Book Description
Alice Bullock is a young bride whose husband, a Union soldier in the Civil War, leaves her on his Iowa farm with his formidable mother. Equally talented at quilting and gossip, Alice fills her letters to her sister with accounts of her daily life, from the local quilting bees, to the rigors of farm life, to the customs and restraints of small-town America. No town is too small, however, to escape intrigue and treachery, and when Alice finds herself accused of murder, she must rely on support from unlikely sources. Rich in details of quilting, Civil War-era America, and the hardships and rewards of a womans life in the 19th century, this is Sandra Dallas at her best.

I was swept away by this glorious historical ficion!.......2007-09-22
Oh, how I enjoyed this historical fiction! I was taken in by this book the moment that I opened its cover. I love this author's writing style, and loved the setting of the Civil War era, in small-town Iowa. Very powerful and moving book, written as letters to a sister. Kept my attention quite well, and I found myself looking forward to bedtime so I could read this book. Has a lot of elements of a cozy mystery - no swearing or profanity, there is a murder but isn't graphic, there is good mystery, it is set in a small town. Only thing missing is the sleuth - the reader is the one who has to do the sleuthing!
Confessions of a war bride.......2006-02-18
I enjoyed this book. With each of Dallas's books, I'm amazed at her ability to create such lifelike characters in such diverse settings. Having the book written in the form of letters is a nice change, and allows the reader to really get understand the workings of the character's mind. I've passed this book around a circle of my friends, and all have enjoyed reading it.
An Honest and Wonderful Read!.......2005-02-17
I so enjoyed this book. It was my first of Dallas's books and I just couldn't wait to read more. It was such a satisfying and engrossing story. The historical background was facinating as I love to learn about the civil war. The main character, Alice, was so honest one couldn't help but love her. A story of integrity and friendship, love and tolerance. Very genuine and beautiful. I love the tender and ever-changing relationship between Alice and her mother-in-law. Although some may feel there are too many events in some of Dallas's books to make them believable I disagree. That is what makes them so entertaining and delightful. This book is one of my all time favorites, and I read a lot! A true love story of dedication and sacrifice. Wonderful--I will be sharing it with all my reading buddies.
If you like historical fiction, you've got to read this!.......2005-02-03
Once again, Dallas has done a great job fleshing out realistic and memorable characters, from naive, optimistic Alice to her bristly mother-in-law to uneducated, determined Annie, whose path crosses that of the Bullocks when the war devastates her home. The story pulls you in thoroughly, and won't let go until you've read to the end.
Mr.Steven's Book Review.......2004-12-10
Alice's Tulips by Sandra Dallas is a story of a young newlywed suddenly finding herself running her husband Charlie's farm with his not-so-agreeable mother when her husband joins the Union Army. The story is told in Alice's letters to her sister, telling her all the happenings in the small Iowa town she now lives in. Before each chapter, there is a quote from a quilting book, as the book is somewhat centered around Alice's quilts. Soon, two orphan girls wander into the lives of Alice and her mother-in-law Mother Bullock. Anne and Joybell help Alice cope with her loneliness and bring a little more excitement to the farm. Trouble begins brewing when Alice meets Mr.Samuel Smead, the brother of her friend's husband. They casually flirt, but Alice doesn't mean anything by it. After a time of flirting, Mr.Smead becomes more dangerous, and eventually rapes Alice. After a couple of days, Mr.Smead's dead body is found, and everyone in the town blames Alice. The only thing keeping her from being hanged is Mother Bullock's good reputation, and she has sworn Alice's innocence. After a couple more years pass, Mother Bullock passes away, claiming responsibility for Mr.Smead's death on her death bed. Now, Anne and Alice are left to run the farm, but the town is starting to accept Alice again. After the war has been over for many months, Charlie finally returns to Alice and they live happily ever after.
I think this book was made very interesting by the format of the letters from Alice to her sister. The book portrayed the conflict of the Civil War well, as it showed how the North hated the South and vice-versa. It showed the very normal situation of a young women left at home to run the farm by herself while her husband is away fighting in the war. Also, Alice is confronted with many different issues, such as rape and discrimination. Times have indeed changed as rape back then was common but never discussed in public. Sandra Dallas did an excellent job in taking the reader back to the late 1700s and showing the conflicts that many people, especially women, endured during the Civil War. I learned from this book how power and the quest for power greatly creates coflict and resolution, such as the Civil War.

Customer Reviews:
IT'S ANOTHER CHARLIE GREENE MYSTERY.......2006-01-22
If you ignore the horrible, misleading cover, you'll find a brand new Charlie Green mystery complete with all your favorite characters, Mitch Hilston, Libby the Brat and more! If you disregard the lack of any promotion on this book and Ms. Milhiser's 40 page rant about how hard it is to get published (which completely interrupts the story), you finally get to the good stuff, and yes, it gets good, frenetic, funny and just as much fun as her others. You do get totally confused with so many characters acting weird, appearing, disappearing and causing chaos, but she sorts it out in the end and explains ties it all up with no loose ends. The plot is your basic go to Northern California spa with Maggie, have murders, FBI, local cops, and other, may other different authorities invade while all Charlie's friends hide in the walls. Yes, that's what I said. In the walls.

Customer Reviews:
Where's the music?.......2007-02-24
I have to say I was really bummed out when I opened the book and didn't find all the music I was expecting. The theme is missing,Evacuating London and Lucy Meets Mr.Tumnus were cut in half, and the four songs at the end of the soundtrack took up 2/3 of the book. There just wasn't enough music from the movie to make it worth buying.
Three cheers for Narnia.......2006-02-28
If you loved the sweeping sountrack to the movie, check out this book - music by composer Harry Gregson-Williams, 8 songs altogether - for piano, guitar, and voice. Also, look for 'Music Inspired by The Chronicles of Narnia.'

Great Martial Arts fiction.......2006-07-01
If you have ever read a Louis Cha (Jin Yong) novel, then this is almost just like it. The action is so vivid, you'll think you're watching a movie. And you will enjoy the story of "Nameless" as he gains enlightenment through the adversities in his life. I wish there were more martial arts fiction out there like this.

Customer Reviews:
Poor translation.......2004-05-13
The translation to Storm Riders is terrible. Parts of the book are so bad; you think the translator never took an English class in his life. "Do people really talk like that?" The biggest annoyance of the book is the translator can't decide to use the English translation of the characters name or they're actual Chinese names (i.e. Cloud or Bu-Jing-Yun). And if you think it gets better as you progress through the series, you're wrong.

Another Note: The art is Awesome!
A fun and wild ride.......2002-10-03
Okay, I'll admit that I watched the movie before I read the comic book. However, even though "Storm Riders" is one of the most awesome movies I've ever seen, the book, of course, is better. I'm not a big fan of this style of art, but I quickly got used to it. It's definitely not the slick and commercialized sort of art that a lot of the big companies produce. It seems more esoteric, flowing, raw, and especially well suited to the sort of universe presented in "Storm Riders."
As a big fan of wuxia/kung fu fiction and movies, I instantly fell in love with the story and the characters. I'm not sure what someone who wasn't familiar with the style would think, but even if you aren't, check it out anyway. The characters are solid, the action is well-depicted, and I was left wishing all of the volumes were available right now in the U.S.
Definitely worth it!
Book Description
Saturday Nights With Daddy at the Opry is both the story of growing up with a backstage pass to the entertainment world in Nashville as well as a heartwarming tale of a beautiful father-daughter relationship.
From the time she was a baby, Les Leverett, who was the official photographer for the Grand Ole Opry took his daughter, Libby, with him each Saturday evening to witness country music's greatest entertainers. Sometimes Libby carried his equipment, sometimes she played with the other children of Opry performers, but she was always observing.
Now some 40 years later, Libby Leverett-Crew touchingly remembers those Saturday nights with Minnie Pearl, Tex Ritter, Grandpa Jones, Roy Acuff, Dolly Parton, Porter Waggoner, Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, along with a few astronauts, muppets, ballet dancers, actors and actresses, and with Andy Warhol and kd lang thrown in.
Saturday Nights with Daddy at the Opry is a celebration of music and family-incredibly well written from one lucky daughter's perspective. Includes more than 100 photographs by Les Leverett.
Customer Reviews:
Very dissappointing .......2005-04-01
This promises to be something of a backstage look at the Grand Ole Opry, instead it's a more of a personal memoir with comments about country stars the author has known. While she writes quite a bit about Minnie Pearl, Grandpa Jones, Tex Ritter (hence the foreward is written by Tom & John Ritter, shortly before John's death), Dolly Parton, Porter Wagoner, Bill Monroe, Loretta Lynn, and John Hartford, and a few others are pictured and briefly commented on (Marty Stuart, Stringbean, Ricky Skaggs, The Whites, etc.) there are scores of Opry stars that don't even merit a mention. And over 35 of the "over 100 photographs" in the book are exclusively of Leverett-Crew's family without a star in the picture! And that's not counting the hefty amount of pictures that are with stars that also picture family members. Too bad the author did not just make this a book a history of her father's career (Les Leverett, a famed country music photographer) instead of this effort.
Enhanced with more than a hundred photographs.......2004-07-06
Saturday Nights With Daddy at The Opry by artist, writer, and photographer Libby Leverett-Crew is the biographical story of country music photographer Les Leverett as told by his daughter. As a little girl, Libby's father would take her along with him on his job as the official photographer for the Grand Ole Opry -- a position he held for over 30 years. This is not only a tribute to her father but also to the people (ranging from Dolly Parton and Minnie Pearl to Roy Acuff and Bill Monroe) who touched the lives of her family and the powerful impact a loving father has on the formative life of his daughter. Enhanced with more than a hundred photographs from her father, Saturday Nights With Daddy At The Opry is enthusiastically recommended reading -- especially for dedicated fans of the Grand Ole Opry.
Page-Turner.......2003-11-16
I picked it up to thumb through and couldn't put it down. It's beautifully written, full of photos, and absolutely fascinating. You don't have to be a country music buff to enjoy this book. It has great stories of many others from Andy Warhol to John Ritter. I felt like the proverbial fly on the wall. It's a must have, if only for the history lesson, but it's so much more.
Customer Reviews:
Great Ideas, but..........2001-05-16
Every child will relate to something different. The children for whom I bought this book didn't relate. It was too boring and they lost interest in hearing it read. I loved all the ideas, but would recommend reading it at a library to your child first to see if they respond to the style of writing. I would highly recommend "The Unwedding" as an alternative. Written in a child's humor with a child's perspective, my children ask to read it again and again.
