"The team of Koko, the brilliant Siamese cat, and Qwilleran, the reporter with the perceptive moustache, is back in action--with an adorable female Siamese, Yum Yum, added to the household. When Qwilleran decides to do a feature story on Junktown, he gets more than he bargained for. Not the dope den he anticipated, Junktown is a haven for antique dealers and collectors--as strange a lot as the crafty reporter has ever encountered. When a mysterious fall ends the career--and the life--of one of Junktown's leading citizens, Qwilleran is convinced it was no accident. But, as usual, it takes Koko to prove he's right. "

Never fails to delight. Enjoyable reading. Mayhem in an antique shop is no match for the feline with more than the usual amount of whiskers.

5 out of 5 stars Fun in junktown.......2007-02-14

With the third installement in The Cat Who...series this is by far the funniest.

With his new assignment in junktown, learning all about antiques and the dealers that come with it Qwill stumbbles onto what looks like another odd murder mystery. Once his mustache starts twiching and his partners, KoKo and Yum, start their usual shenanigans Qwill knows for sure he is right. The only thing left for him to do is to figure out which of the colorful characters of junktown could be the culprit.
With even more colorful, fun and way out there characters this book will definitely leave you wanting more and more of Qwill and his furry gang of friends. Next on the list is The Cat Who Saw Red.

5 out of 5 stars The Cat who turned on and off.......2006-08-06

Always great listening to a Braun mystery narrated by the talented George Guidall.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Cozy Mystery Series!.......2006-07-13

In the 3rd book in The Cat Who...series, James Qwilleran (aka "Qwill"), is working on assignment in the features department as a newsman for the Daily Fluxion. Returning to writing for a paper after an absence of several years, he has gotten his life back together and sobered up. In the previous book, he had been assigned to writing a weekly magazine style insert titled "Gracious Abodes" that focused on the world of interior design. Having survived that assignment, Qwill is back writing features, and is excited about the prospect of winning a prize in the Fluxion's annual writing contest. He hears about a nearby town called Junktown from a cabbie, and decides to write a piece about what he assumes is a crime-ridden area. Instead, he finds that Junktown is a hotbed of antique dealers, and he quickly finds a room to rent in the town while writing a story about antiques. He learns that the tenant who occupied his room previously had died in a suspicious manner, and Qwill begins to investigate the curious characters in Junktown. Qwill meets Iris Cobb in this installment, starting a lengthy friendship that will last long into future books set in Moose County.

This is my favorite cozy mystery series! I had read all of the books in the past, and wanted to read them again for a second time. This time around, I have chosen to listen to them on CD, as I love the voice of George Guidall. More of Qwill's background is explained, and it was interesting to revisit how Qwill met Mrs. Cobb, and her son, Dennis who later renovates the apple barn he lives in. For those that have not read the series, I do recommend reading the first several first. Many others can be intermixed, but this book offers good insight to some of the characters that show up later in the series. This is a great series by my favorite author!

The first book in the series is called "The Cat who Could Read Backwards". Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Those Magisterial Cats.......2005-04-05

In this, the third offering in this series we find that our hero Jim Qwilleran has a new assignment with the Daily Fluxion. In the second book we saw him change assignments but for some reason there is no explanation for this change. Whatever the reason, Qwilleran is now a feature writer and has decided to do all that he can to win a writing contest sponsored by the Fluxion because he could really use the prize money to move out of the third-rate hotel he and his cats are occupying. A taxi driver mentions an area called Junktown to the writer who assumes that it is a high traffic narcotics area. That is just the kind of story that an old crime reporter can sink his teeth in to but alas, Qwilleran finds out that Junktown is really an antiquing area filled with junk stores.

Reluctantly Qwilleran heads out for Junktown and quickly finds himself intrigued with the area and it's colorful collection of characters. The development of quirky and fun characters is an area in which this author excels and she may have outdone herself with this group. He also finds that a prominent Junker recently died in what the police have called an accident but the veteran reporter's mustache tells him that it was no accident. Soon, Qwilleran is not only involved with the people of Junktown but he rents an apartment from one of the junk dealers and he and the cats move right in. The stories that he is generating from Junktown please his editor and he thinks that there is a good chance he will win the paper's prize money. But all the while he is still working to solve the mystery of the junk dealer's death.

Shortly after his arrival in Junktown, Qwilleran's landlord is killed in an apparent fall while scrounging for goodies in an abandoned house that is about to be torn down. Again the police call it an accident and again Qwilleran is not so sure that it was accidental. Finally the cats do their thing and the whole case is cleared up but not before the cats once again save Qwilleran's life.

This book, unlike it's predecessors is a little light on the mystery angle until the end of the book but as before, the clues are there all through the story. The reporter and the readers just seem to let them slip right by. Finally however, the reporter and the reader will began to put two and two together and figure out that there is definitely something fishy in Junktown.

Once again Lilian Jackson Braun has produced a delightfully lighthearted mystery that I suspect any mystery lover will fall in love with. If you don't fall in love with the story you will assuredly fall in love with Koko and Yum Yum, super cats par excellence.

Ms. Braun is so skillful at suspense and comedy. The "tales" are wonderful, and as Koko says "Yow !"

I love and have all of the "Cat Who..." series with the exception of "60 Whiskers" which I'm waiting to come out in paperback. Since I've read all the books, I was itching to continue enjoying the exploits of Qwill.... I bought this book only to find out that I have the 3 novels (3 tales) already... Next time, I won't be so hasty...

5 out of 5 stars THESE 3 TALES ARE GEMS. .......2007-02-14

Great Fun! Delightful light reading. I like to open one of these after finishing a heavier drama. They're like a breath of fresh air.
This is the first in the series and was actually written by Ms. Jackson Braun. Many of the later volumns (there are around 24)lack substance, are thoroughly predictable, and are believed to be ghost written. Here the characters are well developed and the story line has a few surprises. Enjoy!

After I received this book, I discovered it was the first three of her Cat Who books, which I already have. I gave the book to my granddaughter who has enjoyed the stories.

This guy could be a super hero. Following some classic rules, this first effort, is worth a look. Have a strong stomach and look for a twist.

3 out of 5 stars Mildly entertaining Crime Novel.......2006-03-09

Although I was not totally displeased wth this book, I must say I was expecting more.
I would probably read this writer again, but wouldn't go to any special trouble seeking out another of his books. I chose "Barbed-Wire Kiss" because it was a crime/mystery novel, but found that it dwelt a little too much on "romance". The "love"story seemed unbelievable and trite.

              2 out of 5 stars Nothing Special.......2005-09-11

I need to put the brakes on some of the out-of-control rave reviews for this book. The plotting and prose are pedestrian, which is to say about as exciting as watching someone take an afternoon stroll. Yes, it's set in New Jersey, and it's not an awful book, but it has nothing to do with the wonderful insanity of "The Sopranos" or the bittersweet intensity of a Bruce Springsteen song. Harry Rane misses his wife and his job and drives around his niche of the Garden State in search of meaning, even if he doesn't say it in so many words. Then he gets involved in the troubles of a childhood friend, which leads to further complications involving an old lover, the consequences of which are obvious to anyone who's ever read a mystery/crime novel. Which is what pretty much lets the air out of any tension Stroby's set up; when you're that far ahead of the character, it's difficult to be engaged.

5 out of 5 stars Great Hardboiled Story.......2005-03-01

Completely hardboiled with a brooding protagonist, The Barbed-Wire Kiss is the outstanding debut thriller by Wallace Stroby. Plenty of violent action, mobbed up criminals and small time crooks feature against Harry Rane, a reluctant hero nursing a broken heart and an inability to overcome his grief and sense of guilt. Fans of hardboiled crime fiction should rejoice over another new name to look out for.

Harry Rane is an ex-New Jersey state trooper living quietly on his own, grieving for his wife who died from cancer, now content to drift along doing nothing of any consequence. He is forced out of his malaise by a call from an old friend who has gotten himself into some financial trouble with a crime boss. His friend's name is Bobby Fox, and Bobby has been left holding the bag on a drug deal to the tune of 50 grand. The man he owes the money to is Eddie Fallon and Eddie's putting the pressure on him to repay the money, or else (insert your favourite mob-like threat here).

Harry acts as Bobby's negotiator, meeting with Eddie to work out a plan that would get Bobby out from under. All goes reasonably smoothly, managing to get under the skin of Eddie's bodyguard, when Harry's world is rocked at the end of the meeting when he finds out that Eddie's wife is his first love Cristina, whom he hasn't seen in 30 years. Inevitably, they begin meeting behind Eddie's back, renewing their old acquaintances, and just as inevitably Eddie finds out about it which is just around the point where the action rockets into stratospheric proportions.

From this point, the wise-guy violence that was simmering with cruel promise just below the surface is revealed as Eddie and his men flex their muscles. But rather than running along a predictable storyline, there is a suddenly tangent thrown in that reveals a surprising twist that will turn a simple debt repayment into a fight for Harry's life.

Over and over in the course of the book, through his words and his actions, you get the impression that Harry cares little about consequences. His friend's in debt to a crime boss? No problem, confront the man and work out an arrangement to pay him back on your terms...take it or leave it. Met your former lover who now happens to be unhappily married to a crime boss? No worries! Begin an affair with her without being particularly careful about hiding it.

When you feel as though you've got nothing to lose you can act with impunity. The problems arise when other people are involved and you realize that you're not as isolated as you thought. Such is the lot of Harry Rane.

Wallace Stroby does an excellent job of setting the mood of the book early through Harry's mourning and then builds on it with a tough, no-nonsense plot that is both taut and gripping. Fully fleshed out characters who are given solid backgrounds that are brought to life by Stroby's colorful prose ensure that we care about the good guys, hate with a passion the bad and remain unsure who is going to get out of it with their lives.

Setting a high standard first time out, the noir genre has been further enriched by The Barbed-Wire Kiss. Long on action and not overly burdened with needless detail, this book was "hold onto your hats" fast, pared to the bone and a dangerously enthralling read.

4 out of 5 stars Good atmospheric thriller.......2004-03-26

Stroby is a fine writer. His dialogue is crisp and the prose is sharp. He is very talented at creating the atmosphere of the Jersey Shore. The action is good and not over done. The story is not wildly orginial, but it works. There are no punches pulled and no characters saved because they are "good." I would have liked to have seen the character of Cristina developed a bit more. In addition, I would have loved to see more of Ray Washington (who comes across as the classic smart ex-partner with a wife--think Danny Glover). Still, well done and worth a read.

5 out of 5 stars A look at the Rodney King Riots from the streets.......2001-08-16

I read this book a few years ago after hearing radio personality Dennis Prager recommend it. It is a very worthwhile read. Williams chronicles his upbringing in the midwest and how it differed from most of his friends (piano practice while the others played in the street). He also gives an intimate look at how valuable that upbringing was to him as an adult (childhood friends in prison while he was trying to make it in the entertainment field). This introduction gives a good background for the frustration and shock at what followed the Rodney King verdict in 1992 when the news hit the streets. These emotions prompted Williams to run out of him home (in the area of the riots) in an effort to try to do something positive in the middle of the chaos. This sets up the story of how Williams rescued a Japanese man from attackers during the riots, and the publicity the act inspired. Although this act was only a minor news story in the larger story of the riots, it is just as large a human story. It is very thought provoking and makes for an interesting and quick read. I would recommend it to anyone that wants a first person look at the riots. My wife used it as one of many sources for a college term paper on the riots.

'A Gathering of Heroes', MAY be the best sword and fantasy novel of all time. A terrific story that you wish could go on and on..., and one that you wish you could be part of. Read the companion novel 'Ingulf the Mad' too, and find out more about this perflexing character.

5 out of 5 stars The Gathering Of Heroes.......2003-11-12

After stumbling upon "The Lost Prince" and "King Chondos Ride" in a local library I was determined to locate this book. At the time I believed the trilogy unfinished, and desparately desired the outcome for Istvan and Jodos.

Some ten years later, I stumble upon it in a tiny book shop in the middle of nowhere. In those ten years I had managed to purchase only one of the two original novels!

Regardless that I lacked the opening novel, I re-read the KCR, and read for the first time The Gathering of Heroes. The first thing that grabbed my attention was (of course) the extensive list of the main characters at the start of the novel. Paul Edwin Zimmer had already proven that he does not rely on perhaps two or three main characters but a score, and this novel seemed epic even compared to prior efforts.

The next thing I noticed was that while this was a sequel, it was not the direct continuance of the story. It was not long before that fact was long overlooked!

Gripping is hardly the word to describe Paul Edwin Zimmer's work, as the word seems to lack the substance that Paul deserves. Indeed, Paul gives substance in his novel. Every character has a background, and while you do not know the entire background of these some twenty heroes (and at least three or four main enemies!) you certainly get the feeling of a well fleshed character in Paul's mind. The interaction between characters perfectly implies the status it deserves - so many heroes meeting the heroes they aspire to, or other heroes whom "nobody has heard of" regardless of their great deeds and weapons blessed by the Hasturs.
Once these heroes arrive at Rath Tintallain, it is incredibly hard to put this book down. The combat just grows upon itself with the next fight being bigger than the last. And just when you can't believe how enormous that last combat was, another awaits to completely blow your mind away. And then the dyole is summoned. And then the dragons come.

On top of all the combat exhausting the men, they are also forced to endure the songs of the elves, and the box that is kept secret from all but a few in the hidden city of Rath Tintallain. Come learn why it is so secret, and why the Sarlow want it.

As many other's, I was also shattered to hear of Mr. Zimmer's untimely death. I remember the Goosebumps that would continually envelope me when reading his books. That to me, was the mark of a great novel...a rare occurrence to this jaded reader of thousands of Fantasy/Sci-Fi books over the last 25 years. A Gathering of Heroes was among his best work, right up there with the wonderfully fabulous Dark Prince & King Chondos' Ride. Only David Gemmell has since written books that can equal Mr. Zimmer's in grandeur. That rare intuitive grasp of human nature & complexities was his forte, & he wielded it with uncanny precision & care. You were thrust into his visions & imagination within the first few pages...& you felt lost & alone when the last page was read & the journey done. I HIGHLY recommend his books to anyone who wants 'Mature', 'Realistic', 'Dark' Fantasy. Except for David Gemmell, there is NO substitute.

                      5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......1998-12-27

I was devastated to read of this author's death. This book ranks second only to "Ender's Game" in my library of favorites. Though hard to find, it is worth the effort.

From the first page you are thrust into the action. Istvan after a season of campigning for the Airian Empire is weary and is looking forward to period of relaxation. Away from the savage Norians and the armies of Sarlow but it is not to be. Answering urgent summons from the Mystic Hasturs, the mysterious guardians of the world. Istavan finds himself on a wild Elven ride in the company of the greatest heroes of the Island continent of Y'gora. Riding to the aid of a hidden city, which contains a secret that must be protected at all costs. Ranged against them are the dreaded armies of Sarlow augmented by evil sorcerors, dark demons of great power, werewolves and ancient Dragon and his brood. And if that were not enough the heroes must face the trio of warriors that lead this fearsom crew; Svaran the Black, wearer of an armour that is proof against all mystic swords ;Grom Beardless skilled deadly swordsman a match for Istvan himself and Vor halftroll a giant warrior possessing great speed and strength. For you readers who love their heroic fantasy to be dark, uncomprising, intelligently written and leaves you with a sense a wonder at it's epic scope. Then buy this book. Sadly Paul only wrote 5 of these Dark Border books and a few short stories relating to them. Quality not quantity what was mattered unlike a large number of his more verbose contemporaries. His last book is called 'The king who was of old". As I understand it, the executors of his estate are still attempting to find a publisher. Well I for one wish them luck and god speed

Companion to "The Dark Border" series by Paul Edwin Zimmer. The Dark Boarder series was the first Fantasy books that I'd ever read, and set me on a path of reading hundreds of books in simular style. I'd read Sci Fi but nothing like this. If you haven't read "The Dark Border" series read them, however you don't have to read those before reading "A Gathering Of Heroes." I found myself intently following each charactor, and there are many (nice reference guide in the front, tell of the acomplishments and merit of each hero.) Action packed and sorrowful (most die) not to spoil but they would have to considering the magnitude of the forces against them, Let's be realistic. This book is memorable enough that it is one of a few that I retain in my collection. Sorry to see no reviews and only 1 title availiable. I've had my copy for over 20 years.

This is an excellent book. Probably the only one you'll need if you want to know about NLP and want to be a good presenter at the work or church. The book has plenty exercises and it is well written with just enough pictures, small chapters and deep subject with clear and concise explanation. I give it 5 stars, and I have read it many times and never get tired of reading it.

This book was recommended to me by a friend and I shall be indebted to that person the rest of my life. As a professional presenter I constantly need to review my delivery techniques and look for ways to add impact for my audience. This book turned out to be an amazing assest in that regard.
I tried two techniques right after finishing the book and was amazed at their efficacy. I try to add one more during each presentation. If your serious about improving your ability to relate to groups (or individuals for that matter) buy and use this book. It is indeed magic.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful book - absolutely priceless.......2006-05-25

Some context: I've debated, acted in plays and done presentations in various forms all my life and won awards consistently. I've also read 100+ books on speaking/presenting/influencing such as influence by cialdini, art of rhetoric by aristotle, nlp books, dale carnegie.

However, this book is by far the best book i've ever read on presenting.

There are priceless ideas and exercises in here for
                                1) Managing how you feel.
                                2) Managing the audience's state i.e. how they feel.
                                3) Keeping different types of people involved i.e. people with different representational systems (visual, kinesthetic, etc.) and different attitudes (why do this, how do we do this, etc.)
                                4) A great structure for presentations.
                                5) Energy Level
                                6) Developing rapport with the audience.
                                7) Going into a state which is ideal for presenting.
                                8) Using open ended stories (open loops) to increase audience's curiosity etc.
                                9) Reading the audience

Do read this book - it's a piece of art. And it'll definitely help you get much much better results and have more fun when presenting and interacting with people.

                                5 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT, PRACTICAL.......2005-05-03

The best I have read on how to develop your own Presentation Skills. What irks me most is the negative review that one reader has given. Obviously the reader does not make presentations very often and has no idea how important and practical the contents of this book are.
