5 out of 5 stars Don't miss out on the latest on Lily!.......2007-08-07

I won't go into detail about this book, so many have already written great reviews. I will say that if you are looking for something new to read, don't pass up the Lily Bard Series. Lily is a woman who has experienced the worst life has to offer, kidnapped, gang raped, and commiting murder to save her life. Her body is not only scarred, but psychologically she is a mess. Her main goal in life has been to shield herself from people, and taking the solitary job of cleaning other people's houses has insured she has the least amount of contact as possible. Then along comes a man (sexy as hell) with as many demons in his past as she has, though his are of his own making. How these two wounded people find each other and the growth of their love does the heart good. Ms. Harris has a unique quality of bringing fictional characters to life. When I read about the people of Shakespeare, Lily, Jack, Claude, and the rest of the gang, it's hard to remember they don't really exist. I challenge anyone looking for something new to read to pick up the first Lily Bard mystery. You will be hooked from the first page. These books have rich characters and the mystery/suspense keeps you guessing till the end. Now Ms. Harris, please get writing on the latest peek into the complicated but throughly entertaining world of Lily Bard.

5 out of 5 stars Read this book now .. ( ok after you have read the other books in the series).......2007-06-27

I have had all the Lily Bard series sitting on my shelf for over a year and just kept putting off reading them, which is strange since I just love the Sookie Stackhouse books. Now I've finally read them and what a surprise -they are all terrific. Shakespeare's Counselor is the last one Charlaine Harris has written (and it is possibly the last one according to her website)and it is a fast paced , quirky , intelligent story with great characters and plot. Do not put off reading these books !! Lily is very different from Sookie , but just as captivating . I read all 5 books in 2 days and I'm so sorry that I did not read them sooner.
Now I'm going to read all her other books.

4 out of 5 stars A fun read! .......2007-05-09

The Lily Bard mysteries are a fun, quick read. The heroine is a strong, quirky character, and the series will keep you entertained.

5 out of 5 stars This book's got enough twists to make The Bard proud.......2005-02-12

And keep you turning pages well into the night.

Harris drops you in the middle of a nightmare. Our heroine is struggling with a male attacker. She strikes his face only to wake up and realize she's bloodied her lover's nose instead of the attacker she'd thought was going to rape her.

It's time for Lily Bard to go to rape survivor counseling.....

She reluctantly walks in to the Shakespeare, Arkansas Health Department Tuesday evening to find that her counselor Tamsyn Lynd is receiving threatening calls.

The counselor doesn't want to talk about it.

Matters only get worse from there. Lily is walking by Tamsyn's house and discovers a dead squirrel hanging on the porch.

The ante keeps getting upped. No one can figure out who would want to harm quiet, unassuming Tamsyn, but clearly someone does.

I'm not going to tell you any of the rest. YOu just have to read it. Believe me, it's worth the effort. I crossed over to Charlaine Harris' mysteries from her Southern Vampire series and I've got to tell you---she's awesome no matter what genre she's working in.

This is not going to be the only time I vist Shakespeare, Arkansas and Lily Bard.

4 out of 5 stars great addition to lily bard series.......2003-12-19

I won't write a synopsis because others have done so, instead I'll tell you what I find most compelling about this book.

For me it's less the mystery elements, and more watching the evolution of the protagonist Lily Bard. Now most people who post negative reviews about Harris' later novels in the Lily Bard series complain about the same thing; they dislike the fact that the protagonist appears to be changing. That's right...Oh, the Horror! A character actually growing and evolving...what will be next?!!

If you want a static personality then go read a bad book, or a terrible series. What makes this a good series and a pretty good book, although not my favorite, is that like a real person Lily's character evidences change. She suffered a horrible rape and instead of being permanently emotionally stunted by this( which is what most people seem to be complaining about)she is slowly starting to get her life back together. To go back to the person she would have been, if not for her rape. I'm not saying she'll be the some happy-go-lucky, unaffected, innocentmiss, I don't really see that happening. But instead of having a permanent well of rage and anger inside her she's learning how to be happy. Like a real person would.

That's what I like about these books.

1 out of 5 stars Where are the good dogs books?!.......2007-04-11

I was so happy to find a dog book (there are cats everywhere, but few authors do good dog books) but was soon disappointed. First, they were Poodles, one of my least favorite dogs. Second, it was about dogs shows, one of my least favorite `sports' (and I use that term very loosely here) - MUTTS RULE! Adopt your next dog from the pound! And lastly, it really wasn't all that well written. I didn't like the characters, the plot was skimpy and uninteresting, and I really wasn't drawn into the book at all. I will continue my search for a good dog series, and will almost certainly not read more of these.

1 out of 5 stars Couldn't Even Get To Page 100.......2006-01-14

As a dog lover, this book caught my eye on the shelf of my local bookstore. I wish I'd left it there.

Several reviewers said it gets better as it goes along, both in this installment and in the series. I can't get that far. Every time I pick the book up to read it, I end up falling asleep with the book in my hand after a few pages.

Every character comes across as grating and unlikable. I find everyone referring to the female dogs as "bitches" annoying (proper or not). I hate when authors give their female heroines small children that add nothing to the story other than to be dragged around with their mothers on sleuthing expeditions. There's just nothing about this book that makes me want to keep going to find out if it gets better.

I have a friend who just adopted a poodle puppy. I'm sure she'll appreciate the gift and like it better than I did.

4 out of 5 stars This Series Gets Soooo Much Better...........2004-06-03

I am currently on my 5th book in this series by Laurien Berenson and it has been terrific to witness how far she progresses as a writer with each new book. If you like dogs or especially if you are involved in showing dogs, this is a wonderful series.

Admittedly, "A Pedigree to Die For" started out a little slow in holding my interest. (But read it anyway, because the first few books really give you the "background" on the characters for the really great books later on!)

Melanie Travis is a 30-yr. old special needs teacher who is coping with the demands of raising a 4-yr. old son alone. Her divorced husband is not in the picture and neither are his child support payments!

When Melanie's Uncle Max dies under mysterious circumstances, a new friendship forms with Aunt Peg. The only problem is that the man Melanie suspects the most - Sam Driver, is the man that her Aunt Peg keeps trying to throw her together with!

While Melanie is trying to solve the murder, the reader is educated about the various aspects of dog competitions. I found it to be really inspirational. And no, Melanie does not get involved in showing dogs...yet.

I am so glad that I gave this series a chance!

4 out of 5 stars Dying to Find a Stud!.......2003-07-26

Being a fan of the Dog Lover's Mystery series by Susan Conant, I decided to try the first book in the Melanie Travis mystery series by Laurien Berenson. While the two series are quite a bit different in style (Conant's books are more cerebral and the mysteries more complex), both contain interesting characters and lots of information about dogs.

In this book, we meet Melanie, a single mother strapped for cash who agrees to help her Aunt Peg find a missing champion poodle stud, Beau. Her uncle was found dead of an apparent heart attack in the kennel area, and when he was found, Beau was gone. Being suspicious, Melanie's aunt is convinced that someone took the dog to use as a stud dog, and Melanie goes undercover at several dog shows to get information on the dog's whereabouts. Meeting an attractive exhibitor with a strong motive for stealing the dog, Melanie must stay focused on her task and when another death occurs, she steps up the investigation to find both a killer and the missing dog.

I enjoyed this first book for the plot (there were several twists and turns I never saw coming) and for the background information. Having only read this first book, I was expecting that Melanie would somehow actually get involved with showing dogs, and when that did not happen I was a bit disappointed. I was also disappointed that her wealthy Aunt Peg did not offer to pay her for the time spent looking for her missing dog since it is hardly a secret that Melanie is a struggling single mother. Other than these minor complaints, I enjoyed this book and look forward to more doggie adventures with Melanie. Enjoy!

    A Cozy Lover

4 out of 5 stars Great start to a fun mystery series.......2000-12-04

I don't know anything about dog breeding, aside from what video snatches of dog shows I happen to catch on Animal Planet as I'm flipping channels. I don't even own a dog (apartment rules, sigh), so when I picked up A Pedigree to Die For I had hoped for at least enough coherent explanations of the breeding and show process to help me understand what was happening in the story without detracting too much from the mystery.

I'm happy to say Laurien Berenson, in this debut installment of Melanie Travis mysteries, does a great job of balancing suspense and milieu, about as well as Melanie herself balances single motherhood and sleuthing. It helps here that Melanie, the niece of a champion Standard Poodle breeder, knows little about dog breeding as well, and we learn with her.

Of course, while we're learning the difference between a Standard and a Toy Poodle, Melanie is changing hats at breakneck speed -- from mother to aggravated sister to compliant niece to sleuth to summer school teacher and back again. When a prized stud Poodle from Melanie's aunt's kennel is "dognapped", Aunt Peg convinces Melanie to go undercover and scour the dog breeding community for clues and paw prints.

A Pedigree to Die For is a fun, "cozy" read, where the mystery lies in the chase and not in gruesome killings. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more about Melanie going to the dogs in the future.

"You can have the body you want," promises A. Scott Connelly, M.D., a physician, personal trainer, sports nutrition specialist, and sports-supplement designer. His "6-Pack Prescription" is a program of four six-week cycles (strength training, sculpting, fat burning, and maintenance/endurance), each with its own eating plan, exercise program, and optional supplementation. Six months, promises Connelly, will give you the body you want.

"To change how you look on the outside, you need to reverse what's happening on the inside" by reprogramming your body to manufacture muscle, says Connelly. He emphasizes "nutrient partitioning," the principle that "a metabolic traffic cop" directs nutrients into fat-burning muscles or parks them as stored fat. Ingredients and additives in the foods we eat cause nutrients to move into the fat-storage parking lot instead of the fat-burning expressway. He recommends eating plenty of high-fiber complex carbohydrates and low-fat protein, and eliminating processed foods containing fructose ("the Stealth bomber of sweeteners"). Although Connelly designed a line of supplements marketed by Met-Rx, he restricts his supplementation recommendations to one short chapter and does not push his own line. Connelly's exercise program focuses on weight training, with 20 exercises divided into four different weekly workout sessions. Illustrations of the exercises, which work all the major muscle groups, include both machine and free-weight options. Charts--both filled in with his prescription and blank for you to log your actual program--are provided for meal planning and exercise. --Joan Price

                        Book Description

The fitness and fat-loss program that keeps star athletes like Jason Sehorn and Troy Aikman in peak condition also has the power to enable a sedentary housewife to lose one hundred pounds, while providing everyone in between with the tools needed to exceed their physical goals. Body Rx is that program. It has changed the lives of thousands. And it can change yours. The genius behind Body Rx is Dr. A. Scott Connelly, the founder of the sports nutrition movement, and the inventor of MET-Rx, the world's bestselling sports supplement. For years, the five million regular MET-Rx users have been clamoring for Dr. Connelly to put his legendary program into book form. The time has finally come.

In Body Rx, Dr. Connelly reveals his 6-Pack Prescription for a great body. Cutting-edge metabolism research teaches us that the only way to get a better body is to make muscle and burn fat. Calorie counting, endless aerobics, and food deprivation will only rob you of muscle and make you fatter. Through four six-week cycles dedicated to getting stronger, getting sculpted, burning fat, and maintenance, Body Rx is an easy-to-follow exercise and diet plan designed for results.

Dr. Scott Connelly follows his own advice, and it shows. At fifty, he is six feet five and a lean 220 pounds of solid muscle. Dr. Connelly is the ideal combination of a trusted physician and hard-charging personal trainer. His passion for building healthier, better bodies will take Body Rx to the front ranks as one of the most effective, original, and popular books in the field.

                        5 out of 5 stars Great Program.......2005-11-23

I visited my cousin last summer who now looks like he should be on the cover of Men's Health. I asked him what he had done to transform his body and he recommended this book.

I have been on this program for 12 weeks now. I have always worked out by running and lifting weights and was in fairly good shape but wanted to lose a few stubborn pounds I couldn't get rid of. All the other diets I tried emphasized cutting calories. I would stay on them for a couple weeks and lose some pounds but was always hungry and new that as soon as I started eating again the weight would come back.

Since I have been on this program I have never been hungry and have developed a lifelong eating plan. My waist has shrunk 2 inches, I have dropped 25 pounds and my cholesterol has dropped from 235 to 177 with my good cholesterol increasing and bad cholesterol decreasing. If you purchase the book and follow the program you will see results.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible results, if you have faith to see it through.......2004-07-28

Dr. Scott's program is not for the faint of heart. The program leans towards the bodybuilder's approach, in that it uses cycling of different phases (bulking/cutting/maintenance), so for the first 2 cycles you are mostly building strength and muscle rather than shedding fat. You are expected to eat far more food than you would on a normal diet, and most people actually feel a little "thicker" during C1 and only start seeing real results between the end of Cycle 2 and the middle of C3. Since many dieters are too short-sighted to see the long-term benefit in this, it may scare some people away. It requires a great deal of faith and forsight to believe that all this food consumption will result in fat loss, but believe it or not, it works like a charm! About 3/4 of the way into the program, the results start to show drastically (I guess that's why the author is a renound metabolic expert).

Since most diet books cator to the shortsighted "weekend dieters", this one is a rare find in that it really takes the time to do things right, by building you up first and setting the foundation for long-term results. For those few who are realistic enough to understand that no fitness model became that way in a weekend (or even 3 months for that matter), but are willing to work hard for 5 or 6 months for extreme results, this program is for you. (BTW, the latter phrase describes *the* one and only secret formula of the fitness cover-models that the suppliment companies don't want you to know about )

I really didn't expect to have any visible results during C1, mostly because I participated in a Body RX chat forum and knew what to expect. I'm now half-way through C2, and for the first time I'm really starting to see results. Today after my workout I happened to catch a glimse of myself in the locker room mirror, and had to do a double-take.

Cycle 3 is where the real fat-loss occurs, and I've heard so many positive accounts of people's C3 experiences, I'm really looking forward to that cycle.

Some people compare this program with Body For Life. To be honest, I've tried BFL and it actually took me longer to get results. BFL falls short by trying to convince you that you can gain muscle and lose fat all at the same time (which may work if you are new to strength training, but won't last long). Also, BFL doesn't fully explain your macronutrient requirements, but instead uses a more arbitrary "palm/fist" method which may lead to macronutrient deficiencies that can ultimately shortcircuit your success. While BFL may be a good place to start (actually, an even better place to start is Tom Venuto's "Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle" online book at burnthefat.com), Body RX is almost like the next level.

Note that the 5 star rating is for the program, not so much for the book itself -- there are some misprints, and there are also some aspects of the program which are not well explained and can be interpreted in a multiple ways. Just to warn you ahead of time, the insane "yellow carb requirements" are actually only *upper limits*, so you are not required to eat all those carbs (can you imagine?). However for best results, the author recommends eating more yellow carbs during C1, fewer during C2, and still fewer during C3.

5 out of 5 stars This book rocks!!!!.......2004-05-19

I started at over 100 pounds overweight in March 2004, and I am now almost 40 pounds lighter in May, roughly almost 2 months time, with two weeks off due to unforseen circumstances. Not only am I lighter, but I have gained a good amount of muscle and feel much stronger. I am done with Cycle one of the book, and I'm starting cycle two now. This book is wonderful as it teaches you how to eat, rather than give you a diet that is really hard to stick on. When I started the weight training part of the book, I was fat, weak, and moving a limb would knock me out of breath. Now I have alot more stamina, strength, and ability. If you do this book, You can do it without supplements, unlike Bodyforlife, but I suggest looking into what the book suggests as options, plus with an added supplement of CLA IMHO. Losing 40 pounds in two months with added muscle tone is great, and I'm looking forward to the end of cycle two, cycle three, and finishing the entire program after cycle four.
