Koko Does it Again.......2007-06-10
If you are a Koko and Yum Yum fan, this book is for you. Lillian Jackson Braun writes these stories in a way that pulls you into the story. You are with Qwill and Koko every step of the way. The twists are well done. A story worth reading over and over...
The Cat Who Brought Down the House.......2006-11-04
I purchased this as a gift for my aunt, who has been collecting this whole set of books. Although I have not personally read them, she is an avid and loyal fan, along with many of her friends. They all seem to have a "close relationship" with this author; and, reading her books makes them feel "at home again". All of her books are "connected", and my aunt feels they should be read in succession without missing any one of them. Once she starts reading one, she JUST CAN'T PUT IT DOWN!
Love it.......2006-09-30
Even though I'm only 11, people, CHILL. I am curently feasting on it, but I love it. This is practically the only good cat fiction out there. All you cat lovers, BUY IT NOW. And one last thing: MEOW!!!
Not one of her better ones..........2006-05-09
I've been a fan of this series for years, but this one was really disappointing. One almost gets the impression that Braun herself has lost interest in the series...(IF she even writes the books anymore!?) Of course, the books have always been slow, but they did have a certain charm to them, making them the perfect bedtime material...but, boy, did I sleep well, when I was reading THIS one...
Braun's back to writing well........2006-04-15
I really enjoyed THE CAT WHO BROUGHT DOWN THE HOUSE, and I consider it one of her best, especially one of the best of her recent ones. Most of the book is a pleasant visit with the inhabitants of Moose County. The mystery is really only a side note, but it's still fun. The early books in this series were SO good, and later the plots seemed to be phoned in, but she's back in form here.
Product Description
The captivating series featuring Mystery's most extraordingary detective team.
Book Description
The bed was neatly made, and the woman on top neatly strangled.
According to all accounts, Angela Hathall was deeply in love with her husband and far too paranoid to invite an unknown person into their home. So who managed to gain entry and strangle her without a struggle? That is the problem facing Inspector Wexford in
Shake Hands Forever. Perhaps it was the mystery woman who left her fingerprints on the Hathall's bathtub? Perhaps it was Angela's husband who lied about a stolen library book? And why was the Hathall home, usually so unkempt, exqisitely clean the day of Angela's death? Then a neighbor--friendly, knowing, disarmingly beautiful--offers Wexford her assistance. And what begins as a rather tricky case turns into an obsession that threatens to destroy the Inspector's career--as well as his marriage.
Maddeningly addictive, smart and surprising,
Shake Hands Forever showcases Ruth Rendell at the height of her storytelling powers.
Customer Reviews:
No Directions Necessary.......2007-01-25
Definitely not one of Ms. Rendell's better efforts in the Inspector Wexford series. While the basic plot is intricate and clever, the mystery tends to get bogged down with painfully detailed descriptions of travel around London and its suburbs via public conveyances and automobiles; if I had wanted travel directions, I would have purchased a road map from the Automobile Association of Britain and some public transit schedules from the LTC. Still, second-rate Ruth Rendell is better than no Ruth Rendell at all.
Good Plot; Great Ending; Great Writing.......2006-05-23
As always with Ruth Rendell the writing is outstanding. She does not waste words and every scene has an important purpose. Each sentence is well-written. Inspector Wexford is worth spending time with because he comes across like a real person. Indeed, he always seems human when some of his ideas are proven wrong. He has persistence and determination.
This mystery has an excellent ending that surprised me. The ending was plausible and the plot makes sense.
An Inspector Wexford Murder Mystery.......2004-04-15
This is a reprint of a 184-page novel copyrighted 1975. I had trouble maintaining an interest, particularly in the early part of the novel. Part of the problem seems to be the writing style. I found myself going back to reread sentences to figure out what was being said. Perhaps it is just awkward sentence structuring. There is also a lot of digression into side issues involving various characters.
The basic plot is interesting, involving a man who is not particularly good looking, but who leaves his wife for another woman. The other woman is a greedy type who is willing to lead him into a life of crime for her personal benefit. The problem is proving the crime, particularly after Wexford is accused of harassment and forced to officially drop things. The case extends over about 18 months.
The final solution has some surprises, more or less, but I guessed the "surprise" early in the plot, probably because I have seen a similar plot device used elsewhere. Like most Wexford mysteries, guns do not enter into the plot.
Sharp, focused mystery.......2004-03-10
Shake Hands For Ever - a novel which takes its title from a work by Michael Drayton - is very much a Wexford novel. There's not a lot of Burden here at all, instead Rendell turns her full attention to the character of Wexford, and his frustration when he comes upon a case which he feels he knows the answer to, but cannot prove. Until, one year after it occurs, new information starts turning up...
Robert Hathall is bringing his overbearing, overcritical mother home to meet his second wife Angela, a woman whom Mrs Hathall clearly detests (mainly for the fact that she thinks she split up her son's first marriage). Angela was supposed to meet her husband and mother-in-law at the train station, but didn't turn up. Eventually, the two make their way home, and discover her dead body, strangled on the bed. Having cleaned the house immaculately for the impending visit, there is almost nothing to go on.
This is not really a whodunnit, as pretty early on Wexford decides he knows who did it. All he has to do is prove it, and the why, and the how. But it proves an impossible task, and when he is warned off the case by his superior, for "harassing" his chief suspect, Wexford undertakes some private investigations of his own...
Although I don't think Shake Hands for Ever is quite the one of the best Wexford novels - it is beautifully focused, yes, but as this is mainly a "Wexford must prove his theory" novel, there aren't a great range of characters, although those that are are as well-drawn and fascinating as ever - it is still very fine indeed. It boasts, of the Wexford books anyway, possibly Rendell's finest last-chapter shock of her career. It's an excellent crime/mystery novel, which even though we think we know what is going on, is far from predictable, and the story goes deeper than we at first think. The prose is sharp, and socially aware as ever. Ominous and dark, too, brilliantly balanced by some moments great humour. Rendell's almost vicious wit is often glossed over, not even noticed, by most reviewers, but it is another of those things which make her so special. Her latest book, The Rottweiler, was full of it, and it was marvellous!
To sum up, Shake Hands For Ever is, though not the very very best, a great Wexford novel from Ruth Rendell - one who all fans of hers must read.
The wise Inspector Wexford has his suspicions..........2002-12-01
Through the years Ruth Rendell has proved her mastery of the "who done it" genre and this Inspector Wexford mystery, first published in 1975, is certainly true to form. It's set in England, of course, amidst places whose names roll of the tongue with a British accent. There's an unsolved murder in the first chapter, with a richly developed cast of characters surrounding the mystery.
There's a dead woman and her seemingly grief-stricken husband. There's her mother-in-law who hates her and her husband's ex-wife who's known for making ugly scenes. There are few clues also, as the house has been immaculately cleaned. There's only one handprint, little to go on. But then there is the wise Inspector Wexford. He understands people well and has his suspicions.
The story unfolds quickly, as one clue after another comes to light and some new characters are introduced. I was intrigued as I easily followed the plot. The author is very clear in her intentions and I found myself identifying with the detective as he investigated the case, which wound up taking more than a year to solve.
It only took me a few hours to read the book, waking up in the middle of the night to finish what I had started that afternoon. It was all one big puzzle, but the end put all the puzzle pieces together. As I drifted off to sleep however, I was troubled. The puzzle pieces fit, but the motivation just didn't seem strong enough for murder. And so I woke early and re-read the last few pages, which included a surprise ending. It was explained completely. Problem is, I didn't believe it.
This is a good read and mystery fans will love it. I did enjoy it as a few hours of entertainment. I recommend it. I'm just not a mystery fan though.

Book Description
She was only eleven years old and an orphan, yet the people of Lale's village hated her and drove her into the wilderness. Cast out, she followed her destiny to a place of dark and shadowy purposes, a school for foundling girls in the land of Tamurin. There Lale found affection, sisterhood and a home...and a profession that may cost her everything she loves. Driven by the darkest sorcery, she must conceal the truth of what she truly is...
Customer Reviews:
Eh.......2007-08-01
The best thing The Assassins of Tamurin has going for it is its descriptive style; words and descriptions flow and hypnotize and capture light and beauty in such a way that one reads compulsively, flipping pages and plowing through the novel at a furious pace. The world, which seems to parallel ancient China, is complex and fascinating, full of interesting places and cultures which the novel gives us various glimpses of. This book kept me entertained while I was on a plane to and then from California, but with all those compliments, I still cannot in good faith recommend the novel.
The story is written in first person from the perspective of Lale, the novel's protagonist, as she tells the tale many years later. Lale lives in a poor village named Riversong; she doesn't know who her real parents might be, but she's adopted and raised by a family who essentially despises her because she eats their food and costs them money and because their own childen have died in childbirth. One day, Lale loses her family's needles and lies about it to them, resulting in her getting beaten senseless and condemned as an outcast.
Following this, she decides to run away from Riversong, and once on the road, she's intercepted by Makina Seval, the Despotana of Tamurin. Makina seems warm and motherly; she adopts young foundling girls and takes them to her school, where some of them will later be trained as assassins. Makina's grand ambition in life is destroying the Sun Lord, Terem Rathai, because her baby son was killed in the battle which put Terem on the throne. Lale is sent to get close to Terem and become his concubine of sorts as per Makina's plan for his death, but of course this plan is (naturally) complicated when Lale begins to fall in love with Terem.
This novel has several gaping flaws, in spite of its readability and entertainment value. The first flaw is, as others have stated, the book is ridiculously predictable. Part of this stems from the fact that Lale is telling the story as an older woman, and she drops hints all throughout about what's going to happen. I'm not sure why the author chose to have her do that, as it rather lessens the suspense. But even without those hints, the plot itself and the plot twists are simply obvious.
The second flaw is the fact that Lale is the only truly developed character in the novel. Terem is too perfect to be true, and even though Makina is a great villain in terms of the fact that she enslaves the girls with love as much as with sorcery (a villain who uses love to control people is cruel indeed), what do we really know about Makina? Not a lot. The other girls at Lale's school are especially underdeveloped, and it's too bad, because some of them seemed like they might be interesting with more details given.
The third flaw, and the one that ultimately sinks this book to two stars for me, is the ending. People have commended S.D. Tower for not extending the book into a trilogy, but frankly, the book needed to have been extended to flesh out the premise. As it is, it's as though Tower knew (s)he had written himself/herself into a corner and concocted a slapdash deus ex machina ending in which altogether too much is resolved altogether too quickly, easily, and perfectly. The ending is contrived; it doesn't ring true. It feels phoney, and it ultimately makes the book forgettable. Recommended only if you have no better fantasy novels around to read. Otherwise, skip it.
Masterful Writing!.......2007-01-04
This book definitely goes on my shelf of favorites to be read over and over. From beginning to end, it was hard to put down. There is so much attention to detail that you really get a feeling of being there. With all of that, you don't get bogged down in description. The plot moves right along as you see the heroine get into a seemingly impossible situation. Truely masterful writing.
S.D. Tower is very talented.......2005-09-07
This book was great! I loved it! I read the other reviews written for this book, and some of them mentioned that the plot takes place in ancient China. I seriously didn't know that, so that was a surprise to me. Anyways, this is a wonderfully descriptive book and I think S.D. Tower is very talented.
Could not put it down!.......2005-09-03
From S.D. Tower is a story full of suspense, twists and turns, romance, tragedy, the bondage of friendship, the gratitude and love of a daughter to a mother, betrayal, justice, bitter revenge and much much more. I was so drawn to this novel, I could not put it down until I had read it to the end, and eagerly did I read each chapter. I found the landscape and world in which this story took place, so vividly described, and each character and their own stories seemed rich and real. Altogether, this novel is now sitting on my bookshelve, waiting to be read again, and I definitly suggest you read it, and be ensorceled by this wonderful tale.
Great read, couldn't put it down.......2005-09-03
I thought this novel was excellent, and rather well told. It begins slowly, but as you read on, events pick up their pace, and you find yourself on the edge of your seat, reading your eyes out. S.D. Tower provides the reader with wonderful full lucious descriptions of Lale's World, and it is so rich in history and political intrigues that, if you pause your reading from this book to, say get a glass of water, you find yourself slightly disorientated. The characters in this book was also wonderfully described, their motives, their personalities, one could relate, and empathize with them. The assassins of Tamurin could very well be one of the best fantasies I have ever read, and I look eagerly for more books by this very talented and up-coming author.

Book Description
If you get migraines you know how laughable it is to hear them described as “headaches.” As one poet put it, “the migraine is a beast from Hell, a bone-crushing, brain-twisting, heart-rending, apocalyptic scourge—an insult to all that’s holy.” And that’s putting it mildly. People have been trying to tame the migraine beast for thousands of years. Some early healers bored holes into their patients’ skulls, the Greeks inhaled the smoke of burning coffee beans, while in ancient Egypt, doctors tied herb-stuffed clay crocodiles to migraine sufferer’s heads. Fortunately, we live in more enlightened times and there are now medically sound approaches that are relatively simple and inexpensive—and they don’t leave scars or involve extreme fashion statements.
Your complete guide to taking charge of your migraines and getting your life back, Migraines For Dummies offers a focused, fleshed-out program that works in the real world. This friendly guide fills you in on what you need to know to:
- Understand migraines and why you get them
- Relieve symptoms
- Pinpoint pain triggers
- Sort through the various medications
- Evaluate alternative remedies
- Make simple migraine-busting lifestyle changes
- Stop migraines from disrupting your family and work lives
- Find a good doctor to help you manage the beast
The authors look at the whole spectrum of the problem—from dealing with the number-one issue of pain relief, to handling the peripheral problems like absences from work skepticism from friends, and impact on family. They also explore a range of critical related issues, including:
- Different types of migraines, including abdominal, ocular, hemiplegic, opthamoplegic, and women’s hormonal migraines
- Triggers, such as environmental allergens, stress, dietary triggers, and even exercises that can cause migraines
- Over-the-counter medications, vitamins and herbal supplements
- Biofeedback, meditation, massage, acupuncture, and other alternative remedies
- The pros and cons of prescription remedies, including ergotamine derivatives, antidepressants, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, botox and more
You’ve tried Aunt Edna’s camphor-soaked head cloths. Now explore a sensible, medically sound approach, and get on the road to full-fledged pain relief with Migraines For Dummies.
Customer Reviews:
A decent overview book.......2007-06-29
I read this on a whim.
I have headaches. Some ok; some really bad. People would offer advice and suggest migraine meds.
Problem is the fact I really didn't have any ideas on what to weigh or consider.
This book is good in that it will help with the basic question "Do I have Migraines?" In my case, I am lucky to be a lite migraine sufferer. Some of the explanations from the book helped me examine cause and effect of the headaches. In some cases, they are simple stress headaches be it from too much work, bad posture at the computer for long periods of time, etc.
Probably the best thing I got from was looking for triggers and measuring the body for when something bad was about to happen. Sometimes it gets worst when you try to tough it out.
I will say again that this is a book for those that want to know more but don't really know what to do or where to begin searching.
If you are one of the unfortunates that suffer from frequent migraines, then you probably already have an arsenal of knowledge and probably would not get much from this book.
Some of the writing, made me skip as some of the ideas are repeated.
Overall, it's not a bad book especially when considering the Dummies books tend to be a little weak. I am a little more informed on the subject matter as the book named some sites on the web were I could get more information.
Migraines for Dummies.......2007-01-09
I bought this book for my son-in-law who tells me it is chock full of information. He suffers terribly with migraines and assigned me to search the Net for information. His doctor doesn't offer him so much. I bought this book because Football for Dummies was very useful to me.
Not just for dummies.......2006-11-06
This "dummy" book really caught me by surprise, because I was expecting mediocre and got excellent instead. It covered so many relevant issues about migraines, that it should be helpful to anyone who suffers from mild to severe migraines, and also to those close to that person. Buy this book with confidence.
You also need a GOOD Neurologist!.......2006-04-17
First this book isn't a Doctor (neurologist) so if you don't have one and suffer Migraines Please find a Doctor. I lucked out an found a Neurologist who also suffers Migraines. He was a God send. This Book refers back to what my Doctor told me. I am on medications but went from TWO "MIGRAINES" a week to one or less a month. When I was recommended this Neurologist by my Family Doctor, I had a Migraine for Three Weeks. My Life is now Liveable. This book helped confirm what my Neurologist said and in small bite sized pieces. The Doctor also prescribed of all things a Natural supplment that has not reduced the Severity but the Frequency. That is MIGRELIEF made by Quantum ([...]). What I eat seemed to make the Migraines worst. Preventing the onset of a Migraine started by me changing my Diet. The healthy things I ate were some of the triggers to onset. This book is helpful. Here is a site my Doctor uses ([...]) . I am not saying this book alone will heal anyone. Without a good Neurologist you might keep having Migraines. I am now at the point I can sell all my Migraine Books. I am living again and not hiding in a dark room waiting for the migraine to stop. Remenber a Banana that is ripe (Eatable and not bitter) can bring on headaches.
I hope this helps someone.
Excellent Overview & Guide.......2004-03-05
As a 20-year migraine sufferer, I must have 50 books on the subject including textbooks used in medical schools and costing $100 or more. This book gives a great overview and introduction to the person who is trying to find out where to start to take charge of their own medical treatment for Migraine and what questions to ask your Doc to see if he really knows what he is talking about. Most don't. This is a "First Step" book and not a book full of answers, but it will help you find more definitive information and save you wasting your time and money on a Doc who hasn't got a clue as to the discoveries about Migraine using Positive Emission Tomography since the late 1990's. Everything "taught" MDs about Migraine prior to about 1995 is just simply UNTRUE and this book will help you find sources for the latest material.
