5 out of 5 stars The Visitant (The Anasazi Mysteries, Book 1).......2007-08-08

This book was written to completely interhal you in its content. Making you a part of the story line brinking from one time line to another. I was totally on the edge of my seat all the time. Couldn't wait for the next book to arrive.

4 out of 5 stars An original tale..........2007-05-23

I just finished reading The Visitant. It takes place in Chaco Canyon, a place that's just a few hours from where I live.

I read the other reviews and I can identify with some of the complaints. Yes, the book needed some editing. I didn't need to read about hair being whipped or tucked over and over again. Nor did I need to know everything everybody was wearing at every minute. The relationship between Dusty and Maureen was contrived - didn't buy it. And what's with the weird capitalizations? Being from the area, I do know a few people from the Pueblos, I've never met anybody with a name like Maggie Walking Hawk Taylor or Hail Walking Hawk. Most of the local Native Americans I know are named Lujan, Vigil, Abeita, Russell, Begay, Yazzie. Okay, I have run across a Yellowhair but that's it. Don't get me started on what the characters in the modern part ate and drank in a desert environment. They should have been suffering from heat exhaustion with IVs in their arms. And 107 degrees in Albuquerque? Puullleeese! It rarely gets any hotter than 102 or 103. So there are my complaints. Now about what's good about the book:

It was still fascinating reading no matter how many things there were wrong. I cleared the first 100 pages in a couple of hours. Doesn't happen often. The authors are clearly knowledgable in their field and they kept a fast pace. I thought most of the characters, in both story lines, were pretty well developed. The elderly characters were the most interesting ones in this story and the best in any book I've read. In spite of my complaints with the modern story line I think it was helpful in holding my attention. I usually don't read historicals. The modern characters helped me to visualize the past better. It was also fascinating watching the modern characters uncover the bodies of characters that I thought I'd been reading about in the other story line. It was just a fun, fast, read with a lot of learning about anasazi mysticism and a long dead civilization. It was sad to see the decline of these people. Overall I enjoyed it and am now reading The Summoning God. I think I'm going to have some complaints about the authors grasp of the breakfast burrito when I'm done with that one.

THIS THE FIRST OF A WONDERFUL TRILOGY FULL OF WELL-RESEARCHED HISTORY, ANCIENT AND MODERN SOUTHWESTERN INDIAN MYSTICISM (A POINT LIKELY MISSED BY THOSE WHO WROTE THE CRITICISMS IN THEIR REVIEWS), MULTI-SUBPLOT MYSTERY, ROMANCE, AND A THOUGHT-PROVOKING WARNING FOR OUR "MODERN" SOCIETY, BOTH IN OUR MANAGEMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES AND OUR TREATMENT OF OUR CHILDREN.

MY WIFE AND I BOTH READ THE TRILOGY FIRST (AND ENJOYED IT THOROUGHLY!!!), ONLY TO FIND THAT "PEOPLE OF THE SILENCE" AND "PEOPLE OF THE MOON" DEAL WITH THE ANASAZI PEOPLE AND HAPPENINGS BEFORE THE TRILOGY. WE ARE NOW READING BOTH "PREQUELS".

WE ENJOYED THE TRILOGY SO MUCH THAT WE BOUGHT COPIES FOR SEVERAL FRIENDS, WITH THE ADVICE TO READ THE "PEOPLE" BOOKS FIRST. IT GIVES GREAT HISTORICAL CONTINUITY, AND MAKES IT A WONDERFUL 5-VOLUME ADVENTURE.

WE ARE SO PLEASED TO HAVE ENLIGHTENED SCIENTISTS LIKE THE GEARS TO GIVE LIFE TO HSTORY.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful New Experience.......2007-01-10

If you care for ancient rituals, combined with modern day beliefs, you will throughly enjoy this book. This is the beginning of a series of 3 different titles. The time period is ancient Indian lore/legend, some of the burial beliefs, and it then connects you with modern day technology. I was surprised to find such detail and information. The three titles carry you through the stories of a couple from their early teens to adulthood, and their children. As well as another story relating to the ancient day families. Certainly worth the read. Thank you for a new series (although old) to delve into.

5 out of 5 stars The Anasazi Mysteries Triogy.......2006-03-15

I got this triogy after seeing a lot of other reviews at first all I cared about was the indian half of the books. but I read the other modern half and liked it just as much. The entire triogy was great.

5 out of 5 stars A Modern Australian Classic.......2006-06-04

A few modern novels contain pivotal scenes that have stopped me in my tracks. These scenes I must carry around, like rogue radioisotopes in the bloodstream. Randolph Stow's Visitants is one such novel.

Born in 1935 in Geraldton, Western Australia, Stow had produced three novels by the age of 23. Any young Australian deserves a dose of the fifth, The Merry-Go-Round in the Sea (1965), suffused with love and memory from Stow's wartime childhood. Each should also be served his tart and rambunctious children's classic, Midnite (1967), which sends up Colonial Empire and Patrick White in equal merriment. These two are linear narratives in form, more so than Visitants, first published in 1979 but mainly drafted in the early `70s.

Stow was a Papua New Guinea patrol officer in 1959. In that year, a Trobriand Islands UFO incident was reported widely, but not to his isolated spot. His introductory note recalls that locals in his own sub-district described a similar phenomenon around the same time. A number of years passed before the incidents morphed into fiction. The wait was worthwhile, for Visitants is a finer artifice than To the Islands or Tourmaline, the novels that sprang from Stow's earlier bush sojourn in the far north of Western Australia. Visitants is its own satisfyingly complete neighbourhood, like no other place before or since. Well, maybe that's not 100 per cent true, given the allusions to (among other things) William Golding's Lord of the Flies.

Stow comes out at least equal on points with Golding. He was more the one who could draw on tangible life experience of remote tropical islands. He dares and succeeds with an ambitious structure for his short novel. The structure is an overlapping series of "witness statements" to a 1959 PNG "inquiry" into violent events of cargo-cult and tribal intrigue in and around Kailuana Island, home for the crusty old planter MacDonnell. Another white witness is Mr Dalwood, a greenhorn patrol officer who shares Stow's memories of Perth WA and its riverside university. Also testifying are MacDonnell's attractive young housemaid Saliba, Osana the sub-district government interpreter, and Benoni the tribal heir-apparent of Kailuana.

The main object of testimony is Alistair Cawdor, a patrol officer sent "troppo" by his wife's elopement. "It is like my body is a house, and some visitor has come, and attacked the person who lived there," he says. "My house is bleeding to death."

Cawdor, on the face of it just a swarthy Scot, almost doubles as some kind of dark king spoiling for self-sacrifice, his increasing disturbance a lightning rod for the delusions of race and conquest.

As you read, you don't really have to perceive subtler aspects on any conscious level to receive the organic imprint of the piece. As it takes shape, its striking choreography and comedy are made real by spates of colour, scent and humidity.

Inside such an arena, the evening may be "a pond of turquoise deepening to indigo beyond the islet", or "faded and changed to green: an apple-green peacock-green sky pouring down a pink and golden light". Often the wet air smells of mildew, enhanced by odours of "rotting wood and wood-smoke". Yet the morning wind may waft "the sea and the grass, frangipani flowers and chickens, the leaves that have every smell between vanilla and hay".

At first slightly opaque, the layered structure responds to patient reading, its poetic scenes suddenly stepping up in intensity as they move towards the turbulent conflict and conclusion. Such fiction, to borrow from Flannery O'Connor, resembles an impressionistic painting, which resolves into a complete "world in action told more by showing what happens around the story than by touching directly on the story itself."

Micky takes on the cases of a widowed mother looking for her daughter and a tough gay boy hunting for his biological mother. Together they stir in Micky a desire to search for her own mother, who abandoned her when she was a young girl.

5 out of 5 stars Finally this one is in paperback!.......2006-04-25

Finally this book is back in print. I read a friend's hardback copy, thinking the paperback would be out in a year or two. That was over five years ago. I was introduced to Micky Knight when
I picked up a mass market copy of THE INTERSECTION OF LAW AND DESIRE about ten years ago and looked for more books. Since the first two books were out of print, I waited for the next book in the series.
This excellent book about mothers and daughters kept me reading until my eyes wouldn't stay open. I finished it the following morning. Micky Knight has been described as "hard-boiled" by some reviewers, but I think that tough-veneered is a better description. In fact, she is extremely vulnerable. what I like most about Micky is that she doesn't just tackle ordinary crimes and shoot people and kick butt. Yes she does shoot a time or two, but it is usually not an easy thing for her and is almost always in self-defense and when she kicks butt, she doesn't bother to take names. Without giving away the plot, let me say this book is about daughters looking for their mothers -- including Micky.
Redmann writes complex plots and well-developed characters. There is a cast of friends beginning with Micky's lover Cordelia, and her ex-lover assistant DA Danielle Clayton (and her life-partner, Elly) Police Sargent Joanne Ranson and her life-partner Alex, Micky's cousin drag-queen Torbin and his life-mate Andy. We were introduced to them in the first of four mysteries and we learn a little more about them as the series progresses. There are some less likeable recurring characters, especially Micky's Aunt Greta and her despised cousin Bayard.
Micky Knight is a complex, usually likeable woman who cares deeply about others. If you haven't already read this book,do so. And read the three other Micky Knight books.

5 out of 5 stars All of the Micky Knight books are fabulous.......2003-03-14

and it's a crying shame that they are not kept affordably in print--for one thing, it deprives Redmann of some very well earned revenue. In many ways, this 4th installment of Micky's adventures reads like the natural conclusion to the cycle of investigations opened by the first volume in the series, when we were introduced to a tough and beautiful lesbian babe-magnet with a smart mouth and endless compassion for those in trouble. She's physical (and even promiscuous--but the series is about how she gets tamed), she's achingly vulnerable, she's noble, she's got demons. Only in Lost Daughters do we meet her settled into a proper relationship, so the angst quotient is considerably lower than in the other books. Still, the conclusion to her search for her mother is unbelievably touching, and handled with just the right measure of reserve. Much as I'd love to see more of her, I wonder whether Redmann (whose website, ominously, appears to have vanished from cyberspace) is finished with her adventures. If she is, I just pray that she has another heroine in reserve for us to cheer on. Like the Meg Darcy books, with their lovingly depicted St. Louis locales, the Mickey Knight stories set us in a believable New Orleans, with its social strata, its weather, its flavors and smells.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Cajun woman.......2002-09-17

I have all of the Mickey Knight series and i am hungry for more. As an avid reader of true crime, authors like Ann Rule, Roy Hazelwood etc, i was surprised at how well written these books were. I couldnt put them down.
Come on Ms Redman when is the next one coming out ???
Mickey Knight is brilliant. The storyline typical of the deep south and its age old mystery and the book seems to drag you willingly into the depths of its darkened corridors. The women appear real, not wishy washy like most lesbian heroines. The plot seems to easily weave its way through the book yet it keeps you on the edge of your seat waiting to see just what is about to happen next. I have spent many a sleepless night reading these books. I just couldnt put them down once i started reading them. Oh for the tardis to take me to New orleans.

                  5 out of 5 stars Absolutely hooked!!.......2002-08-13

I only recently discovered Micky and have devoured all 4 novels over a span of 3 weeks. I adore hard-nosed Micky with all her foibles and weaknesses. Add to that an amazing cast of characters and you can't go wrong with this book or any of the previously published in the series. I recommend them all! I only pray that Ms Redmann keeps churning out more Micky Knight adventures. I, for one, am hooked! Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars The Search for Mom.......2002-07-31

Having read "The Intersection of Law and Desire" before reading any of the others, I found myself wanting a Micky Knight of my very own. Since I couldn't find any around I decided my only other option was to read the rest of the series. "Lost Daughters" was by far my favorite of the bunch.

Micky's off-hand comment to favorite cousin Torbin sets her off on a search for one mother while her being a lesbian is responsible for starting the search for another. But the search that means the most to her is the search for her own mother. In between digging through files and filling out forms, Micky is trying to discover who's killing young women - young lesbians - and how Suzanne Forquet fits into the picture.

The ending - and the book - is one you'll want to read more than once. Pick this book up while it's still available. I hope Ms. Redmann writes more about this lovely heroine and allows us to see how her story really ends.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book, Poor CR's.......2002-10-28

Thouroughly enjoyed this book. The monsters are both imaginative and interesting. There seems to be an abundance of undead, but I expected that with a Ravenloft sourcebook. I really liked all of the dangerous plants, as well as the figurines, but...

...there are some serious challenge rating problems. The grave scarab, while weak, stands a chance of killing a low level character (especially one in full plate, where the scarab would be mostly protected while burrowing!). My main gripe with CR is the Radiant Spirit. I understand that CR 110 is a misprint, but BOY WHAT A MISPRINT! And you have to understand that some people are stupid enough to argue with the DM that if the book says 110, they deserve 110. Another creature, the crimson bones, has a CR of 2. While it is also relatively easy to kill, it constitutes a fair chance of killing a player. I'd have given it at least a 3.

Even with these few mistakes, it is still a very good book, and one I plan to use in my campaign. I also liked the artwork.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Monsters Return!.......2002-10-10

I've seen a few complaints about the artwork about how it is sub-par and in black and white. I'm sorry but the artwork in here is superb. This is the kind of world where you really should be thinking in terms of those old horror flicks. Most of the critters in here I recognize as old Ravenloft specific monsters brought back for the new edition. This is not a bad thing. I thoroughly enjoyed reading and using these monsters on unsuspecting players. One thing any D&D game can never have too much of are monsters to challenge the heroes. Great work.

                  3 out of 5 stars Some great templates but . . ........2002-09-06

There's very little else going for this book.

The slavishly alphabetical structure, combined with the lack of a good index, makes it difficult to find what you're looking for.

Plus, some of the classic beasties are included, but others are excluded in favour of some rather odd choices. On the whole, a worthwhile addition to the collection of any DM, if only for some of the nifty undead templates, but an imperfect book at best.

                    Book Description

Let the modern authority on yoga guide you on the most important journey you'll ever take.

As people search for inner peace amid increasingly hectic lives, the practice of yoga continues to gain popularity. Yoga means to yoke, or to bring together, the various aspects of the self -- body, mind, and spirit -- and while the physical and mental benefits of yoga are truly astounding, to many people the idea of yoga is intimidating. In fact, nothing could be easier than starting a yoga practice, and Yoga Zone Introduction to Yoga is the perfect guide.

In the first section, Yoga Master Alan Finger offers a brief history of the different types of yoga and how they are practiced in the West, including an explanation of the ISHTA yoga that Alan created and that is taught at Yoga Zone. You'll learn about the benefits of yoga and how to prepare for a practice with different breathing exercises. Next Alan outlines two series of beginner postures, accompanying each pose with detailed instructions on how to achieve it, along with tips and modifications for various fitness levels. All the exercises are fully illustrated and the text is instructional yet friendly, in the tradition of a Yoga Zone studio class. Following the postures, there's a special section on relaxation and meditation, cornerstones of any yoga practice. Packed with personality and full of valuable information, Yoga Zone Introduction to Yoga will introduce you to a life of unlimited possibilities and infinite joy.

5 out of 5 stars for all yoga beginers.......2003-10-07

Excellent book!! Teaches you how to do yoga from breathing exercises, warm up, strength building and so on, all the way through to relaxation. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in beginning yoga.

                    5 out of 5 stars Terrific resource.......2001-11-11

I have enjoyed the benefits of yoga for several years, guided by excellent teachers. After moving to a new city, I found that I was ready to pass on some of what I know, by starting to teach. This book has been a terrific find -- reminding me to look with fresh eyes at things that I had once learned in class or in workshops which had since become "automatic". I found the writing, illustrations and photographs clear and useful, with enough detail to support good practice. The examples of "misaligned forms" are also wonderfully clear for the novice -- with a colleague or a mirror, an independent student could make good and safe progress. It is a valuable complement to the other books on my Yoga shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro to Yoga & Yoga Zone.......2001-02-03

I am a rank beginner when it comes to yoga--I didn't even think about it until last year and just started taking classes this year (2001). This book provides a good introduction to Yoga Zone's brand of yoga--a mixture of three types: Hatha yoga (a physical form of yoga), Tantra yoga (a more philosophical form of yoga) and Ayurveda yoga (a healing form of yoga). The section on breath and breathing (an important part of yoga and life in general) is great and the descriptions and illustrations of the various postures are quite helpful (and take up the bulk of the book). Finger and Bingham have a very personable style of writing that makes it seem you are being spoken to, rather than reading a book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners..........2000-04-10

like me! Completely new to the yoga scene, I saw this listed in the "Editor's Picks" as one of the top yoga books and decided to buy it based solely on that. And I don't regret it. Alan Finger takes you not only on an informative and practical journey into the world of yoga, but a gently spiritual one as well.

The book is nice quality, with easy-to-read pages and beautifully illustrated poses. I like how he emphasizes substance over form i.e. you don't have to *look* perfect to have a perfect yoga practice. It's the approach and the inner work that goes with it that matters the most.

The form he teaches (ISHTA) is an amalgamation of different yoga "schools", developed by he and his father(a master yogi) and taught in their Yoga Zone studios. He gives a 20 min. practice and a 40 minute regimen, with the option to customize it later when you feel more adept and comfortable.

As for me, I already have all the poses for the 20 minute series marked in red, pages bookmarked, and I plan to get the video tape as well, to get even more benefit from seeing it in action. So, if you're a beginner like me, this seems like a great place to start and I highly recommend it. Now if you'll excuse me, I think I'll practice more of that "ujjayi pranayama" breathing... ;)

This book was wonderful, easy to understand, and perfect for beginners as well as seasoned yogis and yoginis. As a yoga teacher, I find myself referring to this book while teaching my class. It's a great way to get yourself started in yoga, and keep you strong and flexible.
