Book Description
In the tradition of the international bestseller The Red Tent comes a beautiful, sexy novel featuring Hannah, one of the most well-known and beloved heroines of the Old Testament.
Hannah and Pninah, once close childhood friends, become rivals for the attention of Elkanah, the man who has married them both. Pninah, passionate and independent, easily bears Elkanah many children, but bitter that he has taken her friend as a second wife, seeks fulfillment with her own secret lover. Hannah, the epitome of goodness and grace, remains completely devoted to her husband, but remains childless for many years, until a promise to God brings her the son she has yearned for.
Despite their differences, these two women must learn to live together, protecting their own interests as well as each other's, while sharing not only the love of their husband, but that of Hannah's son Samuel, who will become one of the great prophets of the Jewish people.

Bible, sex. love, betrayl, adultery, and history.......2007-05-16
This was a good book that, for me, started off slow but picked up when the conflicts REALLY kicked in!! Makes me in a strange sort of way, glad to see that these biblical icons had the same problems that I/we have. Samuel was no different and it was nice hearing about him and his mother and his attraction to an "off-limits" woman. I will definately be checking out this authors next novel.
A fine biblical "bodice ripper".......2007-05-05
The story of the birth of the prophet Samuel, but a brief snippet at the opening of the story that will focus first on the rise and fall of King Saul, and then the rise and foibles of King David, has long occupied a special place in the hearts of Bible lovers. The tale of Hannah, the childless woman pleading at the Temple contains all the hallmarks of a great biblical episode -- sparse prose, raw emotion, and deep humanity. No surprise then that an author chose to use these brief chapters as the basis of a novel of the relationship between Elkanah and his wives. Indeed readers are fortunate that Mrs. Etzioni-Halevy approaches the work with a deft pen, avoiding the excesses of "The Red Tent" and the two dimensional characters of "Queen Maker"
The Song of Hannah, with its often raw sexuality and emotions may offend some readers. Yet it is just such humanity that is at the heart of the Bible's eternal appeal; the characters are not paragons of myth but real complex people with all the strengths and flaws contained there in. Others may dislike the occasional anachronisms used by the author, transposing traditions likely post exile into the pre-monarchic period, but such choices are well within the rights of a writer. Moreover, this is not a piece of scholarship but a novel.
Provocative, engaging, and human, Eva Etzioni-Halevy has produced a fine and entertaining piece of biblical fiction, well worth the time for those who enjoy the genre.

Longtime readers of Anne Perry will be familiar with Inspector Thomas Pitt, the low-born London copper with a better-born wife, Charlotte. Set during the Victorian era, Perry's mysteries usually examine the dark underbelly of aristocratic life. Homosexuality, adultery, and pedophilia have all been subjects of her previous books; in Ashworth Hall she injects a new ingredient: politics.
Ashworth Hall is the name of an estate where, in the autumn of 1890, a highly secret meeting is being held to discuss Anglo-Irish relations. The "Irish Problem" soon takes a backseat to murder, however, and Inspector Pitt, who as the son of servants grew up on just such an estate, is called in to solve the case. While he investigates below-stairs, Charlotte gathers clues above. As usual, their collaboration is successful, both in crime-solving and as literature.
Book Description
When a group of powerful Irish Protestants and Catholics gather at a country house to discuss Irish home rule, contention is to be expected. But when the meeting's moderator, government bigwig Ainsley Greville, is found murdered in his bath, negotiations seem doomed. To make matters worse, it appears the late Greville may have led a less than savory personal life.
Unless Thomas Pitt and his wife, Charlotte, can root out the truth, simmering hatreds and passions may again explode in murder, the home rule movement may collapse, and civil war may destroy all of Ireland. . . .

Weakest so far.......2007-02-10
I love Anne Perry's books. For the most part, her writing keeps getting better and better, particularly the William Monk series. That being said, this novel left me feeling disgruntled and unsatisfied. The various Irish characters were confusing, some clues were not followed up on, and some balls were simply dropped. I suspect looming deadline-itis on this one.

This audio book is respresented here as 'Unabridged.' It is not. It is abridged. I know, I own a copy.
I have found this misrepresentation very often here on Amazon.com
The Pitts and the Irish Problem-one of Perry's lesser books.......2000-08-30
_Ashworth Hall_ is another of Anne Perry's long-running series of mysteries featuring Charlotte and Thomas Pitt. In this one, Perry deals with the "Irish Problem". The novel deals with a conference between two leading Catholics and two leading Protestants, in England at the title Hall, Charlotte's sister Emily's country home. A death threat aimed at the English diplomat heading the conference leads the government to send Pitt to the weekend meeting, incognito, with the excuse that Emily has simply invited her sister. Pitt fails utterly, as the diplomat is murdered, and in the course of the investigation, another man is also murdered. Pitt, Charlotte, and their longtime servant Gracie unravel the strings of the various murders, uncovering long-festering strands of the Irish Problem (especially as Gracie has a brief romance with an Irish Catholic), as well as typically sordid family details. This all plays out with the famous Parnell/O'Shea divorce case in the background, which case in fact lead to Parnell's discrediting as a serious factor, and thus possibly put off any "solution" to the "problem" for at least decades, if not, dare I say, sadly, for much longer still
I found this pretty unsatisfying. Much was very predictable. Perry's habit of telling, at endless length, what is motivating her characters, and what her characters are feeling, rather than showing, is really getting on my nerves. Also her constant repetition of the same themes of rich men committing callous adultery, their wives taking it more or less stoically, until something precipitates violence, realistic as it may be, is getting very stale. I guessed two of the villains pretty much right off: granted that Perry did pull one additional twist which surprised me. But all in all, this is one of the weakest of Perry's Charlotte and Thomas Pitt books. (Note that many of the earlier books are very enjoyable.)
Another solid whodunit along with historical atmosphere.......2000-07-26
This is the third Anne Perry novel I have read. They are all well crafted, intelligent cozy mysteries, along with an interesting portrayal of the culture and politics of Victorian England. This particular book revolves around a peace conference for Ireland which is being held at Ashworth Hall, hence the title. Ashworth Hall happens to be the home of the sister-in-law of Inspector (now Superintendent) Pitt, who is the hero of this series of Perry's novels. Moreover, the politician presiding over the conference has been the subject of death threats in the recent past. So Pitt is asked to attend the conference, without revealing his identity, as a security measure to prevent foul play.
Unfortunately, Pitt fails. Two murders are committed despite his efforts, terrifying both the guests and the sizable contingent of servants. We then have the usual collection of suspects and motives, and Pitt eventually sorts through all of the information to solve the mystery - with considerable help from his wife Charlotte and their maid Gracie.
It's a tightly written mystery, along with a convincing portrayal of Victorian mores and the unending hatreds in Ireland. It doesn't quite rise to the level of true literature, as Elizabeth George's and P. D. James's books often do, but it's a solid, high-quality production.
Not Anne Perry's Best.......2000-01-23
As a diehard Anne Perry fan, I was disappointed in Ashworth Hall. I couldn't stay with it. I don't know what went wrong! I have loved every other book she's written, and I've read all but the newest Thomas and Charlotte, and one Monk. Ashworth Hall didn't seem like an Anne Perry book at all.

Traitor's Gate
Someone in the Colonial Office is passing secrets to Germany about England's African strategy. While Police Superintendent Thomas Pitt investigates this matter of treason, he is quietly looking into the tragic "accidental" death of his childhood mentor, Sir Arthur Desmond. Pitt believes he was murdered, and that the crime is connected with the treachery in the government. He is making little progress, until a second murder reverberates through London.
In the small hours of a May morning, a Thames waterman finds the strangled body of an aristocratic society beauty floating near lonely Traitors Gate. Only then do hard-pressed Pitt and his clever wife, Charlotte, begin to untangle the threads of passion and intrigue, to see clearly the pattern of tragedy and frightening evil that Pitt must deal with, at the risk of his career--and his life.
Pentecost Alley
It is 1890. Two years after the unsolved spree of England's most notorious murderer, Jack the Ripper, London shudders at the discovery of a murdered prostitute in Whitechapel. Shock follows as an aspiring ambassador is implicated in the gruesome ritual murder--only to be cleared by Superintendent Thomas Pitt, whose efforts successfully sent the true killer to the gallows. But when another, chillingly similar, murder is committed, terrifying questions arise.
Ashworth Hall
When a group of powerful Irish Protestants and Catholics gather at a country house to discuss Irish home rule, contention is to be expected. But when the meeting's moderator, government bigwig Ainsley Greville, is found murdered in his bath, negotiations seem doomed. To make matters worse, it appears the late Greville may have led a less than savory personal life.
Unless Thomas Pitt and his wife, Charlotte, can root out the truth, simmering hatreds and passions may again explode in murder, the home rule movement may collapse, and civil war may destroy all of Ireland. . . .

A Companion to Eighteenth-Century Britain (Blackwell Companions to British History)
ASIN: 1405156791 |
Book Description
A Companion to Nineteenth-Century Britain presents 33 essays by expert scholars on all the major aspects of the political, social, economic, and cultural history of Britain during the late Georgian and Victorian eras. It makes sense of the fascinating new perspectives on this era that have been generated in recent years while not losing sight of broader, more enduring themes. Each essay both distils the current state of historical scholarship and assesses the directions that research is likely to take in future. All the contributions pay attention to the experiences of women as well as of men, and to regional and national variations across Britain and Ireland. Though engaged with cutting-edge theories, including postmodern and post-structuralist perspectives, the contributors avoid technical jargon and assume no prior expert knowledge. The volume is written in a clear and energetic manner, and illustrated with maps and charts where appropriate. Guides to further reading allow readers to follow chosen avenues of investigation with confidence.

Edgar Cayce Book.......2007-01-09
The services were flawless - everything arrived in great shape and timely.
My health bible.......2004-04-26
I own two copies of this book just so I am sure to always have one and can loan one to a friend. I trust the remedies of Edgar Cayce and have used them for over 20 years. I have lots of other books on health, including professional ones for doctors. This book includes all the basic info on diet, exercise and daily living to keep healthy. Having read many books about Edgar Cayce and spent many years experiencing the truth of his work I have great respect for him and trust his suggestions.
A few Almonds a Day Keeps the Doctor Away?.......2004-04-24
I've owned this book for several years. Although I can't say that I practiced all of the treatments diligently or with regularity, it's surprising how much of the health and diagnoses information given by psychic Edgar Cayce in the 19th and 20th centuries, coincides with modern-day medical advice.
I'd like to begin this review with a disclaimer. Please don't follow the advice in this book without being under the care or supervision of a doctor. In fact, Reilly suggests this before undergoing any of the treatments in the book.
Although we now know most of the dietary advice that Cayce gave is now common knowledge, you have to remember that Cayce was born on March 18, 1877. He started readings at the age of 21 when he was afflicted with a paralysis of the throat, and continued his readings up until the time of his death in Virginia Beach,VA on January 3, 1945. Much of the advice we take for granted now was not known by dieticians, doctors, and the like when Cayce first gave predictions. Harold Reilly was the man who practiced many of Cayce's treatments. He's treated stars like Mickey Rooney, Robert Frost,Gloria Swanson, Bob Hope, Mae West, Jessica Tandy...among others.
Cayce's dietary advice is as follows. For example, Cayce cautions against eating red meats, and instead encourages people to eat healthy portions of fish, fowl, and lamb. Also, pork is a no-no, except for crisp bacon. And encourages people to eat one raw salad a day - - composed of 4 plants that grow above ground to one below. Fried foods, starches and the like are to be avoided. Surprisingly almonds are the stand out as the miracle drug. Cayce says they're a great disease-prevention tool because of it's combination of phosophorus and calcium.
The advice is amazingly detailed. It discusses how certain foods can affect the body's acidity/akalinity that can cause or prevent disease. There is also a section in the book which advises which "food combinations" are better-digested in your stomach than others.
This book covers naturopathic treatments for a variety of ails from the teeth/hair down to the blood/toes/bones. According to Cayce's advice, eliminations are also essential to curing diseases. Eliminations are carried out through osteopathic adjustments, massage(with peanut oil, olive oil, etc;), colonics, packs(usually composed of cold pressed castor oil or other enemas, baths (steam, sitz, etc;). Also there are sections, with pictures, on exercise and massage. There are also internal cleansing diets (such as the apple diet) which are discussed. Reilly's book even has a small section on meditation.
The massage is interesting because it coincides with what some Hindus do daily - - the self-abhyanga(abeeyanga) - - or daily massage to satisfy their doshas. Usually done with sesame seed oil or some other kinds of oil, right before bathing.
My only quip with the book was the way it was organized was sometimes confusing. If Reilly gave advice on certain exercises, it was difficult to flip through another part of the book to find them. The indexes were helpful to find them - - but sometimes - - not always. Then again, I do possess an old old copy of Reilly's book. Hopefully, there will be an updated versionother edition that makes it easier to find some of the examples he discusses in the book.
I know there are a few skeptics out there. And if you're going to use this book - - please do so under medical supervision.
An apple a day can keep the doctor away........1999-04-19
This book is a good shortcut past trial and error. It's a bit depressing that a lot of the foods, activities and attitudes we grow up with arn't good for us but it's nice to know what they are. With knowlage one has the ability to plan and re-invent ways to live better.
If you would like to know the effects of your actons, attitudes or foods, this book is for you.
