Old favorite. Bestselling author Nora Roberts grabs her readers from page one. Innocence, Mississippi, isn't innocent for long when a murderer strikes the sleepy town. Concert violinist Caroline Waverly has returned to her deceased grandparents home to escape high-pressured concert tours. She is soon caught up by the irresistible charm of Southerner Tucker Longstreet. The dark secrets of Innocence soon begin to surface and together Caroline and Tucker not only face a murderer but discover secrets from the past.
Book Description
In the small town of Innocence, Mississippi, days are long, nights are fragrant, and secrets are hard to keep. But when a brutal killer starts claiming the lives of the town's most attractive women, lifelong neighbors are forced to wonder if the culprit is a stranger lurking in the bayou...or someone right next door.
Burned out by a whirlwind career, world-famous concert violinist Caroline Waverly arrives in Innocence looking for a little peace and some time to think. She hopes that a stay at her late grandmother's house--the one with a covered porch just made for soft summer nights--will provide the tranquillity she needs. But Innocence has something else to offer Caroline: handsome, charming Tucker Longstreet.
Tucker is known for keeping his romances short and shallow. But one look at Caroline, and Tucker realizes that she is unlike any other woman he's met. The coolly reserved Caroline feels an unexpected thrill at his ardent advances. But when she discovers a third murder victim in the murky waters behind her home, her summer liaison threatens to become much more. Because there's just one small problem with her new romance: Tucker is the leading suspect in the killings.
Customer Reviews:
Good read.......2007-09-21
This is one of Nora Roberts' older books and I just ran onto it recently! It kept my interest from the first page. I loved all the characters of this southern town. For once I liked the hero and heroine of the story from the beginning. Sometimes one or the other of them is sort of a jerk and then redeemable by the books end. However, Tucker and Caroline are both likable throughout the book. Nora Roberts was able to add a lot of humor to the story even though there is a serial killer running amok. Nora is great at bringing into the story a pet or child and in this case both, to give the story humor and some nice touching moments. I loved Tucker's easy going manner and his story telling.
I did suspect who the killer was. I sort of wished it could have been someone else but guess that is what made it such an interesting story.
I have some favorites of Nora Roberts and think this one will rate right up there.
Don't pick up this book if you want to sleep tonight! .......2007-08-08
Warning! Warning! Don't pick up this book if you want to sleep tonight! And lock the door while you're reading. My hands are still shaking from the incredibly shocking I-really-didn't-guess-the-killer finale! The clues are all there about a monster carving up young women and throwing them into the swamp. In hindsight, the killer's identity is completely obvious. But I guarantee this one will keep you terrified and guessing from beginning to end. I totally fell in love with the hero, Tucker Longstreet, a smooth-talking, deceptively slow-moving, lazy Southern charmer. The heroine, Caroline, is a concert violinist, holed up in her grandmother's Mississippi home while she recovers from exhaustion. But her introduction to life in the deep South isn't exactly restful. Tucker nearly runs her down, then she discovers a dead, mutilated girl in her lake - a girl who publicly claimed Tucker knocked her up. All hell breaks loose in the town of Innocence. Tucker plays his good ol' boy impression well, until Caroline begins to suspect there's much more to him than meets the eye. This is one slow, sexy sizzle, with a crazed killer upping the emotional ante, and then some... Wow! Fantastic!
Excellent - well developed characters.......2007-05-12
I bought the audiobook of this book and thought it was excellent. The characters were extremely well written and I laughed out loud several times listening to the audio book. Highly recommended.
I didn't see it coming..........2006-06-24
I pride myself on being able to figure out the culprit in the first few chapters of a mystery. I was completely surprised as to who the murderer turned out to be in 'Carnal Innocence'. This was the first book I've ever read by Nora Roberts and after reading it I have to say that Nora Roberts is one of my new favorite authors. I just loved the smalltown Southern atmosphere that the book revolved around and the characters were so greatly developed that I actually miss them now that I've finished the novel.
NORA IS JUST WONDERFUL AND SO ARE HER BOOKS.......2006-06-13

Book Description
When an infamous mobster contracts Desiree to catch a killer, the overweight detective bites off more than even she can chew.
Praise for the Desiree Shapiro mysteries:
"Tired of glamorous private investigators so svelte they could be fashion models? Has author Selma Eichler got a heroine for you."-- Ft. Lauderdale Sun Sentinel
"Highly entertaining."-- Carolyn Hart
"Witty...warm-hearted...a heroine we can embrace."-- Joan Hess
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2001-05-15
I've read every one of the Desiree Shapiro mysteries, and while I loved them all, I felt this was the best. I truly could not put it down. I really enjoyed having her work with a man, and enjoyed their banter. Desiree is very entertaining, and remains fresh, as far as I'm concerned. Yes, she is neurotic and has no impulse control regarding food, but that is part of her charm. I'm now reading the last book in the series, and am looking forward to more. Keep them coming, Ms. Eichler!
I was champing at the bit to get S. Eichler's latest........2000-02-11
And huzzah, finally, it was in a nearby bookstore. I was somewhat disappointed with the latest entry, however. It seemed to me, she copied the ending from one of her earlier books. And please, Desiree, this is the 21st century. It's ok to ask a man out! (Her asking herself, "does he or does he not like me?" seems very juvenile and out of character.) The characters did not seem very well-written or deep (she needs to read some Dorothy Simpson). I hope S. Eichler does better in 2001, because I'll be waiting to read it, hoping for a better effort.
Product Description
Seattle, February 2076. The Marq ssan bring business as usual to a screeching halt all over the world, and Professor Kay Zeldin joins Robert Sedgewick, US Chief of Security Services, in his war against the invaders. Soon Kay is making rather than writing history. But as she goes head-to-head against the Marq ssan, the long-buried secrets of her past resurface, and her conflicts with Sedgewick and Security Services multiply. She faces terrifying choices. Her worldview, her very grip on reality, is turned inside out. Whose side is she really on? And how far will she go in serving that side?
Samuel R. Delany writes: "The coupling of real thoughtfulness and rip-roaring excitement is as rare in science fiction as in any other genre. But here, in
Alanya to Alanya, they're locked together in the most exciting-and certainly the most intelligent!-tale of alien invasion I've read in decades. Because it is believable, it's fascinating. And, in the years that have seen Margaret Thatcher go and Hillary Clinton and Condoleezza Rice arrive, Kay Zeldin is an extraordinarily effective portrait of a political hero." Samuel R. Delany, author of

Customer Reviews:
Worth sticking around for 5 books.......2007-07-28
Just to get this out of the way, the whining of the first reviewer aside, there isn't a lot of female-centered science fiction out there compared to all the male-centered SF. So it's a welcome change to find a book like this.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and loved the idea of an alien race that attempts to help us solve our problems by forcing us to communicate in a rational way. It's an intriguing thought experiment, but disturbing as well. Duchamp imagines a world full of crappy, creepy men and their even creepier female companions. And yet I don't find this vision in any way exaggerated or unrealistic. It's just a projection of the worst we have now.
The only problem I have with the book is that I kept expecting things to go wrong for the protagonist and other main characters. Everything they set out to do is done with a minimum of Things Going Wrong. While you don't want folks thwarted at every turn, I found myself disbelieving the great number of things that go right. I wasn't sure how I felt about that at the end.
Though this is just the first book in the series, I feel like it's a complete story on its own. I am interested to find out what happens next, and where Duchamp intends all of this to end up. She is right in showing us that the work of changing a society and a culture is lengthy. It's not all going to happen at once, and it's not all going to happen just because powerful aliens drop out of the sky. But at the end of the book, I felt confident Duchamp could paint a conceivable picture of it happening somehow, so I'll stick around for the next volumes.
Oh good! More one-sided gender politics........2006-07-14
Some of the major feminists think that men are just as harmed by the demands of the male sex-role as women are by the female. Ok. Lets say that they're overstating that, that men are only 75% as harmed as women, or maybe even only 50%. What are the chances that we're all getting anything approaching a balanced view, when 99%-plus of gender commentary is done by, for, and about women - and not much of that has anything good to say about men? Many women don't want to hear anything about what life is like for men, and especially don't want to hear anything about their own sexist attitudes. The more that women-centered gender material is put out to inform all of us, the more people think we don't need to know about men, because the MOUNTAIN of women's material must surely mean men have, comparatively, nothing to complain about. And that becomes part of the reason nobody has much to say about sexism that harms men. It's considered a small-scale anomaly, and it becomes politically incorrect to assert otherwise. If sexism harms men as much as women, then to fully document that would have the effect of making women's plight seem not so deplorable, by comparison. It would no longer be a woman's issue but, instead, a people's issue. That's why it amazes me to hear some feminists say, in effect, that it isn't just a woman's issue. Well, nobody pays much attention to that; it gets buried in the women-centered mountain.

A cheerful, easy to read book........1999-06-14
The coping strategies in this book are refreshing, and there are a lot of novel ideas that are truly helpful. Dr. Potter seems to know her stuff, and the book is informative as well as pleasant. I don't know that it will make you stop worrying forever, but trying the various strategies for dealing with worry and anxiety will be fun, and they certainly can't hurt. I would recommend this book for anyone who has a problem with excessive worrying, or even for the occasional worrier who needs a lift.
