In a 1930s Dominican Republic village, the scream of a woman in labor rings out like the shot heard around Hispaniola. Every detail of the birth scene--the balance of power between the middle-aged Señora and her Haitian maid, the babies' skin color, not to mention which child is to survive--reverberates throughout Edwidge Danticat's Farming of Bones. In fact, rather than a celebration of fecundity, the unexpected double delivery gels into a metaphor for the military-sponsored mass murder of Haitian emigrants. As the Señora's doctor explains: "Many of us start out as twins in the belly and do away with the other."

But Danticat's powerful second novel is far from a currently modish victimization saga, and can hold its own with such modern classics as One Hundred Years of Solitude and The Color Purple. Its watchful narrator, the Señora's shy Haitian housemaid, describes herself as "one of those sea stones that sucks its colors inside and loses its translucence once it's taken out into the sun." An astute observer of human character, Amabelle Désir is also a conduit for the author's tart, poetic prose. Her lover, Sebastian, has "arms as wide as one of my bare thighs," while the Señora's complicit officer husband is "still shorter than the average man, even in his military boots."

The orphaned Amabelle comes to assume almost messianic proportions, but she is entirely fictional, as is the town of Alegría where the tale begins. The genocide and exodus, however, are factual. Indeed, the atrocities committed by Dominican president Rafael Trujillo's army back in 1937 rival those of Duvalier's Touton Macoutes. History has rendered Trujillo's carnage much less visible than Duvalier's, but no less painful. As Amabelle's father once told her, "Misery won't touch you gentle. It always leaves its thumbprints on you; sometimes it leaves them for others to see, sometimes for nobody but you to know of." Thanks to Danticat's stellar novel, the world will now know. --Jean Lenihan

Book Description

From the bestselling author of Breath, Eyes, Memory, a passionate and profound novel of two lovers struggling against political violence

The Farming of Bones begins in 1937 in a village on the Dominican side of the river that separates the country from Haiti. Amabelle Desir, Haitian-born and a faithful maidservant to the Dominican family that took her in when she was orphaned, and her lover Sebastien, an itinerant sugarcane cutter, decide they will marry and return to Haiti at the end of the cane season. However, hostilities toward Haitian laborers find a vitriolic spokesman in the ultra-nationalist Generalissimo Trujillo who calls for an ethnic cleansing of his Spanish-speaking country. As rumors of Haitian persecution become fact, as anxiety turns to terror, Amabelle and Sebastien's dreams are leveled to the most basic human desire: to endure. Based on a little-known historical event, this extraordinarily moving novel memorializes the forgotten victims of nationalist madness and the deeply felt passion and grief of its survivors.

"A remarkable new novel . . . Danticat writes in wonderful, evocative prose, and she is especially adept at treading the path between oppression and grace. At times, it's a particularly painful path, but, always, a compelling one." --The Boston Sunday Globe

"[With] hallucinatory vigor and a sense of mission . . . Danticat capably evokes the shock with which a small personal world is disrupted by military mayhem . . . The Farming of Bones offers ample confirmation of Edwidge Danticat's considerable talents." --The New York Times Book Review

"It's a testament to her talent that the novel, while almost unbearably sad, is still a joy to read." --Newsweek

This was the first book I read from this author and I can tell you, it will not be the last. The writing is amazing. This author has an amazing gift with imagery! She will make you see (and feel) what she is writing about as if you are there in the story. It simply took my breath away! A must read. Tears came from my eyes as I read the last few lines in the book. The story captivated me.

5 out of 5 stars "The Farming of Bones" is a chronological work of art. .......2006-12-12

Danticat moves beyond the stream of consciousness of "Krick Krack" and takes us on a voyage to the Dominican Republic and opens our hearts to the drama of a terrifyingly real era of hatred personified. Moving away from the quiet life of a plantation type existence.

The novel lands us in a holocaust situation where the host country becomes murderous and ravenous. The exciting adventure builds from a quiet from a pastoral love story into a fight for survival of Annabelle, the main character, who will be caught in your mind for days afterwards. Sebastien and Annabelle make an adoring couple, even though they are so young. Danticat masterfully evokes the atmosphere of hatred and terror of the massacre of Haitians by Dominicans through the eyes of Amabelle, who at the same time have only a few memories of her childhood and is incredibly uncertain future.

I thought this book was an excellent representation of how life was treated back in 1937 in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Not only was this a pure love story, but it was so factual and real. Danticat does an excellent job with her writing this novel, and deserves an applause. This book was touching and gripping at the same time. As a Haitian American I have always had an interest in understanding the history and problems which exist and have existed in Haiti, but in reading several texts I often find that the language of the genre is often uninteresting. For me Danticat changes that, she takes a historical event in Haitian history and structures it magnificently through the eyes of her young female character. I am glad that there is someone like Ms. Danticat in the literary world to help young Haitians like myself gain a better understanding of Haiti and its culture.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read! A Beautiful Book!.......2006-10-13

A beautiful book inside and out, I donated my copy to my school library where I work. I think this book about the life in Hispaniola or Haiti and Dominican Republic from the Haitian author's point of view is done poetically. If you have any interest in reading about the life and times in Haiti, this book should be on your must read list. It is one of those books that you don't forget about easily. You remember the story, the plot, the characters, and the crisis in Haiti at the time. Now with Haitian immigrants in our country, the problems are still there and we must not forget them too. This book is a beautiful piece of work that should be read in the classroom.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic/Horrific story.......2006-08-16

This book is a must read for anybody truly wanting to understand Haiti's history and its relationship to its neighboring countries. Although I felt like the story kind of fell apart at the end, none the less, it was a terrific, informative, important story to be told.

5 out of 5 stars The Lovesong of Amabelle...........2006-07-04

Danticat's depiction of the life and times of Amabelle and her life-long love, Sebastien, is once again truly captivating. Set in the Dominican Republic in 1937, the author provides the backdrop for what came to be one of the most horrifically violent massacres in Haitian history. Yet, similar to Breath, Eyes, Memory, the scenery/historical backdrop does not fully dominate the text; that is, the individual stories of Amabelle and Sebastien are not shadowed by the Haitian massacre, but rather framed by it. The creative effect which Danticat achieves is very simple: she is able to render a distant massacre into a personal event which has the capacity to touch the lives and consciousness of the readers, moving us to action. Essentially, she brings public Haitian history into a private sphere by presenting the lives and tribulations of Amabelle and Sebastien. And, like the other texts which came before them, The Farming of Bones truly strikes a chord. Its simple truths resonate, and the characters are vivid, honest, and three-dimensional. A very public story becomes a personal one which brings the reader at the forefront of the Haitian massacre atrocities, as well as face to face with Amabelle and those who fell and rose before her.

            Book Description

Skin and Bones relates the history of Shellcracker Haven, a community pseudonym, to the development of fresh water fish and wildlife management in the state of Florida. It examines the clash of worldviews between community residents who are personally invested and locally sensitive to the ecosystem that has fed their families for several generations, and biologist resource managers who rely on detached science-based models and political sensitivity when making policy decisions. Skin and Bones challenges readers to think about the natural world as more than fragile species and ecosystems to be defended against human destruction or as discrete natural resources to be commercially exploited. Through the Knight family of Shellcracker Haven, one learns of the power of emotional investment in the natural world, and the cost to both people and planet when we destroy that relationship.

                    Book Description

In this groundbreaking novel, Fumiko Hayashi tells the powerful story of tormented love and one woman's struggle to navigate the cruel realities of postwar Japan. The novel's characters, particularly its resilient heroine Koda Yukiko, find themselves trapped in their own drifting, unable to break out of the morass of indecisiveness. Set in the years during and after World War II, their lives and damaged psyches reflect the confusion of the times in which they live.

Floating Clouds follows Yukiko as she moves from the physically lush and beautiful surroundings of Japanese-occupied French Indochina to the desolation and chaos of postwar Japan. Hayashi's spare, affecting novel presents a rare portrait of Japanese colonialism and the harshness of Japan's postwar experience from the perspective of a woman. Its rich cast of characters, drawn from the back alleys of urban Japan and the low rungs of society, offers an unforgettable portrait of Japanese society after the war.

The tortured relationship between Yukiko and Tomioka, a minor official with the Department of Agriculture and Forestry, provides the dramatic center of the novel. Yukiko meets Tomioka while working as a typist for the Japanese ministry in Indochina, where they begin their affair. After the war, Tomioka returns to his wife but remains emotionally inscrutable to Yukiko, refusing to break off their relationship. Meanwhile, Yukiko must find her way in a radically changed postwar Japan. When Yukiko and Tomioka's lives once again cross, the two set down a path shaped by their passion and sense of desperation.

First published in 1951, Floating Clouds is a classic of modern Japanese literature and was later made into a film by legendary Japanese director Mikio Naruse.

4 out of 5 stars The (Rising) Sun Also Sets.......2006-09-03

You could read hundreds of history books and still not really grasp what world events mean to individual lives, to their hopes and dreams and to their personal comedies and tragedies. Hayashi Fumiko does just that in this fine novel, and all while telling a good story in a sparse and stark prose style befitting her subject, a deteriorating and defeated relationship--and nation--struggling and groping tenaciously for life. The giddy high of Japanese colonialism in Southeast Asia with its undertone of violence and impending disaster comes alive in vivid everyday detail, correlating with the blossoming relationship between Yukiko and Tomioka, but the majority of the tale takes place in Tokyo after the defeat, and the sordid reality of survival in a devastated society and the toll this takes on the emotional lives of the couple likewise is rendered in grim and realistic detail. This correlating contrast entwines a universal tale of relationships ripening and then souring with the historically specific tale of what ordinary people in Japan went through in the 1940's in a compelling and effective manner.

That said, the novel isn't perfect. Sometimes the reader's patience with the main characters is sorely strained. Not that one has to like the characters for a novel to be good, of course, but sometimes Tomioka is such a deadbeat and Yukiko so predictably clingy that you start losing interest in what happens to them. And somehow the ending (I will reveal no spoilers) seems rushed and a bit forced, though very moving, definitely. Still, such a narrative could easily have lapsed into utter melodrama in the hands of a lesser writer, but Hayashi always keeps the tone subdued and real, displaying consummate literary talent and craftsmanship. When all's said and done, this is justifiably a classic novel of the mid-twentieth century.

And just a quick note, for anyone interested in the sudden rise of new religions in Japan and public perceptions of them, this novel offers a very intriguing and sarcastic take on the phenomenon.

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A064223. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: A wall-mounted semi-cylindrical model fitted with a single wrap- around fin (WAF) has been investigated both numerically and experimentally, with the objective of characterizing the mean and turbulent flowfield in the vicinity of the fin. Numerical and experimental results are used to determine the nature of the flowfield and quantify the effects of fin curvature on the character of the flow near WAFs. This research has been motivated by the need to identify possible sources of a rolling moment reversal observed at high speeds in sub- scale flight tests. Detailed mean flow and turbulence measurements were obtained in the AFIT Mach 3 wind tunnel using conventional probes and cross wire hot film anemometry at a series of stations upstream of and aft of the fin shock/boundary layer interaction. Hot film anemometry results showed the turbulence intensity in the fuselage boundary layer to be far greater on the concave side of the fin than on the convex side. Similarly, the Reynolds shear stress rises dramatically on the concave side of the fin and is reduced on the convex side. These results are consistent with the stabilizing and destabilizing effects of pressure gradient distortion on supersonic boundary layers. Mean flow was also obtained in the AFIT Mach 5 wind tunnel using conventional pressure probes. Shadowgraph and schlieren photography were used for flow visualization in both wind tunnels.

5 out of 5 stars The Galactic Whirlpool.......2003-01-01

The last, and by far the best, of the Bantam paperbacks. The author is Star Trek veteran David Gerrold, who by this time had already written scripts for the series ("The Trouble With Tribbles") and the animated series ("The Pirates of Orion") as well as written a book about the series, with both praise and criticism ("The World of Star Trek"). Gerrold was also one of the developers of the Next Generation series. So obviously, he had an intimate knowledge of the characters. That knowledge shows, and shines like a beacon.

Our story: While on patrol of the Klingon border, the Enterprise encounters an odd sensor reading. Closer investigation reveals a slower-than-light ship, built on a huge scale--a self-contained world. Obviously a ship built to ferry thousands of colonists, for many generations, to a new star system. The questions follow: who built it? Where did they come from? Where were they going, and how long have they been travelling? Contact with such a ship is problematic, because they may not be aware that any other civilizations exist to contact them, and to do so may be a violation of the Prime Directive.

Soon, that point becomes moot, as they are found to be on a collision course for the Galactic Whirlpool: a twin black hole, rotating slowly through the galaxy and drawing everything in its path into the immense gravity well. If the Enterprise crew do not interfere, the ship will be destroyed in a matter of months. Now the problem becomes one of how to interfere, so as to cause the least panic and disruption to the peoples' lives.

Gerrold handles the characters expertly here, and finds a full role for Kevin Riley, an officer who had major roles in two TV episodes. Gerrold also impresses some of his own ideas about the series, many of which were also used in the Next Generation series. Gerrold has also researched his science, and brings us many tidbits about the 22nd century and the events that led up to it. He fills in many details that cannot be used in a TV show, due to time constraints. And he even places himself into the story, in the person of an historian nicknamed "Specks."

This is a wonderful novel to read, not just a good Star Trek novel. I can recommend this one highly.

3 out of 5 stars One of the original adventures........1999-12-27

Before the Pocket Books numbered series, several novels were written by noted authors involved in the series. This is a novel that never became an episode but was written nearer to the actual series timeframe.

3 out of 5 stars Reasonable episode adaptation.......1997-10-13

This novel was actually an adaptation of an unproduced two-part episode that Gerrold wrote prior to "The Trouble With Tribbles." The build-up of multiple problems makes it an interesting story, but it bogs down here and there.

Beyond the realm of the Federation, beyond the edge of the galaxy, a lost colony of humans in space drifts inexorably toward the galactic whirlpool. Kirk blases new star trails to these strange people, isolated for centuries. Unless he can convince them that the Enterprise crew members are not "demons," they will be sucked into a churning one-way funnel of doom!

Ohashi's work clarifies the placement, use, and properties of meridian lines and pressure points. It is also very easy to read and follow, yet very thourough in its coverage of detail. A must for any martial artist looking to expand their knowledge or those interested in mastering Shiatsu. Also a favorite of Mr. George Dillman - How about that for a sponsor!
