Book Description
Its cool gulf breezes lured him from a life of danger. Its dark undercurrents threatened to destroy him. After ten years of living life on the edge, it was hard for Doc Ford to get that addiction to danger out of his system. But spending each day watching the sun melt into Dinkins Bay and the moon rise over the mangrove trees, cooking dinner for his beautiful neighbor, and dispensing advice to the locals over a cold beer lulled him into letting his guard down. Then Rafe Hollins appeared. How could he refuse his old friend's request-even if it would put him back on the firing line? Even if it would change forever the life he'd built here on Sanibel Island?

The Sanibel Experience.......2007-08-09
As a lover of Sanibel Island, the author's portrayal of Sanibel whisks me back to paradise. As I read, I begin to experience the aroma of the salty sea air, the gentle lapping of the waves in the distance and the Sanibel breeze flowing through my hair. Randy Wayne White blends mystery, adventure, and espionage all set in the the beauty of Southwest Florida. Brilliantly written as well as a very entertaining mystery.
The "James Bond" of SW Florida.......2007-03-29
Having heard this character mentioned in a song by Troprocker Jim Morris I just had to check out these books. I started with this one, the first, as I felt I may want to read the series. I am not disappointed. Mr White's development of Doc Ford is full, and his narrative of southwest Florida sublime. I could feel the sun and gulf breezes and taste the slat air.
I felt like I was reading of a "larger-than-life" character reminiscent of Ian Fleming's daring and dashing spy, only in SW Florida.
I intend to continue with the series, and hope to enjoy my way though all.
I threw it into the garbage.......2006-09-02
read it up to page 294 (out of 307) then threw it in the garbage.
too many faults for me to list, and that would spoil the ending. I will just say that not one of the excessive number of sub-plots is resolved satisfactorily. most are a dead-end insult to the reader. many characters, central to the so-called plot, do not get even one line of dialogue. the author tries way too hard to be clever in his plot twists.
Sanibel Flats.......2005-09-07
A really solid beginning for White's Doc Ford series.
White is an excellent story teller with detailed background for the Florida West Coast and for Ford's marine biology. Toss in knowledge of Central America and you get a great story with a wealth of information.
The birth of a laidback action hero.......2005-06-13
This was not my first Doc Ford novel; in fact my first and only other Randy Wayne White book, was his latest, Dead of Night. I thought Dead of Night was very good, but Sanibel Flats-the first book in the Doc Ford series-was much better. If you are reading this review then perhaps you have never read anything else by White, and if so, then I would recommend you start at the beginning. Doc Ford and some of the characters that are central to the series are introduced and explained in this book. It just makes for better understanding of everything that takes place in the previous novels if you read at least this one first. I don't know if the rest of the books need to be read in order, but I plan to read them that way, so if you are interested in my impression of the others, as I read them, then just check back every so often by clicking on the "see all my reviews" link.
Having said all that, I have nothing but the highest praise for Sanibel Flats. The plotting and pace were in my opinion perfect. A page-turner for sure. There was good character development even though some if the characters were a bit too over-the-top to be believable. But isn't that why you read books like this? I mean, it's fiction after all and the point of the story is to entertain! Some of the book was predictable, but the conclusion certainly was not. Overall story-telling was superb and the dialogue is about as good as it gets, so too was the apparent research behind the facts in the book. You get the impression that White is at the very least an ichthyologist who also happens be a great story teller!
There are a few (very few) mature sequences in this book, so be advised. This book is a great read and in fact memorable. There are unique aspects of White's writing and the manner in which Doc Ford is portrayed, that will appeal, equally well, to both men and women. I am highly recommending it, and it has my highest, five star rating.

Book Description
When Henry Forrester is shot down during a bombing run over France, the World War II pilot finds himself trapped behind enemy lines. In constant danger of discovery by German soldiers, Henry begins a remarkable journey to freedom. Relying on the kindness of strangers, Henry moves from town to town-traveling by moonlight, never asking questions, or even the names of the people who help him along the way. Throughout his journey, Henry gains an understanding of the French and their struggle; and of his own place in a war that will change the face of Europe forever.

A great book.......2007-07-14
I had to read this book for a class. I love this book and if I teach a upper elementary classroom I would probably read this to them. I thought the first two chapters were slow, after that the descriptions were awesome and I couldn't put it down.
Courage of Resistance Fighters.......2007-07-02
Henry loves to fly. Even as a child living on a Virginia farm with his mother and his angry father, he dreamed about flying. Now he is nineteen years old and finally getting to fly, although it is not nearly as soothing as he had imagined. The problem is that Henry is flying missions out of England in World War II. He is the youngest guy in his company and is terrified every time he flies a mission over Germany.
It is one of the longest missions Henry has ever been on, and his plane is taking heavy fire from German planes. He and the men in his plane have to bail out. They parachute to the ground, perhaps miles apart from each other, and Henry is alone in a foreign country.
The first problem Henry faces is in finding out where he is. When he discovers he is in a French province controlled by the Nazis, he realizes he is in serious danger. Luckily the first man he meets is a sympathetic former schoolteacher who agrees to smuggle him into a safe place until he can recover from the injuries he received when he parachuted to the ground.
What follows is Henry's long journey to try to get home. He meets up with members of the French resistance movement, who are able to help him stay alive and move toward his eventual freedom. But he is constantly in jeopardy and falls into the hands of the Nazis more than once. During his travels, Henry comes to realize what he is capable of and he also becomes aware of the ways normal people showed extraordinary courage in helping American and British soldiers during the war.
I liked reading about what everyday citizens were able to do to help the war effort. The members of the resistance were incredibly courageous to help others without thought of their own safety.
However, there were so many times Henry was in imminent danger but then something amazing happened to save him. I understand wanting to show all of the different ways soldiers escaped to freedom, but having them all happen to the same character was a little much.
This is a Great Book.......2007-05-30
Henry Forrester, 19, is in the U.S. Air Force when he is shot down over the Nazi controlled area of East France. Henry has to escape the terrors of the Nazis.
At first, Henry meets a French school teacher tthat aides him through a part of his trek. he teacher puts a splint on Henry's broken leg, and tells him of barges that go to Neutral Switzerland. Henry hops on one of the barges but encounters a close call when he is almost discovered by a Nazi soldier.
Next, Henry meets a group of French resistance forces that help him along even more. The soldiers take him to a small family living on a farm.
Henry now has befriended a small boy that lives on a farm ownen by a family that helps downed pilots. Henry decides to barter with the boy, the boy teaches him French, and in exchange Henry teaches him English.
a group of Nazi patrollers nearly discover a sub machine gun that the family owns. Henry now has no choice but to run away from the family that he has learned to love...
Will Henry make it back to England, or will he become a P.O.W. Read this stunning thriller to find out.
I think that this is a great book, a must buy
Great book!.......2007-03-01
Do you need a book report book? This book is the perfect war story for you! This book is about a boy named Henry who gets shot down and lands in France. It's a story how he goes through the underground trying to get back home. I recommend this book to anyone who needs a book report book.
Good Book.......2007-02-15
Henry forester is the main character and/or protagonist of "Under A war-Torn Sky." Henry is trying to navigate his way through enemy occupied France to get back to allied occupied soil. This book is told in 3rd person.
Along the way he meets many giving people. One of these people is Madame, a wealthy French woman who is helping the French resistance escort allied pilots home. The Authors tone in Under a War-Torn sky" was very serious and down to earth.
I don't think the story really had a theme, except to entertain. Over all "Under A War-Torn Sky" was an exciting book. It also always has you on the edge of your seat with it's great elaboration strategies.

Michael Cross found the courage to venture outside and discovered that the formidable warning and the ungodly terror had just been the beginning. A newfound horror grasped an upside down world in its struggle against incredible and dark forces hell-bent to crown William Mann, the World Teacher, as King of the World.
Cities and even some countries had been annihilated along with countless people. More would be lost unless Michael Cross could somehow find a way to slow the pernicious enemy. Poised on a crumbling precipice, the world's population deteriorates into abject fear, desperate for someone to deliver them not only from themselves, but also from the encroaching darkness.
With the pope and his son missing, Michael Cross has few choices left. He must find them quickly before Mann's pope assumes the Chair of St. Peter and turns the world over to its supposed savior. A predicted miracle is scheduled to occur, but will it be in time to change the hearts of people?
In a never-ending and an always changing race, the war between Mann's people and the rest of the world will leave you breathless and determined to uncover the true nature of Project Jerusalem and the consequences for the world. The human race, in spite of its enlightenment and sophistication, is left mired in confusion as the countdown to insanity begins.

Novel that Reads as Screenplay for Current Events!!!!.......2006-10-07
First, for those who love good writing, this is an exceptionally well written novel. Apart from its relationship to current events or 'end times' this new novel from Kathleen Keating shows her to be a truly great novelist. With religious content, the book is easily compared to the fiction of the late Malachi Martin, but Ms. Keating is a much better writer than even the very talented Fr. Martin.
Second, I would recommend this book for those who would like to understand better just what in the world is going on right now in our chaotic world. Since this novel has been released, some real events have eerily mirrored exactly what Ms. Keating has written. She provides the most cogent framework for making sense out of the utter nonsense that pours out of Washington, D.C., the U.N., and other entitites that are now sorry sources of disinformation.
The third point I'd like to make is that a person of faith will find this a challenging and confirming read. A Catholic Christian especially will be moved by the plight of the Pope in this novel. Truly a remarkable thing that Ms. Keating can tell a story that brings one to great sorrow but also confirms one's need of God in a positive way.
Great Read!.......2006-06-22
Whether you agree or disagree with Keating's "end times" view, this is quite the read. The storyline isn't predictable, keeps you reading until the last sentence, and wanting more. If you want a book that keeps you wide awake, makes you think, & probably has some very legitimate relevance in today's world, buy this book.
Riveting.......2006-05-30
Once again Ms. Keating keeps us on the edge of our seats as we view a changed world through the eyes of her main character, Michael Cross. This skilled Author makes us feel like we know all the characters in her book and we're right beside them as they unravel the mystery that could save us from not only losing our lives, but also our souls. I couldn't up it down.
If the End Times is a facinating subject for you, you're going to love this book. I did.
Not Since Fr. Malachi Martin's Novels..........2006-05-11
Has any author of the brilliant scholarship, unimaginable courage and frankly - genius - of Ms. Kathleen Keating grabbed the torch that has been passed on to her...in the writing of this blockbuster Classic & Masterpiece. It is a work of Art along with the page-turning read of your life. It matters not whether you agree or disagree with the author's position stated on multi-media venues everywhere. The point is that she has the guts to put it on the page. Our Lord said - "I am the way, the truth, and the life...." Ms. Keating will not compromise, dissemble, or play politics. Her work will stand - as great Catholic/Christian Literature as long as books are still printed. And we all pray that continues by the Grace of The Living God. You will never, ever, regret purchasing this book - and I doubt anyone could part with it. It's a keeper and a collectible already.

Book Description
"Nystrom's gift as a poet is that she doesn't stop looking, and her poems make sure it is all still there for us to see."-Eamon Grennan
The landscape of Torn Sky is South Dakota, a place of extremes, where parched land meets frigid air and exiled Native Americans still struggle to live in peace alongside ranchers. Nystrom's poems weave together the voices of her childhood with ghosts of the last two tumultuous centuries and articulate with such subtle and unsentimental grace that each side is understood.
Debra Nystrom was born in Pierre, South Dakota. She is the author of one previous book, A Quarter Turn. She lives in Charlottesville, Virginia, and teaches at the University of Virginia.
Customer Reviews:
A stunning collection of poems.......2003-12-01
The voice of TORN SKY embodies endurance, quiet strength and the acceptance of yearning as a fact of being human. One feels in the book a sense of inevitable, impersonal change that, like the prairie weather, renders us powerless; yet that inevitability, and our very powerlessness in the face of it, become together something that shimmers with possibility, like the potency of a lightning storm on the horizon, or the rainfall whose perverse absence becomes a presence in the house we keep returning to, and in the father's dreams that possess that house. These poems offer impressionistic glimpses, gestures, colors, and bits of speech that bring the book's characters to life in stunning, specific details of living and changing and dying. I closed the book feeling cleansed and uplifted, both by the pure pleasure of reading such beautifully crafted and polished poems, and by the steady wisdom and unsentimental wit, like that of a Buddhist sage, suggesting that change is necessary, that the measure of the soul's journey has to do with understanding, letting go, accepting, and surviving, even as one must keenly experience all the longing, sadness, loneliness and fear attendant upon achieving such awareness. The reader feels this attitude in the way TORN SKY'S poems inhabit real characters in the midst of particular, often quiet moments of crisis, entering, for instance, the perspective of the declining father trying to deal with the tree fallen from the neighbors' yard, or feeling the leukemia victim's "mittened hand" as she grips the leash of the dog she walks across packed snow, or hearing a mother's silent premonitions of letting go of her daughter, as she must. There is a consciousness behind the poems that is always aware and watching, even as the "now" of human experience recedes into what we call "history", and time erodes the present moment of our loves, our children, even our memories. These poems take my breath away.

High Hallack novel of Witch World.......2004-01-10
"Zarsthor's Bane" (Witch World #8) is set in the Dales and the Waste beyond the Dales. The time frame is roughly the same as "The Crystal Gryphon," but I'd rate this book a bit below "The Crystal Gryphon" if only because the hero and heroine are not as likeable.
Brixia, who was once the lady of a Hall in High Hallack now hunts and scavenges the deserted, post-invasion farmland of the Dales. Her only companion is the cat Uta.
Brixia and Uta are drawn into the Waste where Light and Dark Magic still exist, on a search for Zarsthor's Bane. Brixia discovers a place of Green Magic while under attack by one of the many loathsome packs of creatures that inhabit the Waste. Ultimately, she rescues two men (a wounded lord and his squire), but not before Brixia survives a vintage Norton combat between the forces of Light and Dark.
The banquet scene where Zarsthor confronts his Bane is especially eery, and tingling with Norton's special brand of magical description.
Well worth reading; in fact, a 'must' for Witch World fans.

It Can Change Your Life.......2005-03-08
If you're looking for an authoritative review of weight loss surgery, including how it could actually save your life, this is the book for you.
Morbid obesity is usually diagnosed when someone is 100 pounds overweight or 150% of one's ideal body weight. Dr. Flancbaum refers to this condition throughout the book as a chronic disease and offers a range of surgical solutions, along with the risks and possible complications. For anyone contemplating this route to losing weight, realize that the book leans toward the more invasive Roux-en-y (RNY) gastric bypass surgery. In my opinion, it reflects the 2003 copyright date as well as the experience base of most surgeons, who tend to favor what they know best.
However, RNY surgery is documented as more effective, usually resulting in more weight loss than the less invasive gastric banding (GB) surgery. This is due primarily to the dumping syndrome that causes patients to vomit high fat or sugary foods and the malabsorptive nature of the RNY procedure, which reroutes the small intestine to the new stomach pouch and prevents the normal absorption of nutrients. The book terms this surgery as "more radical," since it involves opening the body cavity and re-plumbing the patient's innards.
Compare this to GB surgery, which is generally performed laproscopically with thin instruments and a tiny tv camera to guide the surgeon through four or five small incisions in the abdomen. The plastic band is inserted around the upper part of the stomach, forming a small pouch that helps the patient feel full on much less food. The band permits a trickle of food through the small opening, which is adjustable to expand or contract for more or less food to pass through according to the patient's weight-loss progress. The book cites some negative issues that occurred early on with this procedure, and tends to write it off. But since the book's publication, GB surgery is gaining popularity primarily because it is adjustable, is reversible (rarely done), is far less invasive, does not cause the dumping syndrome, does not affect the absorption of nutrients and has many other advantages.
Regarding food choices and diet recommendations -- Dr. A. Hawasli, one of the most experienced laproscopic GB surgeons in the U.S. -- makes one diet book a mandatory requirement for his patients. Written by registered dietitian Theresa Malysz, The Duct Tape Diet includes a comprehensive listing of 6200 foods from the USDA database of branded items along with their content of saturated fat, protein, carbohydrates and calories. The book also contains a simple, easy to understand regimen for GB patients to follow so their food selections don't interfere with the intent of the surgery. The title originates from her husband's use of duct tape to wrap up those "diet villains" that often cause people to fall off the wagon -- an amusing technique from a book that employs humor to help those afflicted with curse of dangerous excess weight.
Current estimates of 10 million morbidly obese adults in the U.S. (BMI of 40 or more) constitute about 5% of the population and could reach as high as 23 million if the BMI range extends to 35 or more. Although other books on the subject reflect a lower estimate, the problem is all too common for any western society. The Doctor's Guide to Weight Loss Surgery is one of the best guides to help you make this decision, which is not a magic solution to the problem, but is effective for anyone who can't do it any other way.
Very understandable, comprehensive, yet succinct.......2005-01-07
I am the father of a highly overweight adolescent girl, whose furure may include weight loss surgery (WLS). This book explained the many issues involved not only about the surgery itself, but, importantly, about many basic concepts about obesity (including very useful definitions and formulas about what constitutes obesity). The book also clearly discussed the critically important subject of the co-morbid conditions (diabetes II, high blood pressure, e.g.)that can be caused by obesity. The danger of obesity, as mainifested by the presence of these co-morbid conditions, was dramatically described. These issues, as well as the more technical description of the various types of WLS surgeries, was set forth in a manner that was easily understood by this lay person. I felt as if I was involved with a personal consultation with the physician/author, where the surgery was described, and the potential risks and side effects, and benefits, were being explained to me in a very understandable way. The book also contains an ending chapter of Frequently Asked Questions which provided an excellent review of the entire book's contents, and could serve as a condensed version of the book should a reader just wish to address a certain issue, and have the answers presented quickly and directly. The book greatly advanced my understanding of the meaning and problems of obesity, and placed me (and ultimately my daughter)in a substantially more enlightened and informed position to make a potential decision about whether or not my daughter should undergo this surgery.
The BEST WLS Book!!.......2003-07-23
I have read this book several times and it is the only book on this subject that you will need. I have read the others but this book has EVERYTHING you will need to know INCLUDING how to select a surgeon, and even how to get approval for your surgery. A MUST HAVE ITEM IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING WLS.
The Dr. Spock of Weight Loss Surgery.......2003-05-15
I depended on Dr. Flancbaum before and after my weight loss surgery in the same way that I depended upon Dr. Spock when my children were small. His book became a dog earred companion on my nightstand--well read and well loved. I would recommend it to anyone considering this surgery!
Comprehensive guide that covers a lot of ground.......2002-09-21
If you are considering WLS and need to compare operations and get a basic overview, then this is the book for you. It covers pre-surgery questions as well as post-op concerns. I would recommend giving this book to your surgeon or primary care physician to inform them of the surgery. I work as a library assistant and recommend this book to my patrons. It has been the only book I have found that gives good basic coverage of the subject.
