sequences. It remains faithful to the game, in that the characters randomly find weapons, ammunition, puzzle keys, and herbs... although this adds to the choppy storytelling. Overall, the story is bland and uninteresting, much of it being told through Claire's non-stop self exposition. If you're a huge fan of the game and comic book art, you will probably enjoy this graphic novel. But, if you are looking to be engaged in a great zombie story you should look elsewhere.

While this may be good for some, it is a prescription for disaster for others.......2007-04-07
While I admire Sear's work with the Zone diet and most of his other books, some people just don't do well on soy products. Just Google "Probems with Soy" to see some of the cautions and anecdotes that are out there.
While getting in The Zone is certainly a marvelous health advantage, doing so with soy protein it can be short-lived for many people. I don't know whether it is the hypothyroid qualities of soy, or the other hormonal effects, but it seems to screw up something in the body. I have spoken to women, even blood type A's, who after a few months of eating a lot of soy are having a continuous period - it never stops and may take a week or more to end once soy consumption is stopped. Talk about screwing up hormones.
It appears that people with blood type A can do okay with vegetarian diets (as long as they get enough protein from sources other than soy long term), but that for those with blood type O, a vegan diet is rarely if ever good for long term health. Blood type O's (the most common blood type), who think they are eating healthy by being vegan, can end up basket cases of poor health after a few months.
Getting plenty of iodine in the diet as the people in Japan do from kelp, fish, and other sea products, stimulates the thyroid so could mitigate some of the harmful effects of soy, so if this is done, actually eating like you are in Okinawa may certainly help.
Super Healthy diet book.......2006-08-16
This book may be the very best diet book on the market. It gives you healthy sources of protein, it teaches you to balance your macronutrients, protein, carbs, and healthy fats. It recommends only the healthiest foods to eat.It works!!!
I went from 209 pounds to 151 pounds with the principles of this book. Once you understand how insulin works against you to store fat,and learn the right amount of protein and carbs your body needs to maintain your ideal weight, you can begin your journey to eat in the zone and lose weight.It has been my eating guidelines for almost 10 years. It is well worth the trouble to learn to treat food as a drug.

This is a must have for EVERY vegetarian. Very helpful and important information on food & what it does to your body. If everyone ate this way America would be skinny, healthy and in-sync with nature. If you find yourself gaining weight on a vegetarian diet, this book is for you. Following the guidelines, you will find you do not miss what you no longer eat and that you can eat rich, flavorful and filling foods without the weight-gain. You will actually need to eat more to keep from getting too slim.
Dr Sears has distorted/lied about the Okinawa Diet.......2005-07-13
Dr Sears has distorted his description of the okinawa diet in his book.
It's true that they eat fish and soy, but they only eat 100-300g of fish per day, practically no meat. They eat soy, small to moderate amounts of fruit and heaps of vegetables - so far so good. But he forgets to mention that they eat between 7-13 serves of whole grain products such as rice and noodles, and large amounts of imo (sweet potato). Thus their diet is actually a wholefoods higher carb 55-80%, lower protein(10-20%), low fat (10-25%) diet !! This is obviously not a zone diet.
He left out the bit about the grains and sweet potato to fit his own philosophy, this is fundamentally dishonest.
If you wish to know more about the real Okinawa diet, read "The Okinawa Way" or "The Okinawa Diet" by Bradley Willcox (Md). Bradley Wilson has actually been to Okinawa personally. It is interesting to not that in the notes at the back of the book, Dr Wilcox distances himself from the zone and states categorically that the Okinawa diet is NOT the zone diet because it is C55% P20%F25%. I am sure that Bradley Wilcox is horrified that his research has been distorted by the dishonesty of Dr Sears.
Awful Diet .......2005-06-29
Two years ago I decided to get healthy and mostly became a vegan. I wasn't unhealthy, Just thought might as well start getting super healthy before it was too late. I thought this book was a gift from the gods as I wanted to be "low carb" and had been concerned about where to get my protein. Well, I felt okay at first but never entered the proverbial "zone." Within a couple months, fatigue, spaciness and dizziness, I also started gaining weight and then diagnosed with hypothyroidism. (TSH way high) Nothing in my life had changed but all the soy I was eating. And I think if it hadn't been fuzzing up my brain I'd have figured it out a lot sooner. I now refuse to eat soy and am getting better. I am angry that Sears wrote this book and that he never bothered to research the subject properly and tell readers that soy can be really bad for us. I see below that there's a new book out on the dangers of soy. Well, I'm getting it, will review it and if it tells it like it is I am definitely telling everyone I know.

Recipes call for the oddest things..........2006-12-27
I started reading the book and was very pumped up on starting the "soy zone". I was so happy to read about how Dr. Sears' Soy Zone recipes are easy and he even gives you a list of foods to stalk your pantry with. Well, then I got to the recipe portion of the book (CH. 5) and I'm taking it back. What the heck is Stevia extract powder or Agar Flakes? Not to mention the endless list of ingredients for each recipe. The first few chapters made it seem like the recipes would be easy and you could get by without spending a ton of money. Unfortunately, I am a student who works and I want to live a healthy lifestyle, but I think I'll just stick to a vegetarian version of South Beach Phase 2!!! Much more practical. Unless you have a ton of time on your hands and have no problem buying a million (okay so that's an exaggeration) different ingredients and are able to cook every single meal at home, then I don't see how this diet is realistic.

I'm quite amazed at how my hormonal levels have balanced out using his diet plans for chicken and fish.
I bought the Soy Zone to broaden my food recipes, but the recipes could be a lot better. I don't know anyone who wants to eat 8 ounces of tofu at dinner, or even at one sitting. I think someone on his team needs to do serious research and find better cooks. There's far better food out there which could be converted to the Soy Zone, but if you're a vegetarian, I do feel this is a good place to start.
I lost 35 lbs with this diet.......2005-11-30
Four years ago I lost 35 lbs on the Zone diet and I have kept it all off since then because this diet teaches you a new way of life, a new way to prepare food and truly understand what you are eating. I have been a vegetarian for almost 20 years and this book makes sense and offers healthy meals. I'm only ordering it again because my copy is so worn out. If you want a no nonsense way to lose weight and you can remain dedicated, then this diet WILL work for you, but it's mind set that is a large part of weight loss, you can't just think that buying this book and eating some of the food will make you lose weight.

Barry Sears' bestselling Zone diet books have helped millions of Americans get off high carb diets,lose weight, balance blood sugar and boost moods and energy levels. He has even dared to tell readers that "no cholesterol lowering diet study has ever decreased total mortality." Right on. But the regular Zone Diet was challenging for vegetarians, particularly vegans, so Sears came up with THE SOY ZONE, billed as "the healthiest Zone diet ever." Sadly most people who have gone on this high soy protein diet sooner or later sing the low carb blues. More than 70 years of studies link soy to thyroid damage, manifesting most often as hypothyroidism, a cause of weight gain, fatigue and brain fog -- ills people "enter the Zone"to avoid! In addition, soy contributes to many other health problems, including digestive distress, reproductive disorders, infertility, immune system breakdown and even -- health claims to the contrary -- heart disease and cancer. Soy is also widely acknowledged now as one of the top 8 allergens. Contrary to popular myth -- and soy industry marketing hype -- Asians use soy in the diet as a condiment, not a staple food. They not only eat much smaller quantities than found in "The Zone" but different types of soy food. In short, this is a dangerous diet in which possible benefits are far outweighed by proven risks.
much better book than Enter the Zone.......2004-05-20
If you are a vegan, vegetarian, or just a person looking to add more soy into your diet because of the health benefits you've heard about--oh yeah, and you're interested in the Zone way of eating--get this book. One more thing--bypass Sears' frist book "Enter the Zone." First of all, "Enter the Zone" is only offerred in hardback...uh, it's been out for amost 10 years now, so I think a paperback is warranted. Much of "Enter the Zone" is about how fabulous Barry Sears is and how his diet has worked for all these olympic level atheletes--great! But certainly not me. "The Soy Zone," on the other hand, includes all of the important information from "Enter the Zone," including how to calculate your lean body mass in order to figure out your protein needs, and once you've got that, you can figure out how many blocks of protein you need to consume--the basis of the Zone diet. "The Soy Zone" also goes into detail about how the Zone works by regulating insulin and glucagon levels, and everything else you'd need to know--without the self-aggrandizing. And it's in paperback! Wahoo! The recipes offer an easy way to add soy into your diet if you are not a vegetarian/vegan, and if you are a vegetarian/vegan, the recipes show you how to beef up (er, soy up) the amount of protein in your food.
