5 out of 5 stars Post WWI, Literary Modernism, and History in American Society.......2005-09-26

What does history mean to you? For every college student who has taken an American literature class that covers the early twentieth century, they will come across excerpts of THE USA TRILOGY: 42nd Parallel, 1919, and BIG MONEY. Through out the reading of John Dos Passos' THE USA TRILOGY, this question may penetrate through the mind of each reader that encounters these three books, which were quite innovative during the time in which they were published. This three-volume publication is rich with historical references that pertain to the Civil War, WWI, Industrial Age, and the Russian Revolution. This may be a travel log through Post Modern twentieth century history when writers spontaneously wrote about every bit of observation and engraved them in large volumes of text. Dos Passos was one of those novelists that evolved during the post-WWI age.

Dos Passos wrote about the ever-changing American landscape after World War I that affected the politics as well as the social structure that occurred as a result of the inclusion and exclusion of immigrants that erupted with much nationalistic and xenophobic fervor as well as paranoia. Historians may consider this period in history as the first wave of the Cold War. However, his topics concentrate on the build up of urban development and union formation in the city versus break down of rural and small town constructs of the country. From New York to the coastline of Hampton Roads, Dos Passos covers a wide terrain.

With its experimental poetry and newsreel and newspaper headline layout, the book reads like countless interruptions or intermissions between the narratives. Dos Passos creates a tremendous amount of vivid images that may create a mental picture of the words conveyed in the book. There are splashes of imagery and symbolism that represent the atmosphere in which Dos Passos experienced, which resembles a biographical and bibliographical array of experiences that influenced what he wrote. Therefore, the reading of this fine text takes both an objective and subjective point of view because of its creative nonfiction slant.

Dos Passos' work may be critiqued by literary academics, but speaking from a historical perspective, this set of novels have the history of the early twentieth century in the form of snapshots of the period from narratives that resemble oral histories to commentaries of US history that span from regions divided by the war of the states to the upheaval of the Great Depression. This book is recommended for those who are enticed with US history in the form of a novel. It may take months or a summer to seriously read, but it will be worth the read.

3 out of 5 stars Pessimistic and plotless...........2005-09-07

USA is billed as a trilogy, but I defy anyone to read The 42nd Parallel, 1919, or The Big Money as a stand-alone book and come away satisfied that they've read a story. Indeed, it's difficult to milk a plot out of the combination. Dos Passos presents a steady stream of characters throughout the "trilogy" whose paths occasionally cross. But, the interaction of characters doesn't ensure a plotline and USA singularly fails to develop one. What there is instead are sequential experiences of men and women in the early 20th century either battling it out with the evils of capitalism or, far less frequently, riding high upon it's rising tide.

Dos Passos wrote these books while in total thrall with socialism and, not surprisingly, somewhat taken with the communists. Accordingly, he offers a gritty, pessimistic, cynical rendition of America that is more artifice than actual. Indeed, one is hard-pressed to find a Dos Passos character making something as mundane as a wise decision. All too often, his creations choose the path that is destined to end in personal tragedy. As the reader, I often felt I was privy to a 1920's version of Jerry Springer with the never ending supply of relentless drunks, STD sufferers, deserters, suicides, serial adulterers, batterers, and child molesters. Interwoven within these character "studies" are abbreviated newreel clips (largely obscure), real-life contemporary bios (well done), and autobiographical stream of consciousness bits that work on some levels, but not on most.

Though there's no doubt that many industrial labor practices of the early 1900's were abhorrent by any reasonable standard, Dos Passos might have preferred our progress thereafter to Solzhenitsyn's gulags. Far less sanguine about the prospects of communism, he undoubtedly would have created a less cynical American novel. Indeed, by 1964 Dos Passos had completed an ideological 180 with his support of Barry Goldwater. Though some may think this a pendulum swing too far, such political nimbleness might explain the strong whiff of subjectivity emanating from his earlier social commentary. 3 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Words like old newsreels, 1920's here we come!!!.......2003-08-10

John Dos Passos wrote three novels that are encapsulated by the title: "USA."

These novels are beautiful and sublime in their composition. While reading of some sad stories as well as some humorous ones, the readers is taken on a journey through the 1920's in America. We get a sense of what it was like then. His chapters begin and often end in a "NEWSREEL" imitation. In an age where we as readers have so much "bit" information flashed before our eyes, this mode works well at getting the snapshot ideas he is alluding to in the novels.

Dos Passos is a genius of words-- I recommend taking this one to the beach, especially if you are an American city history buff.

5 out of 5 stars The real history of America.......2002-09-07

I read this book first in 1967 while in high school, given to me by a teacher who wanted me to understand the real American History. When he told me an American general marched on World War One veterans in Washington, DC after WW I and killed many who were looking for veterans benefits I knew this book would be special. It delivers history in a most compelling and unique way, unlike any other book I've read. Americans don't know the whole truth of US History. These three books pick a period and educate, entertain, horrify and overwhelm you with our culture, our past, our politics. It is a must read for anyone remotely interested in US history. One of my favorite books of all time.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent social inquiry, mediocre work of literature.......2002-08-08

Long heralded as a monumental portrait of American society in the early decades of the 20th century, John Dos Passos' U.S.A. trilogy is, if nothing else, an amazing display of intellectual endurance. Few novels that I have come across are more ambitious or broader in scope. In 1240 pages, Dos Passos attempts to characterize a vast, growing nation in one of its most dynamic periods in history. While he gloriously succeeds as a sociological study, it is unfortunately at the expense of producing a mediocre work of literature.

It is important to point out that while the three installments of this trilogy were written several years apart from each other, this is most definitely one book, not three. The first and second books, The 42nd Parallel and 1919, have no proper conclusion, and The Big Money, the trilogy's final installment, is a logical progression in terms of style and chronology, if not plot. So reading any of these books on their own, or reading them all out of sequence, would be a thoroughly unsatisfying experience.

It is clear from early on that Dos Passos has bitten off more than he can chew, at least from a literary perspective. His goal is to capture the essence of an America caught in the throws of industrialization and fervent capitalism, and the inevitable wealth gap and social class struggle that result from this economic expansion. He also tackles the difficult task of explaining this country's painful ambivolence towards the war in Europe and the sense of euphoria in the years following it's conclusion. But these themes are vast and unwieldy, far bigger than any one character in the novel, and as a result, the characters themselves become forgettable and quickly get lost. In a sense, there is only one main character in this novel, and it is America herself.

But America is not a person, it is a country and society, and as such the U.S.A. trilogy at times takes on the feel of a social inquiry more than a work of fiction. The other characters, through whose experiences we study the social landscape and fabric of early 20th century America, lack depth and dimension. They are mere stereotypes chosen by Dos Passos to represent various segments of society. There is the down-and-out vagabond, wandering the country and living hand-to-mouth, bitterly condemning the economic wealth all around him from which he is excluded. You have the quintessential rags-to-riches success story, the boy who started with little more than a dollar in his pocket and a whole lot of ambition, and amassed an economic fortune, but at the expense of his humanity and health. We also find the New York socialites, the Communist activists, the labor union organizers, the proud and rowdy GI soldier. But there are no real people, as such characters would not serve the greater purpose of defining American society in the way that Dos Passos sees it. And as a result, the experiences and interactions among these characters are also stereotypical.

Despite its shortcomings, the U.S.A. trilogy is worth reading, as it constitutes an important contribution to the understanding of our nation and its history. And in many ways, the great ambition of this novel encouraged other writers to strive to create works of fiction that were not just of literary merit, but also of important social significance. However, for a far more satisfying literary experience, Theodore Dreiser's An American Tragedy accomplishes on a micro-level what Dos Passos attempted to achieve on a broader scale. But unlike the U.S.A. trilogy, Dreiser's work is a true pleasure to read.

4 out of 5 stars First Leslie Glass book I've read.......2007-08-29

There is no question I enjoyed this book, but I don't see this as 5 star material. I did love the April Woo and the MIke Sanchez characters. I also thought the supporting characters were extremely well done, from Tang, April's mother, Ching, Kim, Clio, Wendy etc. I especially liked the fact that the lead detectives were just good detectives. They weren't superheroes. I understand this is one of a series of books featuring April Woo. I will read more of them for sure. Leslie Glass gives the reader very good characters and a good story. What it lacked for me was real tension. The climax to the story kind of fell flat after the build up. I was expecting the climax to come at Ching's wedding. It didn't but I could live with that. Just stumbling onto the killer at a restaurant where he just happened to stumble onto his intended victims though kind of felt tacked on. Anyway, I would recommend this one to those who like mysteries/thrillers and strong, real lead characters.

5 out of 5 stars Can April solve the Bride murders in time for Chings wedding.......2004-01-17

The Silent Bride is the latest (when I wrote this) in the April Woo Series. April Woo is an ABC (American Born Chinese) NYC PD Police Sergeant. As usual this story is fast paced and a great mystery thriller. You are given enough clues to figure out who did it but not until the very end does it all come together, as the writer cleverly steers you down a few other paths along the way.

In this one you again have Lt. Mike Sanchez and April working together. You also get to see a bit more about "Skinny Dragon" Mother and sister cousin "Ching".

Mike and April are trying to figure out who would kill a bride on her wedding day (in the church at that) is it a hate crime? A crime of passion? But, wait before we get to far into solving the crime there is another wedding murder across town. And while the way the bride is again shot there appear to be no similarities in the families. But, there are a few things that link them together and there is a possibility a few of these things might also put "Ching" in danger. Not to mention that "Skinny Dragon" says this is bad luck for Chings wedding.

Along the way April and Mike also hit some rocky patches in working together. But this is not a romance book.. This is a Mystery Thriller with a little romance thrown in on the side. (I.e. My Dad even likes the series)

While this books stands along I also recommend going back and starting with the first one so that you get to really know the characters!

5 out of 5 stars The Weddings That Weren't.......2003-01-04

Leslie Glass improves with every April Woo novel. April has developed into a unique character, her stories show increasing depth and excellent research, and even her romance with the long-suffering Mike Sanchez is finally showing some sparks of maturity. With a myriad of colorful characters "The Silent Bride" is her best yet.

April and Mike are called upon for a high profile murder of the bride at an Orthodox Jewish wedding. The well-to-do, deeply devout family are not obvious suspects, nor is the groom who 1) was standing at the other end of the aisle when the shot was fired and 2) barely knew his bride to be. (This was an arranged wedding.) A hate crime is suspected, but less than a week later another bride is shot and killed entering St. Patrick's cathedral. This high society wedding had almost nothing in common with the first murder except the wedding planner, gown designer and florist. The planner is light-fingered and a crack marksman, the florist has a flamboyant lifestyle and likes to "adopt" boys from Third World countries, and the gown designer is enough like the real-life Vera Wang to make me take her off the suspect list immediately. The problem is why would any of them do something that would probably destroy their businesses?

I had a soft spot I didn't know about for brides. It was almost as shocking to think of a bride being killed as it would be a child. And the author does not let you off easily. Bride #1 was totally innocent, had never been on a date, a dreamy quiet girl. Bride #2 was spoiled, but likeable and had her whole life in front of her. April's sister/cousin who was to be married in a week was perhaps a designated third victim. This ratcheted up the sense of urgency nicely. The florist's "boys" came under observation, and the author gives a chilling picture of young men who have suffered horrible psychological damage, seen their whole family destroyed, made to serve in an army at 10 years of age, then being "rescued" and sent to the U.S. by well-meaning people, but with very little desperately needed guidance and help.

I hope this is the big breakout for Leslie Glass. April Woo has grown up and is ready to take her place among the big boys.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome back, April Woo..........2002-09-23

First I'd like to thank Leslie Glass for continuing the fine April Woo series without using "Time" in the titles--now my friends and I will be able to buy them immediately without having to check to make sure they're not ones we've already read! This one's an excellent addition to the series, with some real progress in the April/Mike relationship, and a wonderful twist to help make Skinny Dragon at least a little accepting of it. Very interesting to see how the characters' extensive varieties of cultural differences and ways of thought contribute to this plot. This should have a warning label that it is not to be read the night before your wedding! The book is very intense and suspenseful; if you enjoyed the other April Woo books, you won' t be disappointed with this one, and will be glad to know another is on its way.

4 out of 5 stars Thank God, April Woo is back!!!!.......2002-07-31

As a die-hard April Woo fan I was chomping at the bit to get my hands on 'The Silent Bride', and as usual I wasn't disappointed. Leslie Glass does a superb job of taking the reader inside the expensive world of society weddings, while simultaneously showing the dark, gritty, side of the work necessary to pull off these types of events.
When the story opens April quickly gets caught up in an investigation of a bride murdered at the altar of her wedding day, she also has to deal with being a member of her sister-cousin's wedding party. And of course her relationship with Mike Sanchez is rapidly heading toward matrimony. When a second wealthy bride is murdered outside her church, April has to put her personal problems aside and solve the case before her sister-cousin's wedding. All in all this is a very good book, I even thought the villian's motive for murder was beliveable.

              1 out of 5 stars Sad book!!.......2007-09-18

I had a hard time reading this book because I could not concentrate on the stories. I found them to be so boring, at times very depressive and sad. In the middle of the first story, I stopped reading it to jump to the next one only to abandon it within few pages.

              5 out of 5 stars A nice, pleasant read.......2007-02-28

Since the other reviewer did such a nice job, I won't go into repeating what she said. I originally thought about buying these books seperatley, but then I saw that they were all in a novella, which saved me $$:). I found that I really enjoyed these stories, and that I was really able to get into them. My favorite of these was "Both Sides Of the Easel," which featured Mateo and Bianca. I felt that they were really well-developed, and that I could connect to them really easily. I also liked how Mateo was so supportive of Bianca's art and that he understood how much it meant to her while everyone else around her treated it as just a passing, youthful fancy that she was supposed to end once she became engaged.
I really enjoyed this book and am glad that I bought it. The Renaissance period has always fascinated me, and I was really happy that the author chose this as a setting for her stories.
If you are looking for a collection of pleasant, readable stories, then I suggest that you give this book a try!!

5 out of 5 stars Love conquers British socialite .......2006-11-26

Reviewed by Kelli Glesige for Reader Views (11/06)

Barbara Youree has taken her love for Italy and its Renaissance art when she visited Florence and written four short love stories. All four stories take place in an intriguing Italian Renaissance setting with characters struggling in keeping faith, dealing with love, and toiling with restrictions society has placed upon them. This collection is entitled "Renaissance Brides."

"Silent Heart" (2005) begins on a farm in France in 1572 with mother, Elise Chaplain, and her children, 16 year old daughter Francoise, and 11 year old son Etienne, fleeing for their lives after the rest of their family has been brutally killed because of civil war in France. To make matters worse, the plague is a constant danger. The kind Marinelli family helps the distraught Chaplains and the young Marinelli son, Stefano, finds himself in love with Francoise. But wounds run deep for Francoise after witnessing her family's death and destruction, and she feels too scarred to ever love again.

"Both Sides of the Easel" (2000) takes place in Rome in the early 1600's. It is the story of Bianca Maria, daughter of Stefano and Francoise, who desires to be an artist and follows the career of the best young artist in all of Rome at that time, Caravaggio. Marco Biliverti is Caravaggio's model who befriends Bianca and enables her to meet the famous Caravaggio. Unfortunately for Bianca, Caravaggio is nothing like she imagined him to be, but Marco is the perfect gentleman. After evil brother Jacopo kicks Marco, sister Annabella, and mother Costanza from the family's castle after their father's death, Marco dutifully takes the responsibility to see the family has all the necessary accommodations. Bianca soon begins to see the true colors of Marco.

"Forever is not Long Enough" (2002) begins in Italy in 1610 and finds the widow Costanza Biliverti trying to run the family vineyards despite a suspicious fire and stolen cattle. It is obvious the castle is housing a spy, but who could it be? With Marco away, the young Albret takes on new responsibilities. Tragedy occurs when daughter Annabella is kidnapped and a young merchandising train, led by Antonio, finds the distraught Annabella. Costanza is slowly pulled under Antonio's spell of charm.

And finally, "Duel Love" (2005) has Albret growing up and realizing how much he cares for Annabella, but his pride and honor to prove himself worthy take precedence over love. Taking place in Florence, Italy, in 1612, Albret foolishly agrees to a duel with the coward, Conte Frederic Bargerino, who has moved in on Annabella's affections after Albret deemed himself unworthy. Annabella attends the duel, but the participants are unsure of who Annabella really loves. In all four stories, history proves faith in God is resolute and love can prevail.

The stories in "Renaissance Brides" are engrossing and will keep you entertained, especially if you enjoy 17th century historical romance, for Barbara Youree appears to be a knowledgeable author. But be forewarned, "Renaissance Brides" is not a quick read. At 478 pages and with small print, you will be reading for awhile. I found I needed to stop a few times to rest my eyes with the print so small. My suggestion is to definitely pick up a copy of this book, but have a magnifying glass at hand just in case. Make sure you have a long weekend to devote to reading too!

this book makes me sick, by purchasing this book you are paying for the advertising of advertising.the author should be ashamed of herself. most of the book is full of offers for free diaper rash cream, formula or catalogs [FREE CATALOGS!!!! does anyone know of a catalog that you have to pay for]. Some links are dead and most of the information can be obtained anyone who can use a search engine and spell (or use google to spell for you). if you are thinking of buying this book don't.

If you are even slightly net-savvy, you will know about most of the sites and deals mentioned in the book. I think every parent to be can figure out the websites for pampers, huggies, gerber etc etc. Most of the so-called "free" stuff is useless anyway eg. when she says free maternity clothes, what she REALLY means is you can write to a manufacturer for a free CATALOG for the clothes. The wording is very misleading. I think the only person who will end up getting free stuff for baby is the author, with all the people she is ripping off with this book,

There are all kinds of offers available online, and through magazines, Sue M. Hannah has compiled all of these offers in one easy place. The book has saved me countless hours of searching for these offers, and as new parents know, babies don't give you a lot of free time. Thanks Sue!!

Free Stuff for baby was not only a fun read for me but brought me directly to sites without hours of searching the web. Plus, I also received free stuff in the mail and I discovered lots of new sites to brouse through. The one thing I liked best about this book is that it has Canadian information and websites along with the American ones. She also tells you what offers are available in Canada and what offers are not.

I couldn't get enough of this book!! I found websites on everything I needed: diaper needs, parenting ideas, safety information, educational materials, budgeting for baby! I really feel that I got more than what I paid for and am still using the book as a reference guide for websites.

3 out of 5 stars Most of the things could be found online.......2004-03-09

This book was So-So. I found that many of the things were outdated. Also, it is great for someone who lives in Canada as half of the things in the book are for Canadians. Also, it is great for parents of multiples. Almost every company gives something for multiples but not necessarily one baby. Buy it used.

                            5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!!!.......2004-03-02

This book was wonderful. Before our first child was born, we picked up this book hoping for a few "freebies" and ended up with HUGE amounts of stuff. Not just free products but also a lot of free resources that we otherwise would not have known about. Being from Canada, we loved the fact that the author wrote what was available in Canada and in the US! It is a must for all new parents ... that is if you like freebies!!
