Book Description
For thousands of years, man has sailed into battle, sailed for rumored wealth, and sailed for pure adventure. And for nearly as long, stories about the sea have entertained, intrigued, and inspired readers. The Greatest Sailing Stories Ever Told brings together some of the most compelling writing of the millennium. Here is Peter Goss's wrenching narrative of incredible courage in the world's most desolate ocean; Ernest Shackleton's understated and awesome account of one of the most daring small-boat journeys ever taken, where failure meant certain death for his long-suffering crew. But sailing is much more than headlong dashes into roaring seas. You'll also find William F. Buckley Jr. on idyllic cruising; James Thurber on the arcane and often impenetrable language of sailors; the legendary Joshua Slocum on sailing alone around the world.
The Greatest Sailing Stories Ever Told is a treasure trove: tears, adrenaline, laughter, and adventure abound. With contributions from:
- James Thurber -William F. Buckley Jr. - Ann Davison - Sterling Hayden - Ernest Shackleton - Tristan Jones - Samuel Eliot Morrison - Joshua Slocum - E. B. White - C. S. Forester - Cleveland Amory - Weston Martyr - Peter Goss - David Kasanof

Enjoyable assortment of stories.......2007-02-17
As a one-time sailor, I was taken back to the "old days" by many of these stories. Some are humourous, some awe inspiring, but I think most would be enjoyed by mariner and landlubber alike.
A mish mash of good and not so good stories.......2007-01-11
Seems like the selection proccess of stopries was more what the publisher could get (probably cheap) than a good selection of really good stories. Sure there are some good ones (Like en excerpt from Pete Goss's book) but the continuity in the book totally lacks - and I haven't even finished the book yet after 4 months - and I love sailing books - normally cannot put them down if they are well written.
A good addition........2005-12-12
A broad selection of sea stories -- you have probably already read some of them -- combined as a collection of short stories. An enjoyable addition to an onboard library.
enjoyable short stories.......2005-10-16
a nice intro to many different authors. Very enjoyable. The greatest?
An Enjoyable Read on a Cold Winter's Night .......2005-08-24
I do not know if these 27 stories are the greatest, but they are certainly great. Caswell picked a wonderful cross section of sailing stories spanning time and space. These stories will be worth reading and re-reading decades from now. Classics.

Before she can be talked down peacefully, Sylvia crashes to the ground, right at the feet of Joan's son Andrew, and it's clearly no accident.

A fun great cozy mystery to read.......2006-09-12
Joan Spencer is the manager of the local civic symphony. Right before the big children's concert, Sylvia, who plays first violin in the symphony, tells Joan that she can't perform in the big concert because she'll be up a tree to protest a construction project that will remove a lot of trees.
Joan's son Andrew assists in taking food and other items to Sylvia on a regular basis. Joan ends up helping him now and then. One day when they are delivering food to her, Sylvia comes crashing out of the tree. After her seventy-foot fall, she is unconscious and later dies.
Andrew takes her place in the tree. Joan and her new husband Fred, a detective lieutenant in the local police force, can't talk him out of it. They aren't happy but hope he'll come to his senses soon.
After Joan discovers evidence that Sylvia was murdered, she fears for Andrew's life. Plus she's still searching for a replacement first violinist for the concert and dealing with other issues in the symphony as well as at the senior center where she works.
Can the killer be found and caught without Andrew being harmed? And can Joan stay unharmed as well?
I had never read anything by this author before. I really enjoyed this book and hope to read others by her. Joan is such a great character. Her husband Fred, while he's a cop and gone a lot, he is also a great guy and portrayed well. I liked all the symphony members as well. Some of them were obnoxious, but they were supposed to be that way. The small town setting was wonderfully done. I highly recommend this book!
The Pickle Gets Tighter and Tighter in this Fun Mystery.......2005-12-27
Joan Spencer, manager of the Oliver Civic Symphony is in a pickle, because Sylvia Purcell, one of her violinists is staging a sit-in in a tree to protest the Walcher Construction Project. And the pickle starts closing when she falls out of the tree and is dies at Joan's son's feet. Unknown to Joan, Andrew had been giving food to the protesters, however now that Sylvia has met her maker, Andrew decides to take her spot in the tree.
Police Lieutenant Fred Lundquist is investigating the murder. He also happens to be Joan's husband and Andrew's step-father and this makes the pickle even worse, because it looks like Andrew is the prime suspect. So now Joan is turned into an unofficial investigator as she has to clear Andrew of the crime and she is desperate to find the killer, just in case Andrew is next on the list, as it appears that somebody is not happy with the demonstrators and their sit-in.
This is a fun mystery that you'll just love to read as you worry along with as Joan works to clear Andrew, but only seems to find evidence that makes him look more and more guilty. Although this is the sixth book in the series, it's the first one I've read and I had no problem understanding the characters and their relationships with each other. I really liked this book and I think you will too.
Dearth Climbs a Tree-a great 1 or 2-evening read........2005-10-10
An excellent small town mystery story, with believable characters and a plot that keeps you guessing throughout the narrative. Details of the small town setting ring true and add to the charm of the story.
fine who-done-it .......2005-08-26
Joan Spencer, manager of the Oliver Civic Symphony in Oliver, Indiana, is concerned that her first violinist Sylvia Purcell is sitting in a tree to obstruct Walcher Construction from a project that she feels is hostile to the environment. Joan's son Andrew, a junior at Oliver College, is one of those providing food to the protester.
When Sylvia falls out of the tree and dies at Andrew's feet it is discovered that she was murdered. Joan's husband police Lieutenant Fred Lundquist knows he must stay out of the official investigation because his stepson is a prime suspect, but that does not keep Joan from sleuthing as she sees others with motives like Tom Walcher who needed the project to remain on schedule or even the growing militant The Erath Freedom Fighters. One thing she believes is that her son would not harm Sylvia, who he recently met at college and admired.
Sara Hoskinson Frommer provides a fabulous amateur sleuth starring an intrepid woman who believes in her son's innocence in spite of the evidence, much of which she finds that affirms his guilt. The story line is action-packed as Joan ignores her spouse and conducts an investigation into who killed her first violinist only to find a lot of folks with motives and opportunity. Readers will enjoy this fine who-done-it because the heroine makes her inquiries seem desperately real especially as one clue after another enhances the case against her son.

Book Description
Who has dared to desecrate the sacred place of embalming with a murdered corpse? Pharaoh Tutankhamun orders Lord Meren, his chief investigator, to find out quickly, before power-mad priests use the incident to undermine his royal authority.
Everyone is a suspect, for the body belongs to the notorious scribe Hormin, hated by all who knew him. However, Lord Meren is no mere courtier but the Eyes and Ears of the living god. In the terrifying Place of Anubis, where unquiet spirits dwell, in the sunstruck city of Thebes, where Hormin's sons and his beautiful concubine plot, and in the royal court, where intrigues abound, Lord Meren hunts his quarry, peeling back the secrets of nobles and slaves in his quest for the truth. But more important by far is Meren's responsibility to protect the young Pharaoh from his enemies -- who are no farther away than the length of a dagger . . . .
"This exceptional debut melds ancient Egyptian religious beliefs and practices with court intrigue to produce a riveting mystery." -- Publishers Weekly

an ineresting way to learn a bit of background history.......2007-01-04
Our group made a visit to the King Tut exhibit at the Museum of natural History in Chicago and several thought that this was a good way to get the feel of the times.
Murder among mummies.......2004-08-24
Robinson's first mystery features Lord Meren, eyes and ears of the Pharoah Tutankhamun in ancient Egypt. A scribe, much disliked for his bullying habits, has been murdered in the Place of Anubis, the embalming sheds where the dead are prepared for rebirth.
Meren and his assistant, his adopted son, Kysen, scour the home of the scribe, his workplace, and the temples and holy places for clues to a crime with dire implications. Kysen visits the home of his battered youth, Meren balances the political against the merely criminal.
Robinson's pacing is a little too careful and measured, but she offers a wealth of colorful views into Egyptian life and political atmosphere and her characters are appealing.
Intrigue in the court of Pharaoh.......2004-05-09
Lord Meren is the typical detective hero, steadfast, honest, and with his faults though they seem minimal. The setting in ancient Egypt gives the novel (and the series) a rich historical background that the author puts to very good use. In the first novel you hit the ground running. Much has occurred in Lord Meren's life and you wonder if you have missed a novel or two in the series. You haven't.
Each novel in the series has a specific mystery to be solved, but they will be part of a larger mystery that runs through the series. Robinson does shade in the background of life with a sure hand and does not simply dwell in the pharaoh's court. She takes you along to see a bit of the day-to-day life and then for an occasional trip to the darker recesses of the many temples.
If you want a sense of life in Egypt in the time of Pharaoh, you should find this a rewarding read. If you want a good mystery, she serves it up with the standard fare of red herrings, dead ends, and other stylistic reglia demanded by the genre.
As with most series, try to read them in the order they were written, as each supports the next as the plot progresses.
Wow! What a story!.......2003-06-21
This was the first real historical mystery I have ever read and I must say that I am now hooked! I also liked the fact that Ms. Robinson dosen't kill us with the historical facts of the crazy Pharaoh Akhenaten and his "untimely death" and the struggle for controll with Tut. She does a wonderfull job of keeping these facts in the story but at the same time moves on with the mystery. Kept me guessing till the end.
Ancient Egypt, Murder & Fascinating Characters.......2001-07-27
Robinson weaves a historically detailed, well-paced murder mystery set in and around the ancient city of Thebes. Robinsonýs investigator is Lord Meren, the ýeyes and earsý of the boy-king, Tutankhamun. Meren is an accessible, deliberate man who, through his observations and actions, reveals the ancient beliefs and ethos of Egypt. Merenýs world is peopled with historical and fictional entities that come to life in the pages of these books. This is not the most tightly plotted mystery, but Robinson's development of the characters and environs of the ancient world, makes it an absolutely delicious read.
Book Description
Gary Gygax, father of fantasy roleplaying and the co-creator of the Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game, weaves a fantastic tale of warring wizards that spans the world from the pyramids of ancient Egypt to the mist-shrouded towns of medieval England. Someone is murdering the world's most powerful sorcerers, and the trail of blood leads straight to Anubis, the solemn god known by most as the Master of Jackals. Can Magister Setne Inhetep, personal philosopher-wizard to the Pharaoh, reach the distant kingdom of Avillonia and put an end to the Anubis Murders, or will he be claimed as the latest victim?

FROM THE BACK OF THE BOOK:.......2006-01-22
A JACKAL OF ALL TRADES- A MASTER OF EVIL. Magister Setne Inhetep was badly in need of a vacation. That's why the great Egyptian wizard-priest was less than thrilled to see the three high mages before him telling him of the potent magic and heinous murders that were spreading like mad through the most elite circles of distant Avillonia. The only connection between these horrible acts of violent magic is a stauette of the ancient Egyptian god Anubis- known to all as the Master of Jackals. It is up to Setne and his beautiful bodyguard, Rachelle, to unmask the true killer behind these gruesome murders and clear the name of their revered god. As he wanders through an underground maze of secret Egyptian cults and double-crosses, Setne soon finds himself enmeshed in a diabolical web of international blackmail and trickery, fueled by a powerful, evil magic possibly more potent than his own. And when Rachelle is kidnapped and Setne is accused of treason, it will take every bit of sorcery and cunning the sardonic Egyptian has to save their lives... and to keep the world from plunging into a darkness beyond imagining...
Typical Gygax.......2005-09-20
I have always enjoyed Gary Gygax's writing. This is a so so outing by him. Set in a short lived universe he created and was sued over, this book is essentially a murder mystery in a fantasy setting. The characters are a but luke warm, and the writing is decent, but the ending is bad and leaves thing unresolved. Mr. Gygax wrote two more novels in this series before the lawsuit put a halt to any further work.
Really intricate plot but the ending could have been better........1999-04-30
Gary Gygax weaves a very interesting and intricate plot of magick and intrigue. The book kept you guessing until near the very end. However, the ending left something to be desired. It abruptly changes gears and leaves issues unresolved.

Overall a great resource.......2007-09-04
This is a great recipe book for those a little intimidated by feeding their new eater but also wanting food to be wholesome, nutritious, adventuresome, and fun. The recipes have made me think of new combinations or add a little spice here and there that I might not have otherwise. The only shortcoming is mixing some of the one year old recipes with those of 9 months up to 1 year, which means the recipes with milk (and eggs depending upon your pediatrician's advice) might not really be suitable for a while longer. It's a bit confusing and limits your options in that age range. I am definitely ready to introduce more things to my daughter within her current repertoire and need a few more hints for the next couple of months. I'll check around elsewhere for those, but this is a great book to have on hand nonetheless.
Harder.......2007-08-23
This book has harder recipes and if I would have gotten this book by itself it would have been a turnoff to making my own baby food.
Great for baby, excellent for children!.......2007-08-16
The book starts out with explanations of organic versus non. Then into baby recipes and finally ones for toddlers. Great uses of a large variety of fruits and vegetables. A must have for your bookshelf!
good baby's first cookbook .......2007-08-09
I bought this to learn how to make food for my first baby. I previewed many others. It's a great book with lots of suggestions for different foods and combinations to feed. It gives very detailed directions for cooking the foods either on the stove top or in the microwave for every recipe. This would be helpful for someone who does not cook a lot, though I find myself just giving the baby whatever we have on hand and cooking it or mashing very simply. I think the best thing about this book is the guidlines for what to feed and when. Also which foods to avoid at what ages. I am sure I will use it more as he gets older and starts to eat more combos of food. Very user friendly book with lots of tips throughout. All in all a good first baby cook book.
my boy loves it! the food is great!.......2007-08-08
great recipes for all age ranges as well as good dietary info. as you get further into the book, some of the recipes are so good that my wife and i find ourselves snacking on the muffins and cakes that come from the book. i would highly recommend this if you like to cook and want to make food for you child that is better than the boring fare of other cookbooks.
Customer Reviews:
Very useful!.......1999-09-04
I had bought this book originally because i have skin problems and i was looking for a cure. Although this book covers just about your whole well-being, i must comment that it did help my skin tremendously. This book pointed out and that i had to start w/ my health and to use home-made natural products. I constantly refer back to this book for detailed information that it provides.

Review by Yogen Kushi, Non-Credo.......2005-07-26
There is a new wave of professional macrobiotic chefs courageously pioneering the frontiers of macrobiotic cuisine. Led by the likes of this book's author, Aine McAteer, as well as Christina Pirello in Pennsylvania, Lee and Darlene Gross in California, and Patricio Garcia de Paredes in Japan, these trailblazing chefs are setting new standards for macrobiotic cooking by inventing dishes that are stunningly beautiful, refreshingly innovative, incredibly delicious, appealing to both macros and non-macros alike, and that still manage to maintain balance and healthfulness.
I had the good fortune to meet Aine in person last year at the Fortunate Blessings Foundation's "The Passage." While she is small in stature, Aine exudes an aura of powerful presence and her warm demeanour and graceful charm will make anyone feel at home. It was quickly apparent that these same qualities were infused in every meal she created during the week. To taste Aine's cooking is to discover the very best of contemporary macrobiotic cuisine - world-class dishes that could grace the tables of the most demanding clientele.
Aine's employment record reads like a "Who's Who" of the entertainment industry - she has been a personal chef to Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, Pierce Brosnan, "The Simpsons" creator Matt Groening, and Robert Redford. Redford's accolades subtly grace the cover of the book: "Aine has distilled the creativity and love that goes into preparing her food into the recipes that she shares with us in this wonderful book."
Aine begins the book with a personable introduction, explaining her discovery of macrobiotics and Ayurveda and how it shaped her dietary approach. "I simply believe you are what you eat, and that if nutrient-rich whole foods form the basis of your diet, you will be healthy inside and out," she writes. She explains how her origins in Ireland and travels around the world have influenced her culinary creations, such as her "Mexican Bean Pie," "Pineapple Ginger Ice Dream," a macrobiotic "Shepherd's Pie," "Seductive Salmon with Rainbow Salsa," "Pumpkin Coconut Bisque," and "Hawaiian Sunset Soup."
The recipes in this book are organized into several sections, including "Food for One," "Food for Love," "Healthy Kids," "Picnic & Finger Foods," and "Festive Foods." By addressing these different considerations of the cook, Recipes to Nurture offers dishes for many types of situations and makes it a cookbook to return to for any occasion.
Recipes to Nurture is the most beautifully designed cookbook I have ever come across. Bobbi Fabian's photographs are alluring and seductive, and the elegant typography throughout the book quietly enhances its high-class appeal. It is no surprise that with such delectable recipes and riveting imagery this book won the prestigious Gourmand World Cookbook award of "Best Health and Nutrition Cookbook in the World" last year in Barcelona.
Macrobiotics is continually dogged by its popular characterization as an ascetic approach for only dietary extremists and the terminally ill. Recipes to Nurture challenges this stigma through its broad variety of mouthwater dishes that can appeal to anyone. "For many people, the idea of `healthy food' doesn't exactly conjure up images of sensual delights," Aine writes in her introduction, "It's my mission in this book to dispel that myth." n|c

Buy this book!!!.......2005-02-16
This book is my cooking bible!! I have made several recipes in the book and every single one has been really easy and absolutely delicious. Not only that, but the recipes make cooking joyful again!
The recipes follow macrobiotic principles but, unlike other macrobiotic cookbooks, it contains easy to find ingredients that we've all heard of. The recipes are dairy, meat and sugar free. Yet every recipe is scrumptious (I don't know how she does it). The other good thing is that recipes contain a list of alternatives - very useful if you are intolerant to wheat or don't like a certain food.
Invest the money in this cookbook. It is well worth it!
