I sent the book to several of my friends, one of whom wrote back on May 13th, 2007 with news that says it all.
"I just had to let you know how grateful I am to you for sending me the book The Great Silent Grandmother Gathering this spring. That book was the focal point for our United Methodist Women's program yesterday on Inspirational Women of Faith. Jenny **** read the story one section at a time and we had a group of super women be the grandmothers et al in the story. What a powerful book and how it captured everyone's imagination. (Since I am program chair, I got to have a bit of a say as to the program, but none was needed since everyone on the program committee was so enthralled with the book.)

Eugene has a number of places where people will be gathering in just one hour. Many of us who are from our church at 1 p.m. will meet at the Charnel-Mulligan Park just a couple blocks south of the church and stand for peace for 5 minutes. The standingwomen web site lists places all over the world where women will be congregating for five minutes for peace! Thank you a hundred times over for sending me the book. It has inspired 50 women who attended the program yesterday, plus Debbie, our senior pastor, invited the congregation to join her at the park this afternoon. Will let you know more later.

I bought six copies of this book and gave one to each of my five daughters and one daughter-in-law. I found the story to be most inspiring and hope-filled. We women one day will unite and do something as simple and effective as these grandmothers did. One day we women will discover our power and act upon it for the good of ALL.
I thought the author's story of how she came to write this book was very well presented. I felt highly encouraged by her words. I personally thank her for this creation.

This book brought tears to my eyes. It touched me so deeply that I was moved to read it aloud at a gathering of 100 + people. Many people came up to me later expressing their appreciation of the story's simple beauty. I bought several dozen copies and sent them to women around the world -- a simple gift of appreciation for their daily dedication to peace. This book is a movement in itself.

Living in a fantasy world.......2006-03-27

I received this as a gift because I am an older retired woman and it was assumed that I might appreciate this book. That assumption was incorrect.

You would hope that all older women would have learned something in their many years but clearly many have learned nothing. Too many older women have no understanding of men, of testosterone, of aggression or of violence. I grew up with multiple brotehrs and multiple sons. They would laugh out loud at this book if you could get any of them to read it (you couldn't).Sharon Mehdi, like many other older women dedicated to peace, hasn't the slighest idea what causes men to be aggressive.

This book will certainly provide comfort to other women of like mind but it will be ignored by men or anyone who has access to real power in the US. Mehdi lives in a fantasy world and if you live in the same world you should enjoy this book. But if you live in the real world, this is a waste of your time.

Perhaps Mehdi would like to go stand silently in a public square in North Korea and see what impact it has? I didn't think so...

Gritty and Explosive.......2007-09-28

Don't let this book pass you by. If you are into the fast paced yet creative and classic styles of writing, this book is for you. This is possibly the best of the Swagger series and Mr. Hunter's writing in general. Its a excellent example of the Gritty life of a hard times, fist pounding, gun toting, ex-marine who knows the business end of a gun. Throw in a medal of honor and a bit of Judo, and you have a man's man, ready to clean house on the bad Guys. However he is not without his demons, and Hunter skillfully works in this subplot with some surprises at the end. I would compare this book to "Shibumi" by Travanian. Which is a book you keep on the shelf for another read. Its a classic!

Earl Swaggert Mystery Early Years Solved........2007-08-23

Steven Hunter undresses Earl Swaggert for us, and shows his soft side, his weak side, and now we know why he is so hard, dependable and honest. Excitement begins with page one, and takes the reader through the tameing of an out of control, sin city, where gambling, prostitution, and drugs are king. The courage of good, well intended men put their lives on the line to make Arkansas a better place to live. Conflick abounds. A good read.

Too good to be true.......2006-09-15

No one shoots straighter, hits harder, thinks clearer, talks plainer or acts manlier than Earl Swagger. By page 200, I wanted him dead. I've been a Hunter fan since I started reading his movie reviews in the Washington Post. And I think Dirty White Boys is a classic; I still have fond memories of reading it in a coin-laundry on the upper peninsula of Michigan on a very cold night. But Hot Springs got on my nerves. Writers are supposed to sympathize with their characters. Hunter goes way too far. His portrayal of Marine war hero turned lawman Earl Swagger plunges into hero worship. Earl can't just be the best shot among the lawmen assembled to bust up an Arkansas gambling syndicate; he has to be the best boxer too. No doubt, he's also a stallion in the sack. Sometimes Hunter veers disturbingly close to what seems like self-loathing for an East Coast movie critic and writer: Almost every educated, non-Southern character is a coward or a schemer, simply not worthy to stand in the presence of manly southern man Swagger. Sensing a potential chink in the armor, Hunter implausibly grants Swagger - a rural Arkansas lawman in 1946 - the enlightened racial outlook of a Freedom Rider. I started to think that Hunter and Swagger deserve the kind of treatment Mark Twain dished out to James Fenimore Cooper and Natty Bumppo. But heck, Hunter sure can tell a story. He gradually won me over again with entertaining villains and sharp storytelling. Is anyone better at keeping a story moving by cutting between different points of view? Plus, he works hard here to get the period detail (Sin City, Arkansas 1946) just right. There are even flashes of humor (something I never noticed before in a Hunter thriller), including a bit involving a clown. Bonus: a nice twist at the end for those who've read another Swagger tale, Black Light.

It's Swagger time again!.......2006-08-02

Stephen Hunter is at his best when he writes about Swagger. So why change a winning "team"?
This time it's Earl Swagger and the story is based in 1946. Funny as it seems this time it's Earl who (also) has to deal with his father's fate - but this is not the main subject of the book.
Luckily Hunter did not copy the plot of his earlier books but created a completely different kind of mood and storyline. "Hot Springs" is not as complex as "Point of Impact" or "Time to Hunt" but straightforward, fast paced action with surprising twists and angles. This book sure is well worth reading.

Anybody who is not acquainted to Stephen Hunter books so far should read this one (and "Pale Horse Coming") before he starts reading the other Swagger books since this book is a prequel to the life of Bob Lee Swagger and explains why he became the man he is.

Haven't read Stephen Hunter before so I didn't start this book with any pre-conceived ideas but I found the novel pretty good.

Earl Swagger is a mans man. War hero, tough guy. Full of inner demons and maybe a death wish.

Set in 1946, Swagger is the leader of a group of covert law enforcement officers intent on cleaning up the town of Hot Springs from casinos.

The novel deals with the characters, the time and the place very well.

An extraordinarily written book.......2005-06-09

John Nichols is perhaps one of our best contemporary writers, and it's a shame that he isn't more prolific and more accessible to the general reading public. He uses language like poetry, and his characters jump off the pages with their idiosyncracies. There are good guys, bad guys, and everything in between. Here, Nichols explores the subject that seems to most interests him, namely, the cultural destruction of a small southwestern town due to "progress," and the never ending quest for more riches. He never pretends that life was so great before, or that gentrification is always bad, but Nichols certainly wants the reader to understand the unfortunate consequences of converting a small town into a vacation spot on the lives of those who live there.

It is not easy to read "The Magic Journey." The plot tends to drag in places, and, Nichols liberally sprinkles his prose with Spanish, which, unfortunately, I don't speak. Nichols also tends to show off his prodigious knowledge concerning the southwest and its environment, and is somewhat heavy handed in his anti-progress stance. However, the writing is so beautiful that it is well worth it, even if you can read only a few pages of the book each day. Eventually, I intend to read the other two books in the trilogy.

Reaching Back to Roots.......2005-05-20

This book gives a true meaning of going back to your roots especially when you can make a connection with the characters. This book is thought provoking in the sense that one can see the authors insight of the past, and apply it in the current debacle of our current society and its quest for wealth, even in the face of destroying culture and people in the process. The genious prose that sets John Nichols apart is clear and being able to bring to life a culture and people lost to time and greed is amazing.

About The Magic Journey.......2004-01-10

Apparently this is the second book in a trilogy, something I failed to notice until I'd finished. It stands alone quite nicely and I suspect the other two would do the same.

It is loosly the story of a forgotten southwestern town named Chamisaville during the Great Depression, and how it went from being small and self sufficiant to being a much larger "better" modern city thanks to a rattletrap bus loaded high with dynamite exploding and leaving a miracle behind that a few quick thinkers were quick to exploit.

It is also the story of April, the daughter of one of the foremost of those interested in the Betterment of Chamisaville. Vibrant, intoxicatingly beautiful, full of life and enthusiasim for everything but a tendancy to jump from one thing to another that leaves those in her wake feeling rather lost.

It is a story of how important fighting againt progress for the sake of progress is, and how futile... The fight that is going to be lost eventually, but you desperately struggle to hold off the inevitable as long as possible.

The writing style is such that though its about the same length of the books I normally read, I think it took me about twice as long to get through. Some of this was because I found myself needing to take breaks to think about what was happening, some of it was that it was not dry, but... the style itself conjured images of a forgotten town that was happier being forgotton.

Had you asked me at the beginning if I liked it, the answer would have been no. Half way through I couldn't have said, and by the end I thought it was worth having read, if not one I would be likely to read again. Now that its been a few days I would have to say it is not one that I would likely read again soon, but it is entirely possible that at some point in the future I may pick it back up and see what I can find on a second reading.

The Magic Didn't Last.......2000-11-26

Owl needs a better editor. The typos in the book are extremely distracting and very large in number. Although I was interested in the plot, I tired of the pathetic characters long before the end. Keep a Spanish dictionary handy if you are not bilingual. (This is another reason that I did not enjoy the book.)

Possibly the best book I have ever read!.......1998-08-22

This novel of the cultural, political, and economic evolution of northern New Mexico, starts with the "miraculous" explosion of a bus filled with dynamite in the 1930's and documents the devastating effect that discovery by the outside world has on separate but intertwined white, Hispanic, and Indian cultures in a small mountain town. This evolution is described through the eyes of strong, well developed characters that sparkle with complexity and humor. Nichols paints a picture of cultural and environmental destruction with dry humor and stark narrative. For anyone wishing to understand the recent history of the most beautiful portions of New Mexico, a must read.

(1)Excitement At The... Hot Springs?!: Cute little Hazel wins a trip to go to some Hot Springs Resort, and brings along Granpa, Pikachu, Jigglypuff, and Clefairy. While inside the Hot Springs, Granpa resorts to his perverted ways and peers in on Hazel while she's bathing, but luckily Pikachu ends up stopping the sicko, with 'shocking' results. Unfortunately that distraction causes a Ditto to sneak in without notice, causing a whole lot of confusion...
(2)Valentine Heartbeats: A little story about Clefairy and Pikachu and valentine's day. Crazy hijinks are to unfold later...
(3)Bonus Bonus 1 'Yumi Tsukirino's Road To Becoming A Pokemon Master': The artist and creator of this manga answers some fan questions about the manga and the Pokemon RPG.

Truly Comforting Book.......2007-07-01

This is the first pregnancy book I read that really helped me understand and feel comforted about my pregnancy.

Lots of other books have obvious agendas, including trying to convince you to have a hospital or home birth. Other books read more like a medical text book. After reading those kinds of books, I was frustrated and stressed out about the pregancy.

This book reads like a talk with a best friend or family member who really wants to help you. She gives great advice about how to take care of yourself and your baby as well as real talk about the different things that may or may not happen during the birth.

Forget the "other girlfriend's" advice about shaving your legs or painting your toenails...Karen Salt offers REAL, supportive, thoughtful, and informative advice for the mother-to-be.
