5 out of 5 stars LAUGHS WITH MANTU.......2006-07-09

Siegel takes us on a hilarious journey through the dark arteries of cyber-sneakery. The book's satisfying on a couple levels: 1) It's freaking funny. 2) Thank God somebody did it to these *&!+@!!

Clearly, the internet has been a great gift to our unsavory brethren. Not to mention comedy writers.

4 out of 5 stars A Fast Read.......2006-06-25

This book has a lot of white space. It took me an hour and a half to read it. It's a bit repetitive in the last third. It's true value lies in it being an original source. How many of us would take the time to pull the leg of the ubiquitous Nigerian scammer? It is clear that the author did not start by thinking that he would write a book. He scammed the scammers for his own entertainment, then shared the fun with us. One note of caution, the scammers are both more sophisticated than Mantu and they remain dangerous. You should not try to replicate the author's feats of foolishness.

2 out of 5 stars A marginal read.......2006-06-14

It's not as funny as many other successful scambaits I have read. He does keep them on the hook though, which is the whole point. This book is rated PG, and does not contain toilet humor. The scambaiting tactics used here are a bit easy on the scammer(s), in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Scamming the scammers........2006-05-01

By now, anyone with a pulse knows that the internet cafes of Lagos, Nigeria are teeming with con artists who spend their days trying to separate the unwary from their hard earned savings. Many, if not most, of the victims are Americans and more often than not the transfer of money is accomplished through the handy services of Western Union.
Tuesdays with Mantu is a riotously funny book in which the author, Rich Siegel, chronicles his somewhat perverse exchanges of e-mail with a series of clueless Nigerian scammers. The amazing aspect of this entire endeavor is the fact that none of the scammers ever realize they're being put on even though putting on people is the stock and trade of their own livelihoods.
This book succeeds in demonstrating the craveness of the human spirit in a very entertaining fashion. Readers with cynical minds will find Tuesdays with Mantu particularly wondrous in its content. A great gift idea!

4 out of 5 stars Funny, but something's missing.......2006-04-09

While "Tuesdays with Mantu" is decidedly a funny read, it would have been better if Rich had done some more research. For instance, it is very unsatisfying him proclaiming that "I believe Emeka and Abacha are the same person" but provides nothing to substantiate this. Has he ever heard of email headers? Look up an IP address to see if it does originate from a Nigerian internet caf?? And there are a few trophies, but not nearly as many as for example in the world-famous Lilith vs. Mrs. Sese Seko (scammers in webcam at the Amsterdam Overtoom!). Still, this publication must be a success because try as I might I couldn't find a SINGLE 419 email in any of my well-filled spamboxes!

Judith McMonigle Flynn, the proprietress of Hillside Manor, a bed and breakfast located somewhere in the Pacific Northwest, ranges further afield than previously in Suture Self, the first hardcover mystery in Daheim's series. Wheeled away from her innkeeping duties and rolled into Good Cheer Hospital for a much-needed hip replacement, Judith brings her own hospital roomie: her trash-talking cousin Renie, who's checked into Good Cheer with Judith for a little orthopedic surgery of her own. Renie, who makes doctors, nurses, and hospital administrators want to take back their Hippocratic oaths and run for the hills, is a bitchy, whiny, sarcastic candidate for the most obnoxious patient of the year.

While Renie terrorizes the good sisters who run Good Cheer, Judith worries that the unlikely run of bad luck that's turned up the toes of a baseball star and an actress (both of whom checked into the hospital for minor surgery and checked out in body bags) will follow her into the operating room too. And when a third death occurs just as Judith and Renie are beginning their post-op convalescence, the cousins get their sleuthing act together and try to figure out what the killer's victims have in common and why they met their ends in a place devoted to the healing arts. Of course, that places the temporarily disabled ladies squarely in the sights of the murderer, whose identity is clear almost from the start to everyone except our gals. This isn't Daheim's strongest book; Creeps Suzette, Just Desserts, and Fowl Prey are better reads. But her many fans won't mind the slow pace and somewhat plodding unraveling of the plot, especially if they've ever had a bad hospital experience. There are people who love B & Bs and delight in near-bloodless mysteries. If you're looking for a get-well present for one of them, Suture Self might be it. --Jane Adams

    Book Description

National bestselling author, the incomparable Mary Daheim, makes her long-awaited hardcover debut with a cozy mystery nonpareil. Plucky bed-and-breakfast hostess Judith McMonigle Flynn and her acerbic cousin Renie are examining Big Bad Medicine, So hang on to your gurney...and check your vital signs at the door!

Judith McMonigle Flynn is despondent as the winter blahs set in with a vengeance. A bum hip has forced her to shut down Hillside Manor temporarily and limp off to Good Cheer Hospital for a much needed operation. It's the very same "haven of healing" where a famous actress recently kicked the bucket after routine foot surgery, and where an ace baseball pitcher in for an elbow operation was tossed out of the game...permanently. Judith is certain that her scheduled date with a scalpel has placed her at the top of the Grim Reaper's "hip list." At least she's not alone. Cousin Renie is checking in -- though hopefully not checking out -- at the same time to have a shoulder surgically corrected, but that's small consolation at best.

Good Cheer, it seems, is anything but. With one look at the medieval wreck of a place administered by a doddering collection of clergy, Judith is convinced that she and Renie will be lucky if they're rolled out of the OR alive. But they are -- though the same good fortune does not extend to an ex-pro football quarterback, who is sacked by fatal knee surgery, the third improbable, high-profile demise in less than a month.

Since they are stuck in this chamber of Hippocratic horrors for a while, Judith feels it's hers and Renie's duty to get to the bottom of the Good Cheer carnage. What they discover is that the list of potential Angels of Death is quite extensive indeed, incorporating not-so-well-wishing relations, potentially homicidal hospital volunteers, deadly docs...even the puffed up, corporate-ladder-climbing chief of staff himself. But as the mortality rate rises -- along with Judith's blood pressure -- the worst diagnosis of all is the one that suggests the cousins' curiosity is terminal...and that the killer is saving the last, lethal dose of medicine for them.

From Just Desserts to A Streetcar Named Expire to this, her latest, most wildly successful operation, Mary Daheim's delightfully zany Bed-and-Breakfast mysteries are just what the doctor ordered.

2 out of 5 stars Not one of Ms. Daheim's better ones & I've read nearly the whole B&B series........2006-04-22

For usually she's terrific. Maybe I'll bring it out and give it another try.

    3 out of 5 stars Just ok.......2005-06-25

This is the first book I have read by this author, and I can't say I was impressed. There are some funny moments and some cute dialog between the two cousins, but overall, it was a somewhat boring read. The story got old quick and I had a hard time paying attention to what was going on, or even caring for that matter. The one plus is it is a nice book for someone who would prefer not to slog through a lot of useless, gratuitous sex and vulgar language. I guess to be fair, I need to try another of this series before I judge too harshly. If you are looking for a fast paced, exciting, sit on the edge of your seat mystery, this is not the one

5 out of 5 stars Patients are dying after surgery, is it murder?.......2004-08-02

Judith and Renie are at it again. These cousins are a hoot!

Judith is off to the hospital for hip surgery. Renie is having rotator cuff repair. Unfortunately right before they are admitted, they learn that two recent well-known patients didn't make it after they had routine surgery.

Then while they are in the hospital recuperating, the ex-pro quarterback in the next room dies after minor knee surgery. Was he killed?

The cousins begin to look into the deaths at Good Cheer Hospital. This is not easily done. Judith is pretty much bed-bound, so Renie ends up doing a lot of the leg work. Most of the staff won't talk, but they do find a few who will give them a little information. But then most of them mysteriously go on vacation or are transferred.

Plus Renie is not the best patient. She is constantly finding a way to order in better food. Their neighbor across the hall, assists in this activity on a few occasions. Then a snow storm brings the town to an almost standstill. This also means that their husbands can't visit.

The husband of the first woman to die is a reporter. He stops in and chats with the cousins. A few minutes later Renie observes him being hit by a car in the hospital parking lot.

They know someone is up to no good and hope that they can survive while working to uncover everything!

I love this series. These cousins always make me laugh. They get into some of the wildest situations! Judith's husband and her mother are not as prominent in this book. They really add to this series as well. I like how the author can weave the various characters in and out depending on the setting. They still play a part, but maybe not as big.

The author has a real winner! If you are looking for a cozy that you can fly through and enjoy, you've found it!

I highly recommend this book and the entire series!

2 out of 5 stars This one is a flatliner..........2003-08-05

Suture Self begins with two sleuthing cousins scheduled for surgery at Good Cheer Hospital. Two famous people have already ended up dead and a third expires as the cousins recuperate. There were so many weakneses in this story that when I put the book down it was hard to pick up again. First, it's unlikely that strangers would stream into their room to fill them in on things that were none of their business. Second, the drug and homeless angles were flimsy nonsense. Third, and most annoying, was that Renie person. Why would a writer, having the power to create likeable characters in prominent positions in a story spawn something like Renie Jones? The cursing, screaming, unsympathetic attitude, etc. was WAY over the top and detracted from the weak plot. Lastly, there was no element of surprise at the end. Who didn't figure out that Jim was the killer half way through the book?
This was my introduction to this B&B series. If I read any of the others they will be checked out of my local library.

1 out of 5 stars the real mystery is why anyone bought this, ever.......2003-05-29

I'm not a huge mystery fan but ... I had heard of the author and figured I'd give it a shot. Never again. Mary Daheim's writing style grated on my last nerve. The book lurches between one underdeveloped character after another, all of whom spout incredibly mannered and expository dialogue. One character, talking to her best friend in the whole world, says: "I understand that modern medicine is a mess, but it seems impossible in a country as rich and supposedly smart as the United States that we could have gotten into such a fix." No one - I repeat, NO ONE - talks that way. It's the author's voice ringing out of her character's mouth, as clanging and awkward as a broken bell.

The names of some of her characters are ludicrous. This may be a small point, but have you ever met anyone named Torchy Magee? Outside of a ... Mickey Spillane novel, I haven't either. How about Johnny Boxx (with two x's)? Or the talkative Mr. Mummy? I can see where she was trying to amuse, but the names are so ludicrous, they become distractions. You lose the thread of the narrative entirely, thinking to yourself, Torchy? Huh?

And then there was the appalling lack of fact-checking. As one reader pointed out, Mary Daheim may not know anything about hip surgery or rotator cuff replacement surgery. My complaint is that she just as obviously knows nothing about Ecstacy. It will not blind you, drive you crazy, or cause you to expire. You cannot kill someone by putting that particular "street drug", as she likes to call them, into a bottle of soda. Cocaine? Yes. Heroin? Yes. It would have been far simpler and much more realistic to have her various characters die of overdoses of drugs that would actually kill them. So why did she choose E as one of the linchpins of her novel? Maybe because of all the negative publicity about it. Maybe she wanted to be topical. She's obviously anti-narcotics, unless they're prescribed by a physician. One character tells us that all she knows about Ecstacy is that it "does terrible things" to you... then proceeds to pop a few Valium later that night when she can't sleep. ...

Fans have said this is one of Mary Daheim's weakest works, so maybe I should give her a second chance. I'd be willing to start another book by her... and just as willing to put it down after five pages if it's as horrible as this one was. ...

These two and other rib-tickling situations can be found in this collection of 100 cartoons featuring doctors, nurses, health professionals, patients, hospitals, doctors' offices, waiting rooms, and health care and insurance companies.

                      Book Description

Kiki feels unwanted because her parents "favor" her beautiful sister. While ice skating in Central Park she makes a wish, then twirls in a super fast spin.

She spins deep inside herself and teleports to Cocovanilla's garden on the planet of Ice Dreamland. Through their breath, Kiki and Cocovanilla merge into one. Elated with her new identity, Kiki/Cocovanilla ventures beyond her garden gates.

She discovers Ice Dreamlanders are exploited by the King of Kones. Though he's not a true King, he has a bottomless treasure chest of gold. And he forces everyone to work for him.

In hopes of regaining joy and prosperity for her subjects, The Queen of Sorbet, the true ruler of Ice Dreamland, announces her engagement to the Royal Rum Raisin, Ruler of the Black Cherry Forest.

The King of Kones demands the Queen marry him or else he'll release the FEEFIEFOEFUM Giant, who will destroy Ice Dreamland.

The Queen agrees to the King's proposal on the condition that she first receives the Ice Veil. She claims no royal wedding is official without it. The King of Kones gives her until three bell tolls to get it. Or else.

Jamoca, the Ice Veil maker, entrusts Cocovanilla to deliver the Ice Veil. To reach the Palace in time, she must journey through the mysterious Black Cherry Forest.

During her adventures, she encounters a silly Goose, a mischievous wood elf, a feisty troll and the disgruntled Giant. By banding together they banish the King of Kones, liberate Ice Dreamlanders and reunite the Queen and Rum Raisin.

Cocovanilla and The Ice Veil is the first in a series of 12 fantastical adventure stories.

5 out of 5 stars Cocovanilla for all ages.......2007-08-25

I loved reading Cocovanilla and The Ice Veil. Each page is filled with brilliant, colorful and imaginative illustrations, and a story that holds your interest all the way to the end. I gave the book to my eight year old niece and she thought it was "the greatest". Author Ora Munter has a special talent for creating a fantasy world that all children would like to escape to. I look forward to reading her following books.

5 out of 5 stars More! More! More!.......2007-06-14

In the grand tradition of "The Wizard of Oz" and "Alice in Wonderland," Ora Munter's heroine, Kiki, finds herself transported to a strange but beautiful world where the tone (or should I say flavor?) is very ice cream and dessert oriented. There's the King of Kones, the Queen of Sorbet, Rocky Road and Royal Rum Raisin. Brilliantly illustrated by the author, this book is a fun ride for children and parents alike. Using lots of alliteration ("tooted his tooti fruiti trumpet") and strong and vibrant words, Ms. Munter creates a fantasy world that is sure to become a family favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Well Written Great Graphics ! .......2007-06-12

WOW WOW WOW ! This is truly AMAZING ! I LOVE this book. The Graphics are wonderful, The Writing Exceptional, the whole package is INCREDIBLE. 5 out of 5 stars A sweet fantasy.......2007-06-06

In this first time out, Munter introduces us to an edgy youngster from New Jersey who quickly finds herself swept into an alternate universe (a Willy Wonka-ish planet), where characters remind us of a trip to a sweet shop. My favorite character was Rocky Road. Not unlike the Land of Narnia, conflict quickly ensues between the "towns people" and an evil, would-be King, a wicked wizard and an avenging giant. Magical butterflies, romance and non-stop action and suspense round out this exciting adventure. This reader found the illustrations extremely accessible for children. We are left with the promise of further flights of fantasy and fun as the final chapter ends.

                            LIFTING THE VEIL OF YESTERYEAR

The young apprentice mage, Pierrette, discovers that the pages in the history books are fading away. Like stars going behind a passing cloud, the events that define the sunny world she loves are winking out one by one, and the shadows of ancient headless Gauls -- souls of the dead whose heads once adorned the pillars of the city of Provence -- are seen by night ...

Is the Black Time coming, when evil will reign supreme? The answer lies in the long ago when Provence was wild -- and Pierrette must brave the otherworld to travel there.

4 out of 5 stars The tale of Pierrette continues..........2002-07-21

In the first volume of the Sorceress's Tale, _The Sacred Pool_, L. Warren Douglas gave us a fascinating look at a Dark Ages world where the nature of magic is shifting along with human philosophies, and where the young girl Pierrette must train in the magical arts in order to save the world from destroying itself. Her story continues in _The Veil of Years_, which is not the intellectual tour de force that _Pool_ was--since Douglas has already done most of the necessary world-building--but which is more action-laced than its predecessor.

Pierrette has saved her sister from the demon that haunted Citharista, but her patron goddess Ma nags her to keep up her work--for the Black Time is still threatening, though she set it back for a brief while. Pierrette's spirit friends, Guihen and Yan Oors, need her help as well, for they are being reviled by villagers who blame them for the work of malicious ghosts.

The ghosts, it turns out, are issuing from a change of history. Satan, Eater of Gods, has discovered a historical linchpin at which he can create the world to his own liking--the time of Provence's conquest by Rome. Already, history books are fading out at that point, for it is now uncertain how history will transpire. Pierrette journeys back in time and discovers that the ghosts are being created by Druid sorcerers in a last-ditch effort to drive away the Romans. But only Pierrette knows what the dire consequences of the magic will be--Gaul will be saved from Rome but will lose its soul.

Disguised as a veleda, a prophetess, Pierrette must try to convince both the Romans and the Gauls to hear her warnings. Along the way, she also has to deal with her own sexual awakening, which threatens her powers of sorcery.

The Sorceress's Tale gains a wider sweep with this book; I'm eager to see Pierrette's battle go worldwide in book three.

The big question I had, when I started reading this book, was whether we really need to know what the distal radioulnar joint does (helps to supinate and pronate forearms, dummy!) to understand how to build bigger arms and shoulders. Thankfully, the sections that follow those on anatomy and kinesiology are more reader-friendly and, consequently, more useful. The Brungardts, who separately and together have produced books on abdominals and legs, here give an excellent introduction to organized exercise. The focus is on shoulder and arm exercises--and there are plenty of those--but the overall information on training techniques, diet and motivation is indispensable.

                                  Book Description

For men, broad shoulders and muscular arms are the archetype for strength and power. For women, the sagging underarm is one of the most common trouble spots. For both, defined deltoids make the waist appear smaller and separate the arm from the shoulder, creating an athletic and healthy look. Body-concious modern fashions make training the shoulders and arms a priority for everyone.

The Complete Book of Shoulders and Arms is the definitive resource to train these muscles safely. Each exercise is illustrated in detail, ranked for difficulty, flagged for lower-back risk and accompanied by explicit instructions and specific training tips to achieve optimal results. The exercise routines are based on the most current research in sports medicine/exercise physiology and were created by top strength coaches, athletes, personal trainers, exercise physiologists, doctors, physical therapists and nutritionists. Programs are designed for everyone from the novice to the advanced enthusiast, for the corporate executive with time-crunched schedules and for the senior concerned with wellness.

I bought this book after I bought the "The complete book of ABS" by the same authors. I was so impressed by the thoroughness and effectiveness of the first book, that I decided to try this one and "The complete book of butt and legs".

Here you will find every you need to: understand the muscles involved, how to warm and stretch them, how to perform all major exercises, and of course complete routines designed to fit the needs of almost everybody.

If you liked "The complete book of ABS", you will love this one.

Hi, i cant say enough about this author, i have most of his books and honestly all r gr8, its so good Detailed w/o, simple and easy to follow.

This is a virtual encyclopedia of exercises to target the deltoids, trapezius, biceps and triceps.

Unlike a lot of books, this one doesn't hand you a pre-fab workout for you to follow mindlessly. It's perfect for anyone who's looking to create a tailor-made workout based on their fitness level and available equipment, including barbells, dumbbells, and pulley/weight-stack machines. Its encyclopedic approach also helps alleviate boredom when your routine gets 'routine.'

While beginners might need a more structured approach starting out, this is still a good book for advanced beginners who have already integrated weight training into a regular fitness regimen.

5 out of 5 stars Have you read the other book?.......2001-09-10

If you have read the authors other book on abs then this is the same thing only dealing with the upper body. Same format, same nutritional advice, etc.
But seeing as how the authors Ab book rocked I have to say that this book rocks equally as well.

I have a dozen or so workout/wieght lifting books and Kurt Burngardt "Complete Book" series is by far the best. Follow his workouts and advice and you will get excellent results. When is Kurt going to finish the series with a "Complete Book of Chest and Back"? I will buy the first copy. I hope it is comming.
