Johanna Lindsey brings to glorious life her beloved aristocratic family of adventurous rogues and spirited ladies as the Malorys confront the shocking news that Jeremy, the rakehell son of gentleman pirate James Malory, has fallen in love.
When Jeremy Malory hires Danny, a young woman who grew up on London's streets disguised as a boy, as his upstairs maid, he secretly intends to make her his mistress. But Danny surprises him with her dreams of becoming a refined lady and a gentleman's wife. As she transforms from urchin to elegant beauty before Jeremy's eyes, she unwittingly captivates the charming scoundrel. Now high society tongues are wagging: Who is this mysterious newcomer, and what is the truth about her past? Pretty good .......2007-06-01
I think her previous Malory novels were better, but it is nice to see what the family is up to.
Johanna at her best........2007-01-10
Following the Malory family is a treat regardless of the family member. I became a fan of the Malory clan with Gentle Rogue.
Johanna outdoes herself with the story of Jeremy Malory, the son of James Malory the Rogue himself. The parrallel paths of father and son are wonderful. Most of all, the plot though dangerous continues with the humor I love so much about the Malory clan.
The parrallel? Father and son fall in love with a woman that has a way unto themselves in male togs. Both taut male names, and both fight heaven, earth, and themselves to win that true love that has smacked them across the head with a sledgehammer.
Unique.......2006-11-29
I have been reading Malory novels since I was 16 and still in High School, I'm 28 now and I still love them just as much now as I did then. I don't read romances as much as I did when I was a teenager, but authors like Lindsey keeps making me come back.
I thought this storyline was unique, the fact that it did revolve around servants. In a way it reminded me of the movie "Ever After" where Drew Barrymore's character was forced into a servant life but was not born one, same with Danny.
Jeremy is also my favorite Malory man, so I loved that he was paired with such a fiesty and seemingly unlikely partner.
Love it!.......2006-11-08
I have read other Johanna Lindsey novels in the past and I'm glad that I read this one, as well.
At one point, I was literally 'laughing out loud' @ 3 a.m. in the morning - J.L.'s wit as a writer is wonderful and it adds nicely to the 'romance', I think.
Keep up the good work and I'm purchasing 'Marriage Most Scandalous', soon after.
Aloha.

Penzler Pick, February 2000: Just as Robert B. Parker and Dennis Lehane have made Boston their own and Los Angeles has been the distinct province of a lineage leading from Raymond Chandler and Ross Macdonald to Michael Connelly and Robert Crais, so is George Pelecanos the storyteller who's put Washington, D.C., on the noir map. Once considered "the best-kept secret in crime fiction" by his peers, he is now fast leaving behind those days of strictly word-of-mouth fame and cult status.
Telling it like he sees it, and looking fearlessly into those dark, forgotten alleyways that lay too far beyond the corridors of power to make it into any guidebooks, Pelecanos conjures up a gritty, ghostly Washington of working-class neighborhoods and aging suburbs and shoots it through with chillingly unpredictable menace. Most Washington natives probably wouldn't recognize the place--but they couldn't stop trying either, knowing that they've at least glimpsed (out of the corners of their eyes) those environs where a Pelecanos character is most at home.
In Shame the Devil, we find a society of grieving men and women connected by loss, betrayal, the need for revenge, and the shadowy presence of evil. As in other Pelecanos tales, the heroes are not easily identified, love is a coming together of wounded souls, and answers are found where least expected. In the aftermath of a botched armed robbery, a fair number of lives have been thrown into a downward spiral. The problems, however, come on faster and with more fury once the status quo sustaining the survivors has been breached by an ill-wishing and unwanted addition to their little group.
Here are two favorite moments. In one, protagonist Dimitri Karras asks the name of a fellow bar patron. Hearing that he's called Happy, Karras comments that he doesn't look too happy. The answer: "He's pacing himself." The other: we hear the thoughts of the sociopathic villain: "Some believed that incarceration was a mark of failure, but Frank disagreed. Prison was an essential element of any career criminal's education."
With Shame the Devil, Pelecanos solidifies his position among the elite of the brilliant coterie of young noir writers who are creating the emerging classics of the genre. --Otto Penzler
Book Description
The boys are back in town
Frank Farrow is a natural-born killer. Roman Otis is a fine-looking crooner who does his killing on the side. On a hot D.C. afternoon Frank and Roman hit a pizza shop called May's. When the hit was over, four people were executed. A cop was shot. A boy was dead. And when the sirens stopped wailing and the killers vanished into the heat, dozens of lives were shattered forever.
Now it's three years later, and Dimitri Karras, who lost a son, is starting to live again. But Dimitri's old acquaintance, a P.I. named Nick Stefanos, has just unburied the past--by discovering the killers' identity. Suddenly the second act of a crime story is about to be told. Because the May's pizza parlor killers are coming back into town: where they'll be greeted with open arms, broken hearts, and at least one loaded gun.

John Steinbeck with a pistol.......2005-09-15
George Pelecanos is at his best in SHAME THE DEVIL, and Pelecanos at his best is pure American street fiction at its finest. While frequently compared to such writers as Dennis Lehane and Jim Thompson, it is perhaps most accurate to look at Pelecanos in the light of someone like John Steinbeck. Pelecanos builds a tight world of cops, fry cooks, appliance salesmen, store clerks, and sets them in motion with the most basic of all human motivations: fear, love, anger, and regret. If you've not read Pelecanos, pick him up today. SHAME THE DEVIL is a great place to start and once you're in his world, you won't even bat an eye at the phony bloodless paperdolls populating the vast majority of popular fiction today.
Powerful, gritty storytelling.......2004-12-29
I'm new to George Pelecanos with this book, but it seems like the world at large is now getting to know him through his involvement in the HBO series The Wire (writing and producing). Shame the Devil is an interesting character study that becomes tremendously suspenseful in the 2nd half. I enjoyed the shifting focus, back and forth from Nick Stefanos the ex-cop and PI, to Dimitri Karras and the other members of the survivors group, and of course to the bad guys. There was no single lead character in this book, but I was glad just to go with the flow of the story. This is also a tale that builds grippingly to a grim conclusion. It was literally a page-turner -- I had to force myself to slow down and not skip anything. I picked this up as a bargain book, and feel grateful to be introduced to an author whose other works I will seek out.
Nick and Dimitri sitting side by side . . ........2004-05-22
at the Spot. It's about time. SHAME THE DEVIL completes my reading of all of the Pelecanos books and I just have to say what a pleasure it was. SHAME THE DEVIL opens with a brutal robbery and killings at May's Pizza Parlor and the death of 5 year old Jimmy (Dimitri's son) during the getaway of the robbery.
Several things I liked about this book include:
**SPOILERS**
The group meetings of the survivors of the victims who were killed in May's.
The family atmosphere of The Spot including Phil, James, Maria, Mai, Anna, Darnell, Ramon, Dan Boyle and Happy. I could feel the past books coming off the pages when I first entered the Spot in this book.
Nick offering Dimitri a job so he can feel some sort of routine and structure in his life after the death of his child. VERY WELL DONE.
Both Nick and Dimitri's struggle with faith and a higher being.
Loved hearing how well Marcus and Elaine Clay are doing.
The tie-in to the masterpiece, THE BIG BLOWDOWN, which I always considered to be Pelecanos' best work. This one competes so well I'm not sure which one I would choose to be the best.
I know George P. thinks his Derek Strange books are his best but the three Stefanos books and the D.C. quartet are equally as good. I like the Strange series but the Stefanos character both old and young tip the scales for me.
In the end Nick leaves the Spot(as do two other characters) to try to control his drinking. Change is inevitable. It will be interesting to see where that goes should George P. continue this series. (I certainly hope so).
It is definitely beneficial to read these books in order because you really do get the big pay off when you read SHAME THE DEVIL last.
Highly recommended. A MUST READ.
P.S. the William Bell song YOU DON'T MISS YOUR WATER is mentioned here while Dimitri is sitting at the bar and he enjoys listening to it. It's on the HARD REVOLUTION CD. I enjoyed reading about it because the song jumped out me while listening to the CD. I could hear it clear as a bell. I also really enjoy A FOOL FOR YOU, I'VE BEEN LOVING YOU TOO LONG, DON'T FIGHT IT and TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT.
You outdid yourself on this one, G.P.
a tight, well-developed crime novel.........2003-04-07
'Shame the Devil' is the last in a series of novels by George Pelecanos tracing the lives of Greek immigrants and their decendents living in downtown Washington. While there is no need to read all the previous three novels, which I haven't done, I suggest reading at least one (perhaps the first, 'The Big Blowdown') to gain a historical perpective to the characters, the setting, etc.
'Shame the Devil' is very well-written, complete with excellent characterizations. While it doesn't have much of the drug culture found in the author's other novels it does contain more than its fair share of violence, extreme sadistic violence. The book drips with evil. Simply put, the story is about revenge and redemption. Certainly not in the same league as 'Crime & Punishment' but nonetheless a fine story. My only criticism is that at times, especially towards the end, the author gets a bit soppy. The good guy characters start hugging and snivelling. Why the author chose to insert "Kodak moments" into this hard-hitting novel is anyone's guess.
Bottom line: George Pelecanos is really a terrific crime writer. Enjoy.
Pelecanos at his best.......2003-02-23
How does Pelecanos do it? He just keeps churning out 1 great book after another. Shame the Devil is no exception, GP's discriptions of DC, and his ultra realistic dialog sets him apart from the rest. If you like your crime fiction in an urban setting with no sugar coating, it does not get any better than Pelecanos.

Book Description
A first-time novelist, Joyce Palmer writes with raw talent and true freshness, using a voice thats uncontrived, unselfconscious, and immediate.Set in Jamaica, Greenwichtown is the story of Fay Myrtle, a young, innocent, eight-year-old girl who lives in a shack outside a plantation. An older sister takes her from the village to the inner-city ghettos of Greenwichtown, where she lives as her sisters daughter. There she has the chance to go to school and attend church, and her inner life thrives despite abuse by her sister and the squalor and poverty surrounding her. Bearing her trials and mistakes with hope and honesty, Fay views the world with endearing simplicity and wisdom. As Fay comes of age and searches for love, she gets caught up in a web of betrayal and devastationcapped by the death of the only man who ever loved her.
Customer Reviews:
A gripping and amazing story........2007-01-26
This story is brilliantly told in the vernacular. Fay, the protagonist, is the last child of a family of eight. She is four years old at the beginning of the story but at the end she is a young woman of twenty. Life in the country with her mother and siblings is difficult indeed but in a way she is happy. Life changes when Flo, her eldest sister, comes to see the family and takes Fay for a visit to Kingston. This visit last sixteen years.
The violence in this book is hellish. The poverty, overwhelming. The reader is made to intimately feel the suffering Fay goes through. This book brought me to tears. However amidst all the squalor there is occasionally an oasis of kindness. Thank God!
Note: Cokee reminds me of Jack DeCotreau in the novel 'What Goes Around...'by Paula Aird. Check it out!
A Great Read!!!.......2002-06-12
I just had to E-mail the author Joyce Palmer and tell her how much I enjoyed the book on so many levels. I had been to Jamaica several times and this book really brought the towns and people to life for me. I could imagine everything that happened to Faye and I felt her pain & despair and later on love & joy. It was a story of finding what was right & true and the unbreakable bond of Mother & child. I have recommended this book to several friends and they all came away with something different. Truly a wonderful story.
Greenwichtown.......2002-05-07
A wild, wild tale of a young girl living in Greenwichtown and has to endure voilence and ugliness on a daily basis until later on in the book were she leaves the country to look for work and try to support her family. And boy were they really poor. A lot of scenes are graphic and would have you in therepy if you had to witness the scenes the way Fay Myrtle had to. It was a nicely written novel but life in Greenwichtown I would wish on my worst enemy.
...Greenwichtown!.......2002-04-23
I was hooked from the very first page. Joyce Palmer describes life in the Jamaican country and in Greenwichtown with such vivid detail that I was transported vicariously to the world of Fay Myrtle. This book is not only touching in its frank description of life in a Jamaican ghetto; it also educates the reader on the effects of Jamaican politics and the caste system. The book is an easy read and used enough patois to be authentic without overwhelming readers who are not familiar with this language. Although there are numerous sad, dark, and shocking moments, hope prevails in the midst of hopelessness and the book will leave you smiling or crying, but definitely satisfied.
Couldn't Put It Down.......2002-04-22
I couldn't put this book down once I started it, which has been a rarity for me lately!!
Most of us think of Jamaica as just sunshine and beaches. Greenwichtown shows us what life is like for the children growing up in poverty on the island. It isn't all pretty but it is fascinating for those of us that have never had to experience this type of poverty. The book was well written and is heartwrenching. Definitely an eye-opener!!!
Customer Reviews:
It works! How often can you say that about an abs book?.......2006-09-21
I bought this book for a second time after misplacing the original. I fell off the program several years ago when life got in the way. It's difficult to say no to all the fast food, high fat treats.
This time around I lost 9 pounds around my middle in just three weeks. And I'm not done yet. Sticking with it is the most difficult part, though it isn't that hard to do. It gets easier as you go.
This is a life-long eating adjustment. Not a diet, or short term fix. You have to be willing to give up the typical high-fat American diet.
As an unexpected bonus though, you get a "binge day" once a week! Eat anything you want, in quanities you want, once you reach your goal. Your low fat eating plan will compensate and you'll be less likely to give up the program.
Stick one of the before/after pictures on your fridge. I'm living proof that these pictures are true. Three months can make a fantastic difference in your shape and life.
Three months. If you choose not to do it, three months from now you'll still have a that paunch and flab.
A good (if somewhat outdated) bibliography is included.
The best of the abs books.......2004-10-21
My informal surveying of guys shows that they wouldn't buy such a book as this because all you need to do to get "flat abs" is to do more crunches or sit-ups.
As I've written about in "Exercise & Health" and "Men's Workout" magazines many times, that is not the only solution. There are many guys who do serious crunches every day and don't lose their middle.
To really get lean abs, you have to know a variety of facts, and Vedral has included all of them in this book without going on in useless detail. It's sort of a little book, which makes it easy to read and later refer to. Absolutely crucial information is here: why a low-fat diet will help, how the number of repetitions vs. the form you use affects your progress, and the many varieties of exercises you need to do. Most people don't know that simply doing basic crunches won't make your stomach lean. That only works one part of your ab muscle structure.
There are other ab books out there, but if you don't care to read 250 pages about abs, and need a get-to-the-point guide, here it is.
Very good start on abdominal excercise........1999-02-26
Good book for its day, which has been superseded by a book on a different level: "The Complete Book of Abs" by Kurt Brungard.
Very effective if you are disciplined.......1998-02-05
This book provides a simple, straight-forward method for strengthening your abdonminal muscles and eliminating a "gut". If you follow the instructions, it works. It does require discipline, especially at first. After the first 12 weeks, it becomes much easier to maintain.
